"Can't Connect To Local MySQL Server" + "IPS Driver Error"

Jun 4, 2007

During peak times (especially weekends) many of my site's users have been reporting intermittent 'IPS Driver Errors' in the forums and the following error in the coppermine gallery:

Quote:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (11)

(The forums and the gallery are the main parts of the site).

I'm assuming that the site is having problems handling the number of users trying to connect to SQL. I tried increasing the max_connections and max_user_connections settings in my.cnf but it doesn't seem to have made a significant difference.

What do I need to do to fix this? Would I need to upgrade my server specs or is it something to do with the server settings?

my server specs: AMD Dual/Dual Opteron 270 with 4GB RAM.

APC :: Shows "timeout" And "out Of Memory" Errors With Php Scripts

Nov 9, 2009

We have installed APC 3.1.3p1 beta (and also 3.0.19 stable seperately, to test) and we are seeing a lot of "out of memory" and "timeout" errors. For example, a php scripts dies saying the available memory is 256Kbytes, and the script tries to allocate 256 Mbytes of memory.

Here are the APC settings:

[APC]
apc.enabled = 1
apc.shm_segments = 1
apc.shm_size = 128
apc.max_file_size = 8M
apc.stat = 1

and PHP settings related to memory is

memory_limit = 1024M

We have tried included apc.php file to watch out the cache, but it doesn't show any kind of fragmantation or etc. related with system, instead it shows "timeout" and "out of memory" errors with php scripts.

We have thought that the error can be related to /dev/shm as you should increase apc.shm_size in order to obtain more memory, therefore we have mounted /dev/shm as 4Gbytes. The server has 8Gbytes of memory (using 64-bit CentOS).

Note that once we set apc.enabled = 0, the problems go away, so it's definitely something with APC.

Kazix / Fatnetwork / "Mark" And "Jacob"

Mar 1, 2008

A year ago I started up a website for me and some friends. By the end of last year ( December ) the website had died and I knew that I ( being a broke college student ) wouldn't have the funds to pay for a renewal.

I contacted Kazix and told them I was having trouble figuring out how to cancel my account and asked if they could do it for me or inform me how. I received the following email on Dec 18th 2007:

"Sir,

As soon as the hosting is about to end. You will get notice from our billing department.

-- Regards, Mark Senior Administrator fatnetwork.net/"

I figured this email would tell me how to cancel my account if I did not wish to renew it. I never received such an email.

I found out Friday that my banking account was over-drawn. I thought this was through my own error, but when I looked closely today, I noticed it was because 2co.com, the third-party billing company used by Kazix/Fatnetwork, had charged me for hosting renewal and had caused my account to go negative.

I sent them an email informing them that I had asked back in December for my account NOT to be renewed and that they had in fact went ahead and renewed it anyways. I requested that they reimburse me the charge of the domain, hosting, and overdraft. I had wrongly thought that my domain name was processed through them as well.

I received an email from billing@fatnetwork.com saying:

"Your domain is not registered by KAZIX only hosted
See WHOIS by yourself
The respond you got not from us from GoDaddy your domain registrant

( Who is removed )

You never requrested a cancellation from us blame yourself for over drafting, you should know where your account hosting with
Ill refund the charge of $44.99 and cancel the 2CO subscription as well as your account with KAZIX thats all I can do for you"

I wasn't really expecting them to reimburse my overdraft charges ( really, why should they pay for their mistake that harms others? ). And I fully admit that I did honestly forget that my domain name was registered by my husband and not by Kazix. What did surprise me was the tone of the email. I did use the Kazix's contact form on their website to request that my hosting be stopped. Why would I contact Go-Daddy if I had completely forgot that they were the ones in charge of my domain? If I hadn't contacted Kazix, why did Mark send me an email from fatnetwork in response to my request to cancel my account? Yeah. Someone was just being rude and snippy because they didn't want to admit that they made a mistake.

I sent a reply back to the rude man and informed him that I found his email to be very rude and not a good way to handle customers. I also informed him that I did use the contact page on Kazix's website and that I fully knew who my hosting was through.

I received this email as a reply:

"Im sure you have some other things to do Saturday night not only be rude
Ive responded you( from home, because billing is working only Mon-Fri )
Ive refunded your charge immediately
Im very glad you are not our customer anymore
Have a great weekend
Jacob
Billing Department"

Me and my husband were both floored when we read this. Who would handle customer support this way? I couldn't believe that he would have the gall to call me rude just for me pointing out his own rudeness. Then of course there is the nice touch of "I'm very glad you are not our customer anymore." Could you imagine someone in retail or any other face-to-face business practice saying this to you?

You know I didn't leave Kazix because I found it to be "bad." I just left it because of my own financial reasons. I had some technical problems with them before and found them to be helpful. If I hadn't experienced all of this, I probably would have recommended them to others and used them again. Now? I seem them as a shady group of characters who care more about their customer's money than they do about their actual customers.

As I see it now, they obviously did not want me to cancel my hosting with them and obviously wanted to renew my account for the money. What about my say in not wanting their services anymore and wanting to keep what little money I had left in my checking account? It didn't matter.

Stay away from Kazix and Fatnetwork. Let my bad experiences be your warning.

Select: HostGator Or HostRocket?

May 5, 2009

Was actually wondering what you guys recommend as far HostGator Reselling opportunity vs HostRocket re-selling opportunity. I came prepared for this questions, so here are my goals:

Goals:

Long Term - I've biz established already and would like to add hosting as unlimited bonuses and even start a hosting business slowly as my own forums start to pick intensity

The 24-month option of HostRocket seems irresistable with unlimited bandwidth and 1tb of space (as their chat), kind of skeptical as it isn't in writing, but it seems they have a better offter at first then Hostgator, but they don't provide a billing system like: whmautopilot. PL nameservers are also $2/month with HostRocket, but Hostgator reseller options has them included.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: FTP Backup - Can't Select Objects

Sep 9, 2014

I'm using the latest Plesk and I'm trying to backup to an FTP server. I'm assuming the backing up went well because I see the file on the FTP server.

1. In Plesk, I'm seeing this - Restore the backup file despite a corrupted signature. Q: What does this mean? How do I avoid this?

2. What do you want to restore? - You can select objects to restore only when you are restoring from backups that were created in Plesk 12.0 or later.

Q: I created the back in Plesk 12.0 or later, but the option for me to select objects is greyed out.

How Can I Reduce My CPU Usage

Mar 18, 2008

Last year my web host stated that my site was over utilizing allowed resources for my plan. Specifically, they state that I was overusing the CPU. At the time, I had to upgrade my plan in order to stay online. I would like to move to a new host, but the prospective hosts are all suggesting a dedicated server because of my CPU usage. I don't want to pay that kind of money, so I would really like to curb the CPU problem. Does anyone know how to reduce the CPU of a Wordpress blog? I tried posting this question over at Wordpress.org, but I haven't received a single reply.

VPS Providers! What's Your Take On "write Back" & "write Through"

Oct 9, 2009

I recently worked on an issue involving a severe performance issue between "write back" and "write through" caching on the RAID/HD.

Long story short, we purchased 12 IBM x3550 M2s came with LSI SAS1068E/SR-BR10i (gimp redheaded stepchild of the MR series. No BBU, no onboard DIMM.) RAID controller and had very bad and inconsistent write throughput with it. Sometimes it writes out 300-400MB/s (dd test, I know... don't flame. I know dd is NOT a good test.), somethings as low as 30MB/s. The server is configured with 2.5" SATA 500GB on HW RAID-1.

From dmesg log it was default to "write through" on sda. I figured out via lsiutil, you can set the drives to "write back". Once we did that, the write performance is more consistent. NOTE, this enables write back on the SATA drives, NOT the controller itself.

I loop out lspci on all our VPS servers. Found out those with LSI (SAS 8344ELP) cards have sda set to "write through w/ FUA". Those are already all RAID-10s, and I have not heard a single complaint from any customer stating poor I/O performance.

I believe the 8344ELP do have a BBU, I can double-check with DC. The DC is on UPS as well. So that rules out the shortcomings of enabling write back caching.

I want to ask those of you using Xen (3.3 & 3.4). Do you guys have better I/O performance with "write back" or "write through" caching? I'm actually looking for real world results. Where you guys actually deployed production VPS server with clients on it.

DNS Queries From Our Server

May 10, 2007

We host our DNS with DNSmadeeasy.com. We noticed that the number of DNS requests is too high. So we decided to contact their support and ask them for log file, so we can determine

what's going on.

Reply we got from them is the following:

We researched your queries and we found that many of them were coming from the SoftLayer resolving name servers. We phone their admins to report the abuse and they said that the queries were infact coming from your own server with them.

We will not charge for any overage on the queries this month so you can research what on your server is causing these queries. But we will provide you with logs of about 5% of our your traffic.

here is the example of the line from log file sent by them:

May 10 17:15:48 t145 named[29945]: client 66.228.118.72#52529: query: host-196.218.57.145.tedata.net.mydomain.com IN AAAA -E
May 10 17:15:48 t145 named[29945]: client 66.228.118.72#52529: query: afontenayssb-151-1-40-153.w83-114.abo.wanadoo.fr.mydomain.com IN AAAA -E

I changed the real domain name to "mydomain.com"

I checked the apache access log and found these hosts there in exact order as they are in log file sent by dnsmadeeasy.

What is strange is that why is my server making back these requests ? Also these requests are bad because these are not valid domain names:

e.g. should be "host-196.218.57.145.tedata.net" instead of "host-196.218.57.145.tedata.net.mydomain.com"

Seems that it includes ".mydomain.com" to the end of every request.

Is there a way to discover what is making those DNS queries?
