Unable To Handle Kernel NULL Pointer Dereference At Virtual Address

Jun 16, 2007

My server has been kernel panicking on and off irreguarly every 2 days or so since I upgraded to cPanel 11, I'm not entirely sure whether this was the cause however I've isolated the fact it is a kernel issue. I am running CentOS 4.5 and was running Kernel "2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp" however switched to the kernel I was running before (2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp) and the same issue is still cropping up.

I thought that it may be a memory addressing issue or the like, however from looking up the issue, several C programming forums seem to suggest dodgy applications, the memory usage on the server does always seem fairly low and loads are generally healthy so this would seem to be supported.

The logs before the server kernel panics are as so:

Unable To Handle SSL Request From Virtual IP

Oct 16, 2013

I have an apache 2.2 server that is having issues handling a SSL request from a Virtual IP. The Virtual IP sends all requests via SSL to a particular port for which I have and is listening. It looks like my apache server (17.16.3.7) is trying to use HTTP to talk to the HTTPS request coming in from the virtual IP address. The ssl_startup_log Error below is when I try do https request to my-virtual-ip-address.com I don't have any issues using [URL]...how to troubleshoot this?

ssl_startup_log Error:

Apache :: How To Use Virtual Host IP Address In Request To Remote Address

Feb 6, 2015

My customer has an external facing Apache server that is acting as a reverse proxy to two internal applications. They have:

- external addresses for each app which resolve to different ip addresses, so app1.their_domain.com and app2.their_domain.com resolve to 77.3.170.10 and 77.3.170.11 respectively.
- the Apache server has two network interfaces with ip addresses 192.168.10.10 and 192.168.10.11
- the external ip addresses resolve to the above internal addresses
- the firewall between the Apache server and the internal app servers is configured to allow traffic from 192.168.10.10 to reach app_server1, and traffic from 192.168.10.11 to reach app_server2, both using port 7777.

I have configured a virtual host in httpd.conf for each ip, i.e.

Code:

<VirtualHost 192.168.10.10:80>
...
ProxyPass /app http://app_server1:7777/app
ProxyPassReverse /app http://app_server1:7777/app
RewriteRule ^/$ /app/app1 [R,L]
...
<VirtualHost>

and

Code:

<VirtualHost 192.168.10.11:80>
...
ProxyPass /app http://app_server2:7777/app
ProxyPassReverse /app http://app_server2:7777/app
RewriteRule ^/$ /app/app2 [R,L]
...
<VirtualHost>

This works fine in that the external address are being routed to the correct application, however the firewall is blocking requests to the second app as it appears the requests are coming from the Apache servers 'primary' ip address 192.168.10.10 instead of 192.168.10.11.

Is it possible to send requests using the ip address from the relevant VirtualHost?

Virtual Private Server (VPS) To Handle Community Forum

Past shared hosting deals we been trying out sucks. We are a community forum that just started but know we will grow a big database in the future. We want to prepare now and have no problems. It's a LOCAL Radio-Control (R/C) forum.

What VPS Host would you guys recommend that handles forums well? So far, I broke down to WiredTree.com.

Linux Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) Vs Xen

Dec 12, 2008

I am currently researching the options open to me for Virtualisation, the two main ones I have seen are Xen or KVM.

I mainly use CentOS (RHEL), but have read that the version of Xen with it is very old, broken and unstable. KVM isn't included in the kernel that ships with CentOS, as it is too old, apparently it was first featured in Kernel v2.6.20. There isn't likely to be an update till RHEL6, which is due for release first quarter of 2010. I can't wait over a year, so need to find another Distro for use as the Host OS/Hypervisor.

I have built a pretty powerful server, it has an Intel Xeon 3230 which has VT - so I might be better off using KVM over Xen. I am going to collocate this server, so realistically I can make this decision only once - as it would be a PITA to re-install a host Linux distro remotely.

I did a search on distrowatch for distros with the latest version of the kernel, and Slackware came up as being just one minor version behind the most current (v2.6.27.7).

Now this distro is very mature, so should be a fairly safe bet, but it is a 32bit version and can't host 64bit VMs. I have 8GB of ram so want to be able to use it all, and offer the choice of 32/64bit VMs. So that's that out of the window.

I have used Arch Linux on and off for a couple of years as a workstation OS, but because it is so bleeding edge, when pacman updates it can break itself. But I suppose if I just use it as the Host OS, and never let it update/reboot, then it won't break. It should be fairly lightweight and stable, as I will be installing the bare minimum packages. I have a management card, so if the server fails to boot, then I can still remote in to fix it.

If I do want to update the kernel, is it possible to update without rebooting? I think it is somehow... unless I can just reboot during an unused time at 3am or something.

As you can tell I am leaning towards KVM on Arch Linux (x86_64). Is this a good plan?

Control Panels For KVM / Kernel Based Virtual Machine

Sep 24, 2008

I've started looking into KVM to possibly to run alongside or even to end up replacing our current Xen infrastructure. The fact that it's built into the mainstream linux kernel is very appealing.

Are there any Control panels/basic frontends for this at the moment to allow users to Reboot/Reimage their VM's? At the moment its looking as though we would need something inhouse or custom developed

DirectAdmin Domain Pointer

Jan 4, 2009

I've been trying to get some domains parked using DirectAdmin's domain pointers. I've searched for threads about this on Google, and followed the instructions. I go to Domain Pointers -> Add New Domain Pointer. I put the domain into the form field (leaving 'Create as Alias' checked) and click Add. I've waited for a few days to make sure there were no caching problems, and the domains still didn't resolve. The nameservers on my domain registrar are set correctly. I've parked domains before on CPanel and it worked just fine.

Difference Between A Cname Record And A Domain Pointer

Dec 17, 2006

I am seriously confused mainly because of the way it was explained in my training at work. Can someone please give me an explantion of the difference between creating a cname record and using a domain pointer? My understanding is that they both effectively do the same thing which is allow one ip address to be used for different domains.

Extra marks given for an easy to understand analogy as i'm definately a visual learner.

Apache :: Unable To Setup Subdomain And Virtual Host To Redirect To Port And Path

Mar 12, 2013

I am trying to setup a subdomain and/or virtual host to redirect to a specific port and path. I am, however, having great difficulties doing this.

I have setup my server with DDYNS through my domain name registar.

Through the ddyns client I have set it to assign a subdomain of "outside.name.com" so that my server will have a easy name to get to instead of a dynamic ip address.

I have also setup on my registrars host records another subdomain of "inside.name.com" with a static IP address for internet network accessing to my server.

My problem is that I have a service/program on my server that I need access to both internally and externally and this service can only be access through a port of 32400 and HTTP address of /web. (e.g. outside.name.com:32400/web or inside.name.com:32400/web)

This is annoying for others to type out and I am just wanting to make it look pretty. Is there a way that I can create a VirtualHost or Subdomain of "service.*.name.com" that redirects them to ":32400/web" of the hostname they're on? (e.g. service.outside.name.com automatically forwards or proxies--to keep it pretty--to service.outside.name.com:32400/web)

How To Null Route China?

Mar 16, 2008

I use geoip so that if ($country="CN") { die(); }

This works on my site. But for some reason I still get the occasional IP's through.

I looked at my Lighttpd server-status and I have 600 connections from 3 different IPs that come from China.

I typically use ./route add -host 222.221.81.3 reject as the way to block them, but it changes from time to time. The Chinese are using 90mbps of bandwidth and I want it to stop as they must be directly hotlinking my content.

How to null route large blocks from China? Please note I want to keep Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

PHP/DNS/Excessive Null Characters Error?

Apr 5, 2007

I'm having a problem that I've never run across before, and was wondering if anyone might have any ideas as to what may be causing this.

Basically, on 3 of 5 new servers on a brand new private rack from The Planet, we're having what we've narrowed down to be a problem with PHP or Apache. Loading any sort of PHP page with a larger output (even such as a simple 'phpinfo' call) results in, depending on the computer or browser in use:

- The page loading for a split second then reverting to a DNS Server Not Found page (observed in IE)
- The page loading, but filling the source code with vast amounts of extra blank spaces, making a simple phpinfo call download 5+mb of HTML (observed in both IE and Firefox)
- The page loading part way, then hanging (observed in Firefox)
- Occasionally the page will reload over and over again all by itself until it ultimately goes to a DNS error page (observed in IE)

Pages not including PHP, including very long .HTML and .SHTML pages, load just fine.

Here's a link to a page calling a simple phpinfo string, and nothing else (as this is my first post, I can't link directly to URLs, sorry):

We are trying to use a username for SMTP authentication as we do not have the option of using an email address with our current SMTP relay provider.

Is there any way around this so that we can use a username rather than an email address?

[kernel: Kernel BUG At Mm/rmap.c:479] Any Idea What This Is?

Mar 29, 2007

we have one box in hivelocity.net that has been down so many times this month that we were forced to remove links to siteuptime where we were once so proud of having a 99.7% uptime for 3 years in theplanet.

syslog shows that just before crashing, these entries were made:

kernel: kernel BUG at mm/rmap.c:479
kernel: invalid operand:0000 [#1]

dmesg also shows this:

...
Brought up 2 CPUs
zapping low mappings.
checking if image is initramfs... it is
Freeing initrd memory: 482k freed
NET: Registered protocol family 16
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xf9f20, last bus=1
PCI: Using configuration type 1
mtrr: v2.0 (20020519)
mtrr: your CPUs had inconsistent fixed MTRR settings
mtrr: probably your BIOS does not setup all CPUs.
mtrr: corrected configuration.
...

i've googled these messages and they point to ram problems.

hivelocity.net claims to have done diagnostics on the box and that there were no problems reported.

they said this is a result of a sys configuration problem made by us.

any ideas?

Centos + Kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2- How To Upgrade Kernel

Apr 29, 2007

Last year I ordered a new server with Centos 4.3 and it had the kernel kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2ELsmp installed. It runned fine and I didn't update any packages since then.

Today I started getting a problem where both mysqld and kswapd0 uses very high amounts of CPU, spiking up to 100% and my memory usage is at 99% all the time. The problem seems exactly the same as the one mentioned in this thread.

In that thread the exact same kernel is said to be insecure and to cause this problem. I also came across a centOS bug that reports this problem with high cpu, mem usage and mysql & kswapd0 consuming all resources.

In the linked thread the person solved the problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.9-42 using rpms but others recommended a newer kernel or a custom compiled kernel for CentOS.

Apparently when they used yum it said 34.0.2 was the latest kernel.

What should I do to upgrade the kernel, which version should i upgrade to, and where do I get it from? I won't be able to compile a custom kernel and I've only installed basic rpm packages before.

How Do I Setup A New Ip Address As My Server's Main Ip Address

Jul 26, 2007

I just bought a new ip address and want to setup this new ip as my server's main ip, making the 'existing main ip' as the secondary ip.

Which means, this new ip will be the server's default ip address for all services, including when connecting to other server.

I'm using CentOs 4.5 and swsoft's panels: HSPcomplete & Virtuozzo Power Panel, and Webmin.

Can A 256 MB VPS Handle My Traffic

Apr 1, 2008

I've only ever had a shared hosting account with Hostgator, plus a few freebie hosts. However, I'm now pulling some heavy traffic and I'm concerned that Hostgator is going to suspend me soon.

My traffic on Saturday for example was ~2600 unique visitors and ~5000 page views. All of this traffic was from WordPress blogs and a small SMF forum. I've since converted one of the blogs to a static site to limit my CPU usage and I've setup caching for my other WordPress blogs. Advice I've heard on the Hostgator forums is that 7000 page views per day for a database driven site is around the time you should be upgrading and based on my traffic from Saturday (which admittedly was a bit of a spike) I could potentially be receiving 150,000 page views/month, so about 20x the point at which they recommend upgrading at.

Anyhows, in a nutshell I need to upgrade, or risk Hostgator throwing a tantrum at me ... but I don't have a lot of cash to pay for an upgrade Due to my lack of cashflow I've been considering moving to a VPS. The company which has interested me the most is HostV.com who offer a 256 MB (with 1000 MB 'burst' RAM) for only US$39.99 which seems quite reasonable to me.

They say that their 256 MB plan should be able to handle over 5000 page views per day for a WordPress run site, but I'm a little suspect. Do any of you know if this is a reasonable expectation from a 256 MB chunk of a virtual server? I have no idea and am always wary of believing the sales pitch of a random company across the other side of the world.

That Can Handle This Script

Oct 20, 2007

PHPAuction GPL Enhanced V2.51 Auction Software seems to be the perfect solution for my client, but the PHP requirements are very specific and the host we currently are using doesn't allow anyone to play with .htacess which is the usual workaround. Can anyone recommend a host that they know has the following setup?

Minimal server requirements are as follows:
- Apache web server
- PHP 4.0.6 or later (see below) with safe_mode=Off - register_globals=on - no open_basedir restriction
- MySQL Database - 3.0 or higher
- "Cookies" MUST be enabled on your computer!

Alternatively, does anyone know of any auction software that restricts sellers to only the admin?

What Type Of Server To Handle

Mar 13, 2009

I have a client that asked me to educate myself about web hosting and make a recommendation to him about where he should be. He currently has a shared hosting server at Network Solutions and finds unexplained slow downs and disk corruption reports in his forums DB unacceptable.

I'm glad I found this site-lots of good info but nothing like throwing up some stats and seeing what people recommend. The client told me he wanted to move to a dedicated server but I'm thinking a VPS might do the trick. Especially if upgraded with dedicated Core as well as RAM such as wiredtree is offering.

Looking for a managed, Unix based server that in a typical month serves
100k unique visitors
230k page views
500Gb of downloads

But needs to be easily upgradeable to handle his expected traffic levels in the next year of monthly visits in the order of:
250k unique visitors
600k page views
1.1Tb of throughput
As far as features:

*Currently they use about 15 gigs of disk space. Some of that is inefficient disk management but the bulk is them supporting previous software releases.

*needs to be fully managed

*US datacenter with all the features you guys would expect to have as far as backbone access, security, power backups, etc..

*Backups by provider. Let's say 5 gigs worth since the old software versions don't really need to be backed up.(I'll recommend his own backups as well)

*Either plesk or cpanel

*15 minute hardware SLA is what the client is asking for but i'd like to present some comparisons to 1 hour SLA companies to see how much he'd save.

And finally, i tried to search for the answer to this but the keywords kept bringing up lots of hits without good info. The client sells software so the bandwidth needed is pretty consistent until they release a new version. Then it skyrockets to the point they may have 1500 people trying to download a 50Meg file simultaneously. What is the right way to handle that? Use a CDN or negotiate with the hosting provider to provide burstable bandwidth as needed. As a side note while looking at many offerings I was most surprised that bandwidth seems to sold in large chunks with overage costs hidden.

What Kind Of Website Can 1GB Ram Handle

Oct 19, 2009

I'm not quite sure how much of Ram I need for my vps, But I'm going to get
1GB Vps from wiredtree.com

Anyone can tell me what kind of website I would be able to run on such an VPS? If it's just wordpress driven website...

Maybe anyone can share how much traffic your site have and how much ram it's using?

At the moment I have website with about 40k uniques/day and ~100k pageloads per day hosted on shared hosting but they have gave me 3days to find another hosting because they say I use to much of their traffic...
