Who Hosts This Domain Name- How Do I Check

Jul 3, 2007

I have a client that is unable to connect to his FTP and control panel, and he does not know which web hosting company hosts his web site since he never gets billed for it. I tried looking up the WHOIS to type in the NS1/NS2 web address to see which web hosting company the site points to, but had no luck.

This is the domain:

One Domain For Two Hosts

Oct 16, 2007

My registrar has ten slots for DNS name servers. What I wonder about is if I could fill the slots with name severs of two different hosts. And if so what would happen.
Would I get my traffic split equally between the two sites? Or would all of the name requests go to #1 slot and only check deeper upon failure?

And I also wonder if this would result in an ip war between the name servers with one set constantly broadcasting their ip to other name servers, and the other set broadcasting their own ips.

I don't really have any reason for wondering about this. Just a matter of curiosity.

Reversable Domain/DNS Problems In E-mail Genuinity Check

Jul 25, 2009

Title: Reversable Domain/DNS Problems in E-mail Genuinity Check

Tags: DNS, firewall, internet protocol, routing, email

This is a real world scenario that I need help figuring out. I have thought of everything I could, but now I must seek the privileging knowledge and help from WebhostingTalk Forumers.

This is a real world scenario -- how so? Well know that Microsoft's TechNet newsletter probably goes out to at least a million people. How many of those e-mails go out to yahoo.com? Gmail.com? Hotmail.com? AOL.com? Etcetera. This is the same scenario that my company is in, except with a little bit of a kicker that has caused me to seek help.

In this scenario we have at least 10,000 clients with an e-mail at company-b.com. We need to send all of our clients an important e-mail with confidential information. We have one physical server and it is located in a ventilated and cooled datacenter'ish room. We also have two internet service providers for connection redundancy. On our firewall, we have it set so that if our primary ISP goes down it will instantly switch over to our secondary ISP until our primary ISP is back online. The IP address our primary ISP gives us on the internet is 48.48.48.48, and our secondary ISP gives us 68.68.68.68.

[url]

Company-b.com, for the protection of their customers, will resolve the reverse DNS from the address an e-mail would come from to make sure that the IP addresses match. In other words, when you send an e-mail from company-a.com it will come out from mail.company-a.com (with an IP address of 48.48.48.48 for example). When the mail gets to company-b.com, that server will resolve the reverse DNS (or try to anyway) of mail.company-a.com to make sure that it is indeed coming from 48.48.48.48. If it resolves it to a different IP address, it will not deliver the e-mails you sent from company-a.com to its customers on company-b.com.

In general, this verification process tries to verify the genuinity and validity from where e-mail was sent from to its own customers. If mail.company-a.com resolves to a different IP address than what it came from, then it is possible to say that we (or company-a.com) are using a relay (which is like a proxy), or that our domain name is simply not reversable.

[url]

To summarize: mail is sent out through 48.48.48.48 (but then goes offline coincidentally) and is sent to 96.96.96.96. Because 48.48.48.48 is down, mail.server-a.com will resolve to 68.68.68.68 instead of the original IP address we sent out our mail from, and because the IP addresses differ, the server 96.96.96.96 rejects the mail we sent, thinking that we either (1) have a DNS problem, (2) are spammers/spam-bombers, or (3) using a relay or proxy, which many companies are against, do not support, and have counter-measures against relay/proxy-users.

[url]

Any and all help will be appreciated. We are looking for a workable, proper/appropriate solution so that we can successfully pass the reverse domain test. We can add/modify DNS/MX records to company-a.com. We must have the two ISPs we have for redundancy; our company and clients heavily depend on our internet connection's uptime. Also, a lot of people in the company depend on IMAP/POP3/SMTP with their cell phones, iPhones, PDAs, laptops, timecards, etcetera. We may be able to schedule something maintenaince for a weekend if necessary.

Running 1 Domain Off 2 Hosts

Jun 14, 2008

I own a number of different websites, and recently have been having a couple of problems regarding uptime...

My question is...

Is there anyway of setting up a fail-safe page? So that when 1 server isn't found, it redirects to another DNS?

I would have thought you could just add a second set of DNS servers like so..

NS1:- NS1.MYFIRSTHOST.COM
NS2:- NS2.MYFIRSTHOST.COM
NS3:- NS1.MYSECONDHOST.COM
NS4:- NS2.MYSECONDHOST.COM

But I'm not sure whether this will work?

All I am asking for, is a way to direct ALL my traffic to my main server... But when/if the first hosting goes down, I would like the domain to point to my second host...

I have heard of a way to do this with a third party DNS service... but the one's i have found are all pay services..

What Domain Name Server (DNS) Changes To Make When Moving Hosts?

Mar 10, 2008

I have example.com as a reseller account hosted on a shared server. I have ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com on that server and client domains use these nameservers.

I want to move to a VPS for more control and so I have acquired vps.example.com. This also has vps_ns1.example.com and vps_ns2.example.com with it.

Can I move everything to the VPS? Assuming that I move the files over, if I simply changed the DNS of example.com to point to nameservers vps_ns1(and 2).example.com, what would happen?

Have I made it over complicated for me to understand, and it's actually a lot easier than I think? Or have I shot myself in the foot by using vps.example.com as the name for the VPS?

I am using cPanel/WHM for both servers.

Do Any Good Hosts Provide A CPanel That Keeps Addon Domain Lists In Order

Feb 2, 2008

I find that I like using CPanel with addon domains in a new unlimited domains shared plan rather than using WHM with each name having its own CPanel in a reseller plan (which I have been used to until now at another host). The only problem is that all the addon domains are out of order - they are not even in the order in which I add them. This puts a damper on things and makes managing them much less efficient than one would expect with the addons in order.

After putting in a support ticket, I was told they can't do anything about it at all. They told me the order of the listing is the order in the "mail server apache configuration."

After posting this matter here in the Apache forum, I have been informed by an SP member that the answer I got wouldn't hold any water at all, or more accurately, consists of a whole lot of smoke. As a person who knows how easy and basic it is to sort data lists or drop-down form selector fields myself, I must admit that it's hard to believe nothing can be done in the 21st century.

I have no desire at all to go with another reseller plan, and like using CPanel instead with addons.

Does anyone know of the good and well known unlimited domain hosting providers who keep the addon domains in order within CPanel? Is there any other good option for shared hosting that doesn't involve using WHM and does offer common sense multiple domain management where everything is in order?

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Directadmin Hosts Or Cpanel Hosts

Aug 16, 2008

Recently I stumbled along a host on here with a good rep and that uses direct admin.

Because they were very nice on the live support I signed up to see what direct admin was like.

Its very diferent from cpanel. Some parts seem to be harder to use like the phpmyadmin requires the username and password to the database you created not the control panel username and password like cpanel. Although I guess that could be a good security feature just in case some one gets into the control panel they can not get into the phpmyadmin, then again if they are smart and were able to get into the control panel they could get into ftp and look what the username and password is on the config file for the script you are using.

The bandwidth meter seems to be better in direct admin although I think its acting up for me as its putting yesterdays bandwidth on todays. I was told by the host that it updates every 2 hours and at first it did but now its gone to every day. Oh and unlike cpanel this bandwidth meter includes bandwith used by the control panel.

Niether one from what I can tell counts sftp though at least for the hosts I have right now.

CSF Security Check

Apr 20, 2009

I'm running CSF on a Cpanel server and have questions about new features in CSF

Apache Check

Check Apache weak SSL/TLS Ciphers (SSLCipherSuite)

Results

Cipher list []. Due to weaknesses in the SSLv2 cipher you should disable SSLv2 in WHM > Apache Configuration > Global Configuration > SSLCipherSuite > Add -SSLv2 to SSLCipherSuite and/or remove +SSLv2. Do not forget to Save AND then Rebuild Configuration and Restart Apache, otherwise the changes will not take effect in httpd.conf

Can someone explain this in laymen terms? I know this is new in Cpanel. I'm already running Apache 2.2, PHP 5.2.9 with suPHP enabled and mod_security as well (these rules: [url]

Also, what exactly are these CSF checks?

Check csf PT_SKIP_HTTP option
This option disables checking of processes running under apache and can limit false-positives but may then miss running exploits

Check csf SAFECHAINUPDATE option
This option closes a window of opportunity that opens when dynamic chain updates occur
