Any VPS Provider Supports Clone Of Virtual Machine
Sep 19, 2007
I want to be able to clone a existing virtual machine image(whether it's openvz or xen) and deploy it.
It's sort of like Amazon EC2.
I want to set up a virtual machine image once. Then deploy it(it doesn't matter whether it's on the same physical machine or not) to a new machine or overriding existing image on a existing machine. It's fine that the VPS provider charge me a monthly charge for every virtual machine I deploy.
This way, I only need to maintain one master virtual machine.
It'd be even better if I can export a image to my own machine, modify it locally, then upload it for deployment.
I am currently researching the options open to me for Virtualisation, the two main ones I have seen are Xen or KVM.
I mainly use CentOS (RHEL), but have read that the version of Xen with it is very old, broken and unstable. KVM isn't included in the kernel that ships with CentOS, as it is too old, apparently it was first featured in Kernel v2.6.20. There isn't likely to be an update till RHEL6, which is due for release first quarter of 2010. I can't wait over a year, so need to find another Distro for use as the Host OS/Hypervisor.
I have built a pretty powerful server, it has an Intel Xeon 3230 which has VT - so I might be better off using KVM over Xen. I am going to collocate this server, so realistically I can make this decision only once - as it would be a PITA to re-install a host Linux distro remotely.
I did a search on distrowatch for distros with the latest version of the kernel, and Slackware came up as being just one minor version behind the most current (v2.6.27.7).
Now this distro is very mature, so should be a fairly safe bet, but it is a 32bit version and can't host 64bit VMs. I have 8GB of ram so want to be able to use it all, and offer the choice of 32/64bit VMs. So that's that out of the window.
I have used Arch Linux on and off for a couple of years as a workstation OS, but because it is so bleeding edge, when pacman updates it can break itself. But I suppose if I just use it as the Host OS, and never let it update/reboot, then it won't break. It should be fairly lightweight and stable, as I will be installing the bare minimum packages. I have a management card, so if the server fails to boot, then I can still remote in to fix it.
If I do want to update the kernel, is it possible to update without rebooting? I think it is somehow... unless I can just reboot during an unused time at 3am or something.
As you can tell I am leaning towards KVM on Arch Linux (x86_64). Is this a good plan?
I've set up a website using a no ip-account, nothing fancy or business-oriented, and I have it working this way:
no-ip(port 80 redirect to port 6500)->router(redirect port 6500 to pc2 with ip 192.168.1.3)->pc2(vmware server redirects port 6500 to virtual machine with ip 192.168.60.100, which is running an asp .net server serving on port 6500)
The router does not forward any port other than that one, but I would like to know if this has any risk for the other machines on the lan.
Can someone suggest me good Free virtual machine software? To be able to run on linux platform, and able to run windows, linux, unix and bsd systems from ISO files.
I've started looking into KVM to possibly to run alongside or even to end up replacing our current Xen infrastructure. The fact that it's built into the mainstream linux kernel is very appealing.
Are there any Control panels/basic frontends for this at the moment to allow users to Reboot/Reimage their VM's? At the moment its looking as though we would need something inhouse or custom developed
I had no problem installing Wordpress Mu with iPower. Unfortunately iPower really sucks for performance (I have paid one full year though so I have to keep them ).
So I have moved to Hostgator but I'm struggling: there are many things that need to be done to be able to install it and I can't even do it myself only the admin can.
At the moment I'm still waiting.
So I'm looking for another webhosting service again - though I will stay with hostgator because of their outstanding support service - just for being able to install Wordpress Mu.
I'm starting a youtube clone / streaming video site and I need some info on hosting and bandwidth.
1.) Does anyone have any information, or can provide me with a link to information, about the costs required?
2.) I know bandwidth is the biggest cost. Does anyone know what kind of prices I will be paying per gigabyte? I heard its 5 - 15 cents per gigabyte (and dropping) - is this accurate, and where can i get the best rate while still having a reliable host that can handle a lot of traffic? Is there any kind of a list out there?
3.) Besides bandwith, what other costs are involved - for example, is storage space expensive? Will I need a dedicated server, and how much does this run? Other costs?
I have a need to create about 50 clones of a user account. Obviously, they would each have thier own url and username.
I have WHM and root access to my server.
The reason I want to clone is because it will save massive time versus doing each one individually because the sites are exactly the same. My client is basically just using a parking page script.
I just purchased a 500GB ATA hard drive (meant to get SATA but must have misordered, but I don't think it makes that much difference) to replace a 80GB SATA hard drive on a Windows Server 2003 server. There are two partitions on the 80GB drive, and rather than add the new HD as a third partition, I would like to clone the data on the 80GB drive to the 500GB drive, then increase the partition sizes and remove the 80GB completely. Is there a specific method or software I can use to accomplish this?
I am finishing up on my clients site and the ecommerce software we use has an option for search engine friendly URL's but your server must support $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] . My client is hosted by GoDaddy and my host (HostGator) does not support it unless you go dedicated.
I need $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] Dedicated IP, PHP, MySQL, .htaccess support preferably CPanel - not Plesk Less than $120 / year
I am looking for a well established company like the ones I previously mentioned because my client wants peace of mind and I don't want to screw him over.
web host that offers a shared hotsing account that allows users to install or already have installled perl modules like mod_perl and template toolkit using cpanel.
i have found a nice script "phpmotion.com" and it´s freeee and i need help to upgrade the software of my vps.
i have a linux vps cpanel/whm 512ram guaranteed 30GB space 450GB bandwith...
how can i upgrade the gd library to higher version(captcha code not working on my sites) and what is the command line to write on ssh console for this software:
- FFMpeg - LAME MP3 Encoder - Libogg + Libvorbis - Mencoder and also Mplayer - FFMpeg-PHP - Be able to run background processes
I'm looking for low cost VPS service that supports the following:
1. Can be used to setup as a VPN (virtual private network) server. 2. Can be used to setup as an IRC server. 3. Host one or a few small websites that are mostly static, and serves no more than 1000 page view daily impression. 4. Host email POP3/SMTP services 5. Physically located in the U.S., Japan, or Korea 6. Linux platform
The VPN and IRC service will be used by a private group of no more than 20 people. So does email. The server itself will serve as a gateway for us to work together, and maybe serve as a test platform. The services won't be open to the public. The IRC server will be for chatting only, and it won't be used for file distributing. There will be no P2P or illegal file sharing involved. We expect space usage of less than 5GB, and monthly bandwidth usage less than 200GB.
I'm still not sure which virtualizer is better between Xen and OpenVZ.
I've been using SiteGround for about two years now and want to upgrade. Here is what SiteGround offers: siteground.com/hosting_features.htm
I would prefer a shared server that meets the following requirements, but if this isn't possible, directing me to a site with dedicated servers would be great.
- Must have PHP/MySQL support with at least a few MySQL databases
- Must support ffmpeg, flvtool2, and mencoder (I want to add a videos section on my site using a script that requires those)
- I'd really really like ASP support along with PHP support, but the above requirements are more important to me
And I'd like it to be about even or better than my current hosting, overall. Good customer support, very low downtime, etc.
I have a client who needs a solid webhost that supports MS exchange server for his email.
I usually recommend Bluehost , but I guess they don’t do this. Quick turnaround time on email tech issues (2-4 hours) and phone support is also needed. The client is definitely a phone person.
It should be Wordpress friendly. My CMS that I'm using is actually Textpattern, but most people don't know it so I just opt for the default popular version, Wordpress.
Is it possible to clone centos 4.6.x + cpanel 11 hard drive to brand new disk with same capacity? just like we clone hard drives in windows with noton ghost ?.
I have a server with failing hard drive (smart errors) and drive must be replaced soon but i feel lazy to restore everything from backup hard drive and was thinking it will be smart to just copy mirror of primary hard drive from original hard drive to knew one. Is this possible?
I do have 2 backup copies, so don't worry about that .
Btw, i found this link which says its possible but i am not sure. Please suggest.
I'm desperately looking for a dedicated host that supports/guarentees that bridged networking VMware workstations will work on their network. Reason being is Zenix5ive bridged our VMware workstations fine with external IP addresses perfectly but their service is terrible! So I'm looking for a provider with a much faster network that supports bridged networking, and they know for a fact it works because I'm tired of paying money to do trial and error on whether it works or not!
If anybody uses bridged networking on their VM's and their network is fast please let me know which provider you use...
to install in my VPS the vShare script and I have a headache with this issue, and I decide to contract an installation service. HostOnNet offers this service by $25.
I want to know if you meet this company or other that offers the same. I don't matter the price, if they are good.
I have a video site (just embedding) that is pretty small right now. I do not need a dedicated server just yet.
I am currently using westhost and they do not support the typical suite of video software needed to convert videos to flvs. I would like to know if there are any reliable hosts with good support that offer installation of the following software on a shared vps:
