3 Different Datacenter/server And 1 Hosting Company?

Apr 10, 2008

Let's say, I want to setup a hosting company in 3 different location (US, EU, ASIA) and I want to host 3 different servers on each datacenter. They will not be cluster. Customers will have an option to chose their datacenter location on the ordering page. But I want to use only one IP block /24 for all 3 different location.

Is it possible?

Poweful In-house Hosting Or Multiple Datacenter Servers

Jan 12, 2009

Currently my company's websites are hosted on a dual xeon beast with 8 gigs of ram and two SaS raid 5 arrays(i think). The bottle neck occurs with our single T1 connection. Our traffic is using an average of 97% of that T1 24 hours a day. We're looking into adding another T1 at the price of $600 monthly (bandwidth is expensive in our rural area).

I'm wondering if moving to two less powerful dedicated machines (one for db and one for apache) in a datacenter would be a better use of our money. For instance, The Planet is offering a Intel Xeon 3040 1.8 GHz Dual Core server with 1gb of ram and cPanel (something we don't have but I would prefer to have) for $175/month. Two of those would be cheaper and free up bandwidth for user PC's in-house.

How Does Google App Engine Compare To Web Hosting Plans?

Apr 2, 2009

Google App Engine offers free quotas of 1 GB outbound traffic per day and 6.5 CPU-hours (based on a 1.2 GHz Intel x86 processor) per day.

How do those free quotas compare to web hosting plans? For example, the traffic supported by the free quotas -- is that
generally higher or less than the traffic supported by a typical $5/mo shared hosting account?

Above the free quotas, Google charges $0.12 per GB outgoing traffic, $0.10 per GB incoming traffic, $0.10 per CPU-hour, $0.15 per GB storage per month.

How do those numbers translate to normal web hosting plans? For example, the traffic that can be supported by a $40/mo VPS plan and $200/mo dedicated server plan, what would they cost on Google App Engine?

I know it depends on a lot of factors, but if anyone has any ballpark estimates or experiences they're willing to share I'd really appreciate it.

I'm trying to decide between App Engine and standard web hosting for a DB-backed Python site. The site will start small, but if the traffic grows I want to see which would be a better option long term.

Google Apps (Standard) And Two Different Domains: How Many Google Accounts Do I Need?

Jun 27, 2009

I hope some of you are using Google Apps and can help me to find an answer to the following question:

I own two different and independent domain names (e.g. domain1.com and domain2.com).
I'd like to use the Google Apps (Standard, free edition) with them to create two different and totally independent mailboxes (e.g. abc@domain1.com and xyz@domain2.com).

But how many Google accounts I need to do this? Can I manage two (or more) independent and fully functional domains using one Google account?

P.S.
Help section contains descriptions of aliases for multiple domains, which are just pointers or shortcuts, but not a fully functional mailboxes, so this solution isn't something I'm looking for.

E-mail Hosting, Google Apps And Domain Locking

May 26, 2008

I've seen that a similar topic was posted earlier today, but I have more specific question. I'm looking for the e-mail only hosting. Requirements:

* dedicated IP
* SMTP + SSL (TLS)
* POP3/IMAP + SSL (TLS)
* up to 10 e-mail addresses from various domains
* forwarders (10 or more)
* 1-5 GB storage
* 10 GB bandwidth
* budget: the less the better, but I'll pay any reasonable amount of money if the service is good. Basically I need to find a provider at which I can keep my e-mail address once and for all. (I need a few e-mails only, a few forwarders, 100 MB storage and 1 GB bandwidth but I stated more so I don't run out on resources)

Is there any significant difference between SSL and TLS or is it all mainly in the proprietary vs open standard?

Is there any good reason why not to use Google Apps for this purpose? I've read that some people are concerned about privacy. Is there any pro that can comment on this (privacy issue) and remain objective?

One last (dumb?) question. What is the purpose of domain locking? Before AuthCodes were introduced I could see the reason for locking domains, but why would anyone want to lock the domain these days? (and yet I see majority still does) I mean, noone can initiate the transfer without providing AuthCode (can he?) and isn't that alone good enough to keep the domain safe? And if someone manages to gain control to the control panel to read AuthCode then he can easily unlock the domain so I see no additional layer of security.

Banned My Own IP

Dec 15, 2007

You can see my servers information at the bottom.

If in this post there is security information I have reveiled I hope you will tell me

After a couple of hours where someone tried to login to root and Directadmin using ssh, i closed ssh and made some minor changes to the security.

I turned on the automatic add ip if login failed 3 times, in DirectAdmin.

I dont know why I was banned cause I DID NOT use wrong login???

My other users of the server also got banned, and they say they did not use wrong pass either?

SO how do I unban me so I can acces DirectAdmin again?

APF Accidentally Banned Someone

Mar 11, 2008

I've an interesting issue here. A client of mine was apparently banned from one of my servers and the problem has been narrowed down to the APF. What's odd is that he's not listed on /etc/apf/deny_hosts.rules file, nor is his IP blocked by iptables.

But, as soon as the APF is enabled he can't access anything on the server! This is very random, I've been using APF for just over a year now and I've never had a problem like this. But who's to say it's not happening to others as well?

APF Can't Block Banned One Of The IP

Nov 30, 2007

Since some days I have a problem with apf: It can't BAN one of the Ip from file deny_hosts.rules. Other IP's are correctly banned. Of course in apf log are:

apf(28474): {trust} deny all to/from 88.84.141.233

but this ip still have access to my server and scan my ports. I have this problem after editing internals/rab.ports (I added some ports to RAB_PSCAN_LEVEL_2). I don't know how can I fix this problem.

Topic should have title: APF can't block one of the banned IP.

New Server Has Banned IP Addresses

Jul 8, 2008

My story starts with my getting burned by fumiNET (the first *grrr*)...

Burstnet reactivates my server (for an additional payment of course). The server seems fine but I thought that I might do better with a BurstNET reseller (better service). So...

I sign up with a reseller, and since I got my new server I've been plagued with email bounces, rejections, etc. Seems that my server (via the reseller) was supplied with a bunch of banned IPs (in other words, crap IPs). (the second *grrrr*)

I've reported to the providers abuse department, but was told that I have to handle this. (third *grrrr* - or is it just continued from the second?)

I've had it. I'm ready to fold up shop. As it is the sites keep me busy - but then...

- I get screwed by fumiNET (losing a big chunk of money)
- the hassle of trying to get my fumiNET server back up (thanks BurstNET)
- transferring to the reseller for better service, and finding out that perhaps BurstNET service was better than the reseller's

I'm open if anyone has suggestions. Some that I've come up with myself...

- finding yet another server provider (recommendations welcome)
- drinking large quantities of Guinness (worth it regardless)
- pulling the plug on the server and getting shared hosting to hold some minimal content
- forgetting the whole damn thing and getting a job as a [pick one]: store clerk, street cleaner, used car salesman

Joe's Datacenter Colocation

Aug 7, 2009

I'm looking around for a nice, cheap colo place for a Dell PE 2650 I just purchased...

Requirements

* At least burstable to 10Mbit... dedi 10 is nice.. 100 is nicer..

* About 1000GB xfer should be good to start, I guess I can work with less

* Cheap IPs with no problems obtaining more

* Cheap remote hands since there's really not much in the RI/MA area. I will be going to school in upstate NY so I guess something around there would be cool too. I'm willing to ship anywhere though.

* Discounted/included DirectAdmin would be really nice...

* Not going to be selling IRCd stuff unless it's allowed and nice firewalls. I will probably only use it for a personal IRCd and irssi session.

Prospects

* Joe's Datacenter [url]

This company seems too good to be true... they offer great services for great prices and have many good features. I also spoke to an admin who said he will be able to include a DirectAdmin license for free. They include 5 IPs right off the bat. I got about a reply in an hour at like midnight from Joe (or just another Joe) himself.. and I'm not even a customer! They do free reboots. $50 to colo our 2U with 1500GB and 100Mbit. It's 25 extra for unmetered w/10Mbit but I'm sure the admin would be willing to just offer more b/w staying at 100Mbit instead of moving to a 10Mbit port.

* FDC Servers

Great reputation.. Pretty good prices for what I would imagine to be quality service. Not much more I can say about them.. Did not ask them about DirectAdmin.

Conclusion

I think I'm mainly just looking for any input on Joe's Datacenter because I really think I want to start my company there. If anyone has any better offers I'm open to anything.. but DirectAdmin would be really nice... just remember that.

I'm also looking for a solution to HyperVM... LxLabs (to-be LxCenter I guess?) is now releasing it for free.. I'm not sure if it's patched yet or not though. I think I might just start with HyperVM for now since noone is going to target us.. seriously.. we are two kids with like 2 clients right now. We can always migrate later if HyperVM never takes off again.
