Windows VPS With Extra RAM

Apr 16, 2009

I'm looking for a VPS running Windows Server (preferably 2008, but 2003 is also OK) with 4GB of RAM. Disk space, provided it's at least 50GB, and bandwidth, provided it's at least 100GB/month, aren't really that important.

I've been scouring WHT and Google for something that will meet my needs but have not yet been successful. Does anyone know where I can find such a VPS? Or is there nothing out there and should I concentrate on fully dedicated products?

Extra Gig Of Ram

Aug 11, 2007

Server is running fine on 2GB memory on Xeon 3060 running on Apache 1.3, php 4.4.6 and mysql 4.1.21

It's only used to host a forum with about 80 members online and a multimedia download section.

Would it be a big difference if I upgrade to 3GB? Like will it support more downloads at once without boggind down the server? Which stuff should I tweak in apache and mysql config to make use of extra gig of ram?

Use Of Extra IP Addresses?

Jul 24, 2008

Although I have switch to using VPS for some time, I still have a question in mind.

Most registrars need 2 ns which 2 IPs are sufficent. Why some hostings are giving 4 IPs?

I ever sign up with one hosting which give 1 IP. If a minimum of 2 IPs is needed, what else can I do other than pay money for an extra IP? Feel cheated.

Extra Bandwidth

Oct 17, 2007

i was ddos'ed heavily two months ago and my host decided to invest in some ips hardware. even after installation, the targeted ip still had to be null-routed. because of the ddos, i was told the incoming bandwidth was going over my commit (500mbit?) and I had to increase my commit from 100 to 200mbit.

the attacks are over now, but i am stuck with paying for the commit. i am still under contract and i cannot exactly move 22U's of machines easily. i don't know how to proceed. I do not really want to sublease my cabinet out, but i also do not want to pay the extra costs for something that i am not using. I do not mind paying a one-time payment for the bandwidth cost during the attacks, but .. oh well.

has anyone ever subleased their cabinet? what kind of terms should i be offering and watching out for?

Type Of KVM/IP Switch With Something Extra

Jan 2, 2008

KVM/IP switches are a wonderfull thing, aren't they?

Lifesavers they can be..

Anyway, I'm looking for a module compareable to KVM/IP, but with the extra feature to remotely mount an image using an USB port of a server.

Basically so its possible to install a server remotely over IP, w/o having a physicall CD in the KVM/IP switch (or using hardware similar to IPMI's from HP/Dell/SM). Does such hardware excist?

I don't need multiple users to log in, or to control multiple server at the same time (login for each server would be handy though). Only 6~8 ports are required.

The only problem I could forsee with it is that my rack might get messy.. 8 servers, 8x2 powercable (A+B), plus 8x2 UTP, plus KVM, plus USB..

Is Pair Worth The Extra Cost

Pair is really well respected (from what I've heard), but their dedicated servers are a lot more expensive than many I've looked at. I've honestly wanted to use them because of their reputation, and my uptime being critical, but wanted to see if there are less expensive servers who are just as good...

Setup Extra Mailserver For Newsletters

Jun 29, 2008

i have a webserver (mailserver) already running example ABC.com now i want to buy extra server that will be used only to send newsletter to members of ABC.com. Is it possible to do it? Also i dont want to break the existing mailserver as it is used by staff so this new server has to operate independently but of course this has to appear and has to be legitimate.

One of my idea is to setup a subdomain for ABC.com lets say mail2.abc.com and point to a new server but again how it will appear if i send email from info@abc.com when its subdomain!

1and1 Won't Host A Domain Name Without Extra Charge?

Jun 7, 2009

I was looking for a domain name and registered it with 1and1 last year, for UK 11 pounds approximately. I then found that they were also charging me approx 30 UK pounds every six months for web hosting space that I did not ask for as I have a great host elsewhere. I have gone to their site and tried to cancel the web hosting while retaining the domain name but it only allows me to cancel the domain name, which I don't want to do. I have tried contacting them multiple times over this additional charge and get stonewalled every time with a standard response that the money is due on my contract. In the circumstances I would like to transfer the domain name to another host as renewal is a couple of months away, but I'm scared that they'll find some way to stop me doing that? ....

Is It Worth The Extra Cost Of Using A UK Hosting Company For A UK Site

Mar 28, 2007

I'm just about to buy my first commercial hosting package. I'm leaning towards 1 and 1 hosting, but I don't know whether to go for the US or UK version.
The US version:
costs $2.99 a month
with 10GB storage and 300GB transfer

The UK version:
costs £4.49 a month (about $8)
with 1.5 GB storage and 20GB transfer

Are there many big / important advantages to going with a local host, and is it worth the extra cost?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Adding Extra IP Addresses To Panel - FTP Query

Jun 2, 2014

I have just added some extra IP addresses to my plesk panel from 1&1

CentOS 5.6 (Final)
Panel version11.5.30 Update #45

I have changed a couple of domains to have their own IP address - one marked as shared, the other as dedicated.

I can not log in to either via FTP since changing to a new IP address, the DNS has been changed to reflect this change over and resolves correctly.

I have used the domain name, original IP address and new IP address as the host address with filezilla on windows and mac, and smart ftp on windows.

All accept the username and password, but then all of them timeout with ETIMEOUT error.

Existing domains on the original IP address log in fine via FTP.

Can any settings or anything on the server hosting software, etc, precipitate or stop this?

Is Windows 2008 Slower Than Windows 2003

May 8, 2008

I'm making a reasonably uninformed comparison here. Since Windows Vista is noted to be more resource intensive and slower than Win XP, are we right in assuming that Windows 2008 is slower than Windows 2003?

For instance, with two boxes with an identical hardware setup but the two different server OSes, will the same application like, say MySQL run slower on the Win 2008 machine?

Do Shared Windows Hosters Actually Like Windows Technology

Dec 10, 2008

There seem to be strong forum rules in place about the kinds of posts that hosters can make.

But from my perspective it is somehow leaving a large gap in useful information I would like to know that I can't quite put my finger on right now.

So I would like to get responses from Windows hosters in this thread without violating any forum spam guidelines and I sure hope I'm not wasting my time here with this concept but here goes...

So, the topic:

Ultimately, the thing Windows Web Hosters are providing is the delivery of information that has been constructed by developers using program code they have assembled using a large array of mostly .NET technology.

The reason the Hoster is providing Windows hosting is that a sufficiently large enough population of Web Developers have been attracted to some aspect of the Windows technology stack.

And there is certainly lots of innovative and interesting technology that attracts developers to focus on .NET in just the same way that there is also interesting technology in the Linux world.

So here's the problem. It appears as if the Windows hosting companies with the odd exception have almost no interest in Windows and .NET technology.

But if they actually did have such an interest, it is not clear how they would communicate it for discussion here at WHT because of the spam rules and of course trying to communicate anything at all about hosting on the general internet is just swamped by spam. The noise level is just insane!

So I am hoping that such a discussion can take place in this thread by asking some very specific questions:

1. What interesting Microsoft technology have you researched, tested or played with lately?

2. What programs or scripts have you personally developed lately to investigate .NET 3.5 features?

3. What do you think of XBAP delivery from the net and why do you think it hasn't caught on in a larger way since it sure delivers a richer client experience than Flash or even Silverlight.

4. What do you think of Azure and will Microsoft let hosters be part of the cloud anytime soon? Can you think of useful or interesting Azure mashups from a hosting perspective?

5. Have you tried any totally silly and insane things with the .NET runtime inside of SQL Server 2005/2008 that would give your DB guys a heart attack?

6. Have you tried out the Google systems where you give your employees 20% of company time to play around with personal projects like this?

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: PHP Missing After 12.0.18 Update On Windows

Aug 11, 2014

Latest Update 12.0.18 Update 12 appears to have removed PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.5 from my dropdown under hosting settings.

The only PHP that is left is PHP 5.3

Yet, the updates and upgrades page still lists PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.5 as installed.

Also PHP is still working on the virtual websites that were previously enabled with either 5.4 or 5.5, but not able to change using the Plesk Panel.

Given that Parallels has broken the Panel in that latest automatic update I'd hope it can be resolved ASAP.

I can't even find any references in the KB about Plesk 12 on Windows regarding PHP versions

I can even give feedback about the broken patch as every feedback channel requires paid support.
