Difference Between Core2Quad And Xeon Quad
May 26, 2009
What are the differences between using core2 quad and xeon quad?
Specifically, what are the differences between Q9400 and Xeon X3330?
Assume that other hardware are all the same (say supermicro X7SBi) are there any difference in using either?

I have a decision to make about hosting.
I have 2 offers for the same monthly price.
Option A - Xeon X3220 quad core
Option B - AMD Phenom 9600 quad core
Everything else is comparable RAM, disk, bandwidth etc

Which is a better option? Both priced same, I know with the Xeon 5310 the possibility of upgrading to dual cpu's.
Quote:
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 3220 - 2.40GHz (Kentsfield) - 2 x 4MB cache
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 5310 - 1.60GHz (Clovertown) - 1 x 8MB cache
Which would give higher performance in a shared web hosting environment?

I'm thinking in changing my actual dedicated server, but I'm not sure if I will win with the change.
I use it for web hosting, but I am going to need a lot of Mysql use.
I also want to work with Flash Media Server or Red5, but I have the project stopped.
All are almost in the same price. What do you recommend me?
I have never touched Linux and my Server is Windows 2003, do you recommend me to change to Linux?

on my dedicated server provider it said that i was ordering a Quad core Xeon 3320 2.5 ghz and when i got it and checked the server specs, it said Core2Quad Q9400 2.66 GHZ. I emailed them why it didnt say Xeon 3320, and this is their response
Intel repackaged the Core2Duo Q9300 as the Intel Xeon 3320. The only difference that Intel will verify is that the CPU will readout "Xeon X3320" instead of "Q9300". Both chips have the same components.
If you look at other sites, you will see them list other processors in the same way "Xeon XXXX 2.XGhz (Core2Duo/Quad)".
Ive had different opinions from different people saying they are the same and some saying that they are not. So im asking you guys now. Is this true?

Not too experienced with this and need your help. I agreed for a dedicated server deal with Core2Quad Q9300 but now the agent is giving me a Xeon X3220 instead and said there is no difference.
Could I get some opinions? Is it true there is no difference? I had the impression that the Q9300 was more powerful.

I have a Quad Core Xeon right now that I had set up with RAID 1. I'm getting horrible Disk I/O rates for this drive, 1.57MB/sec sequential write speeds. I'm having slowdowns that seem to be database related and more specifically I/O related. I run both my webserver (IIS/ASP) and my database (SQL SERVER 2000) on this Quad Core Xeon box with 4GB RAM. The disk I/O is killing me. I see that I have plenty of CPU cycles and plenty of free memory. At this point I'd sacrifice RAID 1 for better performance.
Should I got with the Quad Core Xeon with 4GB RAM for this webserver/database server config or go with 2 Core2Duo servers with 2GB RAM each?

I've spend some time today in reading about different Intel based processors. I'm learning fast (I didn't know too much about chips... untill now ) but there is something I still need to ask, since I didn't find an answer. So:
Which Quad-Core Xeon processor (from low cost ones) do you like more?
... Kentsfield, Yorkfield, Clovertown, Clovertown" (low voltage), Harpertown, Harpertown (low voltage).
From waht I saw I could guess that Clovertown is the most popular...?

Does anyone have an opinion on the Intel Dual Xeon Quad Core Clovertown versus the AMD Dual Core Dual Opteron? I'm assuming the Xeon is better. I recently put in an order for one, and I'm hoping I made the right decision (Yes I know it would have made more sense to ask before ordering but that's not how I roll) .

well, I know xeon is an old one, but does it worth bothering to change from Xeon to that Q9400?

I'm trying to figure out for sure which is best. Which would you do? The second is a bit older technology, I guess, but it seems to me that two discreet older Xeons would be better than one dual core newer Xeon.
Xeon 3040 Dual Core 1.86GHz (Conroe)
+ Single Processor Dual Core
+ 2GB RAM
+ 2 x 250GB SATA Drive
+ Cpanel/whm/fantastico
+ RedHat Enterprise 5 Linux
+ 10 IP Addresses
+ 1500GB Monthly Transfer
+ 10mbps Uplink
$174 Per Month
-OR-
Dual Xeon 2.8GHz
+ 2GB RAM
+ 2x 80GB IDE Drives
+ Cpanel/whm/fantastico
+ RedHat Enterprise 5 Linux
+ 10 IP Addresses
+ 2500GB Monthly Transfer
+ 100mbps Uplink
$172

Softlayer is pricing these both the same, and I've been a big fan of the
x3220 for a long time now. I haven't been able to fine ANY reasonably priced servers that can out perform the x3220 in computational ability.
That said, does anyone have any figures that would suggest the 5410 is better?
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 5410 - 2.33GHz (Harpertown) - 1 x 12MB cache
vs
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 3220 - 2.40GHz (Kentsfield) - 2 x 4MB cache
Clearly the cache is bigger, but for me, it's about speed and computation.
I can't find any references to the x5410 in the VPS vs Dedicated thhread.
