"The purpose of irqbalance is distribute hardware interrupts across processors on a multiprocessor system in order to increase performance."
If I'm running a Xeon Quad, do I really need irqbalance running?

When I try to compile kernel 2.6.19.2-grsec I get the following error.
kernel: irqbalance[1750]: segfault at 000001b202b70b20 rip 000001b2028f9cdb rsp 000077a8404178f0 error 6
kernel: grsec: signal 11 sent to /usr/sbin/irqbalance[irqbalance:1750] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0, parent /bin/bash[bash:1749] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0
I must have tryed to compile the kernel 20 different ways with or with out grsec and I still get the same irqbalance error.
My server is a
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
2GB of DDR2 800 ram
x2 160GB hard drives soft ware raid 1
nvidia chipset mother board

I have a VPS with two IP addresses.
I want to set it up so that the websites are served through, say, IP1 ...
and when I'm browsing through a tunnel, my IP appears as IP2.
Currently, I'm using this method for setting up a tunnel while browsing - [url] im-with-putty/ and browsing through the tunnel appears to be using IP1.
Is there a way to make it use IP2 ? Anything I need to change at the VPS end?

Interesting, for realize very begin level and simple CDN (not for competition with Akamai just for own purpose) or GeoCluster what we will need? I think we need own AS, at least two B/W provider for each point where we need make cluster (for example one cluster in Europe, another in US and one in the somewhere in Asia) and routers and load balancers on each of above point? Own AS i think required to make changes in routing if any of cluster or one of the server in cluster will down (failover feature). Am i right? What we need as minimum to make it work if we need exclude simple point of failures? One or two Cisco routers, one or two Coyotte Point system and lot of servers?

We are comparing these 2 systems:
Intel Quad Core Q9300
4x2.5 GHz
250GB Sata HD
2 GB of ram
vs.
P4 3.0 w/ HT
250GB Sata HD
2 GB of RAM
Thoughts? Would the quad core blow the other away? We are looking to take 2 of the P4 and condense them into 1 of the Q9300...thoughts?
Has anyone done something like this?
How well does the Q9300 perform?

My company is on the market for a new dedicated provider/server and I need to know what the best processor is to go with?
I'm looking for something in the multi-processor/multi-core range, basically an enterprise server that can later be load balanced or clustered in the near future.
Please only experienced professionals with this server range reply.
This is possibly not the best place for this question but none the less, I am giving it a shot.

How much better are Xeon processors than Core 2 Duo processors? What goes into the brand difference? I know that they're built on the same architecture, but I'm unsure as to which is better.
I've got two choices, both Intel processors built on the Kentsfield Core 2 architecture.
Stats seem exactly alike, except one difference: the Core 2 Duo processor has a 9x multiplier (2.4GHz), while the Xeon processor has a 8x multiplier (2.13 GHz). I really see no advantage in taking the Xeon processor, which costs more. Multiplier difference shouldn't make a big deal.
So, anybody know what goes into the "Xeon" brand these days? The exact model numbers, by the way, are Q6600 for the Core 2 Duo and X3210 for the Xeon.

I am looking at some options for a server and have a dual processor question.
I am looking at a server with two Dempsey 5050 processors.
My question is this.
Is it possible to put two Dempsey 5050 processors in a server and turn one of them off so it can not be used?
I know some are going to say why do i want to do this and I might as well explain it now to get it out of the way. My colo will not let me keep space parts on hand and I have a client that may want to single Dempsey 5050 processor in his server and I would like to keep one Dempsey 5050 on hand as a spare for my server and other servers that use the Dempsey 5050 processor. I figured if put one on a board that supports two Dempsey 5050's and turn it off it would be like keeping a spare on hand.

I'm contemplating whether to get a quad core high clock speed OR 2x quad core lower clock speed processor for my rack server.
The question boils down to.. Does Apache, PHP, and MySQL support multi-threading? Will having a bunch of cores just be a waste if high-traffic web hosting is the primary goal?
I run a PHP/MySQL intensive shopping cart.

I've spend some time today in reading about different Intel based processors. I'm learning fast (I didn't know too much about chips... untill now ) but there is something I still need to ask, since I didn't find an answer. So:
Which Quad-Core Xeon processor (from low cost ones) do you like more?
... Kentsfield, Yorkfield, Clovertown, Clovertown" (low voltage), Harpertown, Harpertown (low voltage).
From waht I saw I could guess that Clovertown is the most popular...?
