Is There A VPS Hosting Provider Allowing Customized Xen Image Upload
Sep 2, 2007
I am a application/systems developer looking for a VPS hosting provider that would allow me upload a customized xen image that I could use as a template for additional VPSs.
Does anyone know of a hosting provider that could do this type of thing?

I was just working on some concepts for image upload security features and wanted some others opinions. Would the below be worth doing to not have to deal with the 777 or even 775 phpsu issue(s)?
- What about loading the images into a db and logging the upload. Then having a cron or a daemon move the file to a location under the owner (user) and then delete the file out of the db.
Pros:
- Images would be loaded and displayed from under the user of the site making no 777 issues.
Con:
- Mass use of db could cause crashes?
- Would have to write front end to know if the file was in db or in the folder location

Currently I am hosted with Aquarius Storage, who are a fantastic company and I will be posting a review of them soon, but however that is not my point. Due to the recent tragedy of the HyperVM creator committing suicide, I will have to pay more because AQ is switching to Virtuozzo. Because I simply run a somewhat large, growing blog, paying 36$ per month is kind of outrageous.
To make things short, I need a good host, that was superb uptime, and is optimized for a WordPress blog that gets around ~5k uniques, ~30k pagehits, ~100k spider hits per month. (all figures are growing, of course), and for the site to be optimized to be speedy fast.

This is one of my thoughts and a valid one based on my own experience.
One of the problems with shared hosting account that comes with multiple domain/web hosting, is that all the hosted domains shared one single cpanel and one root directory where all the addon domains directories and files are all jammed up together with the maindomain's directories and files.
Notably is some php scripted sites running on addon domains were unable to function effectively. One such example is using imagevue - a photo slideshow/gallery script. The problem of no photos or photos unable to load/show when the site is called directly from the addon domain [url]
However, when accessed through the maindomain [url] it has no such problem and the photos showed up.
With the above incident and having tried on three other different webhosts, it's clear that something has to be done or otherwise, having multiple domain hosting has no real benefits if you consider the above matters.
As such, the only solution I can think of is to install whm on our shared hosting account so that we can have each added domain to have its own independent cpanel.
So long as we are not doing any reselling activities, there is no reason for the webhost to object or refused.
If your webhost is genuinely care about you and truly to provide an enhanced and efficient webhosting experience, then whm is one way to overcome any shortcomings from existing facility of using a single cpanel for all your multiple addon domains.
Of course, another alternative is to use subdomains from the main domain and redirect all your addon domain sites to the subdomains. That would really defeat the purpose of having addon domains in the first place. Also, why should we? since the hosting account is for multiple domain hosting.
Webhosts offering so-called unlimited domain hosting or limited multiple domain hosting on a single cpanel, should review the existing known issues such as the one mentioned above, and consider using whm to overcome such issues, thus truly provide a pleasant and effective multiple domain web hosting experience to its customers.
Webhosts should tweak and enhance its existing features/softwares/hardwares to improve the overall webhosting services.

I recently got webhosting with godaddy which I have now decided was a bad choice. Its "user friendly" model makes it harder. My main problem at the moment is loading forum php script and such I have to have my permission changed which i know how to do but it wont let me through ftp or godaddy's filemanager (though it says you can). *Does someone know how to do this on godaddy **or what hosting do you recommend for: ....

I have developed website which will allow user to upload 1-2 photos and also allow to see other users photo and rate them. For this I have planned to go for VPS. I am also thinking of another alternative of using image hosting service, where I will keep all user photos on image hosting server and embed links given by image server in my webpage.
Now my question is.
1) Using image hosting is faster(respone time for each user) than VPS?
2) How exactly using image hosting works. when user request web page from my server, will my server go and fetch entire image from image server and then send final result to user brower?

where I can host images for my site. It will be thousands of smaller image like 5k - 30k. I am looking at free sites like imageshak. They say in their terms of service that I can host images for my site as long as I don't host all my images. So do you think that I could put like 20 thousand images on their site? These images would not get accessed too much so it won't slam their servers or anything.

My goal is to block hotlinking of fullsize images and display a image when they attempt it... but allow clickable thumbnails to be shown. For some reason the following isn't working...
My htaccess looks like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /images
#Allow if it's not from another website
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^[url]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^[url]
#Allow if it's the hotlink.gif
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} hotlink.gif [NC,OR]
#Pass through thumbnails or hightlights as-is
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .thumb.jpg$ [NC,OR]
#Return an anti-hotlink gif in place of any visual media
RewriteRule .*.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ css/images/hotlink.gif [R,L,NC]

We have an image hosting project, which uses ~5Tb/mo,
Currently we are running it on Pentium D 2,8GHz CPU (Dual Core), 1Gb RAM, 2×160Gb 7200rpm IDE HDD for ~170$/mo.
We don't need much better hardware, but need some good hdds (IDE sucks) + RAID.
Stats for 20.03.08-30.03.08 (10 days) - incoming: 35 Gb, outgoing: 1.3 Tb
So it's about ~4 Tb/mo. And we want 5-6Tb for a reserve.
Keyweb doesn't allow image hosting on their servers
Best choice is OVH, but I'm not in Germany..

i have plan to build a image hosting. I will build a site using script like this notinportland.com . I need some advise.
I trust i will get about 7k-10k page view everyday , may be 1k-2k unique visitor, just see image on my site, not direct link.
- Of course, i will start with shared hosting. But in future, do i need to updrage vps or server ?
- Does Image hosting make server load highly, using more resource on server?
- All images is legal and have adult content, of course sometime it will have some illegal image ( will be banned and deleted )? Can HPs will allow?

I own a social network generating over 50 million page views a month. Currently, I use only one massive server. I want to add in a new server just for image serving, as my current server is killing me with high bandwidth costs.
Server A runs the website and the logic
Server B runs runs the images
What would be a good architecture between the two servers, given that they ARE NOT IN THE SAME hosting infrastructure (SoftLayer is not a great option if you want alot of bandwidth)
If a user changes his photo on Server A which runs the site, somehow Server B must be notified and gets a hold of the new image..... what would be the most technically feasible and optimum way to achieve this?

What's the best thing to go with? Is it a VPS or a Dedi?
I am currently on a shared package with a US company. However, I'd like to bring the site into the UK hosting domain, and perhaps closer to where I live.
Location in the UK isn't important.
What's the best thing to go with? VPS or Dedi? Or to remain on my US shared?
Currently at about 35GB bandwidth for this month. And the site's only been open 2 months. So will need over 200GB a month with room to expand.
And about 50GB space minimum if possible... :-/

I have a dedicated that is oversized for the task (Q6600, 8gig RAM, Sata Raid-10 array), which is running a medium/small vBulletin site.
I have thought about providing free image hosting for the members, so I could have 100-300 people hosting sig images and other graphics on the server, which they in turn would link into forums and other places which could create quite a few requests for those graphics.
Is there anyway to quantify what type of load this static, image hosting would create?
The server currently is typically around .05 to .1 server load with nearly flatlined CPU's.

I have a website built with asp .Net with MS SQL database. The website have some pages that uploads images and files in some folders.
I have tried GoDaddy shared Windows hosting. But they don't seem to allow file upload using a script.
Then I tried GoDaddy Virtual Dedicated. The tech guy told me MS SQL would be part of the hosting. Later I find he lied, there is no MS SQL as part of it.
I am trying to find an affordable hosting that has MS SQL and also allows file upload using script.

Lets say you're a customer looking for web hosting, but do have technical experience - you know, you develop your own websites, you've had experience in this sort of thing before.
What if you came across a provider who seemed to offer a good service, they're high quality, they can host your website on their brilliant setup etc... but they do not provide any e-mail accounts with your hosting?
We're developing our own shared hosting setup, our own control panel too. Regardless of the control panel though, we wouldn't feel comfortable hosting peoples e-mail. We have plenty of experience in every other aspect of general shared hosting - but not looking after e-mail accounts nor the associated software.
To be honest I don't think that many shared hosting providers truely handle e-mail properly, and that job should really be left to the professionals.
We could of course guide customers or potential customers on why we won't offer e-mail accounts (i.e. not wanting to offer something we know we can't provide to a high enough standard) and instruct them on how to setup e-mail with another provider (such as Google, who will do this for free with limitations).
The alternative to the above is that we mask in a third party to look after e-mail, i.e. resell someone elses e-mail services as part of our hosting packages. The third party would require API access to setup/remove accounts..
What do you think? Are we just acting stupid trying to provide web hosting without e-mail hosting included? I noticed a while back Dreamhost encouraged their customers to use an alternative e-mail provider!

I had just successfully installed APF and BFD based on manual I read on
[url]
At the last article it mentioned:
10. Customize your applicatoins brute force configuration
Check out the rules directory in your /usr/local/bfd
Here you'll find all kinds of pre-made rules for popular services such as Apache, and ProFTPD w00t!
If you have any clue about shell scripting you can customize them or create new rules for enhanced brute force detection and prevent attacks.

My information:
I have my photography site (sfxphoto.com) currently being hosted as my main site (site contents are located inside of the publichtml folder). I also have my photo retouching site (elite-retouch.com) being hosted as a sub-domain under the main site (which has it's own folder inside of the publichtml folder). I'm being hosted through InfluxHost on a Linux server.
My Dilemma:
For the photo retouching site, I want to be able to give my clients their OWN FTP access to a designated potion of the server.
So, lets say my client upload directory is "publichtml/eliteretouch.com/client_ftp". I then want to be able to make a folder for (we'll call him) client_a inside of the "/client_ftp" folder. So the full directory to THAT clients specific folder will be: "publichtml/eliteretouch.com/client_ftp/client_a"
How can I:
1) ...set their specific FTP to open to their directory only?
2) ...ensure that they cannot navigate to other folders on my server?
3) ...make it so that the login information doesn't carry the MAIN site name, but the sub-domain site name instead?

Recently started using HAProxy for load balancing / failover, and have the usage down. But, no matter how much I search I can't find one simple thing...
Anyone know of a way to customize the status page?
Seems to be a directive actually in the binary...I can't find a conf, include, anything to pass any customization to it. I'm talking about the /haproxy?stats URI.
