I Need Peer1 Upstream In Vancouver And New York

Jun 6, 2007

We need people with Peer1 as a backbone and where we can (with a planned schedule that we can arrange with you) go in frequently to do maintenance on the server.

We need this in both Vancouver and New York.

We'd just get collocation directly from Peer1 in those parts but it's too costly.

Anyone know of where to go?

If not, anyone know of any companies there that peer with Peer1 in that area whose colo is cheaper?

Upstream Provider

Jan 13, 2009

I've been having a rough morning with my hosting.

They're claiming that the problem is with the upstream provider.

So I had a question for all you smarter than a 5th grader guys.

When there's a problem with the upstream provider, shouldn't all my IPs go down?

I have a /24 with hosted with these guys, but some IPs are up while others keep going up/down.

How To Filter Power Upstream From SAN UPS

Jan 3, 2008

I have A/B power from my colo provider, each fed from separate xxxKVA UPSes. I have dual-cord servers powered from these two circuits.

Now I'm adding an EMC SAN, which comes with its own little APC UPS. EMC says the SAN's A-side power should come from my A-side circuit, and the SAN's B-side power should come from the included little APC UPS, which should be plugged into my B-side circuit.

Unfortnately, the little UPS puts out lots of garbage line noise on the upstream side. I know this because I plugged it in at home, and it was turning my X10 light fixtures on and off when the battery would hit a charging cycle. This is not the kind of dirty power I'd like to be feeding to the servers.

Does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning up the harmonic distortion that these UPSes send back upstream? Maybe a Tripp Lite IBAR12/20ULTRA? Or a Tripp Lite IS-1000 Full Isolation Transformer?

Alternatively, if there is a way to tell the EMC SAN to enable write caching without the APC UPS, that might work, too.

The New York NOC No Server

Sep 9, 2008

i am making this post for a friend that i know that lives in Brazil. I offered to help with with his server. So here is the issues.

My friend ordered a server on 09/05/2008

First ticket said Monday it would be setup then later on Monday they said there was a problem with there vendor and it would be setup tomorrow Tuesday but would upgrade my server free of change because of this. I thought cool. Now comes Tuesday and i get this reply.

Trying to get the CentOS 5 ISO to work for the install. ISO file seems to be corrupted.

So far i still have not got a new reply or a server. I hope that it can be resolved without a paypal dispute.

New York NOC - 2 Week Review

Nov 13, 2008

I was recently forced to swap VPS providers out of now where and while bouncing around these forums I found a killer deal from a company called The New York NOC in the offers section. Of course webhostingtalk.com can be a great place to find any hosting solution but at the same time I think everyone gets that knot in their stomach these days not knowing who is on the other end of the wire. I decided to try these guys after reading a few bad reviews and to be honest I can't be happier I did.
Pro's:

Price point - With the special I received I truly came out like a villan.
Uptime - Unbelievable, I actually found a host that keeps the computers running 24/7. I am not trying to sound arrogant with that statement but for most of us who depend on a live connection to make our bank accounts a little more cushioned this is critical. Like I said.....very impressed.

Information - Amazing, this company will even alert you to downtime and planned maintenance days in advance unlike so many other hosting providers that had come before.

What impressed me even more was the fact the NY NOC's planned maintenance took place during extremely early AM hours when the server load was at it's lowest demand (Thank You). I can't tell you how many host I have been with where planned maintenance takes place during business hours.......I can't believe they are doing it right..Thanks!

Server Performance - While I have 2 VPS boxes with this provider I also have dedicated servers. The speed off the VPS box tells me it is not oversold (at this point) and the box is configured right. This is no lie when I say this is one of the fastest VPS accounts I have EVER had. Very impressive!

Support - I have my own standards for when I think support tickets should be replied to and a time-frame by which I think any fixes should be accomplished or looked into. The support I have received thus far is well above my expectations with extremely knowledgeable support staff along with a staff that can provide information.
=============================================================

Cons:
Trust me when I say I have tried to come up with one but.....I can't. I have reviewed other hosting providers and typically I am pretty harsh when it comes to reviews. Obviously this company is doing something right.
=============================================================

Other thoughts:
Keep up the good work guys, everyone knows that one hosting provider can not be cookie cut for everyone (hence some of the bad reviews) but hell.....at least your solution works great for me. My sites seemed to bog down my last VPS from time to time while the VPS I am on now just yawns from the week load.

Vancouver BC Canada Colo

We have a need for a 1/4 or 1/2 rack of space somewhere in the Lower Mainland of BC, ideally in Vancouver but will consider other locations. Needs are pretty basic: 10-20RU of space, 1 20A power circuit, a single 100Mbps network drop, ~200GB of transfer.

How is Peer1? Their site looks nice, but I don't know much more than that. I took some pings and the pings are bigger than some other providers like HE/Internap in the same region ( San Jose, California ).

Please provide your feedback on their stability/pricing and any comparisons you can make with it and HE/Internap.

Peer1 Los Angeles

Aug 21, 2007

colocation in Los Angeles [1/2 cab to full cab] and have been strongly leaning toward Peer1. I've done a ton of research on Peer1 through this site, and the general consensus seems to be that they're very solid.

I came across a handful of posts from 2005 and 2006 about problems in NYC, and there are two or three people on WHT who seem to have long-standing issues with Peer1, but I haven't found a single thread labeled "Peer1 outage" or "Peer1 downtime", which -- considering the size of the company -- makes them seem very stable.

What I'd like to hear is some specific reports from people who colo with Peer1 (especially those in Los Angeles) about how much annual downtime and packetloss is typical with Peer1. How many power outages, and for how long? How many router issues, and for how long? That kind of thing...

The longer you've been with Peer1, the better, but issues covering the last 2-3 years would probably be most relevant (things can change a lot from 4+ years ago). I'd just like to go into this feeling confident that I'm making the right choice. [It's a big step because I'm thousands of miles from L.A. and need things to work -- I don't want to have to move once I'm there.]

Finally, while I am obviously leaning toward Peer1, I'm also open to suggestions for other colo providers in Los Angeles. However, they have to be stable companies with a proven track record and fast 24/7 support -- If I call at 4 in the morning, I need an engineer on the phone standing by my server in a matter of minutes. I also need the security of a company that is big enough (and charges enough) that it won't be going out of business two years from now.

Can You Recommend A Reputable HONEST Webhost In Vancouver, BC, Canada

Sep 8, 2008

I'm a very small home-based start-up business that currently is having huge amounts of trouble with a webhost here in Vancouver. This webhost has been named recently on WHT as one to avoid. I never had a problem with them the whole 2 years that I only had a poster uploaded to this host. But as soon as I uploaded my first version of my site to this host, the problems came fast and furious. First it was not being able to log into the webmail to view any emails (which it should be known, I had only some test emails from my website forms). Then as of August 27, my site disappeared. I opened tickets. They closed them, saying problem solved. Problem was obviously not solved as I couldn't log onto Plesk, nor was my website visible to the world!

I didn't realize that website hosting was an unscrupulous business. Sigh. I've learned the hard way. I had paid a year in advance (in fact, think I was double billed to boot!). My .ca domain remains there currently as I search for a new webhost. I am loathe to mention the company although I'm sure a few can guess as I would like to recoup my domain as I have currently paid for advertising pointing to my website. All phone calls went unheeded (call centres in the US and elsewhere, even though these trained monkeys are told to say Vancouver).

Anyway, I have been lurking and reading and have been doing my due diligence; however, most reputable companies seem to be located back East. I have noted from all your posts that it would be better to have the data centre nearby.

I would like to support Canada; and in particular, Vancouver. Uptime and having a visible site is paramount to me...as is REAL technical support. I am not web-hosting savvy and I do not want to be taken advantage of again. I am interested in a shared web-hosting plan (I don't have any e-commerce or streaming video or any special needs...at the moment. My site isn't huge, but I can't check how much bandwidth or anything that I used because I can't log on...pretty minimal though).

I created my site from a Windows platform. Does this mean I need a Windows shared hosting plan?

Can anyone out there recommend a reputable HONEST Vancouver-based, Vancouver data centred webhost with very good technical support and excellent uptime?

Peer1 Miami Sales And Setup Review

Apr 13, 2008

I just moved 3 servers to colo with Peer1 in Miami. I just had 3 great years of colo with Fluidhosting so my standards are high. I wanted to buy directly from a Tier2, however, and Miami is close enough that I can access the datacenter if I need to which will be a plus.

My sales rep, Delynn, was great. Many of you are hosts and know that buying directly from Tier1's and Tier2's can be a pain in the butt because of the typical big company sales approach. You know when they refuse to give you a price and instead insist on knowing what your "budget" is... Delynn didn't do that, Peer1 has some great deals for smaller setups like 1/8th cabinets w/ 5mbps. They also gave me a month to month contract for a modest increase over the full year contract amount.

As for setup: The servers were installed within 2 hours of arriving on a Saturday. The tech gave me a call and confirmed everything was ok and that my 3 servers + unmanaged switch were doing ok on the 5 amp circuit since my servers are pretty low power usage. Their NOC is very smart and fast and available 24/7 afaik.

Important things to note: Luckily the day before my servers arrived I had an "oh @#%@" moment when I realized that I'd probably need to send them my own switch/power strip/ethernet cables. Sure enough this was the case and I overnighted a box to arrive at the same time as my servers. IMO this is a rather small caveat. It's not a big deal to send them a 50-100 dollar 100mbps unmanaged switch that's only using 0.2 amps.

So it's been "so far so good" I've been a fan of the Peer1 network since years ago when Fluidhosting used to carry them. As one would expect the Peer1 Miami pings to Europe/Asia aren't as good as the Internap routes from the northeast but I'm expecting the nearly flawless Peer1 network connectivity that I remember. I will give a network update in a few months.
