Offsite Backup Services?

Jun 2, 2008

leave LayeredTech completely, including Dynavol.

My new host I've chosen doesn't have backup services, but no big deal. I'd like to know what people out there use (Company and Specific Services) for off site backup of their servers.

I can either do push or pull. I liked how Dynavol worked. I guess if that's the best option I could keep LT strictly for Dynavol, but looking to see what others think.

UK To USA Offsite Backup, To Slow

Apr 18, 2009

I have a server in UK and i want to make daily offsite backups to a remote location using rsync or other similar software.

My idea is to buy a backup server in USA, but i dont know if is going to work well/fast because of the long distance between UK and USA (latency).

So any experiences making backups from UK > USA?

What do you think, can i buy a backup server in USA or if i want to have fast/reliable backups i have to buy a server also in uk because of the distance?

Offsite Backup Server

Nov 6, 2007

running my own servers but i have been hosting websites for a years now using a dedi server in the USA through c-Panel, now i am looking to offer my clients offsite backup to a local server at my end, offering small to large packages of bandwidth and storage.

Anyway i have all that sorted the thing is i had a webpage developer create the pages for me and configure it to my ip address (as im not using a domain name for this server) the problem im having is hosting these pages on my centOS 5 server setting up apache, ftp, etc. i require a username and password for each of my clients and when they log in they will be displayed with there file inventory including the files they have uploaded, where that is the other problem i am having creating username and passwords for each of my clients what would be the best software that could do this? remember these backups are via ftp and a web based interface for files up to 500mb but to use a ftp program i will still need to create a username and password for each of my clients

Offsite Backup Of Dedicated Server

Sep 13, 2008

I have a managed dedicated server at a co-location. While the service I pay for runs the Cpanel backup function, I feel I need to provide a better service to my customers by creating an exact duplicate(image) of the drive itself. I don’t want my customers to lose their databases and web site information.

I need help with creating a Plan B. The plan I thought might work, would be to get a workstation, download Acronis and make an image of my dedicated server on a scheduled basis.

The reasons I thought this was a good idea:

1) I would have the image in my hands(my control), should something happen to my main hosting server.

2) It would create a complete off-site back-up.

3) It seemed cost effective.

What if Scenario:

So my main hosting server gets taken away in a hurricane and the data center will not be up and running for 3 months. I have an image of the hard disk, now what do I do with it?

Backup: Offsite, Cross VPS, Security Of Backups

Feb 11, 2008

I have two VPS's, VPS1 has one vbulletin community. VPS2 has about 10 cpanel accounts, mostly email, a blog site, etc. Both VPS's well under 10 gig in size not including any backups stored on the VPS.

For the more important VPS, VPS1, I am packaging the cpanel account (50mb) and SCPing it to VPS2.

I am also running pckgacct on the cpanel accounts on VPS2 (about 2 gig total, 1 tar.gz is 1.5gb, three others around 250mb, others smaller) and storing them on VPS2.

I then have WS_FTP scheduled to download the cpanel tar.gz files each night to a local machine.

I also have WHM setup to do daily incremental backups, but am not moving any of these offsite.

So, it seems I have three options:
Keep doing what I am doing.
Keep moving VPS1 tar.gz files to VPS2, but also start moving VPS2 tar.gz files to VPS1.
Start moving tar.gz files (or raw files with rsync) to offsite storage.

I'm curious on some feedback about the three options. These are personal sites, I am not reselling any sites/packages.

It seems like from a data security standpoint (email and stuff), the more 'locations' introduced into the loop, the less security there will be. Does anyone get concerned about moving their email and other data to offsite storage services?

As I said, I have a technical solution currently working, but I am wondering about the theory/data protection aspects of the various options for going forward.

Offsite Backups (via Rsync) - What Files/folders To Backup

Jun 3, 2009

I'm currently using (amongst other backup systems) rsync to an offsite space (am using BQBackup at the moment)

I'm just wondering - apart from backing up all of /home/, /var/lib/mysql/ and the important config files (httpd.conf, php.conf, etc etc) is there anything else that *needs* to be backed up?

Obviously in a worst case scenario, a new machine would be deployed with a fresh OS install (and a fresh WHM/cPanel install) so I wouldn't worry about backing up OS files or cPanel core files, although I'm wondering if there's anything apart from the /home/ directory and the MySQL databases which would be lost (and so need backing up) in the event of a crash?

Weekly Offsite CPanel Backup Process Crashing Apache/bind

Mar 19, 2007

Right now I am using the built-in cpanel backup feature to backup all the accounts on my server to an offsite FTP backup account I have on a weekly basis. The problem I am having is that everytime the backup runs, the load (thats what I'm guessing is the cause) is crashing apache/bind, causing sites to be unreachable until I can restart the services. What options do I have to resolve this issue? Currently I already have spri installed, and it does help out a bit, but its still not enough.

My current solution is constantly giving broken pipe lines error. I was told this is because of overloaded backup servers. I did had my own CDP server running on the same DC and it worked like a charm, but currently my provider says it will not support it anymore and its terrible slow on his CDP server, besides it breaks backup.

Can someone point me one a CDP solution that works?

Offsite Secondary DNS

Jul 5, 2007

would it be possible to have my main box running apache, a second box for dns/other and an offsite secondary dns such as DNS1.PUBLIC-DNS.NET?

Is it possible to authenticate the primary and offsite secondary nameserver so the zone is transferred to the secondary? Would i need to pay for a special service, or do free ones exist? Are there any security implications with zone files being transferred out over the public internet, would a vpn need to be configured or can the process be encrypted via the transfer procedure?

Finally, how would this affect the way the entire virtual hosting works? I know when the nameserver on the host machine serves resolves a name request for a computer trying to browse the site in question, but when the actual http request goes to the web server does it incldue the domain it is looking at also?

What's The Best Way To Setup Offsite Email (rackspace) With Server

Jun 28, 2009

We have a server where we host the sites and email services, and we are looking to buy a MS Exchange offsite email solution in order to have a reliable dedicated email service.

We are thinking on going with Rackspace MS Exchange solution:
http://www.rackspace.com/email_hosting/exchange_hosting

So now its the hard part, i run my own dns / nameservers at this server so if i just change the mx at my Plesk panel if my webserver goes offline my email will also stop working, correct?

And at my registrar i only can change the name of the nameservers and the ips... and also add more nameservers (im using 2 ns).

So i need to figure it out how to config/setup the rackspace email in a way that when my webserver goes offline my email can keep up working.

The rackspace support team, said to me that they can host/run my dns on their servers in order to have my email working if my webserver goes offline.

So what do you think? Its a goo idea? The only idea?

Or there are better ideas?

for the Past 5 years I've been using a VPS with cPanel to point an A record to the IP instead of using the other (shared, resseller and other VPS) IPs or public DNS.

I'm looking for a similar service, that can provide:

- my own DNS (or the hability to point my DNS to the IP)

- can add A, PTR, rDNS records

- less than 20$ month for 50 domains

Anyone know a service like that that recommend?

Connecting Several Services Together,

May 9, 2009

I've purchased a NL Master reseller (about to purchase one in the US) and then a small VPS to see what more I could do, after transferring my site over to the VPS from the NL server I thought I'd come up with the idea with selling master reseller accounts, (both from NL and US master reseller services) the reason I came up with is because the VPS isn't to large to really do anything but seems perfect to keep a database, payment portal, WHMCS, my site, and hopefully all of my client information. What i want to do is somehow connect all 3 together so that when i do create a new client in LxAdmin I can select witch server I want to create it on and what package/permissions and what not, all from the VPS.

Example: LxAdmin -> create client -> fills out form basically similar that to the one in WHM

Resellers/VPS run CentOS Linux
WHM: 11.24.2
cPanel: 11.24.4-R35075
CENTOS 5.2 i686 virtuozzo

So basic question, is all this possible ? this including domains/email/ftp/ect.

Outsource All Web Services

Jan 21, 2009

I wanted to know if there is a provider that will host our sites and provide site maintence all in one package(EX: any changes we want to the website they can do it). We are trying to move away from having multiple hosts and resellers from our multiple sites for our hosting and site maintenance. Alot of companies out there just do the hosting and suggest to get a third party to provide the site maintenance. Basically we want the ability to change anything on our website but have someone who knows what they are doing and do it for us and not take forever to implement changes to the website.

Services And Optimization

Jul 25, 2009

I am switching from shared hosting to managed VPS. I have minimal knowledge of UNIX/Apache, pretty good with PHP and programming in general.

So, what I have now is my VPS, with 512mb of ram, CentOS, cpanel and my two sites, not live yet, that is, I haven't changed dns records in the registrar.

I want to try to optimize the box or whatever is the correct name for it and understand the whole thing better. Mainly to learn more, I dot' think I'll be pressed for memory or bandwidth for now. Still, at least knowing things I can optimize for speed of space.

Few things that I assume should allow for some simplification and RAM savings(hopefully) is that:

a) Both sites are hobby sites, not very big load. Few thousand visitors a day. Traffic is around 10gb monthly combined.

b) Both sites are mine, nobody else on that box, so I don't have to worry about customers screwing things up and caging things internally.

Based on that, I don't really need email for the second site domain.

When I run top command I see 2 exim processes running. Is that normal, or is it because I have 2 domains registered there? And if yes can one be disabled?

Same applies to pop3-login and imap-login processes, 2 copies of each. Can I have just one of each, i.e. exim, pop3-login and imap-login?

Next, I selected not to run log analyzer cpanellogd for 21 hours, i.e. it'll run for 3 hours a day. I assume that should be sufficient for the site like mine?

I did read sticky about securing the site and quite a bit about Apache/mysql optimizations.

EditDns.net - fine, but it has several times rolled abck their DB state, wiping out my records. I can't name that a rliable service.

EveryDns.net - fine, quick, easy to manage. Con: I have tried to donate, to have limits removed, but my donation was never recorded, all the attempts to contact the administration failed, as well.

Flux Services

Feb 25, 2008

Every month, I pay my invoice and everything is fine but in Febuary, after I paid it, I received a ''Payment reminder'' and I was a bit surprised but I replied explaining it was already paid and gave the paypal transaction ID #. I received an apology and they said it was fixed. A week later (or so), I received the a ''reminder #2''. I replied the same thing and the girl at the billing service aplogied and assured me that the invoice was now marked as paid and it shouldn't happen anymore.

This morning I got a ''Last reminder'' (15 days overdue). I sent the same informations again but now my website is disabled.

Am I alone in this situation or is it a known issue with Flux services or anything? I find a bit ridiculous, to be honest, to have a such issue about an invoice that IS paid and confirmed by them as paid but having the system send me reminder over and over and having, subsequently, them disabling my website.

I am interested in blocking translation services from accessing my site, such as Google Translate and Yahoo Babelfish.

Google's translation tool adheres to a nice meta tag, so that's taken care of, but Yahoo doesn't appear to do so. The way they work is akin to a proxy, using the IP address of the user, and they don't use a standard referrer, so I can't do a referrer or IP block.

Services.exe 100% CPU Usage

May 18, 2007

I have a Gbit server, Windows 2003 as the OS.
The server is primarily an FTP server, however once or twice a week I use it as a HTTP server as well.

During both FTP and HTTP usage the bandwidth usage is between 80-150 Mbits. However the server just becomes unstable if too much bandwidth is pushed out.

CPU usage is normally below 10% However when the server becomes unstable services.exe maxes out one CPU core. when that happens the server can barely push out 1-2 Mbits.

There are no blue screens or error reports, the only thing that is affected is the network side of things.

Initially I thought it was a problem with IIS, so I tried Apache instead but same problem. Even without the FTP server, if traffic goes too high with HTTP the server just crumbles.

Specs are as follows :

Core2duo 1.86 Ghz
2 GB RAM (Nearly always 1 GB free)
Windows 2003 Ent Edition
