Dynamic IP Addresses, Counting Visitors Etc.

Feb 22, 2008

Many ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses and I'm wondering if the following will be a problem for my site if it for example had 5 million all-time unique users:

So if someone new comes to my site with an IP that has already been in use by someone else who visited my site, that user will use the same databases with the previous user and won’t even be considered a unique in user.

Do dynamic ISP given IPs work so that someone else gets that IP once you release it?

9 Years At Pair.com And Counting

Oct 4, 2009

I'm at Pair.com since 2000.

I started a website in HTML, then by different CMS (SPIP, Joomla), and now I use several PHP shopping carts scripts (Virtuemart, CS-Cart). Currently I have 10 sites.

I NEVER had a hacking attempt in 9 years. None security concerns. No downtime more than 20 minutes. Cumulated over the last 9 years, all downtime are less than 4 hours.

You can check by yourself any downtime of any Pair.com server, because Pair.com downtime archives are easy to check, on-line and updated in real time:

[url]

My only concern is spam. When one of my email address catch too much of spam, I just need to close and open up a new address to defeat it (sorry, it's the easy way to fight with spam, but I'm not enough smart to setup SpamAssassin).

The speed of my shopping carts is great (I'm on a shared server).

That's why I stay at Pair.com: (for me) There's nothing better!

VPSlink: Over 24h Downtime And Counting

Jul 25, 2008

I am having a downtime issue with VPSlink, the "low-cost" VPS service from Spry, specifically they have let me out in the cold for over 24h and counting, due to a hardware problem in the node I am hosted for about 2 months now.

In all truth, the service has been great (read outstanding for low-cost) until this day.

It's Spry with another name after all, and they insist in putting that reference in each and every page footer.

I know hardware problems are neither easy nor fast to fix, and given that they refuse to give an ETA, I have patiently only asked for a situation update each 12h.

No answer to the update so far, only the initial reply to the support ticket and a thread post describing the situation which dates from yesterday (~24h ago).

The thing that really annoys me is that they are taking new orders to the very same plan, and those new orders are being placed on a new working node.. Couldn't they just move the affected costumers to the other node while they are fixing the affected one, even if just temporarily?

Everyone should know what to expect from subscribing a "low-cost" service, even if it comes from Spry. Despite being "low-cost", keep this in mind, you can't subscribe a "low-cost" service without incidentally subscribing a service of some kind.. Service that hasn't been provided for over 24h.

Don't really know what your feelings are on this one, but I for once remembered Spry to be better than this. You can't honestly expect to put everywhere "VPSLink, a subsidiary of Spry" and don't expect people to draw some parallels..

My expectations were just a very low end box, totally self managed, that simply worked in the areas that aren't my responsibility. To me, in the hosting world 24h downtime is just way to much time to go without giving an update, no matter how low each one standards may be.

There is a difference between asking for patience and leaving people in the cold. Over 24h downtime tell the difference.

[REVIEW] 1-month @ RockMyWeb And Counting...

Aug 27, 2007

After my BuyAVPS and PrimaryVPS VPS' fell through, I decided to get a new
unmanaged (I manage it myself of course ) VPS from RockMyWeb.net

The specs are:
640MB guaranteed RAM, with 1.5GB RAM burstable
40GB HD space, with the 500GB monthly bandwidth on the faster 100MBPS port.

I think this plan has a dedicated amount of CPU that I can use, which seems to
be 100mHz per core (8).

My VPS was set up within 15 minutes of placing an order.

It performs great, I haven't had any issues with the performance. There were
some issues with downtime 9 days ago, but it was sorted out quickly.

As far as support goes, I have had a couple of questions here and there and
they have all been answered very quickly.

Over all I'm very happy with their services My VPS is used to provide small
hosting to about 20 or so people, and I have about 25 domains hosted on it
at present. Currently only using about 50GB bandwidth per month, but it's
steadily increasing.

One of my domains hosted with them: [url]

Site5 CPanel Borked For Three Days And Counting

Jun 29, 2008

[I am reposting this with some details after receiving some helpful advice from the Moderator.]

For three days now, key features of Site5's "SiteAdmin" cPanel wrapper have been broken, which has made it impossible to do any of the following:

1. Add Parked Domain
2. Add a Domain Pointer
3. Access or change DNS zone file
4. Turn Shell Access on or off

This has made it impossible to set up additional domains on most or all of their shared hosting accounts. The only way to accomplish any of the above tasks is by asking Site5 Tech Support to do it, but one Support rep told me yesterday, "I am sorry...but this cannot be done...there are too many tickets flooding in with the same request."

After having a Support ticket go almost 24 hours without a response of any kind, I got lucky very early this morning and spent 1 1/2 hours in a Live Chat with one of their Support reps, who, because of his knowledge and diligence was able to accomplish what I could not do via SiteAdmin/cPanel. But I seriously doubt that many others will be so lucky.

This apparently started when a cPanel update was applied fleet wide without properly testing it against Site5's SiteAdmin code.

Site5 has posted a notice of this problem at [url], but, even after three full days, they have posted nothing about a resolution.

I have posted a message to Site5 management at [url], but nobody in management has responded either publicly or privately.

Is the entire Site5 Management team on vacation?

Is There Anything Like A CDN For Dynamic Content

Apr 13, 2009

Is there anything that takes the concept of a CDN (localised content delivery), but applies it to dynamic stuff like PHP and databases, syncing across worldwide servers as necessary? It'd be nice to deliver the entire site in a localised manner.

I'd imagine Google does something like this for their own sites, and maybe other large companies too — but I have no idea if such a technology exists in the consumer space.

I can see it being a logistical nightmare having to keep all versions of the database in sync, so it wouldn't surprise me if nothing like this exists.

Monitoring With Dynamic DNS Support

Sep 4, 2008

A casual reader of WHT would observe that there is no perfect hosting company. They will all at one time or another have either a performance issue or an outright outage.

I think there is a simple way to address this problem: upon detecting a failure route traffic to a secondary location. This is done typically through Dynamic DNS.

There a lot of monitoring companies out there and most of them - if not all - limit their function to sending out an alert. Well, that's not good enough for an HA solution.

There needs to be a way to take actual automated remedy action upon failure detection.

I think the simplest possible action would be to update IP address of a host with a backup IP through dynamic DNS. My question then is: does any one know of a monitoring service that would support this?

If you think of a cost of adding another hosting account through a backup provider especially if they both use cPanel, its minimal. And yet you would have a HA solution that enterprise customers spend millions on.

404s On Dynamic Pages Only

Apr 9, 2008

I have a problem with a site that I'm hosting on a managed dedicated server - I'll try to explain this as simply as possible!

From my office I seem to have a problem viewing dynamic pages on the site.

- The HTML index page loads fine
- Internal dynamic PHP pages throw up 404s
- Other PHP pages/sites on the same server are fine
- The pages load fine using a proxy browser
- I've cleared my cache which made no difference
- From other locations (home) I have never had the problem

I'm obviously worried that I'm not the only person having these problems.

The fact that the site loads fine through a proxy indicates that there's not a problem with the server,

However I'm confused that it's not a local problem as the HTML pages shouldn't be loading either right?

Cache The Dynamic Url (images)

Oct 3, 2007

I've got an application (java web ) tha dynamically creats images ( with dynamic url - ...tab&vi=nia&h=24&ds=bottom&fn...) - like thumbnails, icons ect.

The think I'm trying to deal with is to force caching theese images by a browser.

When the application starts the server gets images and shows code 200 ( and this images apppers in web browser cache), but after reloding or simply viewing the images from the cache url the server shows again code 200. I'd like to have code 304 - not modified - like when browser gets an image from cache.

The dynamic url for image is being created only once - when the appication starts, and after that it stays unchanged, but I still can't force use the cached images - like when it is a static url - .../image.jpg.

Ubuntu + Apache 2.0 + PHP 5.2.1 - Cannot Use Dynamic Extensions (e.g. Pdo.so)

Mar 6, 2007

I'm trying to compile PHP 5.2.1 on my Ubuntu 6.10 server. I've downloaded the source code from php.net and am running the following configure command on it:

Code:
./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/bin/apxs2 --with-mysql --with-informix=/opt/informix --enable-shared --enable-pdo=shared --without-sqlite --without-pdo-sqlite --with-pdo-mysql=shared --with-zlib --with-xml --with-pdo-informix=shared,/opt/informix
After doing this, then make, I copy over the generated libphp5.so file into my Apache extensions directory, add extension=pdo.so (and lines for the PDO-MySQL/Informix extensions) into my php.ini and restart Apache. I would expect to see PDO, PDO-MySQL and PDO-Informix listed in my phpinfo() - but they don't appear.

So, I tried recompiling PHP but without any of the PDO extensions being shared. This worked, and I could see PDO and PDO-MySQL in phpinfo(), but not PDO-Informix.

So, can anyone hazard a guess as to why none of the PDO extensions load when compiled shared? I don't get any related error messages in the Apache or System logs by the way....

To VPS Or Not For A Gadget Website With >6000 Visitors/day

May 12, 2009

I am currently on a shared hosting paying a typical $7/month. The traffic of my website is increasing at a rapid rate and sometime twice or thrice in a month, I get those cpu exceeded errors. I'm running just 4-5 plugins on my website, nothing much and the sponsors ads are hosted on 3rd party sites to reduce the server load.

About my website:

It is a gadget site running on wordpress software with mysql db now exceeding 22MB. My monthly bandwidth goes near 80GB. Currently I get 6000-7000 visitors in a day and I've some future plans which will make it to 10000+ in coming months.

What do you guys say? To go in for VPS or still remain with shared hosting?

If you say that I must go for VPS, then which is the cheapest and most reliable VPS. My budget for my website is upto $20/month
