Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk
I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc. we plan to have three different types of servers: - db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.) - file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.) - web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.) could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs. for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks... for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable? for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server? I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it. also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Shoutcast
I have a windows server 2003 running shoutcast. I have two questions: 1.) Is there a way to send signals via Windows? I need a way to have shoutcast reload it's configuration file without kicking the users. Normally, on *nix, you could just send the kill -s SIGHUP command and it'd do it. But I can't figure out a way to do this on windows. If this isn't possible, does anyone know if you can run shoutcast RELIABLY under cygwin? 2.) The LogFormat that shoutcast outputs looks like this: Code: c-ip c-dns date time cs-uri-stem c-status cs(User-Agent) sc-bytes x-duration avgbandwidth the problem is that cs-uri-stem doesn't include cs-method ("GET") so AWStats fails with the import of the log. Is there a way to manually add this into the way AWStats parses it? If not, is there a special way to parse shoutcast w3c logs in AWStats?

Shoutcast
weve had a box at fdc for over a year. everything was fine until about half that time ago and consistently has gotten worse over time. We've always been really good at tracking down problems til now. traceroute and ping results are usually pretty normal, the machine is not overloaded however our server can barely handle any amount of listeners anymore, in fact it appears as tho the number of listeners has no effect on the server skipping and buffering every few minutes. we've changed the sources its been fed from checked the connection from multiple locations ping and trace results are always decent or shouldnt warrant skipping with any number listeners. in a year weve gone from consistently hosting 100+ to barely getting over 20 and often less lately. its a huge bummer.

Trying To Run A SHOUTcast
I bought a VPS a few days ago and I'm trying to run a SHOUTcast on it. The VPS is Linux, CentOs to be more specific. I've installed Shoutcast and it's running, It's working with WinAmp as the website I'm running it on tells me what song is currently playing, how many listeners there are, etc. It also says: Server Status: Server is currently up and public.

Shoutcast Server
Me and a few friends of mine are planing on creating a Shoutcast online radio station and honestly I'm new to how Shoutcast servers work and witch host would be best for me and my friends. I have a few questions on all this. Am I suck using Winamp to play our music over the server? Or are there other more professional tools to use? This server will be used among a few friends of mine. So if no one us broadcasting will the server play a song play list till some one starts broadcasting? Shoutcast servers only Stream music to Winamp players only? Anyone here got any experience with “rackedhosting.com” Shoutcast service?

My Server And Shoutcast
i upgraded my server a few month back to a better one. SINGLE XEON QUAD CORE 3210 / 1066FSB / 8MB CACHE 4GB DDR2 x2 500GB SATA 7200RPM (RAID-1) 50 Mbps Burst Speed for what ever reason when i try to tune in to my radio it takes more than 10 seconds for the radio to start playing (specially on my port 8000). while other stations (competition) start right away. my question is does it matter if i have my dns like this: [url]:8000 instead of [url]:8000 or do i have to look for something else not well configure?

Latency seems very high (1100ms) Would the fact that the server has been running continuously for 6 days have anything to do with it?

What software will I need to monitor what is going on. 4. Secuity.. 5. control panels.. what to use and will I actually need SCpanel? I am not going to be reselling.. this server will be for me exclusively.. I will only be using this server for broadcasting via shoutcast. Now, Please don't flame me.. these are rediculous questions for some. I happen to learn very quickly and could learn what I need within days. I learned computers this way, I was tired of paying techs to service my pc's. Now i do it all myself..

How Many Shoutcast Slots Can 1 Server Support
I am getting a 100Mbit unmetered dedicated server, Is there any formula to calculate how many slots (listeners) at 128k can this server support? Since this server is unmetered, I can use how much bandwidth I want, but since its shared, I was inform that I should expect 15-30Mbit/s transfer speeds and 5TB-9TB monthly data transfer. Also, if possible I would like to get some help to understand how this all thing with IPs work on the hosting software. The server comes install with CPanel and I am thinking about using Cast-Control or Centova, Where I am complete lost is the domain I give to each client account. Can I make a different IP for each client, or not?

Obviously a good connection and server specs Everyone has different advice it's confusing for a newbie I can't decide on a server and i want to get setup soon. Plus i am kind of on a budget.

WHMSonic Shoutcast Admin Pro
i'm still not too sure how to put all this together, And im starting to feel stressed out I think i need a dedicated server with cpanel/whm installed on it before i can install whmsonic and start selling radio streams with hosting right? How much is this gonna set me back if i want to create a lot of accounts on one sever, I am aware that you should only put so many accounts on one server. I want to be able to offer the extras to the users so if they are not using their account for live shows they can use the auto dj features plus they'd have their web space for uploading audio. And all the good stuff that comes with those features. An example of what i'd like to offer is on sleepy engineers. I just don't know if i have to get all this seperate and put it on a dedicated server mysellf or if there's servers ready with all this installed and ready to use. And i don't have a lot of cash to start out Im thinking 100$ per month to start with. I like cast control's features, but i've only used whm/cpanel before, for setting up web hosting accounts. Most reseller packages put me off it's never really my own service.

To Sell A Lot Of Shoutcast / Hosted Accounts
I'm just curious to how many accounts one can create on a server And have them all in use without going over the server limits. Create 100 listener accounts / 96kpbs Autodj features 1 gig of storage to uploaded audio files How much bandwidth would you allow each account? It's very hard to judge, considering any of them could be running audio files off their hosting 24/7 Or live broadcasting 24/7 It's possible they might be in use this much, or not. I'm looking for a solution not too pricey where we can create a lot of unhosted and hosted shoutcast radio accounts for users. I've been looking at different packages to get ideas dule core, 2 gig ram, 400 gig hard drives Unmetered bandwidth, anything that is linux is good; so centos opperating system I'd need support like msn support But im building a better picture now and i feel these accounts should be ready for some potential clients. I would have thought at the start i could create a few 100 decent sized shoutcast plans with hosting etc on one server. Lets just say i can't afford to fork out 200 per month and not know exactly what i have to do to provide these accounts. But i feel they will sell or i wouldn't waste my time with the idea. If the service is decent i think i'll have a lot of intrest.

More Important For Shoutcast Server? Bandwidth Or Port Speed?
I wonder whatLs more important on a shoutcast server, to get more bandwidth per month as possible, or a faster port connection? I have test a 2 hours music stream at 128k bit rate and was only 5MB per listener ! This is not to host 24/7 radios. Its a project to host DJs /Live Bands at a maximum of 128k, with no more than 2 hours events. Also each event between 50-80 listeners, and not at same days or hours. About the port connection, what this means? : Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN Is it shared and from 10 to 100mbps? I am trying to find the best deal with dedi servers. Have at this moment a unlimited bandwidth /100Mbps shared, but it seems the CPU is too low (AMD Sempron 3100), as I canLt seem to create more than 40 shoutcast accounts (and no client is streaming, just ON), and the server load goes up to 4.5 !! So, I am looking on the market , as I saw better deals with better processors (Pentium4, Core 2 Duo), and much cheaper (below $100), but they only offer 2000/3000GB bandwidth. Whats do you think?

Load Balancing 2 Web Servers And 2 MySQL Servers
I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer. I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat). Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server. 111.222.111.222 (Main IP) 111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP) 111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP) If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes. If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes. Is it possible to do this? If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so) Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers
I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

Name Servers
I have recently purchased new hosting with a new supplier which uses a different kind of control panel - cpanel. So before I transfer our organisations website across I want to spend some time playing. We purchased our domains with 123 reg and the host we have been using for a while is namesco our new hosting package is with neither of these suppliers. Before I transfer our primary domain to the new host I'm doing a dummy run with one of our other domains and that's where i've come up with this name servers question. The new host gave me the name of their 2 name servers. But when I went to my control panel at 123 reg to change the name servers they were not using namesco name servers they were using 123's. Do I want to change the name servers to the new name servers or not? I'm a bit confused as i was expecting to see namesco names servers?
