Is It Impossible To Lease A Dedicated Server Anymore

Apr 21, 2009

Last week I was traveling, and we had problems with one of our fairly critical mail servers, problems I really did not want to try to resolve from airport or hotel Internet in South America. So I decide to just lease a clean dedicated server, and setup mail there, and bump over the DNS. Easy, right?

So I pick a hosting company, one that advertises 1 Hour Setups, for obvious reasons, we are losing mail.

I sign up for a $69.99 Linux Dedicated Server, and pay a $50 setup fee, they charge my credit card. Then at the end of the process, I am greeted with a demand to fill out and fax this Service Order, with my CC info on it. Needless to say, I didn’t have access to a fax machine, or scanner.

So I blow another $35.00 on eFax and fill the damn form out in Photoshop, a complete pain in the ass to buy a cheap server. I fax it to the hosting company, and don’t hear from them again. I contact their Live chat support, and they tell me it takes 24 to 48 hours for the account verification process by the sales department, before my 1-hour setup starts.

And then 24 hours later, I get an email from the hosting company, requesting a copy of my credit card, photo ID, and a utility bill for my home address. Impossible for me at the time, so I cancel the order.

And then…yes, it gets better, they tell me they can’t refund my credit card for 3 to 5 days, with some nonsense about their company policy.

This would have been a colossal pain in the ass if I had been sitting at my office, with my full staff at my disposal, but while traveling it was simply impossible. I understand fraud prevention, and charge backs, my company takes credit cards as well…but we do not make it so hard on our customers to spend money with us that they simply take their business elsewhere, just to prevent a possible chargeback.

Ironically enough, I am probably going to have to call my bank today and file a chargeback, as I have not seen my refund from this horrible excuse for a hosting company.

Are there any companies out there that have a clean and easy setup process that do not require a stack of paperwork and the need of a fax machine and scanner to rent a server?

Byethost Review - Server Lease And Management Services

Apr 8, 2009

Just a quick little review here:

Wanted to let you all know that I am very pleased with service I am receiving from Byethost! Many people think of Byet as just a free hosting and paid shared hosting company, but for awhile now I've been leasing a server and management service from them for io3.us and io4.us. I must say I have been very impressed!

I've received lots of personal attention and consulting to help me determine my needs, and also to make sure I end up with the best solution. Byethost has been very flexible in their solutions for me, and I have really appreciated all they've done!

I recently had to upgrade from a VPS to a full dedicated server, and once again Byethost was there to help every step of the way. The upgrade was literally totally seamless.

They ordered the server, configured it, moved everything over, verified everything with me. Nothing was down, not even for a few seconds. Byethost handled it all, and I didn't have to do a thing! That's what I call service. (Plus, from the time I ordered until the time everything was moved from the VPS to the dedicated server and running fine was less than 2 days!)

Previously, I've said HostGator was my number 1 pick for dedicated servers, but I have to change that now. If you're looking for a dedicated server (with or without management servers), I strongly recommend Byethost.com. You will be doing yourself a huge favor, saving a tremendous amount of hassle by choosing Byethost.

I now have a dedicated server and 10 Mbps dedicated line from them, and I couldn't be happier!

Purchasing Off Lease Equipment

Oct 23, 2009

I've been searching Google for a few days in hopes of finding companies that take off lease server equipment (sometimes almost brand new) and auctioning it off to people.

I've been buying alot of equipment through resellers of these places but I would like to cut out the middle man expense and bid for myself.

For example. This week I purchased ten Dell PowerEdge R200's with X3220 Xeon CPU's in them. These are fairly new. I don't want to buy first generation single-core xeon servers.

Look forward to finding out who is supplying these people.

New Netherlands Dedicated Hosting Provider

May 14, 2009

We've been reading this site for awhile a colleague, who is a member, suggested we post a request here. We are looking for a NETHERLANDS-based dedicated server hosting company (which, obviously means a Netherlands datacenter) for our single dedicated server. We're not interested in hosting companies based in other countries but offering NL servers; just those that are NL based.

Our business is perfectly legal (as explained below) and we have neither the time nor inclination to debate the merits of our needs and would appreciate respect for that position (as we have read some of the reactions to such requests by US members for non-US servers and many have been less than respectful).

That said, here are three NL providers we're NOT interested in:

Leaseweb. That is based largely on a recent post in which they indicated they shut down servers with little notice if they get even one, even unsubstantiated, complaint about a TOS violation but also because we've read nightmare stories about how they treat small businesses and individual customers. Apparently, they've become too big for small accounts and our business server is as mission-critical to us as their big business clients. We need a provider that respects small business.

Server Boost. We have a VPS with them (we won't say under which domain name or IP address) but are still trying to work out the kinks in that rather new relationship so won't use them for our dedi at this time. That VPS will be the slave to our dedi.

i3D.net. They are our current dedi provider with whom we have a Rackserver but it isn't working out for a variety of reasons, the most important being we have no remote access control panel or power management. Right now, we are required to pay for OS reinstalls and just about anything else we need that's not a simple reboot. We don't necessarily believe they are a bad provider and don't want to malign them but our experience with them makes us disinclined to upgrade to a Dell server (and we are "anti-Dell" because of our personal experiences with Dell, anyway). We don't believe most customers feel this way about since their offerings are certainly suitable for most needs.

Therefore, we're looking for different alternatives from Leaseweb, i3D and Server Boost that are reputable, provide high-quality servers and solid, English-speaking, tech support at a reasonable monthly price. (We liked, for example, what OVH was offering but their NL site is in Dutch, only, and we don't want a UK server.)

What we now have:

* Intel Quadcore 2.4 Ghz CPU
* 2 GB DDR2 RAM
* 500 GB HDD (non-RAID)
* max 1000 mbit connection
* 2000 GB traffic
* 10+ IP addresses
* Full root access
* SSH access
* Netherlands company/NL datacenter
* Unmanaged
* No hosting control panel
* Upgradeable RAM, B/W, IP addresses, etc.
* Full hardware SLA

What we MUST have:

* Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4+ Ghz CPU
* 4 GB DDR2 RAM (upgradeable to 8 GB, if nec.)
* 160+ GB HDD (RAID isn't necessary if single HD)
* max 1000 mbit connection
* 250-500 GB traffic p/m
* 15 IP addresses
* Full root/ SSH access
* IMPERATIVE: Remote access control panel with power control and ability to complete repair and maintenance tasks and OS reinstalls remotely WITHOUT having to contact Tech Support or pay for such services**
* Netherlands company/NL datacenter ONLY
* CentOS 5.3 x86_64 Linux (minimal) installed
* Full virtualization capability
* Unmanaged
* NO hosting control panel
* Upgradeable RAM, B/W, IP addresses, etc. as well as to a newer/larger dedi in first 30-days of contract without paying setup fees
* Full hardware SLA
* Responsive, English-speaking tech support, preferably 24/7** by email or phone and response within several hours
* TOS/Privacy Policies/Legal Policies available in English without the "Dutch only" terms valid caveat
* Server/order details available in English
* Fully itemized invoices available upon request
* Server provisioned and ready-to-use within 24-48 hours after payment clears (must be guaranteed in writing)
* MONTHLY contract (with NO 30-day advanced notice cancellation clause**) and PayPal as payment option

(**Lack of these important features is why we're switching providers.)

Prospective providers should be clear that this server is for our completely legal, US-based businesses that represent high-profile individuals engaged in legal business activities themselves. We will host several websites and blogs that are business-oriented and targeted to them, C-suite decision-makers who contract for our services and their audiences.

Our sites will contain NO adult content (legal or otherwise, whether it's called porn, erotica, or whatever), warez, torrents, copyrighted material for which we don't have permission to post/use, or overtly controversial materials like anti-government, hate speech, etc. We won't be spamming, phishing or doing IRC. We will not market to or represent clients who engage in such activities, even if legal in their jurisdiction.

We are not going to be hosting others' websites and our sites/blogs aren't expected to generate excessively high traffic. We use IP addresses for NS purposes and other purposes for which separate IP addresses are needed. So, we won't need DDoS or similar protection.

Our budget is €125.

Please give us your hosting-provider (only) suggestions. We'd prefer only recommendations of NL-based providers you've used. SERIOUS responses only; due to time constraints, we're forced to ignore any responses that don't adhere to our request for provider recommendations or attempt to debate the merits or our needs.

VPS In The Netherlands (perferrably We-dare Bandwidth)

Apr 21, 2008

One of my clients is currently experiencing trouble with their current host and are searching for a new VPS host.

5 Things to know.

Budget: $60 USD per month
Network: We-Dare (no leaseweb or ecatel)
Transfer: 200GB+
Memory: 512MB+
Control Panel: DirectAdmin

The host they are currently with is InfiniteTech, if they don't work out their differences I will post the whole story but for now will give InfiniteTech the benefit of the doubt.

On the contrary, if somebody is offering a Dedicated (low-end [celeron, 1gb ram]) for $80/m or under we will gladly listen too.

Improve Performance- Web Server, SSH Server, And Mail Server

May 8, 2007

I've got a VPS which is serving as the main server for a number of sites. Web Server, SSH Server, and Mail Server.

What I've got running:

Apache2, PHP5, MySQL5, Dovecot, Postfix

One of the sites is a growing forum with a MASSIVE photo album. This is the site where I notice the most slowness.

Changing the server software is not an option - Only optimization.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Don't Have Root Access To Server As It Is A Webfusion Dedicated Server

Oct 16, 2013

I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -

1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription
2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents
3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL

FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??

URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??

Urchin 5 / Google A . Transfering From Server To Server (Serial Already Activated)

Nov 21, 2006

I am currently running Google Analytics/Urchin 5 (v5.7.02), on a server, the server has started to act up, (on its last legs etc) and now I am trying to transfer the Urchin Software to a new server, where it would work effectively.

However upon installing the urchin software on the new server and running it (localhost:9999), I am presented with An Action Items Page, and these following choices

Obtain Demo License
Buy License
Activate Pre-Purchased License

I choose ‘Activate Pre-Purchased License’ pop in the Serial number and complete the registration then…

---------------------------------------------------------
Urchin Licensing Center -- Error!

An error has occured during your transaction, please use the back button and correct the problem. The specific error message is:

• Unable to generate a license. Some possible reasons:

Your serial code is currently active <<< How do I disable it and use it on another server?
---------------------------------------------------------

So all I want to do is deactivate the serial and reactivate it on another server.

Does anyone have experience with this or a similar problem or have a solution to this problem. Any help be most appriciated.

Or even a Contact Number so that i can get some one over the phone!

Cheap European Server For Small Game Server

Aug 31, 2008

I've been developing a small 2D MMORPG lately. I bought a VPS to run the server on a few days ago and sadly it doesn't work so well. Sometimes the loads go pretty high (afaik not caused by me) and MySQL freezes, causing the server to just wait for MySQL to unlock, hanging all the players around on the map. Not a good thing.

Anyway, the game is very small scale, and I'm not planning to have more than maybe 30-50 players online. It does not suck up much CPU, I had ~10 guys online and loads stayed down at 0.00 on the VPS box.

Problem with getting a dedicated is our very low budget. As I'm still underage and living at home hammering my pc and don't have any real incomes, we're talking numbers like $ 30 - $ 50 USD per month - it's really hard to find for that price in Europe.

Requirements:
Monthly payment, $ 30 - $ 50 / month, no setup (or very small setup, like $ 20)
10Mbit/s or faster connection, 100GB traffic should do
500MHz CPU is all cool
512MB or more RAM
5GB diskspace is enough
Has to be in Europe due to ping times (< 100ms)
Linux, Debian 4.0 prefered

If anyone knows where I could get something like this for a low price, $ 30 to $ 50 USD, it'd be great.
