Determining Requirements
with a single server running PHP and MySQL.

What sort of hosting requirements do you think I would need for...

A site with a mysql db with 100,000+ records in a single table and executing simple select statements on the table with 100,000+ records at a rate of 50 queries per second? (All other things should be negligible at this scale).

Determining Operating System (Linux)
Without having all of the operating systems at my disposal for testing, I would like to figure out a way to determine the operating system of a remotely accessed Linux machine.

It seems pretty strange though, since cPanel reports both machines I am using as being

CENTOS Enterprise 4.5 i686, yet one's uname -a reports:

Code:
Linux hostsentry.crucialwebhost.com 2.6.9-023stab044.4-enterprise #1 SMP Thu May 24 17:41:23 MSD 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Code:
Linux main.7kb.org 2.6.9-55.0.6.ELsmp #1 SMP Tue Sep 4 21:36:00 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I'm assuming there is a way to determine the OS from this information. Anyone know how?

Determining Process Intense Tasks With Suexec Installed
i got mod suexec / phpsuexec installed on the server recently. if i click on view cpu/memory/mysql usage in WHM i can see this in the first row:

<username><domain>3.170.110.1
Top Process%CPU 145/usr/bin/php
Top Process%CPU 100/usr/bin/php
Top Process%CPU 81.7/usr/bin/php

now this info is pretty useless. ok, php is evidently bursting to pretty damned high cpu levels. BUT, what are the actual FILES causing this load?

Should Location Of Host = Location Of Targeted Visitors?
Just a question about hosting your site in the same country where your main targeted visitors is located. It is my belief that I should host my sites in the same country where I the targeted visitors are. Am I correct in saying this??

So..
US Focus Site should be hosted in the US
Canadian Focus Site should be hosted in Canada
And UK Focus Site would be hosted in the UK??????

Does IP Address Location = Server Location
I have a VPS and when I signed up I was told by the provider that the server was based in a UK datacentre. However, I've just done a search on the IP address for my VPS and it comes up as 'The IP address is assigned to France'.

Does this mean the server's actually located in France?

Co Location.
what does it mean?

right now i am under the impression, i can buy a server from dell or so for say $1200 - $3000, and then pay like 20 - 50 to have them placed at a datacenter with a dedicated internet line and all that?

if that is true, can i take my equipment at home (making sure there the right size box, obviously im guessing , dc's do not take full towers to be placed), and send them out?

I am thinking that this way, I can load linux, or whatever OS on it, install whatever extensions I need, do whatever, and have a dedicated server to my self for less then 50$ /month.

What happens when it fails? do they send it back to you? i would like that, since I can recover my files and stuff.

People dont do this because:
1) parts are not warrantied
2) its too costly and time consuming to load them with control panels and security software/hardware.

Co-Location
I have some idea of what it is, I make contract with a data center and have my server located on their place.

What I need to know about is, how does all of the fees work, and what does some of this stuff means?

- 1u vs. Full rack vs. cabinet vs. tower

- BGP network

- what is Bandwidth billed on port speed or on 95th percentile.

- Tier 1 and Tier 2, and the Level 3 label

- Amp Needed

- Installation (Is this the process of connecting the server with wires and power, or is
this also software installation?)

- What other costs are there?

Thank you anyone who can help. If you have an article with this kind of info, I be happy.
I will try to find this info on my own, but I might not find everything I need to know so I am also asking it from here.

Regards,
Hsb.

How Important Is Location
I live in Turkey. I'm gonna buy a reseller package from Hostgator which is located in Texas. I will mostly make websites in English language for business(affiliate websites) but I decided to make 2 websites in Turkish language for a hobby of mine. Should I buy hosting from a company in Europe or can I still go with Hostgator? I really like Hostgator's package but how much disadvantage would there be in terms of speed? Would people be able to tell by speed whether the server is close or not? Is there a way to test it? All my friends' computers have a speed around 100kb download per second.

IP Resolving To A Different Location
I have a local server named as 'EPBX' which monitors the working of the telephone system and makes their log entries. Recently its HDD partition got crashed due to which it was formatted and had re-installed Windows server 2003 after which I am facing some problems as given below:

- The IP address assigned to this server is 192.168.100.2. I am able to ping the IP but unable to take the console of the software from some other local PC.

- Also when I try to trace the IP using the tracert command first it resolves to the ISP's router and then to the server. But the router is not at all asigned a local IP. I have assigned a global IP to it. (Screen shot of the same has been attached)

- It would be very difficult for me to change the IP address

i.What is the best Os in your opinion, preferably an open source=lower expenses and licensing

ii.What should you look for when looking for a provider e.g power/bandwidth and how would go about doing that? Can these providers give international coverage?

iii. What is your best estimet of cost it would take to build a 3U rack server with firewall..switches the whole lot?

iv.Do you find that your servers are extremely noisy?

v.What is your recommened network topography works best with these servers e.g start, ring, bus etc?

Texas Co-Location
With my New York location settling in, I'm now looking for a new host to Co-Locate with in Texas.

We host game servers, so I'm looking for premium bandwith. We currently host with softlayer, and I couldn't be happier, but we really need to cut the costs of renting hardware.

I know that Texas has numerous options for co-location, but before I search through hundreds of sites, I thought I would ask here first.

I'm trying to build a list of 5-10 hosts so I can send off for quotes.

Anyways, here are the details of what I need, any assistance is always appreciated.

Looking for:

2U (2 x 1U servers)
2-3 Amps Per Server
6mbps

Ideal Price: $150/month - $300/month

I figure this is a safe price range in Texas

Co-Location With LiquidWeb
I have never tried co-location before, I was looking at the 10U co-location with a 10Mbit/s unmetered port [url]

What I wanted to know was if anyone has had experience with LiquidWeb in general and more important with their co-location facilities?

I'm in the U.K. - what couriers do you guys use to ship your server(s), I assume it can be quite costly?

Does anybody have any other recommendations for co-location providers? I'm also looking at co-location in the U.K. but with more expensive bandwidth etc I'm thinking its best off hosting my servers in the USA as I do with most of my dedicated.

Another question - where do you buy your hardware/servers from (looking at places in the UK)?

I'm looking for dedicated servers and found good pricing/service in Chicago but worried about response times for my Cali folks. Also people that manage the servers may be in Cali as well. Will they find it fustrating to remote into these windows servers and manage them or will it be acceptable or should I find something closer to california?

BurstNet Servers Location
I've been with BurstNet now for just 3 days. Had few (long) down times in this short period, but I'll not write a review till a finish 2 - 3 weeks (cos I may look for another DC after 3 weeks if things are still not going very well)

Anyway, I've noticed something strange when I do a lookup for the the IP assinged to me, I found its location is Philippines although their DC is in Scranton. So is it possible that the server is phyisically resides in Pilippines? The other strange thing is that while the IP was unreachable few times, BurstNet engineers insisted that they can ping and remotely login to my server. Although I tried several ISPs to ping but the IP im sure was unreachable. My only explanation to this, is that they were pinging from within their LAN.

Someone mentioned switches, KVM (?), reboot port, network cable... it's all Greek to me.

detailed heads-up so I can purchase everything at once? I was thinking of getting everything at Dell, but recommendations are also welcome.

My present dedicated server setup is as follows:

AMD Opteron 2x2.0Ghz
2GB ECC Memory
250GB Hard Drive
2000GB Bandwidth
5 IP Addresses
WHM 11.1.0 cPanel 11.4.6-R13580
CENTOS Enterprise 4.5 i686 - WHM X v3.1.0

I also welcome your server suggestions.

If this has already been posted elsewhere, I apologize, I couldn't find it.

Co-location Orlando Or Miami
We are a small Dutch company that has a few dedicated servers in the Rotterdam datacenter. At the moment we have a VPS in the US we use as secondary DNS and backup of main site.

Because we actually own quite some servers we were thinking about the posibility to co-locate one of our own servers in the US.

We only use HP Proliant servers with iLO so we could allways manage a server remotely.
What we need is.

1. Datacenter in Orlando or Miami
2. Possibility for "hands on support" like to change a HDD or to upgrade memory (for only 1 server).
3. 1U of space and around 500GB of monthly datatransfer (we currently use only 200GB).
4. Internal cPanel license!
5. A good connection to Europe and preferably alos South America (Aruba, Curacao, Venezuela).

What Is The Real Importance Of Server Location
I am almost ready to choose my host (as reseller) but I would like to know how is possible to determinate the importance of server location ?

In fact am located in Switzerland (middle Europe) and my targeted customer are especially located in my Switzerland, France and Belgium. In Europe is difficult to find nice host reason why I take a look for US hosting. It is a lot important to choose a host near my country ? It is just a story of access time to a website or something else ? Actually I have some website hosted in France and US but I don't see really a big big difference when a site load...It is a story of maybe 1 or 2 seconds more...and sometime the site hosted in France (and so more near to my location) take little more time to load..

Serve Images From A Different Location Based On IP
We have a major chunk of our traffic coming in from Asia and our servers are in the US. The latency is an issue which we have sorted out by ensuring we use Amazon's cloudfront CDN atleast for the static images.

Now while this is working rather well, we are now wanting to experiment and see if we could put up an additional image server in our country to serve IPs from that specific range.

In case the local image server goes down, the amazon cloudfront setup should be used. What are the best options for achieving this with the least amount of latency for the users?

Website Blocked In Single Location
I'm a web developer for an educational institution. We have a site that over 300 students must access each semester. Our site is hosted by a popular shared hosting provider. Our site is accessible to everyone BUT several students living in a particular dorm on our campus. The dorm has a different internet service provider than the rest of the school, so the site IS accessible on the rest of campus.

The dorm ISP insists they have no firewalls blocking any sites including ours. Indeed, the students confirm they have never had a problem accessing any other sites. Our webhost ran some tests and said they do not have a firewall up against the dorm's IP address therefore the problem must be on the dorm's end. Indeed, no one else has problem accessing the site except for these dorm students. Both companies are claiming it must be on the other's end and neither are willing to look into it further.

Some additional tidbits. The site was hosted on a Mac G5 dedicated server in our department in the past and students never complained about access issues. However, that was in our beta phase and less students were accessing the site.

We had one of the students in the building run some ping commands and a tracert. The general ping and tracert commands appeared to indicate the site was working. However, when the student tried various specific ports, the command got stuck on: "connecting to ..." where the dots were our website.

This test seemed to affirm to the server company that the problem was at the ISP level. Again, the ISP insists the problem is not theirs.

My main question is, does anyone know what on earth could be happening and on what end this problem may be on?
