I bought one from ebay but it had a crazy AMP limit and just didn't even pick up the usage from the server.
Virtuozzo VPS System Usage Meter Wrong
Jan 10, 2009I have noticed a weird thing lately with two VPS accounts. Virtuozzo's system usage meter on the Resources page creeps up to 100% over the course of 24 hours or so and stays there, but stays green and I don't get any QoS alerts. The servers both seem to be running fine, and I haven't had any crashes. One VPS is running a few Wordpress blogs.
The other is running some Joomla sites.
Both are running Virtuozzo on CentOS 4.7 i686 with WHM 11.24.2 and cPanel 11.24.4-R32486.
In the past, when the system usage meter in Virtuozzo got anywhere near 100%, it turned yellow or red, I had sites go down, and all kinds of QoS alerts for privmpages were thrown. It turned out back then that I had a bad PHP script eating tons of memory with too many MySQL queries. That doesn't appear to be the case here, since I'm not having any apparent problems with either server. It seems like a "non-problem" but it has me concerned because I'm used to using that system usage meter in Virtuozzo to keep an eye on the health of the VPS..
When I look at memory used in WHM (WHM->Server Status->Server Status) it shows only 31% used, which is what I used to see in Virtuozzo.
When I run free, I get:

Initially, I suspected it was another problem with MySQL, and restarting MySQL does drop the system usage meter down to ~31% in Virtuozzo for a while--without changing the actual memory used on the System Processes page--but the memory usage for MySQL with Virtuozzo pegged is only 6.23% in WHM.
Here's the really weird thing: If I look at Virtuozzo->System Processes it shows only 0.4% (I think they mean 40%) of total memory used, half of which is mysqld and the rest is spamd.
With no sign of problems, it looks like Virtuozzo is incorrectly reporting memory usage in the system usage meter, but correctly in the system processes list.
The web host's response was:
We use SLM for managing VPSes. This enforces your per VPS limits and doesn't let your VPS use more then it should be. It sounds like you guys may have some memory hogs in your applications.
Have you guys considered cutting down some of the unneeded plugins and stuff?
That doesn't make any sense to me given the disparity between the memory usage meter and the amount of memory usage reported in System Processes and with free/Free as well as the lack of QoS alerts, but maybe SLM prevents any alerts? I don't want to let a memory hog run free on my system if one exists.

On one of my sites, mysql uses most of the resources of the dedicated server. I'm thinking of putting multiple mysql servers at home and the rest in the data centre. Having mysql servers at home does not require much bandwidth does it? would a dsl line work ok?
Server Setup For MySQL + High Bandwidth
Jun 15, 2008if I could get some input on this. Currently I'm running an Opteron 246, 2GB RAM with 2TB bandwidth/mo. I run a single site which is currently 99% HTML, along with an invision forum which is fairly popular. I get about 300-400k pageviews per day.
Right now the server is able to handle this stuff without much of a problem, and the average CPU load is between .5 and 3 (after a TON of tweaking!) - the only exception is when the forum db is being backed up/optimized, which isn't a huge problem since it happens during the off hours.
The problem is that I'm running out of bandwidth quickly, and need to come up with some kind of solution soon. My current provider offers bandwidth at $1/GB, which to me seems crazy compared to other providers, so that's not really an option.
I was thinking about switching to a more affordable provider and upgrading hardware, but I'm not sure what the best approach would be. I'm in the process of moving my HTML content over to a PHP-powered CMS, so I need to make sure whatever I do can handle that... What might be a decent setup for a site like mine which consumes a lot of bandwidth and will probably need more CPU power in the near future for PHP/MySQL stuff?
Fast Webhost, Little Disk Space, With Php, Mysql, Phpmyadmin, And Alot Of Bandwidth
Apr 1, 2008The most important requirement is that the webhost must be fast. It must have alot of bandwidth.
The disc space is not so important. 200 MB would be enough.
It must have PHP, MySQL and phpmyadmin installed.
Must be accesable through FTP.
There are offcourse more requirements. But the main thing is that i want it to be fast.
My pages will be only informative and exists of just mainly text and an image every now and then.
Do you know any fast webhosts that is good to handle websites with large amounts of visitors?
I'm looking for something around 6 dollars per month.
I dont know much about webhosting at all, so i'd appreciate any help i can get
Also i see websites where you can register a domain. But the prices vary, isn't a domain just a domain? What makes this price difference?

Feb 11, 2008I recently had a harddrive failure and luckliy I can still access certain directories on this failed drive. I can still access the /var/lib/mysql/ directory which holds all the users databases and have backed all these up separately using tar.
Now what I need to know is how do you restore these database files to another server? I tried simply untar'ing one of these to the new servers /var/lib/mysql/ direcotry and it stuffed Mysql up - it went offline. I had to get a cpanel tech to bring Mysql back online.

Jan 15, 2007I've been racking my brains with this problem for the last couple of months and have made zero progress. I've asked a lot of people if they know what might be wrong here, but none of them have any idea.
Basically, the problem is that any sort of service monitor I put on my server shows MySQL as being down/offline, even when I know for sure it's up and running perfectly fine. All other services report a green light.
The mysqld service is running on port 3306, which is open both inbound and outbound on my APF config, so as far as I can tell it's nothing to do with the firewall (I won't rule that out though).
The other odd thing is that MySQL shows a green light within WHM, but not anywhere else.
Does anyone know what might be wrong here? Am I missing something entirely fundamental and obvious?

Mar 28, 2007I've rented a dedicated server that comes with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and MySQL 3.23 but I need at least MySQL 4.1 or higher. My knowledge about GNU/Linux is very limited, so I've read some documents at mysql.com and now I think I have to follow these steps:
1. Uninstall MySQL 3.23 with this command line:
shell> rpm -e mysql-*.rpm
2. Install the server and client RPMs of MySQL 5.0:
shell> rpm -i MySQL-server-VERSION.i386.rpm
shell> rpm -i MySQL-client-VERSION.i386.rpm

Bandwidth Hog
Dec 27, 2008Now I keep very close tabs on my site stats. Just tonight one of my sites suddenly showed 167gb for "traffic not viewed".
That was a jump from 5gb over the course of a day.
That was done in 604877 pages and 607138 hits.
Can someone explain to me what "traffic not viewed" actually is within AWSTATS.
Next I located where most of the bw went and it appears to be http code 206 showing 159gb. My latest visitor report for the addon domain only showed one ip with an odd couple direct requests. The referring site was my own cpanel but registered to a ip in India.
How can i locate where the leak is, latest visitors isn't being much help, I have since denied the india ip which i suspect was the problem maker. How can I prevent instances such as this in the future? Being a streaming video site I have the bw to spare but it is still a bit un-nerving.
Now on top of everything Virtuozzo isn't showing anything of the sort, what do i believe?
LSN Bandwidth
May 5, 2009I like the LSN server company and have a server there that I plan to keep forever, they do a great job just that I am confused about their bandwidth. Also the prices aren’t exact!
Just wondering what everyone else here thinks about this:
So... LSN are doing a Q9300 server at the moment for $130 “ish” with 2TB of bandwidth. Now let’s say someone wants an extra 0.5TB of bandwidth they pay around $50 for it and if they want 1TB they pay about $95.
So you buy a server for $130 and get 2TB of bandwidth and also the costs of the hardware, space, power is covered for the hardware. Yet they charge nearly the same price for 1TB extra to a single server, which uses no extra space, hardware or power. Another thing is they charge $25 server to pool the bandwidth between your servers.
So what I see:
2 Servers 4TB B/W @ $260 + $50 (pooling charge) = $310
1 Server 3TB B/W @ $230
1 Server 4TB B/W @ $300
So as you can see from the above you can get twice the space, RAM, CPU and Power for only $10 more? Surely it costs them more than the $10?
Also my final point is LSN have a private network, that is not bandwidth monitored and your servers can use, I asked LSN if you could tunnel the traffic from one server to another, their answer was “yes if you have the technical knowledge to do so”... Well that would get rid of the $50 pooling costs... making it actually alot cheaper to get two servers.
How Much Bandwidth Is Too LITTLE
Apr 19, 2009I'm looking to get a VPS offshore (please look at my other threads/posts to learn why) primarily for email for 4 or 5 domain names (most of which I'd download to my desktop but would also backup on the server) as well as perhaps to run a virtual desktop through and/or store some data.
For ease of use (for ME at least), I'd install (or have installed) a CP and probably run Centos 5 or Debian as the OS on the VPS. I won't be running websites from the VPS and I'll be the only user.
I've seen offers of all types related to bandwidth but, in some countries, bandwidth is expensive and they offer little as a result. How do I determine how much bandwidth I need for what I want to do and how do I know what's too little?

Lets say I have 10 VPS on that server, is there a way to limit them to 1Mbps each? Or do something like:

T1 Of Bandwidth Too Little
May 13, 2008I've found a colocation company that gives me as the default 1.544Mbps as the initial bandwidth. I think this is OK for me most of the time, the problem is their bandwidth isn't really 'burstable', and If I want to expand to more bandwidth, my options are something like buying another T1's worth muxed in for $250.
Is this strange? Old-fashioned? Should I be worried about this?

Best Way To Pay For Bandwidth
Feb 5, 2007Is it better to pay for 95th percentile or (what ever that is) is it better to pay per GB used.
I pay per 100GB used and I can upgrade it at anytime during the month which makes it very easy to manage but I would like to more about the differences here.
My issue is and not really that big of one but when I have paid for 400GB and then on the last day of the month I go to 410GB and have to buy 100GB more so I do not get charged overages. I end up with 90GB left unused which someone is banking my cash on.
Besides that I think this really works well for me.
Which way do most co-lo users pay?
