First of all, I am from Australia. Some people might know here dedicated servers cost a lot coz bandwidth is extremely expensive. I am hiring a box to put dedicated game servers on them (Counter Strike Source). I am looking for a Windows Firewall and Anti Virus. I am also wondering what version of Windows 2003 server should I get. Do I need to get real time protection and email scanner? And also, is it wise to download and browse TRUSTED sites on the server?
can anyone recommend firewall software for Windows 2003 Server. I'm aware it has a firewall on board, but this one doesn't allow me to specific access to specific IP address on the server, which are configured on a single adapter.
Also, I've looked into IPsec, which is my backup solution if I cannot find a decent firewall. Unfortunately, IPsec is kind of restrictive and not particularly stateful.
I'm looking for a simple firewall, which is not too expensive. This is only for one simple server.
Recently, there have been brute force attacks to try and compromise my sa password (MSSQL) and root password (MYSQL).
I would like to block certain ip addresses, but looking in the built in firewall in windows I don't see a way to do this. Is this possible with the built in tools/firewall that comes with windows 2003?
If not, can anybody recommend a simple firewall solution that will allow me to block ip addresses? I don't want something that is bloated and blocks popups, viruses, adware, etc. I just want a solution that will allow me to block ip addresses and prevent brute force attacks.
I am trying to find a firewall for windows 2003 64 bit edition. So far I have tried Visnetic, which doesn't work, and comodo will not even have a beta version out until May. Anyone know of another that will work on 64 bit windows?
good software firewall solution that will allow me to block certain IP addresses from all ports.
The problem is that, the only way I have access to the server is via remote desktop. I found when you install almost all software firewall solutions, that it requires a restart. The problem here is that after the restart I probably wont have access to the server via remote desktop because it will be blocked by default by the new software firewall.
What is the solution? How do I install a firewall solution but have access to the machine via remote desktop by default?
I am trying to purchase either a anti-ddos or firewall machine. My main objective is to prevent from ddos attack.
Do i purchase a anti-ddos hardware (please recommend), or firewall hardware (please recommend)?
anti-ddos and firewall is the same right? is about ip analyse and filter right?
After using the ddoss/firewall , i may also want to subscribe to those third party doss prevention which has big bandwidth, if i have a good hardware anti-ddos/firewall already, do i still need to have subscribe to these services?
trying to secure my new server that will be opening for shared hosting.
So far I've found:
CHKRootKit, RKHunter, and ClamAV
As for Firewall, I've setup CSF but my question is, what is a good setting for blocking SYN Floods without blocking clients who might be browsing their site and, using DA, and FTP.
In the past I've used:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -m limit --limit 1/s --limit-burst 3 -j DROP iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn -m limit --limit 3/s --limit-burst 5 -j DROP and took down some pretty big attacks, but it was very touchy.
I'm running Windows Server 2003 and I use Symantec End Point Protection v11. I'm not satisfied with it nor am I confident it is the best virus protection software.
What do you suggest for the best protection of a Windows 2003 server?
Is antivirus necessary in Windows Server with IIS6? I am hosting several web pages and web applications(ASP.NET) on two servers for three years, never have any problem with viruses.
What antivirus would you suggest to use? I have tried AVG and NOD and they are very massive and slow down web applications.
With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box?
Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?
My client have a windows 2003 Sever, we install xampp there to run his site because he gave us hosting information late on and we done all his work in mysql php,
so every thing is working but the main problem is this that queries are not going through email.
This is my first dedicated and I am plugging away at it.I am running windows server 2003 web edition and I have my database, website, and ftp setup and everything is working so far. Now if you go to 66.96.196.102 my site that I'm working on will show up. My question is my domain and site that I am in the process of moving is hosted on a shared server on 1and1. Now I need that domain to point to that ip. Do I need to set up name servers on the server? If so can someone point me in th right direction.
We have two Windows Server 2003 machines as active directory controllers and DNS servers for our in-house operations. For our purposes, let's say the domain name is example.com.
Both servers have DNS, and example.com is stored in Active Directory to allow us to use the benefits this provides. Our issue is probably simple, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Let's call server one EX1, and server two EX2. These have local IPs of 192.168.1.111 and 192.168.1.112, respectively.
We want example.com to be resolved to an external IP address (for web hosting), let's say 1.2.3.4. The problem is, the two domain controllers keep registering example.com with their internal IP addresses .111 and .112, so the DNS round-robins between 1.2.3.4 and the two internal servers, which aren't web servers.
Is there a way we can get those DNS controllers to stop registering their internal IPs as example.com?
i am starting up a buisness running my own web servers and the licensing system for windows Server 2003 standard is really confusing and i was wondering if someone could give a simple explaination if possible.
I will be using these servers for Plesk web hosting.
and with CALs if i am renting out Dedicated servers and they use win server 2003 would i pre install CALs on it or would customer do that.
I have a server running Win 2003 server at a data centre.Microsoft has released SP2 but mine is SP1.I have no access to the server physically and I wonder can I install SP2 using remote desktop? Will I get logout halfway?
It is possible to have anti-virus and anti-spam enabled by default when we go to "CREATE E-MAIL ADRESS" -> "SPAM FILTER" / "ANTI-VIRUS" is always disabled.
