How To Safely Implement 301 Redirects On A Shared Windows Server

Oct 3, 2007

Have done some searching as to how I might do this. On a Unix server it's no problem, .htaccess and away we go. However I want to set up a stack of redirects on a shared Windows server, without causing any issues.

The shared server has many of our clients so we can't do anything too 'risky'. This includes a global.asa, or messing with the IIS settings via remote desktop.

It is too late to reuse the old file paths, besides they were not seo-friendly.

This leaves simply retaining the old files and putting asp 301 scripts up top of each page. Fair enough, but it still leaves a mess on the server - ideally I want just the new files in there.

The vast majority of the old pages are actually just HTML, there's only a couple that were .asp (contact forms etc). Does that open up any options? PHP doesn't appear to be enabled as of now, but apparently could be.

Apache :: Configure And Implement Server With Ssl Using Ldap For Authentication

Apr 28, 2015

I have a class project that we are working on where we have to configure and implement an Apache server with ssl using ldap for authentication. I have documentation of literally everything I have done in the configuration. Everything seems to be fine with the config that I can tell. The client gets a prompt for username and password when they access the server ip address. However, once the correct username and password are entered, then the client receives a 500 internal server error message instead of the webpage: "Internal Server Error...The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

I Can't Remove Permanent Redirects In CPanel Redirects

Jul 19, 2008

There are a lot of permanent redirects in one of my customer's server. I tried to remove them through clicking the remove button but although it gave a "deleted" message, it failed to do so..

Are you sure you wish to permanently remove the redirect ** All Requests ** on ** All Public Domains **

I click YES and i got the message below.

The redirect ** All Requests ** on ** All Public Domains ** has been removed.

But redirect define is still there.

What should i do? I can access to server via SSH. So may be i can handle with this just editing some file(s)?

What Can You Safely Store

Nov 19, 2007

I have a few questions for those of you who are familiar with the security side of hosting.

If you have a dedicated server is used for general hosting purposes, what can you "safely" store on that server? What type of customer data would you have on a server that is exposed to the Internet, assuming that server received regular security audits?

Can The Software Of R-fx Networks Still Safely Be Used

May 2, 2009

I have been using R-fx software since somewhere in 2002 if I remember correctly.

I have been a happy using of APF, SYSBK and BFD for a long time. I have also installed other software of them, but I choose to keep my server as clean as possible. So LES, LSM, NSIV, SPRI were never installed. I had temporarily installed PRM and SIM, but I choose to uninstall them for various reasons.

I am wondering if you people still use APF and BFD. I will keep on using sysbk as it's a very simple program that can do no harm to my server, but I'm not sure about APF as primary firewall.

I have never been impressed by the role of firewalls in server security. I think they are mostly excaggarated, especially hardware firewalls, and iptables can do anything that is required.

How do you feel about using CSF on new servers rather then APF? Do you recommend any r-fx software for good server security and performance? Rf-x is about security, stability and speed (performance). I like that.

301 Redirects In .htaccess Cause Internal Server Errror 500

Oct 23, 2008

We're on Apache and when I insert a handful of 301 redirect statements, the 500 internal server error comes up.

Example:

Redirect 301 /products/tech.html /products/technology.html

It doesn't matter if I used the absolute URL or not for the new destination.

Howto Implement A Spam Appliance Correctly

May 14, 2009

We are planing to implement a spam appliance like the mailfoundry for our 60 cpanel servers.

What is the best and easiest way to replace the standard cpanel mx entry in the dns zonefiles with our two new MX entries?

Additionaly we need to enable the option "Always accept mail locally even if the primary mx does not point to this server." for all the dnszonefiles where we use the new MX entries.

The problem is, that some customers are using already own mx entries, therefore we can not change all of them, but only the entries which point to the cpanel server.

Does someone have a script for this, or how would you change this?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: No Access Because Server Redirects To Its Hostname

Mar 10, 2013

I enter one of my IPs or the hostname belonging to this IP, followed by the Plesk port, and I get redirected to the "main" hostname of the server, which was set in Plesk. But at this moment that hostname is used by another server (my old server) and so I'm redirected to the other server and cannot access Plesk on the new server.

I don't know why Plesk reacts like this, because it did not on the old server. Here the problem more detailed:

I'm just configuring my new server with Plesk 11. My old server uses Plesk 10. On my old server / in Plesk 10 I have the following scenario:

- I have several IPs (10)
- Each IP is used for a different domain
- Each IP has it's domain as the reverse entry (configured outside of the server/Plesk)
- Each IP is set to "Dedicated" in Plesk
- I set Plesk to listen only on one of these IPs (and different port)
- Several domains are created in Plesk, but not a domain for my Plesk IP
- The server's name is one of the domains (required for mails not being recognized as spam)
- The hostname of the Plesk IP is one assigned by my provider (something like x-x-x-x.xyzservers.com)
- Entering the IP of Plesk redirects to the "Plesk hostname"
=> Plesk can be accessed by using x-x-x-x.xyzservers.com:myport

And under Plesk 11 (here comes the problem):

- Still several IPs (but less: 4)
- One IP should be used for Plesk, one for domain X, one for domain Y and the last one for the other domains
- Reverse entries are x-x-x-x.xyzservers.com for Plesk IP, domain X/Y for two other IPs and the main domain for the last IP
- Plesk IP and the two single domain IPs are configured as dedicated, the last one as shared
- At this point I did not configure any domains in Plesk
- Server's name is the same as my old server (the main domain)
=> Entering any IP with the Plesk port redirects to the servers hostname, e.g. my main domain, which is still on the old server.
=> Result: I cannot access Plesk!

Of course I could just change the hostname of the server via SSH (just have to find out how to do this), but why does Plesk react in another way now? Or is the problem that I cannot change Plesk to listen on only one IP?

Do Shared Windows Hosters Actually Like Windows Technology

Dec 10, 2008

There seem to be strong forum rules in place about the kinds of posts that hosters can make.

But from my perspective it is somehow leaving a large gap in useful information I would like to know that I can't quite put my finger on right now.

So I would like to get responses from Windows hosters in this thread without violating any forum spam guidelines and I sure hope I'm not wasting my time here with this concept but here goes...

So, the topic:

Ultimately, the thing Windows Web Hosters are providing is the delivery of information that has been constructed by developers using program code they have assembled using a large array of mostly .NET technology.

The reason the Hoster is providing Windows hosting is that a sufficiently large enough population of Web Developers have been attracted to some aspect of the Windows technology stack.

And there is certainly lots of innovative and interesting technology that attracts developers to focus on .NET in just the same way that there is also interesting technology in the Linux world.

So here's the problem. It appears as if the Windows hosting companies with the odd exception have almost no interest in Windows and .NET technology.

But if they actually did have such an interest, it is not clear how they would communicate it for discussion here at WHT because of the spam rules and of course trying to communicate anything at all about hosting on the general internet is just swamped by spam. The noise level is just insane!

So I am hoping that such a discussion can take place in this thread by asking some very specific questions:

1. What interesting Microsoft technology have you researched, tested or played with lately?

2. What programs or scripts have you personally developed lately to investigate .NET 3.5 features?

3. What do you think of XBAP delivery from the net and why do you think it hasn't caught on in a larger way since it sure delivers a richer client experience than Flash or even Silverlight.

4. What do you think of Azure and will Microsoft let hosters be part of the cloud anytime soon? Can you think of useful or interesting Azure mashups from a hosting perspective?

5. Have you tried any totally silly and insane things with the .NET runtime inside of SQL Server 2005/2008 that would give your DB guys a heart attack?

6. Have you tried out the Google systems where you give your employees 20% of company time to play around with personal projects like this?

Recommendations? Windows ASP.NET Shared Host?

Sep 7, 2008

I'm looking for a good ASP.NET Windows shared host. Here is my current experience thus far:

- WebStrikeSolutions - Excellent web host but doesn't offer MSSQL as part of base package.
- WebSecureStores - Excellent host that does offer MSSQL as part of base package but hasn't updated their website in over a year and hasn't released support for .NET 3.5.
- DiscountASP.NET - Excellent web host, CP is a little wimpy, doesn't offer MSSQL as part of base package.
For me, the essential features are:
- Reliable, reasonable performance (especially uptime).
- Includes MSSQL databases (limited number, but at least 3-5).
- Can handle CMS sites like DotNetNuke without significant slowness.

Windows + Linux Shared Hosting

This one may be a bit of a stretch, but does anyone know of a shared host who gives you both Windows and Linux hosting with one account? It is possible, as the company myhosting.com seems to offer it, and I think (mt) MediaTemple has some betas with it.

Update: Apparently MyHosting.com does it by giving you a primarily windows account with a linux sub-domain. That would work for me, but I'd rather a more known provider.

Windows Shared Hosting Security

May 10, 2008

I've been reading these forums for a while now... a lot of very interesting and useful stuff. However, I've always been happy with the hosting of my site until recently, and have never had a pressing reason for wanting to change.

However, I recently had a four day outage to my site. The hosting company (which shall remain nameless, for now) put this down to a security problem which meant they had to take down the shared Windows server and go through all the sites on the server looking for the site that had bad code which caused the security outage. I also has problems with malicious javascript being injected into my pages prior to this.

I quote from the hosting company "Unfortunately this is a shared hosting solution and by its very nature, it means that poor code affects all sites on that web server. .... The vulnerabilities of ASP, MS-SQL and .Net are well documented." They then proceeded to try to sell me a dedicated server (which I believe will likely be too expensive for my needs).

I'm no expert on hosting, but this doesn't sound right to me. Is all Windows shared hosting afflicted with these kinds of security problems? or only when it's not set up right? I need reliability, but not absolute 100% bulletproof uptime if it comes with a dedicated server pricetag. I do need to avoid outages of a number of hours/days (!!) however

Hopefully one of the experts here can put me right I can't believe that Windows hosting security is that bad that no company can have a shared hosting product that avoids the aforementioned problems. What do you think?

Reliable Shared Windows Hosting

Jul 10, 2007

Long story short, my client has had issues with the last couple of hosts. We now need a new reliable yet affordable windows host urgently.

He has an ecommerce shop running on a shopping cart called Product Cart.
earlyimpact.com/productcart/system_req.asp

Basically need the following:

Budget: No more than $20 a month

At least 500mb of web space
MS SQL DB 50MB minimum
ASPJPEG and ASPUpload
Ability to use third party private SSL certificate
Supports Linkpoint Connect payment gateway.

The recommended server configuration runs Windows 2000 or 2003 Server,

We've already tried CrystalTech but they don't include ASPupload.
We were ready to sign up for DiscountASP but it turns out to be $30 a month if we use a private SSL certificate and SQL DB.

GoDaddy Windows Shared Hosting, An Honest Review

Jun 12, 2008

After trying out GoDaddy shared web hosting for 2 months now, I am confident to give you a good review.

Purpose
I got Web Hosting from GoDaddy in order to get ASP.NET. I looked at other hosts but they are just more expensive. So I decided to go with GoDaddy since they provide quite a lot of storage space, bandwidth and of course ASP, ASP.NET 1, and 2, IIS 7 and quite cheap as well. Since HostGator didn't have that option, I didn't have any other choice.

Server Speed & Uptime
I monitor my website using SiteUptime, and there have been 0 downtimes in two months. Not sure how closely SiteUptime monitors a website, but that's what the stats read.

Server speed is very good. For example file upload/download speed is good and doesn't lag.

Scripting Support
Since I chose Windows Hosting, it comes with ASP.NET support, and the ability to create Virtual Directories via the mini web based IIS Manager.

I was actually surprised to see this but they also have PHP 5 . On their windows web hosting package they don't advertise PHP, but after testing a simple file I was just surprised and happy .

Data Base
They give you MS SQL Databases, Access and MySQL. What I really like in their database management area is, it gives you examples of different connectionstrings for your database.

Support
It usually takes 2-3 hours to process each ticket. The support representatives are kind and really helpful.

In a nutshell, GoDaddy really surprised me with their web hosting features, support and just wow .

Redirects

Jun 12, 2007

setting up redirects in IIS to maintain existing links that are prominent in search engines.

current site is ASP and generally pages are accessed without requiring the default.asp to be specified, however site stats show many URLs with the default.asp used to access the page. The new site pages will be ASPX.

my query is would both

root/folder/folder/

and

root/folder/folder/default.asp

need to be redirected? or just the latter?

i believe that as long as IIS is configured to recognise default.aspx then the folder access would work as it does for default.asp at the moment...

but my understanding is that - root/folder/folder/default.asp - would need to be redirected to - root/folder/folder/default.aspx - or whatever page name was assigned to this page...

can anyone elaborate on this and the best way to handle redirects in IIS?

Alternative To URL Redirects

Dec 22, 2008

I have a question concerning the redirection of URLs. One of our customers has 1 main website (www.x.com) and many subsites (www.y.com, www.z.com etc.) which all end up at the same IIS instance. There, a CMS picks up the URLSs and directs them to the place the user requested.

Now, our customer wants all subsites to enter at the main site/subsite, instead of letting the routing be done bij the CMS. One solution would be to let our DNS hoster put URL redirects on all subsites. This however is not a valid option for us, since it's untransparant to us.

Another option would be to create a separate IIS website for every subsite and redirect these sites to the main site/subsite. That would mean redirecting www.y.com to www.x.com/y and www.z.com to www.x.com/z. This is not a very professional solution though.

IIS & ISAPI Redirects...anything Faster Than The GUI

Apr 10, 2007

So I have been reduced, I am a firm *nix Apache user, to using IIS along with ISAPI for redirection at work. Now I can setup the redirection(s) just fine using the GUI, but I am a *nix man and doing this through the GUI is SLOW! That is when it has to be done on 3 servers at a time plus I can only access those servers through a Citrix environment.

And I need to be adding redirects many times a week. Is there any way to setup ISAPI redirects from a command line? Google has offered me nothing.

Virtual Host Redirects All Requests

Dec 31, 2007

I just went with Steadcom's VPS and they are great. I am setting things up and it's going pretty well, I have to dust off my linux/server knowledge that I haven't used in a couple of years.

Anyway I'm creating a virtual host.. I will have about 10 in the end, but right now I only have one domain IP Pointing to my new server. My registrar is NamesDirect.

When I create the virtual host, I can no longer access subdirectories directly. My Virtual Host directory is, say, /var/www/html/newdir

If I try to reach http://www.domainname.com which has been configued as a virtual host, that comes up correctly from the directory /var/www/html/newdir and works fine.

But if I try to reach http://myipaddress/newdir I get a 404 page not found error. Looking at the log, it's trying to reach /var/www/html/newdir/newdir so it's putting in the virtual host redirect even for just hitting the subdirectory directly.

Is this normal? Do I have something configured wrong? I have another domain that I have changed to IP Point to the VPS but until it propogates I won't be able to test having 2 virtual hosts.

Also.. I have not set up DNS on my VPS. I don't really understand it, and IP Pointing has always worked for me when I ran my own server form my home so I was just going to do that. But I wonder if this could be one of the problems.

Apache :: Set Redirects For Home Page Only

Mar 18, 2014

There is a page on a separate SharePoint environment, under http://domain.edu/yyy/yyy/yyy/yyy. We have a subdomain called http://123.domain. edu . We need the home page of http://123.domain,edu to point to the SharePoint site, so when users type http://123.domain.edu , they are redirected to http://domain.edu/yyy/yyy/yyy/yyy.

The trick is this - we need all sub-directories NOT to redirect. So, whatever is under http://123.domain.edu/subdirectory should not redirect at all. Is this doable? Also, if it is, I have no clue where to go to make any changes, so any instructions would be great. So far, I have found the text file httpd.conf that I can edit, but I have no clue about the rest.
