I'm setting up a web site for my online music library, doing it the hard way and learning as I go!
What I want to do I keep all the audio files secure so only registered users can get at them, how do I do this? FTP? permissions? Can I pass the user data from the client database somehow or do I have to set it up manually for each client?
I'm using php and mysql and have a table set up with all the file locations in it and that side of things is mostly working well. Once a user gets the URL of the file how do I make sure only that user can download the file?
I've tried searching the web for info but I have the sneaking suspicion I'm not asking the right question.
I am searching for a reliable shared(or any other cheap option) hosting provider to host my mp3 download site. My site is getting 3000 uniques a day and monthly bandwidth usage is around 1000 to 1200 GB.
I'm using oscommerce on a PHP5/Apache 2 installation. I've got several virtualhosts, and I'm using webmin to administrate them. I've just moved to this new server, and now files are being played in browser instead of downloaded....I thought I had changed the mime.types file correctly, but obviously not...
Here is the content of it: Code:

I'm running a remote dl site where user will request a file from various file sharing site like rapidshare and megaupload, and allow it to stream and dl. Few days ago everything was normal, but since yesterday all rar files download have corrupt name and sizes but when trying to extract it seems to be corrupted, zip files are running fine though.
I am having trouble with moving my files to another server.
i have 1 servers, 1 hosting account (no ssh), both are using different control panel and i need to move all of the media files(movies) in the hosintg account to other server since hosting account contract will expire soon.
So, i am thinking of using FTP to transfer multiple files using mget command for FTP. But the thing is i will need to be there any press enter( to accept download) for every single files to be download. Which is very time consuming since i have hundred of files to move.
So my question is: 1/ is there a better way to move files in this situation?
2/ or Is there a shell script that i can use to download all of the file to my server without pressing enter accepting every single file?
I have a problem with users that want to download files that are in a protected folder. They don't get the login popup when the click on a link, if they use a direct url then they get the login but the download doesn't begin.

When you delete a site backup from its "Backup Manager" Panel, it is removed and no longer displayed in the Panel. However, I cannot tell if this action actually does anything with the real site backup files in "/var/lib/psa/dumps". Does this action merely remove it from PSA's database but not touch any actual files? If this is true, then how are site backup files supposed to be managed if this action doesn't actually delete them?
I'm trying to find at least three web hosting companies to choose from to host a Joomla websites on a shared server. Would consider dedicated if the deal was right. I have a friend of mine who wants to create a church website, and is looking for the best deal. I use Netfirms which I have never had an issue with, but I didn't want to be bias, and would like give him other options to choose from.
Is there a good WebHosting Review site, I could check out, or maybe someone could recommend their top three. I reading threw the forums here and I noticed there are not that many complaints with Hostgator. Again, I just want to see if there was anything out there better.
When I use website copy function the website files are copied to another domain but the database remains on old site. I use this function to move the website from devel state to the production state. All sites work fine but when i schedule the backups all databases are saved on old domain. How to move the database on production domain?
As somebody who has bought the 'Build Your Own ASP.NET 2.0 Web Site Using C# & VB' by CRISTIAN DARIE and ZAK RUVALCABA, I wonder what Hosting deals are considered the best and most user friendly (robust and support).
By this I mean, the most competitive for users like me who are just learning the technology and maybe want to set up some basic book examples online using SQL 2005.
i can host my web applications locally and my database connections are still intact but how can i host my web applications designed wit DW on a public server without the database connection being broken?
i have purchased a site and im waiting for godaddy to reply to a push from the seller(the domain) can i upload to a hosting co without owning the domain name? the site is boomlink.info and when its typed into google it goes straight to godaddy . can you see where im coming from?
I have looked far and wide for a hosting company that supports ASP.NET as well has SQL server (and that allows remote connections via MS Enterprise Man). I have used Godaddy for years, but trying to access a SQL or MySQL db for development is complicated and pathetic. I have looked at many new Hosting CO's, including m6,1and1,ixwebhosting,************,hostmonster,bluehost, and others mentioned here; but All I can find is dozens of reviews, mostly bad and very few good, on about ANY company that I google for except the ($20+) monthly ones. I have found a site called reliablesite.net, that interests me. (I am non profit org paying out of my pocket). I have seen good reviews but a couple that are very 'bad' for me, such as no sites hosted on this provider, no phone number or where the company is at. Any insights on the provider. I am needing an ASP.NET / SQL provider (low volume traffic). (I found a reliable ? discountasp.net but there price w/SQL is too high..) , so am looking at reliablesite.net. Just tired of looking at dozens of bad reviews on about any site I google for...
I'm trying to migrate my vps to another server, and basically I need to move the entire public_html directory from first server to the second. As its almost 2.5 gb, downloading and ftping isn't really an option, so I'm thinking i need to tar and then gzip it, and then somehow transfer it diectly.
so my question is what is the proper command to use for tar and gzip in this case? and what method to transfer. should i use wget or is there a better way. Once i have it on my destination server how do i untar it, and what path will it untar to?
I need a hosting with 5-10 GB Hard-drive Space and about 500 GB of bandwidth (maybe a bit less). Without any features (apache, php, etc). I need only Ftp to upload and share video files. But not very expensive, not more than $10-$20.
i am confused which one is better VPS or Dedi ? my budget is very low under $25-20 / Month , I saw some dedi offers for $30/month from prontoserver i think is that Good? or Go with a VPS? i need 60GB and 400GB of bw so what is the best thing?
