Real World Testing

Feb 25, 2007

We have recently moved to a new datacenter and I was wondering if anyone on these forums could provide their experiences with "real-world" testing.

Upon move-in, we had a few issues. Obviously now the executives in the organization I work for are looking for justification for moving to the new colo.

software, or an online service that will stress test our current setup? Obviously I have MRTG, Awstats, and a few other of the most well known polling packages installed and working correctly, but what does everyone else use for stress testing?

Apache :: How To Access Server From Outside World

Aug 16, 2014

I have a local network with modem, router, and several computers either Cat5 to router or via wireless. Router is Cisco Linksys E4200. The internal IP for this router would be 192.168.1.1.One of the computers has Ubuntu Server 14.04 (32-bit) and Apache 2 installed, and this is hardwired (Cat5) to the router. This computer also has a STATIC IP address that we will call 192.168.1.100. my Windows 7 Ultimate computer, I can open a browser and type "192.168.1.100" and the Apache 2 Ubuntu Default Page will pop up telling me that "It works!".

I have the Apache server working since I can access from within my LAN.My problem is to get it to show me the same "It Works!" when I try to access from the Internet.I got my 'external IP' address by simply going to whatismyip.com, and I can also see it from within my router settings.

The next thing I did was to setup Port Forwarding inside the router, to point say 50505 to 192.168.1.100. I've tried lots of port numbers.I cannot see my Apache 2 Default page by typing in my browser "98.180.213.110:50505", for example. This assumes 98.180.213.110 is my external IP and 50505 is the port I am forwarding.

I've tried disabling the IP4 firewall within the router, and even the "anonymous" filter request setting.I can find my web-server via browser in-house, but I cannot access from my external IP as if I were at a different location.

Apache And Mod_rewrite

Mar 29, 2009

So I've setup a server heres the spec provided by Webmin

Operating systemUbuntu Linux 8.10

Webmin version1.470

Time on systemSun Mar 29 18:56:12 2009

Kernel and CPULinux 2.6.27-11-server on i686

System uptime5 days, 19 hours, 42 minutes

I'm struggling with mod_rewrite their seems to be no such thing...

Its not mentioned in the apache2.conf or httpd.conf, httpd.conf was blank previously but I added in certain things to get php working but I cannot get mod_rewrite working, which brings the question forward what else am i missing?

I started out with the aim of blocking the ability of viewing directories.

Quote:

Loaded Modules core mod_log_config mod_logio prefork http_core mod_so mod_alias mod_auth_basic mod_authn_file mod_authz_default mod_authz_groupfile mod_authz_host mod_authz_user mod_autoindex mod_cgi mod_deflate mod_dir mod_env mod_mime mod_negotiation mod_php5 mod_setenvif mod_status mod_vhost_alias

So how can I go about getting mod_rewrite setup and/or what ever else I'm missing that I might find essential later on once I have everything setup?

Apache 2.2.3 And Mod_rewrite / Cgi Script Conflict

Mar 19, 2008

I recently upgraded my server and it is using Apache 2.2.3. I have all the same server directives as before when I was using an early version of Apache 2. The problem is that when I have RewriteEngine On, my cgi scripts generate a forbidden error. If I comment out that line, they go back to working again.

How To Make Mod_rewrite Work On New Apache Server

Dec 8, 2006

we've been running our software on apache 1.3 for years with no problems. We have a new server running apache2 and now none of our mod_rewrite works. Is there something extra that needs to be done with apache 2 to get mod_rewrite working? The module is definitely loaded (first thing I checked). If we turn on allowOverride from None to All in the httpd.conf we get completely blank pages. Our regular php pages work fine with allowoverride set to none, but they all break when it is set to all. Please help. This is the second time we have run into this on apache 2 servers.

VPS To Grow And Learn On

Oct 31, 2007

I was wondering if anybody had a suggestion of what to look for in a VPS that I could use to learn and grow on. I generated a decent-sized web application (PHP5/MySQL) and I'm looking to grow in userbase and features.

I started it on Lunarpages shared hosting (which was a nightmare) before realizing I needed something a little better. I ended up switching over to WestHost and I've been very happy with them for a few years now. Though some may argue it's not a "true" VPS, it's done everything I wanted it to do so far and been quite reliable. It was a great stepping stone.

My site has been growing, as have my service plans, budget, and aspirations. I like to learn by getting my hands dirty, and I wanted to learn some of the more advanced aspects of running a webserver, so I'm in the market for a VPS with more freedom.

What VPS features or aspects should I keep an eye out for if I'm looking to both learn about the server and expand (aka do development work) at the same time? Benchmarks, RAM and CPU? Upgradability, managed and good support? CPanel, DA, Plesk? Snazzy logos and plan names?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: High IO By Sa-learn / Spamtrain

Mar 12, 2015

at 6 in the morning sa-learn / spamtrain starts to learn from junk mails. This causes high load on the system und takes about 2-3 hours. Is there any way to change the time to some hours earlier to avoid high load in office hours?

nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1
... to solve the issue, that it didn't seem to have any effect to your CPU/IO usage. Please try as well the full path, if you experience issues, as for example:

/usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1. Please make sure, that "nice" and "ionice" are located at the given paths and don't just copy&paste the suggestion with the whole path - usage ( you could use "locate nice" / "locate ionice" to verify the paths ).

You asked as well for a different execution time, to avoid high usage during office hours. I would recommend to try several spamtrain - cronjobs, which you might setup with

For Plesk 11 you would use:

nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f execute-spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1
/usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f execute-spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

For Plesk 12 you would use:
nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f ExecuteSpamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1 /usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f ExecuteSpamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

or use the direct command with: nice -n 19 ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1/usr/bin/ nice -n 19 /usr/bin/ionice -c2 -n7 /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/spamtrain >/dev/null 2>&1

If you still would like to exclude one of the daily DailyMaintenance - cronjobs from your "50plesk-daily" script, you have to modify the line /usr/local/ psa/ bin/ sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php >/dev/null 2>&1

to all different parts like:
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name1
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name2
/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -f Plesk-COMMAND-name3

where you have to leave out the commands, which should not be executed daily. ( Please see the current Plesk-commands for the DailyMaintenance - script with "/usr/local/psa/bin/sw-engine-pleskrun /usr/local/psa/admin/plib/DailyMaintainance/script.php -l" and be aware that Plesk 11 and Plesk 12 have different commands! )

From time to time, it is wise to clean up the spamassassin - database ( as you already found out with the linked forum-thread), but I would recommend a 6-month-cronjob and not a monthly one. that spamtraining with spamassassin can be very time investing and you should try out addons, filters and rules to find the most efficient configuration for each, unique server - unfortunately there is no "best-for-all" solution.

Host Once - Where In The World Is My Server?

Sep 30, 2008

I have been running a dedicated server for years, first with Carolina Online, who then sold it to HostOnce.

Today at around 6PM my server, that was working fine and I was actively working on all day, suddenly disappears off the Internet.

I go to Host Once's ticket system, and they have a message up that they moved their servers from NC to NJ, that all the servers were upgraded to Windows 2003, and that they would be very busy with the migration, don't submit multiple tickets. (Host Once seems to mostly have reseller hosting accounts, not many dedicated servers.)

I start pinging IP addresses and everything in my server's IP block is gone (the furthest a tracert goes is 64.70.48.3 - everything under that is gone.)

This is bad.

I'm worried that they may have bought new boxes in NJ for their reseller accounts, transferred up the data, and abandoned the old boxes in NC ... is this something they might do?

Also worried that the block of IPs their old servers were on may have somehow been reassigned... can this happen?

In any case, waiting to hear back on my ticket but looking for advice. Does anyone know the datacenter Carolina Online / Host Once used in Lumberton, NC? Want to start tracking it down if my box may have been left behind.... Any other insight on what in the world they might be doing / what happenned here?

100Mbit+ Unmetered - Anywhere In The World

Jun 22, 2008

Can someone give me a good list of providers like fdc, ovh, etc.

Bandwidth quality not much of an issue, quantity means more than quality to us, cogent only networks are even acceptable

We need more than one, as we need servers all over the world.

Edit: 100Mbit with unlimited or VERY high bandwith limits minimum.

Edit 2: Looking for something similar to fdc and ovh in price if possible. Going over 500/mo is pushing the budget on these, although specs do need to be taken into consideration.
