All these are free but which is best. What are the pros and cons? Have been using Virtuozzo and I love it but thinking about offering cheaper solutions with GPL software.

View 12 Replies View Relatedim thinking of trying out virtualization, but before I start investing in a serious server for it I like some experience with a testserver.
but what do you recommend? VMware, virtuozzo or something else?
what are the pros/cons with the VMware/virtuozzo? and what are your experiences?
Which one do you prefer more and why?
Virtuozzo is very expensive while OpenVZ is free and it is somehow another Virtuozzo, but made simpler?
As a provider of Virtual Private Servers im looking at ways to expand our business, I love the fact that we can offer our clients such a good service with the low price we presently charge but as a "Client" or "Potential Client" what would your views be on Virtuozzo?
Is it worth our business cutting our already low profits and going with Virtuozzo as our VPS Control Panel?
This is something we are very interested in doing and we feel it would be a big jump from the very low-end budget HyperVM/OpenVZ Approach.
Your Views on the Virtuozzo Vs HvM/OvZ would be very helpfull.
Would you rather buy a low priced Virtozzo VPS or an even lower priced HyperVM powered VPS? Im quite lost as to wether the financial investment would be worth it, I don't see how it wouldnt be as HyperVM is very buggy and really doesnt give a full sense of security in my personal opinion.
This poll is purely for market research but I figure other VPS providers might get some info out of it. Its a simple question to customers more than hosts.
Do you prefer OpenVZ,Virtuozzo or Xen and why?
I personally know which I preferr from a providers point of view but wondered about clients
Assume hardware is equal. OpenVZ/Xen have a custom control panel (HyperVM or similar). Virtuozzo has VZPP
A friend of mine is looking to develop a pretty extensive and complex website and would like to be able to use something similar to VMWare server, but doesn't want to be locked into VMware and needing to find a small fortune just to build out his application should either VMware start charging for VMware Server or having to move up to one of their high-end high-cost solutions.
I know with Virtuozzo the licensing fees are reasonably low, but does anyone have any experience using it outside of the hosting industry?
Does the software lend itself well to being used by a single client who is not using it to sell VPSs?
I'm running a dedicated server and the main site on the server relies on Windows OS. The site is not fully utilizing the potential of the dedicated server, so I'd like to put some of my other sites on the same server and eliminate the other (shared) hosting I've been using.
Here's the catch... For the other sites, I'd like to run WHM/Cpanel which requires Linux.
If I understand correctly, this leaves me with having to decide on a virtualization solution, which I know nothing about. Some options I have been given are VMware, Virtuozzo, and Xen.
Would you suggest one of these or a different solution entirely?
Does anyone know how you can move an entire HyperVM (OpenVZ) Node to Virtuozzo. What has to be copied because we tried coping /vz/private/<VEID> and /etc/sysconfig/vz-scripts/<VEID> and we were not able to get the VE to start. We were getting an error:
Starting Container ...
Can't mount: /vz/template:/vz/private/1110 /vz/root/1110: No such file or directory
Container start failed
We tried rebooting the server as some other sites mention but still no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated because when we contacted Parallels they did not seem to have answer. (we are still waiting on a ticket reply though)
Its becoming more and more difficult to manage VPS using HyperVM and I am personally sick of the control panel design.
So does anyone have any great ideas to move all the VPS in HyperVM (OVZ) to Virtuozzo (PIM)?
If there isn't, I think I'll have to move all data across the orthodox way - which I clearly want to avoid.
PS: OVZ is on a different node from the VZ (duh!) but also will be utilizing different IP ranges. So, I think I need advice on changing IPs of the VEs too.
I am looking for a bit of perspective from current VPS hosts.
Which do you prefer Virtuozzo or OpenVZ?
What are the pros/cons?
Greetings:
Are there any calculators, white papers, or other guidelines that provide guidance for sizing a physical server to be used for openvz or Virtuozzo for Linux?
i.e. if you want to run “x” VPS nodes totaling “y” disk space needing “z” number of processes, etc. you will need “n” CPU’s of at least ____ Ghz with ____ RAM, and ____ hard drive space of which ________ should be reserved for the operating system and openvz system software
Also for openvz or Virtuozzo for Linux, which RAID provides the fastest performance without trading off too much for hard drive reliability?
How to create a simple template using existing VPS?
I can create simply compressing the dir of an active VPS?
Example: tar -zcvf template.tar.gz /vz/private/VEID

"Create a zend id for your machine." This is apparently for them to create a product key for their software and have to bind to it?!
I have never heard of this and have been unable to locate any information on it.

I am going to be sending a 2U server in for colocation. It will be running CentOS 5 64bit at the core and be utilizing VMware for virtual machines.
If I get say 8 ( 5 usable ) IPs as apart of my colocation plan, how can I delegate which IPs goto which virtual machine?
my friend install VMware on his server to run vps, it looks likely interesting, do you use VMware to offer vps?

View 14 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone here use VMware server on a dedicated server to run Windows or other OS? And in terms of IP address how would this work? Do you need to set the VM as being NATed, or does it have it's own external IP? In terms of performance on a typical 100$-200$/mo dedicated server, how good is it? All these factors depend on a lot of things and I realize that, though. (what apps run, etc)
And do server providers even allow to install something like this? I've never leased a dedicated server before but I'm thinking of getting a linux one, but also running a windows VM for a RunUO server, and unfortunately that only runs in windows. I want a linux server as I prefer LAMP for hosting, and I'd try to get a few clients on the server just so I can pay it off monthly. Also Linux servers are generally cheaper monthly and I like the idea of using SSH tunnels rather then straight RDP, which gives me chills just thinking of, from a security perspective.
Not to start a flamewar, but I was curious about real world scenarios, and peoples experience with and recommendations for either.
I have been asked to plan out a smallish virtualization environment (10-12 Dell hosts, iSCSI Equalogic backend), and when reviewing the cost of going with VMWare over Citrix, I can't seem to justify the costs. I figure since Amazon runs on Xen, it must be pretty decent, but am I missing something?
I'm curious if there are any providers out there providing VMWare hosting per instance? Where I could just upload a VM and pay to host that VM?

Does anyone use vmware to host vps?
View 8 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone think this is feasable? For instance, we all see web servers hosted in the "cloud", as well as pay per user exchange and other mail servers.
Now, what if I wanted to host all my servers (web, email, file, domain controller, and several application servers) at a data center using Vmware.
I did some research and found out that the cost of creating a private cloud (VMWARE licensing alone) would be prohibitive. Is there a way to rent/lease a "private cloud"? Or perhaps I would not even mind if we shared space with others on the server(s) on a "public cloud".
Any ideas on if VPS (or other types of) hosters that could provide this service?
I'm not sure how many people here use VMWare, but I'll give this question a shot... I'm looking for a solution similar to Winrar that can view the contents of the .vmdk file. Either to extract any files, or just view the contents without having the have the virtual machine online. I checked Google as well as VMWare's forums/website with no avail.
