We have a powerful server for our databases, 8 cores, 4gb ram etc because we have a huge amount of MySQL data. We store the data on a standard SATAII 500GB drive, would we notice a dramatic performance improvement if we stored the data on a SA-SCSI 10/15k drive?

Right now i have a busy running forum Running on a Single Xeon 5335 with 4GB of RAM,
single 73GB SCSI 15K. And the site seems running fine most of the time except at peak.
The load sometime goes up to 8 for about 1 hour. So i am looking to upgrade my server.
The next server i am thinking about is
Single C2Q 9300, 8GB of RAM, 1x750GB SATAII as primary drive for for webserver, 1x150GB Raptor 10K to serve MYSQL only.
I wonder if the HDD performance on my current server server with future server be the same of better? Since the future server has better CPU and RAM, the only thing i worry is the HDD performance.
So in short, Single SCSI 15K V.S Combination of SATA + RAPTOR. What do you guy think?
i am using Litespeed as webserver and i also will be using litespeed on future server.
My server has 2 drives, running on mysql 4.1.21. Can someone give me detailed instructions on how to move mysql to the secondary drive on the same server? The secondary drive has only /backup
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm about to purchase a 2nd server to use as a database server. I've been quoted for 2 x SATA II 320GB hdd's in RAID 1 (the same of which I currently use on my single server), but searching around it appears SCSI is the norm for db servers. The problem is, my host does not offer these as a standard/upgrade option and they would need to be specially ordered (along with RAID card), which is expensive.
The fastest disks they offer are 150GB SATA 10K Raptors. My question is, would these be sufficient (compared to SCSI) and do they perform noticeably better than the standard SATA II disks?

i moved mysql to another drive, and i am getting these errors

[root@viper ~]# ls -la /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

the socket exists.
in cpanel - service manager mysql looks as down, and eximstats the same.
any idea where is the config for modsec and chkserv so that i could set the new mysql.sock location? maybe that will work.
Within 2 servers below, what is faster than:
Server 1:
Primary hard driver: 73GB SCSI 10k (for system, database...)
Secondary hard driver: 160GB SATA (for /home/ directory)
Server 2: 2 x 160GB SATA RAID 1
Would having a 15k rpm SCSI HD (vs 7200rpm SATA) provide significant improvement for a web server only running php scripts (the scripts are small in size, they just make DB calls to another server and return the results)? What if eAccelerator was installed?

I see there are tons of knowledgeable game server professionals in this forum and thought this would be a great place to get some helpful hints while having fun at the same time. I currently have a server colocated in Los Angeles. I was able to get a server built for cheap with the following specs:
IBM eServer 326 (1U)
AMD Opteron 275 (room for 2)
2 GB DDR400 ECC-R
15K SCSI Hard Drives
Windows 2003 Server
Bandwidth: 3Mbps Burstable Mzima.
I'm trying to run a couple of Counter-Strike 1.6 servers for a couple of friends and clanmates of mine. There are currently only 3, maybe up to 5 if possible, servers being run right now with 1 of them being a 24 player public server (which isn't really filled 24/7), the rest are private match servers. I've been trying to accelerate them each to 250FPS+, 250FPS for the public and 500FPS+ for the private match servers but am having running problems.
The problem I am having is that only 1 of the servers will be able steadily maintain 500FPS. The other servers would fluctuate between 300 - 1000FPS. I've tried the "Windows Media Player/Flash" trick, and also the WinHL-Booster metamod plugin none of which have been able to suite our needs. We all want steady 500FPS w/ low pings for our private match servers for CALeague, because we all get jealous of each other.
I’ve been searching around for a while and don’t know what else to do. Any help that you all can provide will be greatly appreciated.

2) how do i find out what type on hdd i have sata or scsi?

I have a server that is running linux with cpanel and I am running out of space on a partition.
I was getting this error:
Drive Warning: /dev/sda3 (/var) is 83% full
I looked in the folder and went to /var/lib/mysql and noticed that I have about 6 databases that are a little over 1 GB each. The sda3 partition only has a capacity for 9.9 GB and I was suggested to configure mysql to hold my databases on another partition that has more space..
1- i did Os Reload with new Hard drive for "home"
2- data "backups" drive lost
3- replaced the old home drive as "/old drive"
4- " /old drive " is now the secondry drive in my server and it has the all sites usres and evry thing
5- what i need , to trasfer, copy this sites from " /old drive " to "home"
but data center said
The /olddrive/home directory contains the contents that were previously in the /home directory. You can copy files from this directory to any other directory on your server.
The command to copy files in the UNIX environment is the "cp" command.
The user directories in /olddrive/home directory contain the web page files for the users. However, simply copying the contents over will not recreate the users or domain entries in DNS/httpd. If you wish these back you will need to recreate them manually or restore them from backups.
Primary drive (centos/cpanel) is corrupt
The server is displaying these errors when I tried to do an FSCK:
Bad inode IO
ext3-fs error (device(8,3)) IO Failure
I am having a new primary installed and old primary set as 2nd drive. I need to recover the cpanel domain accounts from this 2nd drive after I mount it with the method below:
mkdir /backup
mount /dev/sdb1 /backup
However, how do I actually recover these accounts in an automated process via whm? I've done this before with the same matter (corrupt primary drive, mount as 2nd, etc) but cannot exactly remember the proper steps.
I just purchased a brand new 10K 150GB drive. How can I take an exact copy of my current drive and transfer everything over to the new drive? I think I need to create a snapshop, or mirror it somehow.
What software will do this? I was told trueimage, but its very pricy, is there anything else?

Which one do you guys think will give the best performance:

I have a dedicated box and I started getting Input/output errors today.
I tried:

My data is backed up, so was going to ask for a reimage, but is this an indication of bad hardware? Should I ask for a replacement drive? Is there anything else I should try on my own before going to the host?
I am in the process of moving my dedicated server from one location to another. I have requested second drive to be installed on server. How do I access in through SSH? I am using Linux, FC4.
Also, what is the command to compress all data in certain directory, so that I can simply wget the large compressed file from the new server?
I currently have a dedicated server with a single hard drive in it with about 800 cPanel accounts. I am purchasing a new server with identical specs but will have 2 hard drives in RAID1 from the same data center.
Is it possible to make an exact image of the first server to avoid any configuration loss on the new server? I have already spoke to the data center about moving the current IPs to the new server and I know moving the cPanel accounts can be done in WHM but I would like to preserve all of the server settings, configurations, and background scripts that I have running.
I just got this email today, don't know how to remove unused space in that drive or what to do exacly, please help in advice.

All searches on how to resolve this really reveal no solutions.
I did a google search on "disable filesystem quota" among others and could
find nothing.
it looks like dell sell sas mainly without scsi now, with high load server,scsi and sas will better than sata, but the price of sas is higher a lot, i want to ask if you use sas hdd to run your hosting server? and if it is worth to use sas now?

any idea if this is possible? basically what i'd like to do is make a "virtual folder" in my linux box that is actually a connection to an ftp account on another server.
so for e.g. if i say cd /myftp it'll show the contents of that directory as though it was a standard folder, however it is actually connecting to some other machine via ftp?

I have a new 1U server, which I ordered with no CD drive, as I have a little USB external DVD/CD which I would normally load the OS on.
However I have LOST IT !!!!
So I have been crawling the net for ways to install Windows XP (im just using XP for a very short time for testing!) from either a USB stick or by taking the hard drive out of the server, and copying the CD content onto it from a working windows computer.
Maybe what the advantages/disadvantages are of each in regards to a web hosting configuration?

Does anyone know if it is possible to:
Set up the the server with 2 SATA Drives (Raid 1), along with 8 x Ultra320 SCSI Drives (Raid 5 or 6).
Load the OS and set up all Virtual slices on the SATA drives, so that that virtual boot sectors are on the IDE drives, but the main bulk of the clients allotted space on the SCSIs? Is there issue with that and if so, how do you manage that?
