Shared Host "green" / Carbon Offsetting, Cpanel, $10-$20 A Month

Oct 23, 2009

I'm currently with webfaction (which awesome) for some of my Django installs, but it's a pain for static installations (especially when clients need their own ftp accounts). So, I'm looking for a cpanel host for clients with simple PHP sites (FrogCMS and Wordpress) and static sites. I use an amazon S3 bucket for most of clients images...

I need about 25-50 SQL databases, 5-15 gigs in bandwidth, and 5-10 gigs in storage.

Many of clients are non-profits and have environmental concerns so I need a host that is "green tagged" (purchases energy from renewable resources) and uses offsets (and has a page detailing this).

I'd also like somewhere with a data-center on the east coast (I'm in Montreal)

I have $10-$20 monthly (I purchase for a year).

Can You Get Decent Cpanel/whm Host For Under $50 A Month

Jul 30, 2007

I currently have a server setup with about 10 domains, serving around 4million pages a month to around 110,000 unique visitors.

1 of those domains serves around 99% of the traffic, so I want to move the other domains onto their own server.

I'm looking for a hosting package that offers cpanel/whn interface and the ability to add new hosts. I had a quote from ThePlanet for a very reasonable $89 a month, for a Celeron 2.0 with 512MB RAM.

Green Datacenters- What Do You Classify As Green

Jan 21, 2008

I've seen quite a few data centers advertising about how "green" their facilities and/or services are. However, the great majority are far from actually being green, I don't see Rackspace or AtlantaNAP using solar panels for power (please correct me if I'm wrong). And I wouldn't exactly call using refurbished hardware being "green", as the great majority of older products consume more power than new.

Let me ask the community, what do YOU classify as being "green" ?

VPS And Carbon Emissions

Sep 21, 2007

Is there any research on VPS that can indicate how an end user like myself can figure out how many trees I need to plant to offset the carbon emissions generated by running the VPS so that I am carbon neutral or even better by being carbon negative?

Surprised no hosts appear to have seized on this environmental issue and offer carbon offsets for each new client.

Domain Shows Default Green Cpanel Page

Mar 12, 2008

I don't know why but a domain is showing the green default cpanel page instead of its own homepage. The domain has been hosted on this box for a long time.

DNS is fine, ran udpateuserdomains without error. No dns changes have been made. IP it is set to pings fine. Tested via 3rd party proxy, shows green cpanel page still.

Shows proper IP in httpd.conf

Crucial Paradigm 9-Month Shared Review

Oct 1, 2008

Uptime/A+

Functionality/A-

Speed/A+

Support/B

Support Response Time/A+

Support response time is in minutes. Just like Support everywhere, reading ticket histories gets overlooked, so you often have to repeat entries. Keep entries short to aid reading comprehension. Even at "B," Support is the best I've encountered in seven years and about a dozen hosts.

Gopikrishnan in Support is superb - actually agrees with my tickets, and when the problem can't be corrected, satisfies me with a valid technical reason and suggests a workaround.

After upgrades to cPanel, Horde is initially problematic - you have to reset an option or two and sending email may not work at first.

Steadfast.net Shared Hosting - 6 Month Review

Aug 30, 2008

I will keep this short and to the point.

1. Great uptime. The only downtime I had was that weekend of July 20/21 when they got DDoSed. They stood behind their SLA and credited me with a full month of service without any hesitation or protest.

2. Great Servers. I use my hosting as a development and presentation environment for projects for clients and quality hosting is a must. I rarely see loads higher than 3.00 (it is a quad core server). Combine that with their litespeed webserver. I have never seen slow page loads.

3. Great Support. Tickets are almost always answered in just a few minutes. I have the pleasure of dealing with Karl (the owner) or one of his highly qualified techs, rather than some high school kid who can't tell a bit from a byte (who you often get at other hosts).

Bottom line: I highly recommend them. Keep it up!

Maximum Page Views Per Month A Shared Plan Can Handle

May 3, 2009

By shared plan I mean affordable $8 per month shared plans offered by most cheap hosting providers.

By using wordpress without wp-cache plugin, what's the maximum daily pageviews / page refreshes a shared plan can handle? I mean, in terms of CPU load, before having to upgrade to a VPS plan or sth.

Can anyone give me an approx figure? I'm thinking, if you got 1 visit every 3 seconds, it's 28800 pageviews a day? Any shared plan can handle that right? No other crazy stuff at all, just one domain on wordpress with pure text posts.

I know things vary host by host, but can you give me your own estimation on this?

Please Recommend Host For $12/ Month Or Below

Nov 30, 2008

I'm finding a new host for my sites. I've searched the forums for hours but there were too many results, both positive and negative that I couldn't make decision . So, I want to ask you, who have been with WHT for long time and read the forum often about some good hosts you have experienced.

Details:
Hosting type: shared hosting (with option to upgrade to VPS)
Disk space: 30GB
Bandwidth: min 100GB
Host provider experience: >= 2 years
Budget: <= $12/ month
Could you please recommend some good hosts here?
If you are not so sure, I'll be very grateful if you give me a short list so that I can search for reviews one more time.
Thanks !
Note:

I may lift my budget a bit if needed.

Hawk Host - Month Review

Oct 9, 2009

I have used Hawkhost in the past for a forum (pre-Litespeed change over) I was running and was very pleased. My boss needed a host for her site and HH was one of the first that came to mind. After a quick browse here, it seemed like a no brainer.

I'm happy to say that Hawkhost is still a great host for me and in some aspects, even better than before.

The thing that has really impressed me is the server and network speed. Both of the sites I have with them are purely static content and are noticeably faster than any other host I have used. Proof, to me anyway, that Litespeed really does make a difference. Uptime has been great as well - I'm sitting at 100% since August 26th.

Support is helpful, I have only needed them once for help with a weird directory issue.

I submitted the ticket as medium priority at 10:30 am, first response was at 11:14 and the issue was resolved at 12:08. Not as fast as some other hosts but still adequate by my standards. I wish they would have told me what the issue was, I have never run in to the problem before in 9 years of paid web hosting, but whatever. It got fixed and I guess that is all that matters.

I am signed up with HH for a year (for something like 22 dollars) so I will continue to update this thread as time goes by.

For verification purposes, the domains hosted with them are here and here.

INDWeb Host Almost 2 Month Review

Mar 29, 2009

i am hosted at www.indwebhost.com since 2months. I got to say that they are a nice decent hosting with cheap price. I am currently on a $7USD/year hosting.

I have 1GB space and 10GB bandwidth. and in 2months i had no downtime or slow loading. never seen there server load go above 1.00, the max i have seen is 0.47

i suggest if you have a low hosting budget and less disk space and bandwidth. you should go for their $12/year for 5GB diskspace and 25GB Bandwidth.

You can also pay $1.25/month for 1GB diskspace and 10GB Bandwidth.
But you can find that for free also.

Edit: to much confusion so let me explain.

indwebhost.com is another newly domain created by resellerways.com

reselleyways.com were hacked and they lost all the databases. so they temporary created Indwebhost.com

so my account was moved to indwebhost.com servers. And now if you go to resellerways.com you can check the announcments about their lost of database.

Down Town Host - 4 Month Plus Review

Apr 18, 2008

Over 4 months ago I found myself looking for a new webhost, and through the help of this forum decided on downtownhost. I gave rave reviews based on initial contact, the ease of transfer, and of getting quick help from customer service. I was asked to post another review after a few months, so here it is.

I continue to have nothing but good to say about downtownhost. They have a thorough and easy to navigate self-help system. Their customer service is quick and freindly and managing your site is quick and easy. I've only had experience with 4 hosts now, but I can without hesitation say that downtownhost is "head and shoulders" above the others I've dealt with.

How To Pick A Shared Host

Apr 1, 2009

I've used two different shared hosts in the past. First host had little to no support and got slower and slower as time went on. Second host, has been fine for my personal blog and portfolio site, but the load time is way slow at certain times of the day.

How in the world do you find a shared host that is actually going to be fast? I know you don't want a host that is over-selling, but how do you know a host is overselling? I assume any host that is less than $10/mo and has unlimited everything is going to be oversold, but how do you find one that is going to be responsive. Trial and Error? I've been trying to read the reviews on sitepoint, but I feel like a lot of the time the reviewer is unaware of site load times.

I don't mind doing the research myself, but I can't figure out where to look or how to look.

All I want from my host is fast load times, all the time. I don't have huge traffic, I do have a lot of files, and it's very important when someone comes to my site it loads as fast as possible.

Obviously cheaper is nicer, but I don't mind spending a little extra to have a server that loads fast.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a GOOD shared/reseller host? Geekstorage has had good reviews here, but I've been sorely disappointed in the frequent downtime I've had on two separate servers. Looking to move elsewhere soon if I can find someone else.

Price isn't really an issue. I need at least 20GB of storage. Bandwidth also not an issue.

Shared Host For My Fansite

Oct 8, 2009

I had a fansite on Dreamhost but they wont host us anymore. Probably my fault but i didnt see putting pictures in a zip wrong, since uploading pictures to my gallery singley can be tedious.

Anyway i now have myqsl backups for wordpress and coppermine. The coppermine gallery has around 15,000 images. Its a fairly new site which got 200 uniques roughly a day.

I need a cheap shared host, since i have 2 servers already (but my friend is unable to tell me the details due to health) So im looking for a cheap shared host, that i will pay a yearly sum. I also need this host to restore my fansite since i have no clue what to do with these backups. So my rough budget is 1-3 dollars per month. I have looked around on

Last night i got messed around by ServerRhino - i wont post again what happened but basically i paid for a year package, waited as long as i could before i had to go to bed for the ftp login, i wake up to find ive been refunded with no explaination. All this has made me very angry as i thought il wake up today and have my site back.

The main thing im looking in the host is good support and cheap enough. I also may want to host a second site on it in the future.

Recommendations? Windows ASP.NET Shared Host?

Sep 7, 2008

I'm looking for a good ASP.NET Windows shared host. Here is my current experience thus far:

- WebStrikeSolutions - Excellent web host but doesn't offer MSSQL as part of base package.
- WebSecureStores - Excellent host that does offer MSSQL as part of base package but hasn't updated their website in over a year and hasn't released support for .NET 3.5.
- DiscountASP.NET - Excellent web host, CP is a little wimpy, doesn't offer MSSQL as part of base package.
For me, the essential features are:
- Reliable, reasonable performance (especially uptime).
- Includes MSSQL databases (limited number, but at least 3-5).
- Can handle CMS sites like DotNetNuke without significant slowness.

Deal With Outages On Shared Host

Mar 24, 2009

I run and maintain many websites on a shared server (ICDSoft)

While I am extremely happy with their service and support, the outages are still a problem when they happen. Especially for the e-commerce customers.

They are beginning to ask what do we do in this situation? Generally I reply, there is nothing to do but wait in this situation.

Shared Host , Reliable Mysql

Apr 16, 2009

I know there are a million "looking for cheap shared hosting" threads. Hopefully my particular values/interests justify a new one.

I'm a (mostly PHP/MySQL/CMS) web developer, using Dreamhost for years (perhaps DH was better back then) to host staging/development sites for clients (once I've developed a client site, I usually make them get their own host somewhere more reliable), as well as for low-traffic sites, transferring files, etc.

What I don't like about Dreamhost:

a) SLOW. my guess is this is 25% web server overselling, and 75% MySQL server overselling. My simple sites are tolerably slow - including lightweight php/mysql sites (textpattern CMS, etc.) - BUT my Drupal and Silverstripe and ZenCart experiments are intollerable (5+ second page loads).

b) funny ownership policies - I can't (easily) create a client FTP user that is restricted to one of my subfolders. Each user = exclusive file/folder ownership.
c) not much else. I seem to get a-little-too-frequent DNS problems/outages, and used to get a-little-too-frequent server lock-ups... but I don't expect perfection from a cheap host. And of course I send my mail through google apps, I wouldn't trust a cheap host with my mail.

What I like about Dreamhost:

a) the control panel functionality. Yes, it's ugly, but god it does a lot of nice stuff that cPanel doesn't (and frankly, cPanel is usually ugly too).

b) the usual: a very low price for unlimited domains, unlimited mySQL, and huge storage.

So, who is my next low-cost host?

a) Interested in MySQL performance/protection - perhaps hosts that put MySQL [and mail] on separate servers, like DH, but don't overload them!?! Do I need to worry about this?

b) I wouldn't mind moving to a reseller account

c) I'd like a progressive control panel; I have clients on medialayer - who use directadmin (nice) - but their pricing structure is a bit tight on domains/db/storage. [As an aside, medialayer provides excellent shared hosting performance/value/support, if you don't need a lot of domains/db/storage]

d) I'd like to stay in the $10-20ish a month range

Shared Host <$5/mo - 10+ Addons, 1gb+ Bandwidth

Jun 7, 2009

I tried to put as much as possible into the title

I've had asmallorange for like 6 years now, was great host but lately uptime seemed to suffer a bit. Searching for some new one to try.

Could You recommend a cheap less than $5/mo shared hosting?

What I need:

highest uptime available, 99.8 or above would be great
use more than 10 websites with them, addon domains feature.
bandwidth above 1 gig, maybe above 5, not sure.
support doesn't matter that much, cause I almost never ned to contact them, lol
another thing I'd prefer is to use company's details in WHOIS info - that's really kind of important. Don't like Godaddy's $10 service. Just don't want to pay.

Shared, VPS, Semi-dedicated Host?

Apr 21, 2008

choosing an appropriate webhost solution. I'll be launching a site that will initially serve around 3000-4000 pageviews per day (say 2000-2500 uniques per day) but will go well over 10-15K eventually. Pretty small based on that metric. With just PHP (no dynamic content), my shared host has handled that fairly well for an existing site.

However, this site will need to track search queries...so, each page will do a simple MySQL lookup and either upgrade a count or do a small insert. Again, very simple stuff but not sure how this affect performance and CPU load. Still, I know my provider has pretty low thresholds on max db concurrent connections and they've loaded my server with lots of other sites recently. I'd rather not take a chance after launching.

Based on that simple operation, would you recommend moving to a managed VPS or possibly a semi-dedicated server? The traffic still sounds low but I'm just not sure of the mysql effect

If VPS, it seems like 512M memory should be the minimum for this setup or could I get away with something smaller, like 384M/256M?

I've read good things about MediaLayer's "application hosting" but it still sounds just like shared hosting.

Time For A New Shared Server Host

May 21, 2008

I have been with Page-Zone for a couple years now. Just the past year I have had little problems with them.

-For instance once I was trying to update my website and their server went down. I thought it was something on my end so I started trouble shooting it for an hour and then it came back up.

-Another time the users on my website were without e-mail for a week, because they changed IP address.

-And finally the e-mail accounts couldn't receive any e-mails from Comcast, MSN, or Hotmail accounts. So I ended up setting up a Google Aps account for us to use for e-mail.

Granted they are very cheap but I have been having many problems with little support. Also today I just noticed that in the whois it lists Network Solutions as the technical contact. Are these things that I should be looking for a new host for?
