Spreading Data Over Two Servers
May 9, 2009
I am working with a software package that processes uploaded videos then stores them on the server (similar to a youtube clone script) then embeds them in a page for watching / sharing. The software is basic, doesn't have multi-server capabilities. Is there a way to have the directory the software stores the files in actually mapped to another server so when people watch the movies all the embedding is done on the current server, however the video source is streamed from the second server.
I guess something like a sym-link ? (not sure if that's the right term).
Just looking for some pointers so I can fiddle and get a working outcome.

What are the different ways to have 2 dedicated server work together so i have 0% down time.
I have 2 D. servers. My goal or mission is?
I want to use both servers for web hosting.
Some url will be hosted with one server and the other url will be hosted on other server. For exmaple on Server ONE, i will host X and Y url. But on server TWO i will have a mirror of data for X and Y url.
This means i will have Data of accounts on both servers but one server will host dns of some urls, while other server will host nds of other urls. But both server will have same hosting accounts (mirror = THIS IS DONE THROUGHT WHM/CPANEL).
HOWEVER MORE IMPORTANT, I want to have all my hosting accounts(url) on both server so if my one sever goes down i will I can have the other server have all url ready to work.
I am tryig to do this WITH-IN my domain dealer WITH NS.
If not, what can I do to make use of both of my servers so if one goes down I can not have down time per say. At the same time I will not ran into this email problems? Plus use both server for hosting, too?

Why can't we have Unlimited data on dedicated servers? People say data costs alot of money so dedicated server providers cannot offer unlimited monthly data, but why don't hosting companies lay their own underground/underwater cables coz then they cud charge what they want? Or talk to the current cable owners and see if they can get unlimited data deals.
When u think about it, when u get satellite tv, they don't say u can only watch 100 hours of tv per month, coz u can watch as much tv as u want, yet the satellite still uses data, so y is this not the same for dedi providers?

Has anyone pulled off a mass server move during the middle of the night? We have decided 350 E Cermak is where we want to be but are still working out the details of where we want to be in the building.
While the final details are being finished, I need to come up with some kind of plan to pull the move off with the least amount of downtime. Our current dc is about 4 miles away from 350 Cermak and we have approximately 50 servers to move. I plan on leaving a linux box around to redirect any traffic that is ignoring TTLs.
I was thinking the best thing to do would be label and remove all harddrives, then see if a moving company could put the servers on palettes, wrap them, and move them to 350 E Cermak. Not sure if a moving company would work in the middle of the night or not.
Courier services are pretty much out. Anytime we have had a courier service move anything not in a massive box with padding, it gets bent or broken.

to ask about this offer (millenniumdata dot com/BUSINESS/Business-Default.asp?include=Business-Dedicated-Servers.asp) I found. They have live chat support so i talked with someone and what he did say me is: servers come with Fedora and whole LAMP environment installed, you can SSH to the server, and install VNC, you have full ADMIN rights to install anything you wish, servers are not managed (he said that they are Managed in the sense that they are monitoring PING POWER and PIPE), they can Re-image to default for free, no setup fee, month to month payment.
I didn't use any dedicated server, I only used shared hosting. What I planed is to move my OpenX (former names OpenAds and phpAdsNew) installation to this server for now to see who is that working. I think that server is capable to run it, since it is currently run on shared hosting.

We are developing a new web site that will be collecting private information (no credit cards - only names, phones, email addresses and potentialy addresses etc).
Our company will be based in the EU and the target audience will largely be located in the EU.
We were thinking of using some of the very respected US companies like theplanet or softlayer that have very good prices for a quality service instead of the more expensive and less flexible EU based solutions.
But I was wondering whether this would violate the EU privaxy regulations (not sure if softlayer or theplanet are part of the US Safe Harbor) or whether there would be a way to cover ourselves (e.g. special contractual binds with the provider (which i am hoping would be part of their standard SLA/T&C) or by mentioning in the Terms & conditions of our site that data will be stored in the US.

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.
we plan to have three different types of servers:
- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)
- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)
- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)
could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.
for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...
for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?
for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?
I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.
also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

I have 100+ sites on this hard drive, and one site in particular that meant the world to me.
My host sent the drive to Gillware first, but they failed saying that the file system was so severely damaged that they could not recover anything.
Then shortly after, my host sent it to DriveSavers, a very well-known company, but they also FAILED.
I'm extremely depressed because of this. Please don't post if you're going to say "make sure you do backups next time" because I've heard it 504329504395 times now, and while I do realize my mistake, saying that does NOT help me.
I am willing to spend ALOT to get my sites back. I still have hope. Are there any other companies out there BETTER than DriveSavers? Assuming that you'd still have hope even after two companies failed, where you would you go or what would you do?

I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer.
I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat).
Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server.
111.222.111.222 (Main IP)
111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP)
111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP)
If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes.
If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes.
Is it possible to do this?
If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so)
Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

My host just recently sent the hard drive with my sites to a data recovery company called Gillware. Website is [url]- but they failed and gave the following reason:

Gillware Inc.
Do you guys think there's still hope?
The hard drive is now being shipped to a more well known company, Drive Savers - [url]and I'm guessing that this is the last hope, because the more the drive gets tampered with, the more chance of permanent data loss.
So yeah.. I was just wondering what you think? If the file system is so severely damaged, do you think it STILL can be recovered?

I have recently purchased new hosting with a new supplier which uses a different kind of control panel - cpanel. So before I transfer our organisations website across I want to spend some time playing.
We purchased our domains with 123 reg and the host we have been using for a while is namesco our new hosting package is with neither of these suppliers.
Before I transfer our primary domain to the new host I'm doing a dummy run with one of our other domains and that's where i've come up with this name servers question.
The new host gave me the name of their 2 name servers.
But when I went to my control panel at 123 reg to change the name servers they were not using namesco name servers they were using 123's.
Do I want to change the name servers to the new name servers or not? I'm a bit confused as i was expecting to see namesco names servers?

I'm currently using the ones my registrar offers (Domain Site). But it just happened that they had an outage (they were down for a few minutes).
I'm looking for a more reliable solution. I could get dedicated servers where I'm hosting my servers, and I could also get services (like UltraDNS).
