VPS For Europe Based Site
Aug 20, 2007
I'm finishing a simple community site and now it's time to find a good host.
I'm not an expert in VPS so don't kill me if I write something stupid.
So, I need:
10 GB space
256 RAM (guaranteed)
150-200 GB bandwidth (or more!)
All for $20
Also, the site is for European folks only (language is not English, for now)
so I guess a EU based host would be a better solution then US.
I also need Apache, MySQL and PHP Will that be installed?

I have always had a US based shared hosting service for my sites, but I'm about to move to a VPS and am not sure where to shop.
My unique visitor stats per continent, for my main site, for the last month, are:
Europe 24,889
Americas 16,002
Asia 1,446
Oceania 609
Africa 208
Is a Europe based VPS a no-brainer with these stats? Does it really make a difference?

I recently put up a website and after about a week, I suddenly can not access it. The site went down after the host had a problem with the http on the server and it never came back for me but it works for everyone else. It times out while trying to connect in both the web browser and FTP client. The problem appears to be related to my internet connection, because the site won't load on any computer that is using my internet. When I disconnect from my cable and use my cellphone as a modem, the site works fine. The site works for everyone else that has tried though.
Besides changing my IP address, how do I go about getting the site to work?

I am currently facing a move from my existing web host, as they are altogether incompetent. Four of the last five days, my site has either been down, showing a suspended page, or redirecting to the main page of the host. (I am a legitimate business - not selling penis enlargement supplements)
So now, I need a good host, who will provide maximum value for dollar spent. My requirements are fairly simple. I need 5 SQL databases, the ability to install and configure a CMS of my choosing, and a site that is based in the US. (I need my site to be US based and listed, for very specific reasons)
I have used Rochen in the past, and am very happy with them. However, I want my sites on a different host, as several of my other sites are cross linked.
Finding services in such a competitive field is overwhelming. It's getting too hard to cut through the BS.

Today, I've purchased a RapidSSL Certificate for my site with Cpanel and https:// access did not work.
What I did was :-
1) Generate a Private Key
2) Create a CSR Request Certificate
3) Submit that and installed the Certificate in WHM for the site.
The site is running on a dedicated IP and it works as http:// but not with the https:// .
I checked and Cpanel did include the SSL directive for the site in httpd.conf and have rebooted the server and restarted httpd but to no avail.
I also had OpenSSL 0.9.8.3a installed and update WHM. The Apache 1.x was installed with OpenSSL Support too.
Is there a SSL Server or something which may not be active ?

my friend and i are working on some web-based-commerce ideas and at current we're at godaddy.com. i can only imagine the vitriol they've rightfully earned here, as we decided to be done with them when the $30 SSL license they told us we could get one night quickly became $78 because there was a new "turboSSL server" package we needed, nevermind the guy the first time said with our hosting options we only needed to go through them for the SSL license, so basically, either the first guy lied to us or the second guy tried to hustle us, either way, i dont like companies whose sales model is revealed like the plot in a horror movie, so we're looking to go elsewhere.
basically we're looking for a virtual private server setup, although actually another question i'd love to ask someone is if joomla is better served on unix/linux or windows, with a few dozen accounts needed, and by accounts i mean domains and whatnot, as right now it's basically the blanket idea that you grab the names you need, or might go to if you change your mind on company names...
so basically, with all the people here talking about bad experiences with places, are there any good experience type places where someone can get competent tech support, no hustling in sales pitches, and quality service at a nice solid price?
again, sorry to show up and start asking for things, but i'm not necessarily well versed in these arts yet... rest assured once i have some information i shall contribute to the community and help others who are in my position now

I have a task of converting a current Win Server based apache server from multiple IP based virtual hosts to a full name based virtual hosting.I'm famiilar with the steps but I was wondering if there are any gotchas in Windows that I should be aware of. It seems that now matter what I change in the new config it doesn't work or work as expected.

I will have to deploy a site into VPS (or dedicated or amazon EC2, I don't really know yet, but I thik it could be VPS).
First of all I don't know how strong server do I need. It's rails application with 800k (up to 1million) pageviews per month. Could you tell me how much traffic do you have on your VPSes? It's rails app, so I think I will need RAM at first place.
The other requirements are:
* Server in Europe
* Stability
* Good support
* Root access

recommendations for colocation in Europe, preferably NL or DE based?
Basic requirement:
1-5U initially, option to expand into half and full rack over time.
Reasonably priced bandwidth.
Decent remote hands when needed.
A sensible AUP would also be a requirement. I prefer a host to give you an opportunity to address any issues (such as a compromised system, copyright protected content, or similar) *before* they actually pull the plug. From what I have seen, some hosts will disable your switch port(s) almost the moment they receive a complaint - which is not acceptable.

A friend has asked me to recommend a company for a Managed VPS solution, one that must be in hosted in Europe (I suggested that he might want to look to the USA but he doesn't want to). As I really don't know too much about European VPS solutions as I mainly deal with US datacenters and companies I wanted to ask for a recommendation.
He requires a managed linux VPS solution, with a control panel that can manage files, email, databases etc, so whether its directadmin, cPanel, Plesk or whatever, it doesn't really matter.
He is looking for the following specs:
20-30GB HDD
128 or more RAM
Bandwidth doesn't particularly matter as long as its not too low.
The budget is £20 or under (around $40) per month, so he's obviously looking at quite a low-end solution.

I'm currently using 1&1 Germany. Great service, but only in German and Google translator is getting to some funny translations. I've looked at 1&1 UK, but their prices are higher for slower servers with less RAM.
I don't want a server in the US.
I'd like Window 2003, or preferably 2008 with Hyper-V installed.

Im gonna run Zimbra webmail on a server, i dont really care where i host it (and i dont think a VPS will do for it), as long as its not in USA (slow for me as i live in Sweden).
Where should i host it?
Checked Leaseweb and they want 29 euro/month for a dedicated server with 512mb ram, CPU dosnt really matter as long as its atleast the same as leaseweb (sempron 3100+).
Is there any as cheap, or cheaper than that? I found many in .uk and .nl, xeneurope (only VPS?), etc..
I find 29euro/month + a domain VERY cheap..

So I need servers in Europe and more speed with VPS and not shared hosting.
I have seen the rackspace.co.uk with 80 ms tracert from Greece but the prices is out of question, something like that more cheaper?

Attached is a (badly) drawn diagram of two sites, connected by a vpn.
The site to the left, is network 10.0.0.0/24 which runs a linux server as the router for the network.
The site to the right, is network 10.1.0.0/24 which runs a windows 2003 server as the router for the network.
Now, my problem is, the clients behind the windows 2003 server can ping any machine on the first network because i setup a static route to route all traffic to 10.0.0.0/24 over the vpn interface.
now, my problem is, only the linux server can ping any machine on the windows 2003 network, any client behind the linux server cant seem to route over the interface.
I have the following route on the linux server: .....

Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.
The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.
The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.
Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]
After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.
However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.
If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.
Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.

I did do a search of the forum and it showed a few results, mostly non UK and some which were no longer online.
Now I'll make my own topic doh.
What I am looking for is a host which allows UDP + TCP sockets(fsockopen) so I can query gameservers from my hosting + send other commands to other programs.
Must be located in the UK and be fast
Offering a reseller option is a plus, but not required.
