Jailtime.org Xen Images
Has anyone here gotten any of the Xen images from jailtime.org to work on CentOS? I've figured out what the heck I'm doing since my last question [url], but they still won't boot. And the more I Google it, the more people I find asking the same questions.
It looks like they're depending on a bunch of non-standard images in their initrd, and, unless we have some of these unknown modules, the darned thing won't boot. Mine ends up failing like this:

I am hosting two websites with hosting comapny - [url] They provide hosting for as low as $1 per month and this was the reason I thought to host with them just like thousands of other users who have hosted with them. I was stunned to see that my domains hosted with them has doorway subdomains with adverisements and malware. I checked my cpanel and amazingly there were actually no sub domains in cpanel. Those subdomains were actually created secretly through DNS entries by 3ix.org so that they can serve advertisements and malwares without being caught by HOSTING USERS. So I did a Reverse DNS lookup and found that all domains hosted by them are suffering from the same issue. They are cheating their users and now all the sites hosted with them are in danger as this will be considered as spam by Search engines and all sites can be banned anytime. I would strictly advice to stay away from this web hosting company....

Cubichost.org Review
Day 1/2 - 18th August 2009. Signed up to VPS Mini with discount after reading an advert here. First problem on the first day, the IP and server information they gave me wouldnt work. "it was a routing issue, it was routing to another server. We fixed this and it should be working for you. " This was fixed in ~24 hours, and then I had access. I struggled with the limited RAM, and OS, so I changed to Ubuntu and queried about cost to change RAM amount - decided not to and just used apache to run 4 websites. Day 3 - 21st August 2009 System goes down, "Seemed like your ssh was not running; rebooted your vps now it looks good.", not quite sure on this - as I am quite experienced with *nix, and I dont see why "it wasnt running" but apache was. I suspect there was some routing problems somewhere, but eitherway, it was back up after approx 6 hours of non-ssh downtime. Day 11 - 29th August 2009 Had some issues in the days previous - saw some threads here on WHT. Still decided to upgrade to premium - as was going to be running a demanding MySQL server. Payment taken on 4th September for upgrade, and all was OK! Day ?? - 19th-21st (?) September 2009 Servers all went down, cubic host lost their IP range. Thread on forums somewhere about it. new IP allocation email received on ~24th, 2 days downtime, host unreachable. October 3rd 2009 My VPS vanishes completely, along with all the data. IP resolves to a new server, with fresh apache install. I am unable to log into root. Their billing system had "messed up" during my upgrade: Hey, The billing system say invoice #196 which was issued on 04/09/2009 is unpaid so the system automatically terminated your VPS after a period of non payment. I will confer with my partner that this invoice was in fact paid and will re activate your account. Regards, Gray F. CubicHost.org They responded by saying my VPS had been setup again I created your VPS manually. And for the inconvenience can give you 2 months from this date FREE. Then you will not get an invoice until December 2nd But, sadly, no backups had been kept on their end, and none of my websites or data was recoverable. I was digging around and couldn't find any backups anywhere. The billing system did a good job of terminating, unfortunately. What I could do is provide you hypervm panel access where you are able to configure backups and such. They managed to give me ~7 days downtime with no-proactive communication (all communication was my-end first noticing service was down), and then deleted all my data due to "a billing issue". They finally, charged me $5 after my account was closed, for what I am not quite sure, but I dont fancy the effort of chasing.

3ix.org - What A Disappointment!
A few words of warning. I came across 3ix by googling the net. Compared it to a few others and thought, hey, they're cheap. I'll host my site with them. They offer a US $ 1 dollar package (minimum 6 months subscription) for a small site and US $ 3 package (minimum 6 months subscription). I chose the US $ 3 a month subscription which equals US $ 18 a month. The reason I chose the $3 package over the $1 package is because I was and still am pretty cluelesss as to how to design my site and the $3 deal came with a site builder called "Click Be" and templates. Nice templates. the only problem I could neither edit existing buttons in the menu nor remove them. I e-mailed 3ix.org about the problem and got no answer. I visited Click Be's authors, a company in the Nehterlands and indeed on their forum I discovered that others were discussing and complaining about the same problems they had with Click Be. A few replies as well from the Click Be authors on that same forum confirming that indeed the buttons in the menu can neither be edited nor removed and that they're working on a newer version of Click Be site builder. Fair enough. however, this wasn't described anywhere on 3ix's site and none of 3ix sales staff had told me about this flaw. 3ix's site builder Click Be was touted as the latest and most powerful site builder on the net. they also advertise money back guaranteed within 2 weeks if not satisfied. I have e-mailed them at least 5 times before the 14-day trial period ended asking them to either fix the problem or arrange for a refund. Never heard from them again. Cheap does not necessarily mean good. I was duped by 3ix.org. Buyers beware!

Review: Maximum-Hosting.org - Horrific Experience
this is my experience with Maximum-Hosting.org. I went there for the low prices to startup my Shoutcast station. At $3 a month, it sounded too good to be true. I got my service, and the owner, seemed like a nice guy. He was very helpful, and was eager to help me get started. This was back in March. The first half of my stent there was great, however, in the last half, downtimes and even a data loss was getting on my nerves. I saw some really personal issues and arguments in the IRC server about the owner and staff, and even some back talk and really personal stuff that I wish I never had heard. Because of the downtime, the owner did provide me with some free service and features. In these times, I was itching to leave, but the owner lured me back in with something better. In this time, the service was 'okay', no real big complaints, I was even promoted to an IRCop, on the server. Four things happened. 1) There was an incident in the chatroom with a regular joke we have done may times was taken really the wrong way. (I did not use my IRCop powers when this happened) 2) After a long outage (last night from 'this' post date), I was the only human on the irc server. In order for me to ask the owner what happened, I silenced a eggdrop bot by banning it from the main room. This was so I can get a new message notification when a real person enters the room. The bot posted every 2min, and it was at 2am in the morning. 3) I actually found a pretty big security hole in the control panel, the owner thanked me yesterday, and was furious the next. 4) because of the top three things, the owner basically got extremely mad and took away my IRCops. Those 4 things basically were the last pieces of trash I could take. Yes, I forgot to unban the bot I mentioned in #2, but is that a good reason to get me out? Tonight, after a somewhat heated discussion with the owner, my account was instantly closed, all http/ftp pipes closed. I am very lucky I saw the owner start to fall into this cycle he seems to do, I had a full backup of the space I had. In a nut shell, I would highly advise people NOT to use Maximum-Hosting. If you want low prices, frequent downtime, and the possibility your data could be gone in an instant, this is the host for you! I can only hope no one else falls into the nightmare I have had to put up with for cheap hosting.

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

I'm trying to do is wget images, however, i'm not sure how to do it 100% right... what ive got is a index.html page that has images(thmubs) that link to the full size images. how do i grab the full size images? Can't Seems To Upload Images
I have uploaded my site through FTP. Everything seems to be showing except the /images files. Images in .gif and .jpg ain't showing up. The error I get is "The image "image URL" cannot be displaying, because it contains error" It's weird because the image is uploaded on the ftp in images folder but for some weird reason it's not showing up.

Preventing Hotlinking Of Images
The images I am trying to block are on page generated by a simple PHP script on my server. The offender has replicated what I am doing with ASP on their server. They are hotlinking to my images for the resulting page. They left my website's name on them, so they must think that giving credit is enough. I'm going to be contacting them to stop but I also want to see if there is a way for me to prevent it from happening in the first place. I tried mod_rewrite... Code: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^[url].*$ [NC] RewriteRule .(gif|jpg)$ - [F] I know mod_rewrite works on my server because I've been using it for some other things. However, whenever I enable the above code (add it to the directives and restart apache - have also tried just putting it in a .htaccess file in the appropriate directory), I end up with images still being allowed on my domain and the other domain I'm trying to stop from using my images. Do you think it could have to do with an absent referrer? I read that the code doesn't work if the referrer is blank. What else would cause this not to work? Obviously the domain would have to be correct, but it doesn't block from my domain OR the offending domain. Images Dissapearing Randomly
I am creating a web application, nothing spectacular just something to display content. After completing a long night of coding, I uploaded my files to my server and checked to make sure everything was functioning correctly. Everything seemed fine so I went to bed. The next morning, to my surprise, all my images had dissapeared! Well not all of them, just the ones being displayed through the PHP script. (coincidentally, these images where all in the same directory...) Of course the first thought that went through my mind was "scripting error". Which surprised me, since everything worked perfectly the night before. I checked and double checked everything, and I couldn't find anything wrong. I checked the permissions on the directory holding the images and they appeared correct (755). So, to locate the problem I decided to strip out all the variables and create a test page that had only the SQL query, and a print to output the <img> code. Still nothing! So I decided to just go the HTML route and create a test file that held only the <img> code, no PHP involved... nothing. The images are on the server. I double checked... if you right click > view image, it shows up. Then if you go back to the "test" page and refresh the image is there... however, it does not appear when you first load the page, or it appears and then immediately dissapears. I contacted my host about the issue, and their first response said: Quote: Dear customer, The images are there if you login through plesk control panel and go to File Manager under your domain you can find the pictures and see them.But some of them are not opening under your website. Best Regards Honestly... are you kidding me? Reiterating my question doesn't constitute as an answer. And they call themselves "engineers"... Seeing as it appears to only be affecting one directory (and possibly only JPG images...? Have a look at the test pages above), I believe it might be a permissions issue.

Serve Images From A Different Location Based On IP
We have a major chunk of our traffic coming in from Asia and our servers are in the US. The latency is an issue which we have sorted out by ensuring we use Amazon's cloudfront CDN atleast for the static images. Now while this is working rather well, we are now wanting to experiment and see if we could put up an additional image server in our country to serve IPs from that specific range. In case the local image server goes down, the amazon cloudfront setup should be used. What are the best options for achieving this with the least amount of latency for the users?

Hosting The Images For My Website On Photobucket
I use 34SP to host my website, and the package which I use allows me 2000MB of traffic a month. If every image that I use on my website (including the logo and background image) is hosted on photobucket instead of by the 34SP server, does this mean that the data received from photobucket won't count against my monthly traffic allowance? And is this a reliable way of doing things? I guess it's less reliable than having all the images on the same server, but how often is this likely to go wrong?

Actual Images And Contents Do Not Show Up
i have to reload a page several times. at least once. the templates show up fine, but the actual images and contents do not show up unless i reload the page....this is evident during peak hours but not during normal hours..... i've done tracert, no lost packets.

Advantages Of Using A Separate Host For Images
I'm starting to see this, or maybe it's always existed, but it seems like bigger sites are hosting their images on external servers. I've even seen some sites use Flickr as the host for all of their images. I guess for Flickr that means you have a guarenteed image CMS, but I really don't see that as why Flickr was created. I'm sure there are bandwidth advantages, and maybe that's the main reason. Is there a point where the traffic gets so high that moving images off site would improve load times and sever loads? Is it a worthwhile endeavor for smaller sites? I'm curious to see what the thoughts are on this trend.

Sourcing Images For My Blog And Copyright
first time building a website, and was thinking about setting up a blog type website similar to the likes of engadget etc.... However I'm curious as to how I can source images and how copyright relates to a blog news site. Obviously with the quick nature I would be posting like other news sites I doubt there would be time to email the owner of a site and ask for permission and await a response. So maybe theres a loop hole in regards to blog news sites for permission?

Having An Images HTTPD Server Only: Lighthttpd
For my website I have a server which houses all of my gallery IMAGES of my user profiles. There are over 100,000 images on the server and it's only purpose is to provide those images with http. However, the http server also has PHP installed, and it's only purpose is for uploading new images. Therefore users eventually get redirected to the images server where they can upload the image. This all works, but in the future I want to remove the PHP side to the server. I also want to change the whole server program from Apache to Lighthttpd. This is because, lighthttp is a very low overhead web server program, but also provides very little features. So I was wondering, if I was to do so, and since PHP is not installed, then I would have to make the upload pages on the main http server (which has PHP and Apache). Then I would have to make the main server send the uploaded image to the the lighthttp server via some sort of the scp system call, via PHP. I know that this IS possible, but when it comes down to security holes and so on, would this method really be worth it? Generally I want to have the lighthttp setup only because it eliminates having to have any dynamic content. Obviously this can also be done with apache (removing dyanmic content), but lighthttp may be more efficient for static content.

Cache The Dynamic Url (images)
I've got an application (java web ) tha dynamically creats images ( with dynamic url - ...tab&vi=nia&h=24&ds=bottom&fn...) - like thumbnails,icons ect. The think I'm trying to deal with is to force caching theese images by a browser. When the application starts the server gets images and shows code 200 ( and this images apppers in web browser cache), but after reloding or simply viewing the images from the cache url the server shows again code 200. I'd like to have code 304 - not modified - like when browser gets an image from cache. The dynamic url for image is being created only once - when the appication starts, and after that it stays unchanged, but I still can't force use the cached images - like when it is a static url - .../image.jpg.

SuPHP - 600 Permissions Mess Up Css/images
I'm using suphp to secure a shared web hosting server and am confused about one issue I'm having. It is my understanding that using suphp, you should be able to chmod 755 all directories and chmod 600 all files since apache runs the .php files as the user. However, when I chmod 600 all files, the formatting of the sites gets messed up. It loses all css and if you try to view image files in the browser you get a permission denied error. Why is that? As a temporary solution, I can chmod 644 all files and then 600 only sensitive files like config files (wp-config.php for WordPress for example), but I'd rather just chmod 600 everything. Can anyone explain why 600 doesn't work? .htaccess & Java Applet Trouble Displaying Images
I have a java applet that displays (local)images. Serve 1 000 000 Images From One Directory
I plan to build huge image gallery, using lighttpd to server these images. It would be easiest for me to have all these files (more than 1 000 000) in one directory? Is it ok? I have no idea, if this can cause any problems. Should I part my files into several directories, does it make serving better/faster?

OS On Xen
i had set my mind on trying out xen but then problems accured... had decided to use centos, and thought that it would work. but it wont accept it. is redhat, suse and debian the only supportet linux distro´s with xen? or is there someway to have centos work with it? would prefer not having to use a fortune on an OS license, that was the why I choose centos in the first place

I'm looking to purchase hardware to specifically run Xen.. What is the best hardware to run Xen? Will the new Intel Xeon (Woodcrest) work? If not then what would you recommend? AMD? If you want to recommend specific models please recommend supermicro MBs.

Xen Using More Memory
I previuosly have a forum hosted on a VPS with a 512 MB RAM (OpenVZ) and at that time it was only using 300MB of ram during peak time but the server was always down due to harware failures so I move to a new host this time Using Xen with a 768 RAM now it is using all the RAM available which is double the ram that it uses before. Is it really normal for a XEN vps to consume more memory than on a VPS using OpenVZ?

I'm playing around with a test server, install Xen on a Centos 5 box. [url] I've tried two methods to create a vm. virt-install and virt-install -x "ip=xxx.xxx.70.212 gateway=xxx.xxx.70.211 subnet=255.255.255.248" If I do virt-install, it asks me this: (first screenshot). I have no idea what to put it. I have setup a xen vps and installed elastix which is an open source Server software that brings together IP PBX, email, IM, faxing and collaboration functionality. The installation was followed by reboot of the xen VPS. However errors were reported during reboot and the xen vps never got powered on.

What is the differance between Xen and XenServer? Is it correct in saying XenServer is a commercial product with advance features compared to Xen though both are hypervisor based VM. Also i saw this article [url] I always thought hypervisor based VM default OS was a custom OS built within the product but the article suggests that you can install XEN on most linux distro or i am missing something here... does this also apply to XenServer

I've a question with XEN VPS. I rented vps with sweden provider and its 20 GB HD and 256MB memory. The setup isnt bad, done within 1 day. I check inside the vps and its XEN VPS. I tried "top" command and wow, I am supprised !! here what I saw Mem: 262320k total, 208708k used, 53612k free, 54680k buffers isnt it funny ? 50MB++ left(not yet run anything, no panel running too). is it normal ? I have other vps running inside virtuozzo, and got 192 MB inside. even its running so many process inside(about 15) that takes about 5-10MB each, its still have more left than XEN. Xen Using Too Much Memory
I noticed that, VPS with Xen technology, are using up far more memory than others? Lets say, I usually use about 300mb of ram in a VPS with openvz, but VPS with xen, with the same usage, is using about 820mb of ram. Even without running anything...after a fresh install of centos 5, with only few OS processes, its using around 170mb of ram already. Is this so with Xen? The expected ram usage with Xen? Or am I missing something?
