Windows Vista, Passive FTP, Linksys Routers
Jan 21, 2008
My roommate ran into this problem a few weeks ago. He could not connect to a webserver. Turns out it is the way that some of the ports are being handled when passive FTP is used.
I was wondering if a lot of web hosting companies are seeing some complaints of (passive) FTP not working properly? And who are you blaming?
He had to install some firmware updates to the Linksys router as well but then that started to crash the Internet connection (something we cannot have). So the router update was uninstalled.
He had to do quite a bit and finally started to use the control panel to upload. He has not tried FileZilla yet but I tried it on my system to connect to his server and it failed.

I do not know if this is the right forum to post on, or if this is even the right site since this is not technically "Web Hosting" related, however it is the largest technical community I know of.
I have been setting up small networks in various branches of a medical company. I am using a linksys wired router connected to a static IP through a SDSL modem. The DHCP is disabled, and the two computers and the print server have also been assigned static IPs.
The problem I am having is that the linksys router will work fine, and then go offline.
The linksys router will no longer be pingable internally. Unplugging the router from the power briefly then plugging it back in resolves the problem temporarily. Sometimes it will become unresponsive again within 30 seconds to a minute, however other times it will go days without this problem occuring.
I thought it might be a defective router, however I took it back and got a replacement, however this is continuing to occur, so it must be something else. The two computers are Windows XP with static IPs set to 10.88.102.xxx as well as the print server. and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. The gateway has the IP 10.88.102.1. The mask is set as the same on the router side. The DNS server IPs are the ones given by the ISP and are defined in both the client TCP properties and on the router.
I figured since the network was so small, it would make sense to just buy a cheap linksys router, however the response I got from someone at experts-exchange says that this is just the MO of the crappy residential end of linksys. This surprises me since linksys is a division of cisco.

Well, my company got a Windows 2003 Small Business Server and most of our workstations were running Windows Vista. Now I ran into some issues I thought I'd document for the benefit of those attempting connections of Vista Business and up workstations to a Windows 2003 Small Business Server:
Windows 2003 Small Business Server Vista and Outlook 2007 Compatibility Upgrade
Before you throwing your Vista clients at your Windows 2003 Small Business Server, you're going to need to make sure you have the Windows Vista and Outlook 2007 compatibility update as outlined by KB926505, the knowledge base entry on Vista and Windows 2003 SBS. This will require a restart of the server to fully apply the effects of the patch.
Updating workstations with existing users
Now, you add your users through the Server Management tool, and it tells you to run [url]on the client workstation to setup the process. Before you do this, you need to separate out your systems with existing users (and thus profiles) and your systems with no established users. For the ones that have existing users, you'll need to install a Win32_UserProfile WMI patch. If you don't apply this patch, then you can't migrate your local PC user settings to the Windows 2003 SBS associated user when you run the setup (Unless you install the patch, then re-run the wizard).
Running the connection wizard
Okay, so let's say your server is named SBS2003, now you point your client workstation to [url]and you'll be asked for the username and password of an existing user on the Windows 2003 SBS. Enter it in and 2 things can happen:
Runs without a hitch
You get an error about copying Client Setup files
Now here's the painful one. There's a number of ways to approach this issue, so be sure to go through them all:
Point your DNS servers to the Windows 2003 SBS and ONLY the Windows 2003 SBS. This solved my particular issue.
You may have an issue with required encryption in IIS. See this post for a possible solution.
You may have an issue with TCP offload. Check this post for more information. Basically you need to disable it.
IIS is bound to a specific IP. Try changing it to "All Unassigned" instead.
Now then, the wizard should run, and your workstation should now be latched onto the domain Not quite done yet though.
Network Discovery
I found my workstations couldn't see network machines after I attached them to the network. Trying to turn on Network Discovery in the Network Sharing Center seemed to fail. To rectify this, I took 2 steps:
Enabled Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) for the domain to get my network map. You'll also need to make sure LLTD is enabled on your NIC properties as well (in the form of a checked box).
I had to turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing in the Windows Firewall settings. To do this I did: Control Panel
Windows Firewall
Bring up the exceptions tab
Make sure Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing were enabled
Then viola, network thar she blows. Also, I found that when I shared directories on the Windows 2003 SBS and the client had permissions to access the share, it wouldn't showup until I went to the Publish tab in the share's properties on the server and made it published on active directory. After doing that and refreshing my Windows 2003 SBS showed up in the Network.

I'd like to ask for opinion what is the best way to backup a client PC in Windows XP/Vista platform.
For example, each PC has a folder inside c:Server
Every 17:00 hours, the PC will FTP all data inside c:Server to backup server.
When it is done, the manager is able to access to his files & do his work remotely online via the server at night in his home. Another reason to have this backup is because they want to secure all the files from any viruses or any accidents in the office during non office hours as the files is important to them. The next morning, he is able to continue his work as normal when files are being merged.
Any kind of such solution available?

I use a Linksys BEFW11S4 at my home and at my office. A few months back I replaced the one at my office with a linux gateway because I found some weird routes to Department of Defense IP addresses. I assumed there was a backdoor or something but didn't give it any more thought.
I'm now looking at the static routes on my home router and I found something very peculiar. I've attached the screenshots.
Basically there is a static route to 128.60.31.208 which according to ARIN is registered to the "Naval Research Laboratory". The subnet mask looks very very odd - 124.171.0.0
Perhaps I'd just assume that this was a firmware bug, but isn't it a big coincidence that the first time I found routes to the DoD and now I'm finding routes to Naval Research Laboratory?

i have just installed esx server from vmware which as far as i know is a moded version of redhat. i just brought that lan card and put it in. when intsalling the os it seemed to pick it up straight away. and it wanted to use the tulip driver and infact on the driver cd tuplip is given. so i thought it was all well uptill i tried logging in through the browser insterface. it came up with nothing. so i did ifconfig which only showed the lo device. i then did a lsmod tulpis ind it brought up this.
vmnixmod size 3

usb-uhci
usbcore
but no network drive.
im not very good with linuk so im not sure what the interface is called. i tried ifconfig eth0 up but i dont know how to check if its called eth0 or somehting else. their is no gui just a bash.
i then tried netconfig. it worked fine and i restarted the box. it still dident come up.
so i thought maybe the driver wasent installed after all so i went to the cd and got the file off it and when i typed in make i got

I am on a tight budget for a Cisco firewall. I am browsing and seeing some affordable options in the x600 series.
Please tell me, which series is best?:
1600
2600
3600
The higher the better?..
Also what about submodels, like is 1650 better than 1600?
And how can I tell how much DRAM each one can take up to?

Has anyone here successfully implemented two or more OpenBSD routers for the purpose of BGP'ing between two or more providers?
My intention is to have the following setup, each line is per provider:
--> BSD Router --> Switch --> Bridge Firewall --> Switch --> ...
'''''''''|'''''''''''|''''''''''''''|'''''''''''''''|
--> BSD Router --> Switch --> Bridge Firewall --> Switch --> ...
'''''''''|'''''''''''|''''''''''''''|'''''''''''''''|
--> BSD Router --> Switch --> Bridge Firewall --> Switch --> ...
The idea would be that I could lose any 15A circuit, switch, firewall or service provider and still remain up. Full routes for the routers. Spanning tree on all the switches.
We have the OpenBSD routers up and running in our lab, I'd say they are 90% ready, but we're having internal routing issues when it comes time to fail-over. I know we'd have an easier time if we used just one router with a NIC per provider, but I was hoping for more redundancy.

However..it's time to learn.
There is no doubt in my mind I'm going to Houston. The prices they have..it's unreal. Take a look:
[url]
And that's just one. The real fun starts when they start beating each other's quotes.
Ok..on to what need here:
If I have a cage at Level 3..is there a way to estimate routing/switching needs on a per-rack basis? In other words..can you estimate: Ok 1 full rack...say...30 servers..and you're bringing in one of those 100mbps eth drops...to start.
and you want capacity for..say..three more racks from the getgo.
Is there software for this? Or can you guesstimate on ip use-how many ips you think you'll need routing for?

We have the requirement to guarantee bandwith to one of our clients.
We have a large collection of vlans and we either need to guarantee bandwith to a set and from a set of IP's or a vlan.
We currently throttle using rate-limit but wan't to dedicate 2mb of our 10mb leased line to 1 client.
We are using a cisco 3600 running IOS 12.0.
Has anyone got any ideas as to how we can go about this?

I have a server with several sites hosted on it. Randomly, a site user will find that they can no longer connect to any of the sites on the server - but they can connect to the rest of the Internet. When this happens, the sites themselves are fine and everyone else can connect without any problems.
The only way the affected user can view sites on the server again is to reboot their router - at which point everything is fine.
why this would happen? I have a CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise) Linux server with DirectAdmin, Apache, PHP/MySQL - the usual. I'm thinking that there must be some kind of network setting which is allowing this to happen, but I can't for the life of me work out what it is.

I'm running a Win2003 dedicated server with IIS and Plesk v9. While trying to configure my FTP ports I found out that my host has a basic (free) hardware firewall on my main/shared IP with ports 2000-2015 reserved for passive FTP connections. I asked them if they could change the ports to match the default ones but to customize hardware firewall settings I'm require to upgrade to a paid solution.
I again tried to approach the problem by trying to get IIS to conform to the host's ports. However after some research I found that the default MSFTP range is 1025-5000 while custom values have to be between 5001-65535. My host recommends I upgrade to a personal hardware firewall or make do with a software firewall. Other than dropping the firewall is there nothing I can do here?
I've thought of serving FTP on a dedicated IP (which would be exempted from the hardware firewall) but when I tried to set it up I got a directory permission error during connection attempts. I may be mistaken but this appears to be an an issue with Plesk not liking to serve a website's HTTP and FTP on separate IPs. Is solving this problem my best bet?

We're building-out a new room, and believe we could raise cold aisle temps about 5 degrees F if we use ducted cabinet exhaust. Heat density is limited by traditional cold air supply (e.g. 7kw per cabinet using AirGrate perf tiles), so I'm focusing on passive ducted exhaust.
We can purchase via any rep in the USA, FOB. So far, I'm aware of:
- CPI/Chatsworth TeraFrame
- Wrightline
- Wrightline HCS for APC NetShelter
- Damac
- custom?

Do you still have to add each port individually to Server 2008's Firewall like we did on Server 2003?
If so, will the guides that were put out for 2003 work on 2008's? I want to be sure before putting all these ports in....if I can just specify a range instead, it would be much easier!

I have some issues with the plesk firewall:
1. Emails are not delivered:
From some reasons, plesk is blocking incoming 25 port (in plesk shows opened, but it's not)My emails are delivered trough port 25, after doing some tests ( i've sent some emails to an email account hosted in the server) there was no email in the roundcube inbox! All emails were blocked...
a) Firewall was blocking the port 25 on server restart.
b) I have succesfully unblocked it from plesk manager -> tools -> edit/change -> even if i didn't change anything, i saved the "changes" and in my roundcube inbox i recived all the test emails.
c) In /var/log/maillog there is no error.
2. Passive FTP gets blocked in the same way, to successfully connect FireFTP on passive mode i need to repeat 1.b steps even if i've created a special rule to prevent the blocking, opening 49152-65534 ports and set PassivePorts 49152 65534 in /etc/proftpd.conf
The issue appears randomly, because in the last 5 days i didn´t restart the server, the last time i checked it worked. Today, without touching anything, firewall blocked my passive FTP and I had probmels reciving emails from gmail, yahoo etc...

I have Plesk Firewall Installed.
After the Plesk Firewall was enabled the FTP Stopped working in passive Mode.
I searched the net and found the following :
Code:
/etc/sysconfig/iptables-config and change the line with IPTABLES_MODULES to: IPTABLES_MODULES="ip_conntrack_ftp"
It started working.
I changed the default FTP port from proftpd.conf
Code:
port 2392
and /etc/services
Code:
ftp 2392/tcp
ftp 2392/udp fsp fspd
I allowed the new port in Plesk Firewall in Incoming connection and disabled port 21
Now I am not able to connect to the ftp, I get the following error. Have I missed anything ?
