Customer Complain About Host But What About Reverse Situation
Apr 23, 2008
We just receive few orders in past month for servers advertised here and most of them was a fraud order. Just was surprised with a number of fraud sourced from WHT advertising. Anyone have a same bad experience?
And what do you think about "quality" of customers who order server's advertised on WHT? Are they honest, clean and loyal to host?

I've been doing a lot of research for webhosts lately, and that is how I found this forum. I'll cut right to the chase.
I'd like to order webhosting for my small business soon. My requirements are:
UPTIME, PHP, MySQL (basically, it just has to support Wordpress for now)
Storage isn't a big deal really, but I'd say we'd need at least 50 gigs just in case.
Most hosts seem to be pretty generous in that department.
Traffic is my biggest concern. The business will not be very active until August, when traffic should begin to increase at a rate we just cannot predict. Should an event happen (like being Slashdotted), the traffic could be insane because we would be most likely hosting video content (not adult content). I can picture the overage charges now, and it would be a nightmare. That is what I'd prefer to avoid.
I've looked into Yahoo and their promise of "unlimited" bandwidth. I'm thinking that might be the best choice at this point. It sounds like they will throttle your site but you won't be hit with any overages charges so I'm OK with that. I am not worried if MS buys Yahoo.
Which hosts would you recommend though? My budget is $0-25 per month until the business grows. Then I may consider VPS and dedicated solutions, but that is for the future.

Ive had many problems with hosting companies in the past, and each time i gain advice from other designers, i talk about it on forums (inc sitepoint), and i like to say i learn from my mistakes.
However, i obviously cant be learning from my mistake as i continue to have problems.
Now, this time i chose a experienced host. You could say they sold me a package and everything was good. No complaints.. well that was until today.
I come back from working away to find my website is down (www.avillafan.com)
I also find my host's site is down, and i also got no reply from a email. So i took it one step further and decided to phone them to find out whats going on.
And i get this reply ' Yes, we are sorry man - ill get it back up very soon'
Now what does this mean? very soon is a few mins. Its now been a few hours.
Now ive lost money in the past, as i like to go for yearly deals and each time i get caught out. And once again, im wondering am i entitled to get my money back? Now every other business the customer should come first and is aways right.
So how come this doesnt seem the case in the web hosting/designing business?

if its possible to change the reverse lookup, or at least i think thats what it is called.
I have 2 accounts on my CentOS, WHM/cPanel VPS and they are hosted on their own seperate IPs however when you do a lookup on one domain it also lists the other domain as being hosted on the server and vice-versa.
How do i change this so they appear like they are on different servers? Each one has their own nameservers which are on seperate IPs also.

I own a small tech firm, mostly in business to support the customer with basic repair and upgrade. In recent year, more and more of my SMB customer ask me about the hosting service of the CRM or CMS.
The question I have is, although the open source tool, such as SugarCRM and Drupal is free of charge, but will it be free for some one like me to offer the service to my customer, either the same or customerize it a little bit.
And if it can be done, what kind of precaution I need to take, so I will not be involved in the copy right battle later on.

I am creating a basic static site for my friend's gardening business. It will use html and CSS only, be around 5MB at most and does not require any databases, php support etc.
My problem is that he wants to basically have the site up and running and then be able to forget about it really. I will be going on now and again to update it for him, but that is about it. My experience with free hosts is limited, I have used byethost before, and though very good, they do require a log on every week else they assume the site is no longer wanted and delete the account and all files!
So, my requirements are:
Free host that easily allows to have your own domain name
Email address with the company domain, so quotes@domain.com, not quotes@domain.host.com
Cheap
Good customer service
Need no more than 20MB (allow for some extra photos to be added)
UK Based would be preferable

Couple days ago all of a sudden my host that I've been with for years all of a sudden went down the drain. Why? Supposedly, my site was used for spam? Stupid. They are "trying" to compile my database and files, but I DOUBT that will happen.
With an already 24 hour downtime. I am receiving a lot of emails and phone calls on site. I need my community to get back up asap! So I guess it's time to find a new host.
I need a RECOMMENDATION on a westcoast host that will provide me with great customer service and the requirements I need to run my community.
Must handle vBulletin real well, have the requirements I need, and have great customer service.
This is a local forum, which is why I would like to be on a Westcoast Host.

We recently discovered another host had stole parts of our page and use it as theirs. Right now we are currently looking to contact it's service provider to submit the DMCA complain. However we have no success of contacting their provider XO. So now we are looking to contact their actual provider (reseller of XO) but we were unsuccessful in finding such info. If anybody here could give us a hand?
The site in question.[url]compare to ours[url]
as you can see the table is identical.
Their IP- 209.31.114.36
XO Communications XOXO-BLK-11 (NET-209-31-0-0-1)
209.31.0.0 - 209.31.255.255
SECURE-24 XOXO-209-31-112-0 (NET-209-31-112-0-1)
209.31.112.0 - 209.31.115.255
# ARIN WHOIS database, last updated 2008-12-05 20:12
Have sent in a claim as instructed on this page [url], but havn't heard a reply yet.

If I use say two SAS 36gig 15k rpm drives 16mb cache - identical specs but different drive manufacturer's / models, do you guys think I would run into anything wierd? I've never really tried it. Is matching absolutely required? Never know..I doubt seek times different by a millisecond would cause issues but I just want to check.

let's say I tell the hosting company to cancel a server 1 day before the billing date but their policy is 2 days. now as you know i am not that tech savvy so it took a bit of time for to transfer all my files from old to new server (keep in mind the new server is still still with this company) .. as a hosting company would you allow me to cancel the server without billing me?

I have 2 servers, 1 has its DNS sorted out, and I have a domain on it. The other is an unmanned dedicated server. I need to configure plesk, and I understand it needs a valid DNS to function.
What I want from the second server is simply for its pages, content etc to be accessed via the IP address, not a domain, as it is purely a media server. So how can I configure this? I created a virtual domain but the plesk server shows the default folder content and not the virtually created one, how can I get the server to point to my virtually created folder content?

in any event, things are getting fierce between us and i need to find a way to make sure my in/outbound emails and web transactions are not viewable by them.

I'm building a web app that will be both serving ads as well as recording things like impressions and clicks.
Obviously it will have a dedicated server (and will most likely quickly expand in to needing multiple servers) but I'm curious what specs are most important for this sort of thing.
Is processor speed more important? RAM? Hard drive speed?
It won't be heavy so much on the side of server full pages of data (like a normal website) as much as it will be heavy for display ads and recording visitor data.

I'll be running a LAMP setup for this and will also be serving actual ad files (images, flash) from a CDN.

My questions are...
1. will it work if i setup the reverse zone in my server? or should i ask my host to setup reverse ip for me?
2. Do i have to setup reverse entry to mailserver or domain or nameserver? which is important to have reverse ip.

some clarification with regards to Reverse DNS.
An example ip: xx.xxx.xxx.xx is owned by A Company via a DC. The they have their name allocated to the netname and description when i look up their ip address.
I have my ip xx.xxx.xxx.xx this is me and it currently contains my DC's name throughout when i look it up as the description and netname...
Both are from the same DC however the other company has their name allocated to the ip address and i would like to do the same. Does this require Reverse DNS? It dosent involve domains surely does it?

We recently decided to move all our DNS to a service called DNS Made Easy and also our sever box. We setup what they call Vanity DNS with ns0.domain.com and ns1.domain.com so our clients did not have to change their nameservers.
Our records for all domains are now setup and looks like they are beginning to propagate. Here's where the question is:
IP - 1.1.1.1 is for domain1
IP - 1.1.1.2 is for domain2, domain3 and domain4
IP - 1.1.1.3 is for domain5
All domains have MX records pointing to a either Google or Mailtrust.
what is the best way to setup Reverse DNS and PTR's for this setup and what should we ask our ISP to do for Reverse DNS in this case.

if I do a reverse lookup on my server's IP it returns a host assigned by the data center. So is this something I should even be managing too or is that always left up to the DC? I run my own DNS for the forward lookup zones.
Also just a technical question, when you do a reverse lookup, how does it know where to look to get the host? I'm not sure I fully understand how these work.

I am having trouble pinning down exactly what I am doing wrong with reverse DNS at HE.net on a /27 subnet.
Example host:
65.19.156.29
master1.ipcoast.net
It looks to me like HE.net has properly deligated the subnet:
# dig -x 65.19.156.29 @ns1.he.net.
;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns2.ipcoast.net.
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns1.ipcoast.net.
And I have the zone file on both of those servers. But still won't resolve from outside coming in.
