Limit Resources Per User On Windows
I want to limit resources like CPU and RAM maybe as a per user setting on a Windows Server 2003.

I've read about Windows System Resource Manager but from what I see it applies to per-process.

Is there a solution (freeware maybe) for this?

How To Limit Resources ? (cpu, Memory Usage)
How can I limit my dedicated server's resources ? For example, one of reseller provider's limits :

Quote:

Resellers may not use more than 2% CPU daily, 3% memory daily, run more than 10 simultaneous processes per user, allow any process to run for longer than 30 seconds CPU time, run any process that consumes more than 20% of available CPU at any time, or run any process that consumes more than 16 MB of memory. Databases are limited to 16 max user connections with a max query time of 8 seconds. Cron jobs must not execute more than once every 15 minutes and will be niced to 15 or greater.

From where or how can I configure these limits?

Cpanel Users Limit?
I'm in the process of taking a mid range dedicated server with cpanel. I was just wondering what sort of limit cpanel has with the number of users?

For example

10,000 very small websites using sub domains
1000 average sites with top level domains?

Or is cpanel limit not an issue and it's more down to what the server can handle in terms of it's usage?

There have max_connections setting but it limit for all users in all connection to MySQL.

Server Resources Keep Draining
I am running CPanel/WHM as well as the WHMSonic plugin for a Shoutcast service. Now the thing is that my RAM limit is 4GB, but my RAM usage is always at around 3.5GB and above.

I guess it's mainly due to WHMSonic, so is there any way i could lower this RAM as on multiple occasions the server has locked up and shutdown, rebooted or had to be rebooted.

On top of that, the server load is around 10.00 or above.

Is there a resource controlling script which i could install?

High Usage Of Server Resources
a few times, my host contacted me and said that my account is suspended due to high usage of server resources.

I have 3 sites using SMF (a forum script.) I have around 8500 visitors and 3 million page views per month in total.

can this be a reason of high usage?

if it's what's the meaning of terabyte traffic limit ? which you can never use

I asked to my host if they could let me know what's causing high server resources usage. here is the answer:

We do not know which domain or script caused this high usage, it is your responsibility to investigate. I would suggest that you go through your raw access logs to see the most requested pages and then investigate those further. After you find the pages responsible, please optimize them so you are not using so many server resources.

so if a host wants simply to restrict traffic limit, they have a pre-reason under hand.high server usage! yes but how will I know that? how will I trust that it's true?

when I ask why my sites are down, they can easily tell me that it's because of high server usage!

One Server - File - Two Users Editing It, Third Errors Out
There is 1000MBPS network set up between three computers and server.

Server has files which program saves.

Program is being run in three different computers.

Each computer tries to get into same file (eg last bill) that was created before. First computer goes in within seconds. second minutes and third just crashes. No matter which computer runs it first, last one crashes.

So called "server" is running on Windows XP pro since it just needs to keep one program files. However I cant find out whats causing file sharing over network bug that crashes access to same file if connection from many computers.

Users Cannot Connect To Remote MySQL Server
I have a few users that have a hosting account with me and are trying to connect to their own MySQL servers elsewhere. Both said that they are able to connect to the MySQL server with other hosting accounts but not the ones hosted with me. I asked if they had setup permissions to allow remote connections from my server and they confirmed that they did.

What am I missing? Do I need to configure my firewall somehow? I figured the connection is just using port 80 since it's from an PHP script right?

Windows Server 03 2TB HDD Limit
I am sitting here taking a day off from all the craziness in my life (saturday night!) and just catching up on things trying to stay organized and I been searching on google about windows server 2003 and its hard drive limitations.

Let me start by saying I have a colo server hosted somewhere that contains the following hardware:

Dual Opteron 246
2GB RAM
750GB x 5 (approx 3.5TB after OS partion)
3ware 9550SX PCI-X-to-Serial ATA II 9550SX-16ML

Now right now my windows server has a big 2TB partion and its on RAID 0 but I have another 1.5TB unallocated space that I cannot use due to this 2TB limit that seems to be. Now I got this from my host (support) saying that its the limit.

[url] here it exaplins that 2TB its the limit but if its on "GPT" it can have much more storage now I don't know what this means at all I just want some way (or know) what I have to do so I can use all of my space. I honestly do not want to touch Linux for the reason that I am rarely unexperienced by it. I run perfectly on 2TB but I do have extra hard drives that I should be using.

If I had to delete my data I would do so anything to be able to use more space is awesome on windows.

Multiple Domains On A Dedicated Server, Plesk, Users And Apache
In my old server (VPS) I had my dir structure as:

sitea.com was pointing to
/home/me/public_html/sitea

siteb.com was pointing to
/home/me/public_html/siteb

On my new server, I have root permissions and used Plesk to create two domains sitea.com and siteb.com . Now plesk asks for a user to be created for each domain, so created usera and userb for sitea and siteb respectively.

Now as root on my server I created the dir /home/me/ and untarred the whole backup from old server to new server and I have dirs :

/home/me/public_html/sitea and /home/me/public_html/siteb

In apache configuration in file:
httpd.include_sitea under
dir /var/www/vhosts/sitea.com/conf/httpd.include

I changed the document root to /home/me/public_html/sitea

So I thought I am all set. But it does not work. When I try sitea.com in the browser it works but for all subdirs, for eg sitea.com/images it says Access denied.

This is because the dirs I created are owned by root.

So the owner of /home/me/public_html/sitea needs to be usera for this to work ?

Again for siteb to work I need to change the owner of /home/me/public_html/siteb to userb ?

This will be painful ? At least I should be able to change the owner of /home/me/public_html/ to one owner and ensure all sites under that work fine. How do I do that ?

I think the problem is clear by now. Its that I want all my sites to work off from .../public_html/ sub dirs.

Script To Limit File Size On Video Share Server
We have found that we need to limit the amount of cpu uage by users on our video share server. On this server we currently have 20 users on a sharred plan. Thought that the obvious BW usage would be the biggest challenge, as it turns out we havent gone over the 2 TB that we have.

We have come up with an encoding process that uses the 264 codec and gives us excellent results in terms of quality but is very cpu intensive to the point of really slowing down the server when 10 or more users simutaneously are encoding their videos.

Can someone suggest a script that would allows us to limit the file size in terms of MB/GB that each user could upload per month.

So for example a client pays 10.00 per month and we wanted to limit their uploads to a total of 900 MB per month vs the client that is paying 50.00 per month who would have the ability to upload say 8 GB per month.

Cento 5
c-panel
Dual Quad Core 2.0 ghz
6Mb Ram
1TB HDD
2 TB of BW

1- No cPanel needed

2- Unmanaged plan

3- VPS or Dedicated

4- Space needed -- not much . maybe maximum 20 giga

5- Direct links with no software to upload or download all is done through FTP and HTTP browsing

6- Bandwidth / month more than 300 giga and less than 600 giga ( can compromise ) .

7- maximum simultaneous downloads will be 10 - 20 individuals on the same moment

8- Files on server wont exceed 30 mega per file

How much Ram/CPU mainly I may need?

Good Resources For EC2
After speaking to a colleague about some major benefits of EC2 for on-demand hosting I've been very interested in learning more.

I've spent the past 2 evenings trolling through Amazon Doc's and blog posts and have a fair assessment about how things work but I'm at a stopping point.

There doesn't seem to be a dedicated EC2 area here on Sitepoint and the Amazon EC2 forums seem geared more towards 'advanced' users.

Are there any reliable communities that are more for the beginner?

I've got a LAMP webserver Instance running on EC2 but I'm very unclear about how to login and begin adding files and managing the data. I'm sure it's pretty simple but the documentation pretty much loses me when they start discussing Security Groups and public/private keys.

I'm not much of a server admin but have grown pretty comfortable on our FC4 dedicated boxes that we currently host on.

How To Give All Resources To MySQL
I got a dedicated server running, which is administered by DirectAdmin, which I mainly use as a mysql server. Now my question would be, what would I do to give all resources possible to mySQL? I mean I don´t wanna take down directadmin and setup mySQL only, so I want to keep directadmin but give almost all server resources to mySQL?

What I did so far is adjust all tables, do indexes and stuff.

The background is that at certain times I face server loads of 40 caused by many external servers of mine querying the mySQL database on the server I am talking about.

So while the load is mainly below 0.1 it sometimes goes up to 40. So this peak I wanna slow down a little bit by giving all resources to mySQL. To say that beforehand splitting the queries from external servers is not an option - they all need to be done at the same time.

So I would really be interested and thankful in what you would advice to do to optimize the mySQL service?

BTW system is running on debian.

VPS Resources - Normal Or Not
We've just started to use a VPS, and so far no problems I've been looking at the resources and they seem a little high considering it's pretty much out of the box, and I've only setup 4 sites which aren't even public yet. The only thing I've changed is the php.ini to increase the memory limit to 32mb. My main concern is that these sites don't suffer when they go live.

In the Plesk control panel the memory says:
3.8 GB of 3.8 GB used; 47.1 MB available
The 47.1mb is pretty much average, although I've seen it go as low as 115mb.

In Virtuozzo the system usage (resource: capacity) is usually around 60-75%

Both of these seem a little high, but I'm not sure if these readings are for the whole physical server, or just my portion of it.

Also in the (Virtuozzo) QoS alerts I've had quite a few Yellow zone, black zone and one red zone reports, at around 5am - quite possibly the quietest time on a server which isn't hosting any live sites yet. These have both been on the numproc and the privvmpages services (the red zone was one the privvmpages). Is there anything I should be looking at or is this fairly normal operation for a VPS? I have nightly backups scheduled for around 1am. These were originally set for 4am, but reports were showing that they were running out of memory, so I’ve now staggered the times of these to see if that helps. I've haven't changed anything resource-wise other than the php, so I thought it would be good to go from the start, but maybe it needs some fine tuning.

Less Resources And Cheap VPS. Does It Worth For You
I have seen some requests for cheap Virtual Private Servers. By saying "cheap" I mean under $20/month... However the those who posted the requests meant under $10/month...

I don't think that a virtual machine or container would cost $10 or less, but I've seen some providers to offer virtual servers with a very small amount of resources - a couple gigs of space, not to much bandwidth and 64 MB or 128 MB RAM - and to price them around 10 bucks per month.

Although I'd never go this way I'm curious to read what do you thin about such a marketing policy. Do you think that offering a VPS which can not even have a control panel because it doesn't have enough resources is a good practice? (I realize that there are different scenarios and some people probably don't need hosting automation software, but at the same time need a low cost virtual machine...)

Apache Taxing Resources Says Hosting Company
I got this unnerving email from my hosting company today:

"While investigating performance issues on the hardware you're hosted on, we have noticed that your Apache process has been using a large amount of resources / disk i/o. So much in fact that it is affecting other users. This has become a violation of both our Acceptable Usage Agreement, and our Terms of Service. Respond within 24 hours of this notice, agreeing to cooperate with Spry staff in the resolution of this issue. You must modify and/or delete this process to fall within acceptable limits again. You must also take measures to prevent this kind of abuse in the future."

So I called them and the advice I was given was to stop hotlinking and check my stats. Well I did the first but the later revealed no server abuse. Tonight I saw load averages spike and stay about 2-3. The server was going slow. So I disabled Spamd and loads when back to normal.

I'm just wondering if there is anything else I can do. For the issue they talked about is what I want to watch load times?
