Move A Site From One Host To Another Possibly Copy/ghost A VPS Over The Internet
Jan 31, 2009
I am trying to figure out a way to move a site from 1 host to another... The problem is that I don't just have a bunch of HTML files to move... I rented a VPS server for the last year, I believe it was CentOS 5 (OS). I setup several things on the server, MYSQL, FFMPEG, ETC...
I am now wanting to move to a dedicated server HOWEVER I DO NOT WANT TO START ALL OVER AGAIN. The site is rather busy and it is important to do the transition as fast as possible.
SO -- I have used Symantec Ghost before to "clone" a computer before. It basically takes an IMAGE of the entire HD and then you can paste/burn that image on a new HD and it makes a PERFECT copy of the original machine.
BUT - I have NO CLUE how to do this over the internet?

to get a copy of their entire site onto our servers.
The problem is that they have no backups, and their current host has denied them access to their account. (It's a long story.)
Rather then try and fight with their old host, I wonder if it's easier to just run some kind of "website copy" program and grab a copy of all pages and images, linked files, etc..
Their current website pages are served using an ASP database application, but the copy they need only has to work. It doesn't need to be dynamic, etc... as long as all the pages are there it's good.

In the time I've had this domain, it's nameserver IP's have changed a few times. Today I decided to move over my data from my VPS to my dedicated server, but also noticed that without change, when I did a NS lookup on the domain, it came back with this:
PHP Code:
Querying a.root-servers.net (198.41.0.4)... delegated Querying A.GTLD-SERVERS.NET (192.5.6.30)... delegated Querying ns1.x.com (208.53.160.1xx)... lame delegation Querying ns2.x.com (208.53.160.1xx)... lame delegation
Now what stumps me here is that these are wayyy old IP's I once had for my nameservers, and out of nowhere they've returned! I have not made ANY changes to my DNS settings at all.
About 1,5 months ago I transferred this domain from 1&1 to name.com
My registrar has no record of these domains as nameservers (I was using these nameservers back with 1&1, not with name.com, so that should already rule them out on the registrar side), on my server side everything is set up with the correct IP's (tinydns - '/var/tinydnds/root/data' shows NOTHING to do with these 'ghost' IP's), is there some where else that I should be looking? Remember, that this was resolving fine about 3 days ago, and then out of nowhere it started returning these lame delegations.

How can I move my site to a new hosting provider and have no downtime for my customers? (My website, webserver, and MySQL database appear to be online at all times).
I have my domain registered at godaddy.com
I have my current host at ************** with dedicated IP
I have my new host at Cartika with shared IP
The domain at godaddy points to:
ns1.**************.biz
ns2.**************.biz
Can I set up my new Cartika name servers to point to my old site's dedicated IP and set TTL at a very low level, and then change the domain at godaddy to point to the new Cartika nameservers?
This way as the change populates, everything is still pointed at my old hosting site.
Then I move my site over to Cartika, and once everything is tested and working, update the Cartika nameservers to point to the Cartika account?

This is not strictly a technical issue with our server as such, but this subforum still seemed most relevant. If not, please move the thread to a better suited one.
Bizarre problem: in the last 2-3 days, visitors from certain countries (France, Holland, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro) are having difficulties in reaching our website hosted on cari.net. However, other countries (USA, UK, Germany, Russia) don't seem to have this problem at all. The server itself is a-OK.
The website hosts an IPB forum. The problem is that every so often (very often), upon clicking on a link, the browser hangs on "connecting", and often times out and returns a Bad Request message. Sometimes, when a clicked link that's waiting is refreshed, it immediately loads the page up quickly, as if nothing is wrong.
We cannot call our hosting company, as it's really nothing to do with them, the server works perfectly, it's just that traffic from certain countries has difficulties to get through a certain level3.net node in the USA (that is where tracert usually breaks down, or gets through after several attemtps).

I've been a reseller for 7-8 years now. Just now getting out of the business.
I've "downsized" so that the only sites I have left are either my own little "experiments" or are sites belonging to local non-profits, where...because of a lack of expertise on their part, I'm basically the webmaster.
One of these sites belongs to my church. The site has been up-and-running for, oh, I think somewhere in the realm of 4-5 years now.
In the past two years, we've seen a large increase in the number of exploit attempts on this site. First, there's the never-ending flood of bots... creating user accounts in the forum software and image gallery software.
Then there are the actual hacks. Once, long ago, it was hacked by a pro-Muslim-extremist group. (But it wasn't alone. A ton of sites all over the net were hacked that day. Hacker through up the same pro-Muslim-extremist page on all of them.)
Then, more recently, somebody exploited a weakness in the image gallery software and uploaded their own little files onto the box. And one of those files was a script that apparently was designed to let them hack away at CPanel, trying to get in.
Anyways, I've been doing my best to keep the third-party software up-to-date. And I've customized some of that code according to recommendations on their websites in a way that "blocks" bots and certain functions that these people might like to use.
But staying viligant sure does take a lot of time and energy.
Tonight, I'm going to uninstall their forums permanently. Nobody's been using them in the past several months anyways. But I sure don't want to uninstall their image gallery software.
I guess I'm wondering if there's some hosting provider out there who maybe specializes in helping provide churches with extra security?

I just moved a website I took over to a new host. The programmer hard-coded the DB in. The old code refers to the mediatemple address:
mysql_connect("internal-db.s5363.gridserver.com", "db5363", "-removed-") or die ('I cannot connect to the database because: ' . mysql_error());
mysql_select_db("db5363_bb", $link)
how I can configure this for the new (CPanel) IGX Host server?

I'm in need of a simple IRC shell host.
We run an IRC bot service which interacts with our websites database, but currently the server does not support outgoing IRC connections.
I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good, stable host.
It simply needs to have SSH, PHP, and support outgoing IRC connections of course
It will be connecting to a remote SQL server, so SQL is not needed. I'm unsure about how much bandwidth I need, I'm sure its little to none. 50MB would probably suffice on webspace.

The data centre which I use, is moving all collacated servers to a brand new data centre next week, which will mean a two hour downtime for each of my servers and customer websites.
At the moment my servers utilise two nameservers on seperate servers and when the move happens all websites will be offline with an ugly error message to any visitors.
Does anyone know a good way to setup a page which would be displayed if the web server was down? I am using MS DNS.
My thoughts so far is
1. Setup a 3rd nameserver which is off site from the data centre.
2. Purcahse web hosting / vps for a month on a seperate hosting company
3. Set it up so that it accepts * to a specific IP address in IIS or apache
4. I create an index.php script which gets the host header value sent i.e. [url]and the page then displays a nice maintenace i.e
"We are sorry joeblogs.com is currently down for maintenace, we will be back online shortly".
I think my main question is do I need to setup a 2nd www record in DNS for each site and how do I ensure the 2nd dns (backup record) only gets used when the first website / server is down.

how to move my web sites from one host to another?
I believe my new host will happily do so.. and, I'd really like to know how to do it myself.
Two of the sites have blogs with lots of posts on them.
If you know of any video tutorials, I'd appreciate it.
I've watched one on backing up the site to "remote ftp server". I do not know what that means and have not been able to find a description/definition.

I'm moving a site to a new host. So far everything went well: site moved, database restored, domain transferred.. but now I'm facing the fact "how to move the email account in a way the users can keep all their mails and contacts?"
At this moment, the mail account is still with NetFirms and they use NetFirms Webmail. The new host is using Squirrel Mail, Webmail or RoundCube (the user can select either one of these).
Do i need to backup, move and restore all the mails accounts? Or do the users need to backup all their mails (let's say with Outlook Express)? Or is there another way to do this?

I'm thinking about moving an account with one main domain and a bunch of addons from one cpanel host to another, using a whole site backup .tar.gz file. SSH does not appear to be an option at this point.
I just extracted the tar.gz to a local pc to get a look at what's in it. It has these 12 folders: bandwidth, cp, cron, dnszones, logs, meta, mysql, resellerconfig, userdata, va, vad, vf. Below these folders are also 14 unfoldered files, ranging from "addons" to "version."
So, will this work?
1. Does this mean the domains and all the addons will be set up with their original user names, passwords, and email accounts with all the same passwords, if I move everything to the right location? Will all the email accounts I've set up in my email client software work just as they do now with the current host?
2. How can I know where all these uploaded folders and files have to be moved once they're there?
3. Can I just upload the extracted contents to one location, or do I have to upload the unextracted tar.gz to a server, extract there, then move the contents wherever they need to be moved (but I don't know where things need to be moved now)?

Do I change the Minimum TTL which is currently 86400?
Do I change the TTL for each A record which are currently 14400?
Do I change the nameservers in the DNS record from what they are now to the new host nameservers?

I want to purchase a domain and also move it to a paid host. I am not really technically knowledgeable to do this. Have visited a few step by step guides but find them quite confusing.
guide to do the move/transfer of the blog, more for a beginner? And by the way is it simple to do or actually more for a professional?

with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?
Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?
Is it allowed for instance to register my domain name with 1&1 and host my site with godaddy?

one of my clients told me he tried to send an email to somebody and he receives this error:
The addresses to which the message has not yet been delivered are:
a.......u@a.......t.ro
Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<a.......r@i.....s.ro>:
host mail.a.....t.ro [82.77.203.xx]: 451 4.1.8 Possibly forged hostname for 67.222.136.xx
No action is required on your part. Delivery attempts will continue for some time, and this warning may be repeated at intervals if the message remains undelivered. Eventually the mail delivery software will give up, and when that happens, the message will be returned to you.
Last message received on 17.06.2009 at 16:10
Any ideea what might be? he's having this problem only when tries to send an email to that email address, and I'm not sure if it's a problem on our server or on their server

I installed Oracle via aptitude on Ubuntu.
Everytime I try to access a PHP script with Oracle on it, I get this message:
Quote:
Warning: oci_connect() [function.oci-connect]: OCIEnvNlsCreate() failed. There is something wrong with your system - please check that ORACLE_HOME is set and points to the right directory in /path/to/file.php on line 215
This was on PHP 5.
In my attempts to resolve this problem, here is what I did.
I tried the following with oracle-xe running and while it had been stopped:
Code:
$ . /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/oracle_env.sh
and I saw this message:
Quote:
/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/nls_lang.sh: 114: [[: not found
/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/nls_lang.sh: 114: [[: not found
and here is /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/nls_lang.sh:
Code:
103 # Detertmine the LANGUAGE_TERRITORY part of NLS_LANG
104 # we derive it from the current locale by inspecting the LC_ALL and
105 # the LANG environment variable. Other LC_* environment variables
106 # are not inspected.
107 #
108 if [[ -n "$LC_ALL" ]]; then
109 locale=$LC_ALL
110 elif [[ -n "$LANG" ]]; then
111 locale=$LANG
112 else
113 locale=
114 fi
I then opened /etc/bash.bashrc and
tried adding this to the bottom:
Code:
LC_ALL='en_GB'
export LC_ALL
and sourced it but that did not work so I replaced it with this:
Code:
LC_ALL='C'
export LC_ALL
and sourced it but still no luck.
Does anyone know how I could sort this out?

My server running mailenable is possibly sending out spam because ive had a returned mail saying my IP is on a blacklist at CBL.
IP Address 64.X.X.10 was found in the CBL.
It was detected at 2007-02-17 13:00 GMT (+/- 30 minutes), approximately 5 days, 5 hours, 30 minutes ago.
However when i checked my smtp and pop logs i only see small ammounts of mail thats been delivered.

We also made some automated migration of few domains/sites using Web Host Manager's Copy an account from another server feature.
All the files and other settings were properly transferred from old server to new server, but only the mysql database is not visible on new server. I am unsure if the same got copied to new server.

I'm going to be extremely blunt and start off that although I'm not an unintelligent person, I'm very dumb when it comes to hosting and the lingo. So I would really appreciate the "Hosting for Dummies" version to find a good host
The closest I can show in what I am building with my partner is HERE (which claims to have had 90Million pageviews/month last year) Just basically a teen game and graphic site. It will be mostly flash games, php, various other scripts and forums.
I'm confident in saying they don't use shared hosting at least. Though what it is exactly I don't know. There is no way I'd get a dedicated server to begin with till we need it. I'm not sure what else a site like this requires (perhaps unlimited mySQL?) for a shared hosting plan. I was looking at HostMonster, Hostgator and Bluehost. I need good customer support for sure, I've had too many crap hosts in the past. I also need multiple domains (4-5)
In sum, does the shared hosting even matter at this point, or should I come back when we're in need of dedicated? I'm guessing cp usage will be the first to give out?
