Web Hosting Domain
I just got hosting with a company called Netfirms (netfirms.com), and I gave it my domain name(destinyislands.com) that I purchased from godaddy. However, destinyislands.com will not redirect to the actual pages that I have uploaded to netfirms. The only page that will work is destinyislands.netfirms.com(a crappy subdomain). I just signed up about 30 minutes ago, so maybe I need to wait for the domain to register into the system, but I feel like I got ripped off. Anybody have any idea of if I just need to wait, and then the regular domain will work?

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, And Yahoo Web Hosting?
I am trying to pick a hoster, but I would like some help please. The site I am making is going to be a personal site, with a photo gallery, which will start out with about 500-1000 photos and will grow anywhere from 10-a few hundred a month. I also plan on having a small blog. The hosters I am currently looking at are: Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, and Yahoo Web Hosting. Which provider out of these do you think would be the best? Also are there any other providers you recommend.

Domain Not Working Via Web
The domain is not showing up via web, but works via ftp oddly. I deleted / re-added the dns zone and it still shows up "no record found" in dnsreport.com I found the dns line in var cpanel user file commented out, uncommented it and made it dns= (instead of dns=1). I ran updateuserdomains, restarted cpanel and dns zone still does not show up in dnsreport, nor the web working The httpd.conf virtual portion matches fine with the dns zone as well. Now after uncommenting the dns line in the user file, it shows up in whm but still does not work via web. I confirmed these are correct / listed: userdomains (no, I added it, ran updateuserdomains, it disappeared from that file) /var/cpanel/users/userfile (correct dns=, etc) httpd.conf (correct) sync'd zone to all clustered servers (ok) ran updateuserdomains numerous times restarted cpanel listed in /var/named/domain.com.db localdomains (ok)

Different E-mail/Web Server But Same Domain Name
I was wondering if someone might be able to help me out. I've been trying to get this figured out for the past week and have not had any success. Here is my problem, I have one domain name, I have the Web services provided on one server, and I need my e-mail provided on a different server for the same domain. I can't seem to figure out how to get my e-mail set up that is on a different server. I really need to get my e-mail going because it's very important. I think this has something to do with updating the MX records and some other stuff but I have no idea how to do it through my registrars control panel that they have. I registered it through Go Daddy.

Clarification Regarding Web Host, Domain Name
I had just sat down to click on the "buy now" button of a web host service provider when I just had a few more doubts. I am faced with a few queries like the domain name I need to buy. At the moment, I have not made a proper site for anyone. I am experimenting with a few example sites only. One of my good friends, who is a cricket coach told me that he needs to modify his site. He told me that I can use his site to experiment and learn. So I am now trying to make a site using his images, header etc but with a few modifications. His site contains a home page, a contact page, an image gallery and also a registration page where he wants the students to give their details like name, age, school and submit the details. Now, I have just managed to have a home page, a contact page and a plain gallery page with a few images. I also made a registration page where the student can submit the details. But I have not been able to test the form on my page to see if it works. Now this is what I want. I do not have a site of my own now. But I need to have a web host who will give me php support so that I can test whatever page I make. When I am satisfied that I can venture out and make a website for somebody, I intend to start offering my services to my friends (for a nominal fee or even for free if it is going to help me to learn. I do not want to take money for a sloppy site or take my friends for a ride. I want to be able to offer quality service for whatever I charge). My question now is this. When I need to register for a domain name, is it a good idea to just have a domain name like www.jppp.com ( if it is available or a similar name). Then can I try out the various pages that I make on this site? Once I get my domain name, I need to download a ftp client in order to upload my files, isn't it? Once I am a little confident and offer my services to a client, I make a site on my PC with all the files required. Then do I upload the files to my own domain name to show it to the client for his approval? Or should I have a domain name of my client's choice and then upload it there before making any changes that he wants? One more question. In my gallery page, I have a few thumbnail images which shows a larger version on hover. Now I can upload the pages which my friend has provided me. But my friend will have many images which he needs to be able to upload himself instead of having to depend on me? I know that I need to use PHP for this. But I do not know the exact method. Can I be shown the way or directed to a tutorial? Will I have to let my client know that the size of the images should not exceed a certain limit? Being a layman, he will not know how to resize images which I can easly do in photoshop, isn't it? What if his images are too many and exceed the amount of webspace that I have?

Looking For Web Hosting For A Web Game
First I would like to start by explaining my past and current situation. When I was in High School I created a web game called Jinopets.com that was intended for me to learn how to Code PHP and to create things with a couple of friends. However, within 3 days the game exploded and receiving large amounts of hits and users by nothing but word of mouth. Before I knew what to do, my host said the price of my next month was going to go up from $5 to $50, and at the time I knew nothing about web hosting and was making (barely) enough money from Google Ad-sense so I gladly paid them to continue working on the game. As the site got larger, the host continued to ask for large amounts of money until I could no longer afford the game because the host was kicking me off of his hosting because I was simply taking up too much of his space. (I was going to link my daily usage data here, but apparently I have to post 5 times first to add links.) Now, there is more. I am NOT hosting the same game, but I am expecting similar numbers just increased a bit higher with a few differences. This game extensively uses PHP GD Image Functions to generate images for characters and map data. So I expect the server load to be much higher. But PHP GD Image Functions must be on the server, Which I do not anticipate to be a problem. What is the recommended solution for web hosting? I live in a fairly remote area and could not host my own server, but I am afraid of being removed from a hosting plan again after what happened last time.

Unknown Company "Easy Web Hosting" Taking Over My Web Sites
I just received two e-mails which may be some new kind of phishing scam. Full text at bottom. The message describes the beginnings of a "site upgrade" for my web sites, but it's not from the company that does my hosting. I received this for two sites that I have hosted with EZpublishing. I'm having terrible problems with EZpublishing; they lost most of my databases last Friday, have failed to respond to a trouble ticket, and phone calls divert to an answering service. I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They may be going out of business and selling their remaining customers to another provider. So a message regarding migration to another host isn't unexpected. But the message below looks phony. First, they know what my domains are, but they don't apparently have access to any of my customer account information. Second, "easywebpublishing.com" doesn't have a live web site at it, just a sort of "coming soon" page. The WHOIS info for the domain shows ownership by "Internet Names for Business". "megawebservers.com", from which the email originated, is sort of a skeletal web site that looks like a hosting provider, but doesn't have any real info. "megawebhosting.com" WHOIS info shows "Moniker Privacy Services", which usually indicates a bottom-feeder if not a scam. Anyone else see anything like this? .....

Which Hosting Is The Best For Web 3.5?
We run a few websites (mainly online travel guides with a lot of php/sql), which receive about 100 gb of traffic every month about > 1 mln hits. Currently we're finishing developing updates, which will allow visitors create content, make search through large massives of data, etc. etc. – all the usual web 2(3) stuff. Our current servers will not cope. Can you recommend what web hosting would be the most suitable solution? We would like a location in the US (as most of our readers are from there), even though the company itself is located in UK. Also, we don't have our own webmaster, so it would be great if the hosting provider can install some basic stuff of the server (like PHP, Perl, mySQL, admin panels, etc.) – for no extra charge. Also, we currently have two hosting providers, so it would be great if they can help us move at no or little charge. I'm choosing between RackSpace and LiquidWeb... Any comments about these? Any other recommendations? Also, do we need Dedicated Server or Colocation or Managed? I'm just a bit lost in terminology.

Which Type Of Web Hosting
I need to switch two corporate web sites from a provider which has been providing spotty up time and poor reliability especially on their email servers; worst thing about them is that when they're down we get no notice, until we notice or customers complain. We've had outages for email that lasted as long as 72 hours. I'm not sure how our service is configured there, but I would guess shared hosting. I understand the differences in shared hosting, virtual private or dedicated server, and dedicated hosting unmanaged or managed. What I'm not sure about is what would be best for our needs. If I dont get other advice, I'll probably sign up for shared hosting with a provider that has other service types available. We do not do any E-commerce, but our website is our advertising and if we're down we can lose sales. Our customers need access to documentation downloads and get upset if we're down. Our current site has shown these statistics on average per day: 3000-4000 hits, 3000-4000 files 200 visits. Our monthly bandwidth was a maximum of 2GB over the past year. We need less than 50 email addresses. Phone support is necessary, 24/7 would be nice. We need server monitoring and security, good uptime and reliability statistics or a guarantee. Control panel and statistics would be nice. We dont need any website design tools. I've used Futurequest for a website in the past but their geared to E-Commerce and have no phone support. I have some websites registered with Dotster but they're very light on support. A colleague has used Lunarpages for similar businesses, I think, and he recommended them. He indicated they were good for him with phone support. If you're still reading, I'd appreciate any guidance, both for type of service and for specific providers.

Fundamentals Of Web Hosting
I have a friend who is interested in learning about the fundamentals of Web hosting. Like most of the regulars here, I have a pretty solid knowledge base in the industry, but I'm not really sure what the best strategy is to teach someone the basics of hosting from a technology standpoint. So, I'm starting a thread to see if anyone has any thoughts about this 1a. If someone asked you what to learn first about the industry, what would you tell them? 1b. Would you be willing to lay down some knowledge in this thread (or a separate tutorial)? 2. Can anyone recommend any books about the subject? There are tons of them, but if they're anything like Web design books, there are 20 crappy ones for every 1 good book. So recommendations are most welcome! This isn't about the business side of things. No one is trying to start a new business or get into the hosting industry as a business. This is strictly academic - the nuts and bolts of Web hosting technology. So, Web hosting 101 - where should we begin?

But, especially now, emails generated by my application and sent to Yahoo are delayed by several days--apparently Yahoo is restricting the number of messages from IX servers? My app only generates a dozen or so emails. So ... 1) Is there a workaround with IX? 2) If I switch, should get a dedicated server? Or maybe use the cloud? I have been looking at rackspace, although I haven't received a call-back from their sales team in four days (sic) 3) Other options?

Unlimited Web Hosting, What's Next
the industry is back to where it was about 8 years ago, when only a few companies offering unlimited were labeled as "scam". Now 8 years down the road, most of the large companies offering unlimited everything, but everyone is ok with it. What is next? How will the competition go on? Examples: Unlimited + Free 2nd Unlimited account. Unlimited + Unlimited = Unlimited!! Unlimited + FREE CASH! How low can these companies go? How will they keep up the competition since there is no more disk space or bandwidth left to compete on. Maybe start free hosting? Start giving out cash to sign up? If you look at one of those Top 10 hosting web sites, you will see all the companies listed now offer unlimited everything, just different pricing structure. Since they all offer the same thing, wouldn't the person looking just click on the lowest price? Since most people aren't aware of overselling or the unlimited truth, they see it as something that they will never run out of. Average consumer is not aware of these marketing gimmicks. Honestly if my cell phone provider was offering unlimited minutes for $45 per month, and another one was offering $100 for 1000 minutes my choice would be unlimited. I would even put up with a little bit of crap from the support for $45 unlimited talk time, and a few service outages.

Some Basic Web Hosting
I've noticed that theres really a shortage of freebsd web hosts which surprised me at first because I've always considered fbsd an os built from the ground up to be a server. That also happens to be the os I have the most experience with. I can only guess its because in comparison to the linux community the freebsd is relatively small and not as well known. So basically what I'd like to do is rent a dedicated server, run freebsd 64 on it, and hopefully get a small successful business going. I've been looking around a lot for reliable freebsd servers (I really don't have the upfront money to do colocation) and I've found one that offers me 500gb disk space and 10mbps unmetered bandwidth (or 3300 gb/month I guess). My first question is could someone please clarify unmetered bandwidth. In the past pretty much every host I've looked at offers a set amount of bandwidth (like in gb), and I'm not completely clear on how this whole 10mbps fits in with that. My second question is more general. Really I'm looking for honest opinions on the ease of breaking into this business. I'm sure theres a lot of people who start up and shut down constantly which contributes to the reputation of a lot of smaller hosts being unreliable, but is this a feasible goal? I can really put in any amount of time necessary but I only have about $500 to start out.
