Dedicated Servers And Video Storage And Playing

May 29, 2008

I am trying to find out how many 3 minute videos can be stored on a dedicated server that holds 500GB of Disk Space and how many videos can be viewed at the same time if it has 1500GB of Bandwidth.

We are starting a user-generated site that will potentially receive a lot of videos and someone is trying to persuade us to use a media platform that charges based on views instead of a dedicated server. They are saying the server will not hold many videos nor will large amounts of videos be able to be viewed at the same time.

File Storage For Multiple Web Servers

Nov 5, 2009

What's the best setup for me to have for a machine which will host web files that other servers have to read and serve to end users on the web?

For example, I have servers Web1 and Web2 serving the same content from Files1.

I assume it's best just to go with RAID 10 and be safe or?

More importantly for me, what's the best way for these systems to communicate? I.e.

what protocol should be used for the web servers to read the files from the file server?

I once used SSHFS for serving the same static files on a couple of machines from one location... but that's presumabely very slow (at the time wasn't a problem).

All systems will be running CentOS Linux.

Do File Storage Servers Exist

Nov 26, 2008

is there a low end server just designed for receiving and sending large audio and media files?

like CPU should be minimal, as long as it can send and receive large files to and from a main server which has apache + php + mysql running in it...

would this be cost effective?

Storage, Raid, Front-end Servers/ Coraid

Sep 11, 2007

We're currently serving approx. 150mbit of traffic (mainly video files) via 2 round robin'ed front-end servers. The front-end servers are NFS mounting the content blades so we can access all content via dedicated links to each blade, A,B,C like:

mainsite.com/A/files.wmv (blade A)
mainsite.com/B/files.wmv (blade B)
mainsite.com/C/files.wmv (blade C)

We're fed up with this way of structuring our content because of space issues and because we need to go to blade A to get file X.wmv and to blade C for Y.wmv

We're looking for a better solution and we need your help, I have looked at the producs from Coraid, e.g:

[url] look for "Bundle - CLN21 + SR1521"

Would this be a way to do it? it will give us plenty of storage space and if we could buy 2 sets, we could mirror the sets and mount a set to each front end server to have some failover protection? and we could remove the A,B,C areas and have it all under:

projectABC/
X.wmv
Y.wmv (not so important just an easier way for us to keep track of it)

But is Coraid even used for this kinda task or is it a LAN product? Can it keep up with the 150mbit of file requests, 20-400mbit a piece.

Another idea was to simply build 2 sets of raid boxed with a 16channel raid card some some disks and it would give us something similar to the coraid?

Dedicated Server With Very Large Storage Capacity

Mar 8, 2008

I have found SL can offer you 12*1 TB drive based systems, after RAID-5 and Win 2003 install you get just over 10 TB of storage. The monthly price works out to $1000/Month.

I know some time ago LeaseWeb offered these type of storages....any one else know of any others ?

Amazon S3 works out to about $1500 for 10 TB

Time For A Dedicated? And Opinions On Future Hosting Dedicated Servers?

Mar 26, 2009

Some information about my forum:

I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.

The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.

Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?

The server I am looking at has these stats:

E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management

The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.

Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?

Scalable Raid Storage Storage On A Budget? Also Hdd Reliability Q's

Sep 20, 2007

I'm completely torn on going the absolute budget route vs spending more for something that'll allow easy upgradeability in the future. I basically need lots of space but file sending-- media like mp3s, video, etc.

it'll be raid 5 and I'll need at least 2-3TB initially but the ability to expand would be nice.

option 1:
nice chassis with plenty of hotswap bays with sas expanders
expensive sas raid card

option 2:
cheap chassis to serve "immediate" needs and go with more later.
not sure what I'd use as a card? maybe even onboard?

regarding reliability: I once saw a database of failure rates of different models. raptor was the most reliable of the "desktop" drives. anyone have the link? I'm wondering of the seagate ES drives are worth the extra money vs the non-ES drives. they're supposedely more reliable and the "server versions" of sata drives.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers

Oct 11, 2009

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

So, they are not displayed properly for non-English language websites. The question is that if it is possible to adjust Cpanel 11 settings in to see all the requests in Awstats statistics in Russain?

Ecatel = Colinks = Iqarus | Links With Russian Business Network (RBN)

Nov 30, 2008

Yes, this is probably my first and last thread about reviews about any service provider.

I personally hate bashing people and always tend to resolve matters on my own with providers/customers without involving 3rd party (current/past customers and providers can acknowledge this) but this time its gone way out of the line and this thread is purely meant as a negative review of Ecatel or Colinks or Iqarus or whatever you call this slimy set of people. I am done speaking soft and trying to act nicely to them.
What made me go this far? If a provider accepts the fact that he is wrong after proving countless number of times, I would not make this thread. Heck, I would not make this thread if they did NOT agree that its their fault. This case is gone so far that these people blame me (personally) for all the crap that they have dug. Now its time to bury them in the same pit.

They have ripped me of for around 5000 EUR worth of business every month. I won't go into details but the reason for cancellation is described later in this thread. They have ignored all later attempts of contact after terminating services with us. So I have no clue as to what their problem was.

Coming to the thread title now... does anyone know about the fact the Ecatel was formerly known as Iqarus and before that as Colinks. If there are any senior/old members on this forum who can comment on it, I am sure they can provide quite a number of incidents where this Company has scammed 100+ number of clients.

Here are few links right here on WHT that shows Iqarus's scams:[url]
9 100s of threads claiming their history to be fraudulent

For proof here is one:[url]

Quote:

213.202.214.0/32
Removed ecatel.net SR04
2008-09-28 21:19:58
SBL44871 ECATEL-AS AS29073 = iqarus.com = Colinks = as29073.net
89.248.160.0/20
Removed ecatel.net SR04
2008-09-28 21:20:11
SBL44870 ECATEL-AS AS29073 = iqarus.com = Colinks hosting spammers

At this point it is very easy to tell what kind of a shaddy organization this is. Sending SPAM emails consecutively and become known for it... hmmm.

Okay, lets all assume that now Ecatel is a clean organization. May be the bad habits have been left to die with the two old fraudulent Companies. But NO! They are the same set of people and have turned even worse... Now they are in direct relationship with the a Russian cyber-gang known as the Russian Business Network (RBN). I make a big claim here because the RBN is probably wanted by most law-enforcement authories around the world. You can read more about RBN here, here and here (please read this in particular). Now here are my findings depicting RBN and Ecatel's affiliation:[url].[url]
Here is a detailed explaination of their recent outage which also shows their relationship with the RBN AND their slimy activies (I love this link):[url]

You can just Google "rbn ecatel" and find thousands of results deeming this organizations links with the RBN. I am now not the sole person having these facts. Most people involved with networking security know about this and now its time for the layman to know too.

At this point I proved that it is safer to keep away from Ecatel so that:

- you can stay away from all RBN related prosectutions

- prevent yourself from being scammed (colinks/iqarus quote)

I know pretty well how Ecatel is going to react/reply to this thread. Obviously for starters put up a pile of garbage info they will generate on me with no factual evidence whatsoever (they have gone far enough as to mention I have links with RBN and thus my rant here). AND completely ignoring to defend themselves of the claims I have made above (its their specality on escaping such blames).

I urge everyone of you to first ask Ecatel for a response for the above claims and then (if they last that long; they can open a new thread, WHT loves good content) they can hammer me with all the garbage they will pile up. Notice here that, all my proof of evidence is directly quote from 3rd party reliable websites and not from my email inbox that only I can verify. Ofcourse Ecatel will ignore this statement and continue to hammer me with falsified information, but I have another reliable 3rd party website that I can use as protection (as atleast he says the situation the same way as I do).[url]

I hope you all make proper and informed decisions. Oh btw, according to Dutch law (or perhaps every country's law) an Internet Service Provider needs to have an agreement with their client about what they are allowed to run on their network (known as Terms of Service/Acceptable Usage Policy) and Ecatel has none. These people can be shutdown easily because of just this, forget all the RBN and crap!

Its 4:30 AM here. Will go and get a cup of coffee and wait for replies. Will definite get my lawyer working on these guys. I am hell determined to close this case for good. And extremely sorry for the long thread...

Dedicated Servers Or 2 VPS

Now, I want more resource. Should I buy another VPS ($30/mo)? Or buy a dedicated server(<=$60/mo)?

I understand that the 3rd choice is 1 upgraded VPS($60/mo). But I do NOT think it's better than 2 small VPS($30/mo).

which one is better? For now, I do NOT want to pay more than $60/mo.

Those Sub-$30 Dedicated Servers

My lease with LayeredTech is about to renew, so I am looking for better deals, and I found several $23 $24 $30 dedicated offers here. How are those servers/network/dc comparing to layeredtech?

I have not been looking for 2 years, because I was in other business. Badly needing a update on server industry now.

I thought utility bills are up, inflation is high, so it is a shock to see the price of dedicated servers are falling.

~$70 Dedicated Servers In US/CA That Allow IRC

A server that has atleast 1GHz of processing power is good, such as a (Dual) P3 or a Celeron, or anything better.
It needs atleast 512MB of ram, and atleast 10GB IDE/SCSI (SCSI preferred, not needed) HDD.
And with atleast 1TB+ bandwidth.

Netdirekt has a $50 server which is what I need, though its in Germany, I prefer a USA/Canada server.

Servers (VPS Or Dedicated)

My main requirements are PHP5, MySQL5 and OpenSSL. What would your suggestions be for a host / server specification? Unfortunately as I am not using any advertising so my monthly budget is rather low ($50). We currently have a dedicated server with a 2.4ghz processor and 512mb ram but I would be more than happy to move to a vps if it would be more reliable.

Mirroring And Dedicated Servers

Apr 3, 2006

We’ve been asked to offer a technical proposal for a new established TV station, and the IT manager of the station has a long list of requirements, we covered it all, only one issues lift as we never done it before:

They want about 20-100 GB server for hosting and they want to have a mirror server, incase the 1st server was down, so it would redirect the visitors to the mirror server, I'm thinking of getting them a dedicated or semi-dedicated server, but how do you do the mirror issue.
Some one said to get two dedicated servers, but::

1. How we make it that when one is down, it automatically directed to the other, I believe there is software’s for that, so were do we install this software: the original server or the mirror server.

2. Should they be from two different companies and to different countries?

3. The web site will be with CMS and DB, how do you make sure that the mirror server have all the new data that was updated in the 1st server’s DB, do they have like shared DB or something, and how..

Any other information, links, or suggested hosting sites for reliable dedicated server (with big bandwidth) would be greatly appreciated.. thanx

P.S. We use PHP/ MySql technology.

Dedicated Servers Feedback

Oct 2, 2009

In these past many years I have used 7 major data centers which provide collocation and dedicated servers.

Out of these 7 provides, what would make a client impressed?

One is off course the level of reliability, the network must be up without anyone bothering it.

Second is the level of security, when someone is bothering it, their team must be extremely responsive to provide help to restore service back to normal, it doesn't matter if there is an additional fee for it, availability is crucial.

Third would be the response time, which is critical, because this gets personal. When a client needs an "urgent" help, if the provider successfully responded the urgency in a timely manner, it will build an great sense of trust.

It's like you as the provider is storing up "trust funds" into your clients. If you keep doing this, when something bad happens, you will have enough trust funds deposited into your client's faith, so they will eventually understand the situation.

From these many years of using many major provider, I can only experience an amazing level of service from one single provider, which are always dependable and are able to respond to my inquiries within minutes, not hours.

A client expect a reply in minutes when they are leasing a dedicated server or even collocating their servers with a provider.

So far, only one seems to be able to provide such an excellent service.

This is not a rating about a particular provider, but I would like to give an input to dedicated server providers on what's important when it comes to building a good client relationship.

Willing to do an extra mile help would definitely a big plus which I also experience with the same provider.

Lastly, I would like to leave my total satisfaction review for the one provider which surpasses my expectation being their client. The one and only provider which I personally experienced an outstanding level of service is ThePlanet.

With their pricing, the level of service I received as a client is outstanding.
