Server Overload - Fixed By Extra RAM Or More Powerful CPU

Jul 3, 2008

I have a fairly busy server, and received a High Load warning from my firewall monitoring software. Showing a high 5 minute load average alert of 13.89.

I'm presuming extra memory and a more powerful CPU would be required to sort this out?

5 Min Load Avg: 13.89
15 Min Load Avg: 5.82

How Powerful Of A Server Do I Need

May 21, 2007

I've been tasked with finding a web server for my office. I won't be the one managing it, but I'm supposed to figure out what to purchase. It's pretty low volume. We'll have a max of 20GB/month. We're planning to use Apache, PHP, & mySQL to run a couple of sites based on Wordpress and Movable Type. I figure we probably don't need much, but I just want to make sure before I go recommending something that isn't sufficient. Right now, I'm looking at a low end server with a 3GHz P4, 1GB of DDR 400, and a 7200 RPM hard drive.

Where To Host A Powerful SQL Server

Jun 4, 2009

I have a project coming up to host a self developed database app on a web based SQL server. We have received the prepayment for the server rent for 24 months already and are currently looking for the best possible provider.

Requirements:
Uptime and service response is critical for us. We want an unmanaged server but require the best possible response time in case of hardware defects or network issues (DDoS).

In the beginning the user base (small) will mainly be in Europe but with the tendency to grow more continents. I’d like a US east cost location with a speedy connect to EU but would consider an EU provider with a good rep.

Server specs:

I7 processor for fast RAM access
12GB DDR3 RAM (probably more later)
2 x SSD 80GB in Raid 1 (planning to go RAID10 on 4 disks later)
Hardware Raid controller
2 TB traffic /month
Windows Server Std 2003 x64
SQL Server 2008
Unmanaged. No help needed with server config.
We intend to keep the same hardware for 24 months. So rent to own might be an option Large upfront payment are ok to reduce monthly costs.
Hardware SLA would be nice
KVMoIP would be nice

Firewall:
Dedicated unit would be nice but we have no experience here and would need full support.

i want to kill apache/http and restart it again automatically. i need this because sometime we are not in front of the server to fix an overload issue immediately, which can affect a server very badly. i believe many of us already face this kind of situation and hope there is some kind of script or way to do this.

Server Overload :: Don't Ignore This Email ... Cpu Has Been Maxed Out For ...

Sep 29, 2008

I have been receiving these a couple time a day lately and not sure what to do or how to go about checking what might be overloading the server. IF this looks familiar to anyone, I'd appreciate some helpful tips. I'm still a novice, but can muddle my way around the server if given enough guidance. Here is the email I've been getting:

"IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
This is cPanel stats runner on host.myserverhost.com!
While processing the log files for user xxxxxxx, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is
19:20:10 up 2 days, 7:06, 0 users, load average: 15.17, 13.24, 8.00
You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes)."

I guess my question is, how would I go about determining what is causing the excess load? Seems to happen even when not many folks are on my site.

Dedicated Server Overload ... Low Page Views

Jun 9, 2008

I'm on a low-end dedicated server that I run 2 decent sized blogs on. I'm getting several traffic spikes a day where the load goes through the roof and I think I need my server optimized.

My server admin says I need a bigger server and he has never steered me wrong but this is ridiculous:

My blogs use Wordpress as its blogging platform....I know they hog server resources and I've recently installed Super cache so that seems to help.

I average about 5,000 pageviews a day and I would think even a low-end box should handle this but maybe I am wrong.

Here's the server specs:

Setup- Multiple Servers Or 1 Powerful One

Sep 21, 2007

some setup recommendations as I feel I have outgrown my current server.

I have two websites:

#1 is a busy vBulletin based forum with 42,000 members.

#2 is a website with Wordpress and Vbulletin installed (though the forum is nowhere near as busy as the first site) and gets roughly 2000 uniques a day.

When site #2 gets a good surge of visitors from offline media or a large site, site #1 will die first with the "mysql error: too many connections" error and site #2 will take a very very long time to load.

For every other day, the load is quite low, nearly always under 1.50.

The current server that both sites reside on has the following specs:

Quote:

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 15
model : 2
model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz
stepping : 9
cpu MHz : 2667.540
cache size : 512 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 2
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe cid xtpr
bogomips : 5339.18

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 1003 484 519 0 3 192
-/+ buffers/cache: 288 715
Swap: 2047 25 2022

What sort of setup would be best for me?

A files server and a sql server?

A server for site #1 and another for site #2?

A single, more powerful server?

Or something else you recommend?

Also, for the setup you do recommend, can you recommend a hosting company that is reliable and can do it for a good price?

Premium Hosts With High-End Powerful Shared Hosting

Oct 7, 2008

Im a webdesigner so when looking for hosting i try to find one that is simple to manage, hardware powerful, lots of ready to install scripts and a beautiful webmail like Atmail or Zimbra.

So im looking for a powerful / quality high end "shared" hosting package.

Until now i have looked at:
- Mediatemple
(as @mail, exelent support but slow in Europe)

- Mosso
(is always good to be powered by rackspace but i think that the cloud hosting concept is still unsstable. Any experience?

- SimpleHelix (realy fast magento demo store, lots of scripts, @Mail and seems to have a fast network to europe)

So any advices on premium shared hosting?

An in Europe, any company similar to mediatemple or simplehelix?

Would it be a big difference if I upgrade to 3GB? Like will it support more downloads at once without boggind down the server? Which stuff should I tweak in apache and mysql config to make use of extra gig of ram?

Windows VPS With Extra RAM

I'm looking for a VPS running Windows Server (preferably 2008, but 2003 is also OK) with 4GB of RAM. Disk space, provided it's at least 50GB, and bandwidth, provided it's at least 100GB/month, aren't really that important.

I've been scouring WHT and Google for something that will meet my needs but have not yet been successful. Does anyone know where I can find such a VPS? Or is there nothing out there and should I concentrate on fully dedicated products?

Extra Bandwidth

Oct 17, 2007

i was ddos'ed heavily two months ago and my host decided to invest in some ips hardware. even after installation, the targeted ip still had to be null-routed. because of the ddos, i was told the incoming bandwidth was going over my commit (500mbit?) and I had to increase my commit from 100 to 200mbit.

the attacks are over now, but i am stuck with paying for the commit. i am still under contract and i cannot exactly move 22U's of machines easily. i don't know how to proceed. I do not really want to sublease my cabinet out, but i also do not want to pay the extra costs for something that i am not using. I do not mind paying a one-time payment for the bandwidth cost during the attacks, but .. oh well.

has anyone ever subleased their cabinet? what kind of terms should i be offering and watching out for?
