Reliable Way Of Comparing Provider's Speed
Oct 27, 2009What's a reliable method of comparing the network speed between two providers? They often put up a 50MB or 100MB file to download, but I'm not certain how to go about testing their bandwidth.
I can't just download the file from my home connection -- my link is probably capped at 10 Mbps. Is there an external service that I can use?

Aug 14, 2008I found out about downtownhost on here and signed up and am currently using them for one of my websites which is working out great. But I'm looking for another one as well (I don't like to host all my sites with one company).
I looked at iweb but there own site was loading slowly for me so that was discouraging.
Chatted with hostmysite and they made me wait forever and couldn't answer simple questions so that was scary. I currently have 2 sites already with hostgator which has worked out well, but like I said don't want to put all my sites on one host. Looking to get my sites off of dreamhost which I recently (last 6 months) have been having website loading time problems. My sites load SLOW So my once "dream" provider has turned into a nightmare. I also host with lunarpages (oy vey) my site goes down weekly and they don't have phone support on weekends.

Securing A VPS Node Versus A Dedicated Server
May 29, 2009I have a lot of experience with VPSs and recently have been working with dedicated servers but my partner and I are going to be providing VPSs and my main concern is securing the node the VPSs will be on. Would I secure it like a normal dedicated server?
I'm worried that if I secured it like I would my dedicated servers it would affect the VPS clients hosted on there. Any assistance is appreciated, even if it's just a recommendation for a management company or single user who could assist us.

Sep 4, 2008I have the idea to consolidate about 10 hosting accounts (1and1, dreamhost, etc), into one dedicated/managed server.
I was wondering what recommendations from reliable providers can i get, for about 99/m.
The accounts are very low profile, i mean, about 500 users at most for all accoutns (about 50 users per account).
The first option at 1and1 feels about right, [url] but i was wondering if there is something better.
And by better, i mean more reliable, better support, more "care for the customer".
i also thought about VPS, but checking the price differences, at least in 1and1, it doesn't makes much sense.

Apr 11, 2015We have one Cloud Server hardware node that exists only as the backup location for containers and VMs in Cloud Server/PVA (it hosts no virtual servers). Can it also serve as a Backup Server Node?
A related question, in my case, is whether we can configure a Backup Server Node to use a particular drive/mount/directory, as we can with PVA? I couldn't find any info in the docs about any settings at all for the Backup Server Node.

We have a server with thevpsguy.com which has been down since last Monday! I have only received very limited support from Ian the owner and now I am beginning to give up hope on him sorting anything out because he ignores all my emails and makes false promises.
Who are the best dedicated server providers?
I want someone with good support, but I still like the personal touch so not huge companies.
New Netherlands Dedicated Hosting Provider
May 14, 2009We've been reading this site for awhile a colleague, who is a member, suggested we post a request here. We are looking for a NETHERLANDS-based dedicated server hosting company (which, obviously means a Netherlands datacenter) for our single dedicated server. We're not interested in hosting companies based in other countries but offering NL servers; just those that are NL based.
Our business is perfectly legal (as explained below) and we have neither the time nor inclination to debate the merits of our needs and would appreciate respect for that position (as we have read some of the reactions to such requests by US members for non-US servers and many have been less than respectful).
That said, here are three NL providers we're NOT interested in:
Leaseweb. That is based largely on a recent post in which they indicated they shut down servers with little notice if they get even one, even unsubstantiated, complaint about a TOS violation but also because we've read nightmare stories about how they treat small businesses and individual customers. Apparently, they've become too big for small accounts and our business server is as mission-critical to us as their big business clients. We need a provider that respects small business.
Server Boost. We have a VPS with them (we won't say under which domain name or IP address) but are still trying to work out the kinks in that rather new relationship so won't use them for our dedi at this time. That VPS will be the slave to our dedi.
i3D.net. They are our current dedi provider with whom we have a Rackserver but it isn't working out for a variety of reasons, the most important being we have no remote access control panel or power management. Right now, we are required to pay for OS reinstalls and just about anything else we need that's not a simple reboot. We don't necessarily believe they are a bad provider and don't want to malign them but our experience with them makes us disinclined to upgrade to a Dell server (and we are "anti-Dell" because of our personal experiences with Dell, anyway). We don't believe most customers feel this way about since their offerings are certainly suitable for most needs.
Therefore, we're looking for different alternatives from Leaseweb, i3D and Server Boost that are reputable, provide high-quality servers and solid, English-speaking, tech support at a reasonable monthly price. (We liked, for example, what OVH was offering but their NL site is in Dutch, only, and we don't want a UK server.)
What we now have:

* TOS/Privacy Policies/Legal Policies available in English without the "Dutch only" terms valid caveat
* Server/order details available in English

We will host several websites and blogs that are business-oriented and targeted to them, C-suite decision-makers who contract for our services and their audiences.
Our sites will contain NO adult content (legal or otherwise, whether it's called porn, erotica, or whatever), warez, torrents, copyrighted material for which we don't have permission to post/use, or overtly controversial materials like anti-government, hate speech, etc. We won't be spamming, phishing or doing IRC. May 27, 2008Can you reccomend - based on your experience - some dedicated hosting provider with a solid freebsd experience ? By "solid" I mean they will be able to provide a decent freebsd installation (especially if a control panel is requested) on tested hardware, rather than setup their standard server, put on it a freebsd7 iso, do a very poor setup then discover something like the raid card does not work as expekted, scratch their head, embarass themselves proposing centos as an alternative, and similar ridiculous behaviour ...
