Running A File Hosting Site
Sep 22, 2008
going to be starting a file hosting site, i know that the main problem on these sort of sites for the owners is Bandwith and HD space. Just want to know some perhaps some advice on how to run this kind of business as far as the hosting part of it goes.
Do i just keep purchasing servers lets say at midphase for example they offer 10TB 250 Gigs of hdspace at 200 a month, so if i go over do i just keep purchasing servers and then load balance the site across all the servers i get? is that the basics ?
When sites start to consume massive amounts of bandwidth is their cheaper alternatives then just going with the normal BW that hosts offer, like working out deals with certain companies that specialize in giving BW deals, would CDN networks be an option?

I am planning on starting a file/image uploading website using a custom script I wrote.
I was wondering if anyone who has had experience with these kinds of sites before could give me some info on the bandwidth usage, disk space, ect. And what kind of package I would need. I was thinking of a VPS?

I am having a site developed that will have a "front end" - ie the actual website with a login members area etc. The "back end" will be a set of scripts that work behind the scenes, including a bot that visits other sites and passes info to those sites.
The concern I have is, if I put the whole lot on one Cpanel, and then it gets whacked by a surge of traffic etc, the "back end" will crash as well.
My question is, would it be better to host the site itself on one cpanel account, but store the Db and the back end scripts on another cpanel, both on the same server. Then even if the site cpanel maxes out or crashes, the processes will continue to run? The site itself would also need to access the Db stored on the second cpanel.

I'm trying to run a template file on a windows server.
It worked on my desktop PC.
Does the server need some type of tpl program or option on it, to run the tpl file?
I can't just create a tpl file in notepad and give it a tpl extension right?
What am I missing? it worked fine on my PC, but not on the server.

Current Status
My main website is a dating/magazine/community site.
I use server ONE for as my main server for:
nameserver
mail
apache - php
mysql
This server uses FreeBSD with CPanel/WHM
Server ONE load averages are about 1-1.5
A year ago I got another server (server TWO) to host a php chat script, and unload the main server. This server hasn't a domain attached to it and I'm using it through its IP.
This server runs:
apache - php
mysql
And it also uses FreeBSD but with Webmin.
The load averages for Server TWO are about 0.20.
Recently I transfered all the images of Server ONE to server TWO, with a good result for loads on server ONE.
What I want to doSome users of the site complain that they can't see any images of the site due to IP based images src.
So I want to set up a redirection so images.example.com to redirect transparently to the other server.
When I tried to setup a subdomain redirection through Cpanel, I just got again the IP of the other server.
Who can this be done?
If I must setup DNS stuff in server TWO, in order to achive it, can I use it also as spare nameservers for the domains hosted on Server ONE?
What else is easy to transfer to server TWO in order to unload server ONE?

Mirror a site running server 2003 web services
I'm a network admin at a university and one of the departments is hosting their site on their own personal server running Server 2003 and Windows Web services. They've been asking me how would they go about mirroring their site in the event of a power loss intentional or otherwise. There are times during holiday periods where building maintenance will shut off power but they still want students to be able to get to their site. So they want to set up a mirror on another server in an office offsite.
I've done some research on the subject but I haven't been able to find anything dealing with mirroring Microsoft hosted sites.

to be able to place a video on a website, but it's in VOB format. There are several files with that extension included with the movie. The movie has an intro where you can choose a from a menu to see various parts of it.
I believe this movie needs to be converted to a diferent format (MPEG3 or 4, or ?) to be used on the site, but haven't done this before. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have it in pieces, so the menu calls separate files allowing it to be downloaded and viewed only if they want that section as opposed to downloading the entire huge movie to see anything at all.
Can this movie be broken into parts as separate movies or clips?
What software can do this (I have Nero, which claims to be able to convert, but has nothign about splitting the movie)?
What format should be used (it's a demo movie for a product)?
I've never worked with movie files of any sort before, so any help you can offer would be most appreciated. Searching the web hasn't produced anything remotely useful, maybe because of incorrect search terms.

I'm currently hosting with softlayer and running the following:
4 super fast http servers on a load balancer with 1000 connections (costs a fair amount) - apache 2.0
1 fast mysql server (the server is starting to struggle but i'm concerned about expanding this because clustering mysql is very complicated in my situation) - mysql 5.0
I was looking at amazon s3 and it said it would only cost me $2,500 for my needs which is not only considerably cheaper but i think theirs would be even faster than softlayers with their network and the fact that there wouldn't be hundreds of mysql connections per second as there is now.
Money is not really an issue, I'm more concerned about flexibility and in case i get a ddos attack that i can handle it since softlayer doesn't provide ddos protection (cisco guard) on load balanced IPs and all IP requests to the server show as the load balancer IP.

I'm trying to find at least three web hosting companies to choose from to host a Joomla websites on a shared server. Would consider dedicated if the deal was right. I have a friend of mine who wants to create a church website, and is looking for the best deal. I use Netfirms which I have never had an issue with, but I didn't want to be bias, and would like give him other options to choose from.
Is there a good WebHosting Review site, I could check out, or maybe someone could recommend their top three. I reading threw the forums here and I noticed there are not that many complaints with Hostgator. Again, I just want to see if there was anything out there better.

As cPanel is an integral part of server hosting and has the ability of compiling Apache 1.3.x with PHP4 (cgi) and PHP5 (dso) on your server OS.
Does anyone know or have baselines/benchmarks for which performs better generally for hosting: 32bit or 64bit RedHat 5 when cPanel 11 has compiled for the Apache and php mentioned above on either of these OS editions? (assume latest versions of apache/php4/5)
I was wondering if 32bit performed better or 64bit on a quad core Xeon. Don't forget PHP is compiled for prefork and not multi-threading for Apache 1.3.41 (which are considered legacy 32bit forked apps compiled against 64bit OS).
Or rephrased, could i be hampering performance by running it on a 64bit OS on a Xeon (X3210) or improving performance? I'd assume 64bit would offer better all round processing power, or is this a misconception.
I recently decided to get a server on RedHat Enterprise 5 X86_64 (64bit), when i wondered if 32bit version would have provided better performance and been the better options for compatibility.

I'm trying to run a simple bash script when a new account is created, because I need to move some files automatically. So what I did:
I have created a simple bash script for testing if Plesk run it, called move_some_files.sh under /var/www
Code:
#!/bin/bash
echo "${NEW_SYSTEM_USER} ${NEW_DOMAIN_NAME}" >> move_some_files.log
I created this file as root and did chmod +x.
I created a new 'Hosting settings created' event running as root and with the highest priority with this command: /var/www/move_some_files.sh
I created a new customer with to test it
But, is not running the script! If I try some command directly on the event like 'touch /var/www/new_file' it's created, so the event is running, but not my script.

As somebody who has bought the 'Build Your Own ASP.NET 2.0 Web Site Using C# & VB' by CRISTIAN DARIE and ZAK RUVALCABA, I wonder what Hosting deals are considered the best and most user friendly (robust and support).
By this I mean, the most competitive for users like me who are just learning the technology and maybe want to set up some basic book examples online using SQL 2005.

I have looked far and wide for a hosting company that supports ASP.NET as well has SQL server (and that allows remote connections via MS Enterprise Man). I have used Godaddy for years, but trying to access a SQL or MySQL db for development is complicated and pathetic. I have looked at many new Hosting CO's, including m6,1and1,ixwebhosting,************,hostmonster,bluehost, and others mentioned here; but All I can find is dozens of reviews, mostly bad and very few good, on about ANY company that I google for except the ($20+) monthly ones. I have found a site called reliablesite.net, that interests me. (I am non profit org paying out of my pocket). I have seen good reviews but a couple that are very 'bad' for me, such as no sites hosted on this provider, no phone number or where the company is at. Any insights on the provider. I am needing an ASP.NET / SQL provider (low volume traffic). (I found a reliable ? discountasp.net but there price w/SQL is too high..) , so am looking at reliablesite.net. Just tired of looking at dozens of bad reviews on about any site I google for...

I'm after some hosting for some adult content (nothing too bad!) as my current host won't allow it (no big loss, they're atrocious anyway)
Preferably something UK or US based, not too bothered either way as long as it's fairly reasonable in price and has a good service.
Not sure about bandwidth limits, to say the site is in it's early stages would be an understatement, but something flexible would be good.
