Cost And Time Of Changing Hosts

Apr 22, 2009

If I had to give the number one reason I haven't changed hosts, for me I would have to say it is the cost and time. For example, I got a reseller account on Site5 about 4 years ago, and loaded it up with domains. Since you have to request backups, and have no access to an instant cpanel backup, it makes the process time consuming, especially when working with sites that have constantly changing data. And because I had over 50 sites there, it made changing hosts a major time commitment. Also, to pay someone to move everything would be equal to the cost of a couple of years of hosting (or similar).

Is It Time To Switch Hosts

Jul 26, 2007

I currently use Micfo, and was quite satisfied with their services and fast response times until recently. They seem to be undergoing a lot of changes, but performance seems to be going downhill. Last month I had continuous down-time of about 10hrs. They said this was because of a failure at the data-center.

Email and cPanel has been down for the last 8 hrs because of a server upgrade. (I don't know why they decided to do it on a weekday). They said it will take a minimum of 8 hrs for things to be back to normal again. It's only on the second attempt to contact support that I found this downtime was because of a server upgrade. The first support person I contacted said he has to go and reboot the server and things will be ok.

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Squirrelmail: Email Arrives With Different Time Than Server Time

Nov 11, 2008

This is a rare issue i have on a RHEL 5.2 + cPanel server.

Server time is:

Tue Nov 11 17:02:51 CST 2008
Squirrelmail time show:
Code:
Last Refresh:
Tue, 5:02 pm

So, that is correct too..

But email arrives with -4 hours time, example:

webmaster@xxx.com 1:03 pm testing email

I already rebooted httpd, exim, and imap server, and the server itself too.. and problem stills.

Server Response Time :: Network Time Out

Sep 25, 2008

I can't get access to a certain site. I always get the page with:

network time out - server at *** takes to long to respons. More people have noticed this and apparently it only happens to people with certain specific providers. And not all the time. Some times they DO get access eventy to they belong to the same ISP. So I guess an ISP isn't blocking access to it otherwise it would be permenantly/The site administrator insists that certain ISP's are blocking his site. He's hosting it on his own server. The domain belongs is registered at namecheap.com.

If an ISP is blocking this site (if that's possible?), that would lead to that 'network timeout' page wouldn't it?

What is the most likely reason for getting a timeout page anyway?

Directadmin Hosts Or Cpanel Hosts

Aug 16, 2008

Recently I stumbled along a host on here with a good rep and that uses direct admin.

Because they were very nice on the live support I signed up to see what direct admin was like.

Its very diferent from cpanel. Some parts seem to be harder to use like the phpmyadmin requires the username and password to the database you created not the control panel username and password like cpanel. Although I guess that could be a good security feature just in case some one gets into the control panel they can not get into the phpmyadmin, then again if they are smart and were able to get into the control panel they could get into ftp and look what the username and password is on the config file for the script you are using.

The bandwidth meter seems to be better in direct admin although I think its acting up for me as its putting yesterdays bandwidth on todays. I was told by the host that it updates every 2 hours and at first it did but now its gone to every day. Oh and unlike cpanel this bandwidth meter includes bandwith used by the control panel.

Niether one from what I can tell counts sftp though at least for the hosts I have right now.

Why Does .NET Add So Much Cost

Jul 8, 2009

My current hosting company - hostmysite.com - offers two Windows (IIS) hosting plans, that are almost identical except that one supports ASP.NET and the other only supports old-fashioned ASP, but not ASP.NET. The former is $20/month and the latter is $12/month.

Why would adding support for .NET increase the price by 67%? I run IIS on my network here and it's not obvious to me why .NET per-se increases cost, server loads, etc, by anything like that.

Daily, Time To Time Cpu Load

Aug 9, 2007

I have a dedicated server specs: AMD 3500+ 64 Bit CPU, 1 GB Ram, 160 GB Sata Drive. For 1 month, CPU load average reaches 40-50 value. This happens about 5-6 times in a day. When I stop httpd service for 30 seconds everything goes normal. I think this is not a DoS attack because it comes systematic, I dont believe no one makes this regularly except bots.

Maybe its a system service or a cronjob but it stops when I turn off httpd service?
How can I be sure about what's making this regularly load?

I also did set up a script which mail me when load average of system goes crazy and restart httpd service. But instant restart is not working to stop load increase.

Apache :: Server Going Down From Time To Time

Feb 6, 2013

The server is going down from time to time, every 12 days or so the site hosted there is no longer accesible, everything starts with the site slowing don and down and then is not longer reachable, what we do is to request a power cycle, and with this we start all over again till next power cycle, so on so on, of course, here are my server details and more info on this:

- MySQL - 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.10
- Apache - 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.4
- PHP - 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9
- operating system: Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS

After some time emailing the support guys to barely check about what's going on, we received an email with a few things:

1.- found a few errors that likely would cause issues with Apache. The first error is:
[Mon Feb 04 05:03:10 2013] [error] mod_fcgid: fcgid process manager died, restarting the server and the next error is:
[Mon Feb 04 14:32:34 2013] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting ...

Both these errors seem to indicate that you have a process that is running out of control on your server. We were unable to determine what script on your site is running caused your connections to be maxed out however it does appear that before these errors were generated there was a WordPress plugin referenced in your access logs...

2.- Additionally during our review we did find that your error log for mercadodedinerousa.com is 45 GB's which is excessively large and can cause problems when Apache is trying to write a such a large file.

3.- The majority of the errors being logged are:
[Wed Feb 06 12:12:31 2013] [error] [client 200.76.90.5] Options FollowSymLinks or SymLinksIfOwnerMatch is off which implies that RewriteRule directive is forbidden: /var/www/vhosts/mercadodedinerousa.com/httpdocs/index.pl, referer: [URL]

Cost Per GB Of Transfer

Jan 27, 2009

One of my clients just asked me if $4.50 per GB of transfer is a lot (as they just found out that's what their web host is charging them). I told them yes, because that seems ridiculously high to me, but I'd like to give them a ballpark figure for what that should cost. I can't find any hosts that charge per GB of transfer though. Any ideas what that should cost?

Low Cost ISCSI SAN

Jul 27, 2007

Thinking of putting together a ISCSI box with 14 sata II 750's, 3Ware sata controller (raid 6) and Intel quad port gigabit card ganged together for 4 gig transfer and tieing it all together with Open-E ISCSi or DSS module.

Anyone done something similar with good (or bad) results? Thing of using this for hosting web sites primarily as well as some storage for mail server and some databases. Servers running raid 1 and using MS iscsi initiator. Have a vlan setup just for iscsi traffic in my 48 port gigabit switch.

Are the TOE cards better to have or is the MS Initiator good enough. Plan on using the second NIC on the servers solely for ISCSI transfer.

How Much Should Mbps Bandwidth Cost?

May 12, 2008

I run a small cluster (5+) of servers and would like to move them behind a dedicated switch with my own dedicated bandwidth. I expect my bandwidth usage to be around 20 Mbps, measured at 95 percentile (greater of incoming or outgoing bandwidth). I have been quoted a price by my supplier but finding it rather high I wanted to ask users here what should be an average/reasonable cost for 1 mbps, assuming the servers are managed, the bandwidth is multi-tiered and the service is good.

MyDediServer - Avoid It At ANY Cost

Jan 30, 2008

My company rents machines and hosts our sites world wide. Lately we've seen a nice deal from MyDediServer here on WHT and rented out a QuadCore at a nice price.

We hoped that the "you get what you pay for" don't happen here but we were WAY wrong.

We started this weeks discovering the server is down. No access, no pings no SSH.

As there is no remote boot option I open an urgent ticket to support asking them to reboot the machine immediatly. After 2 hours of "we are on it" replies I chatted with their support only to be told "Admins will reboot it soon".

All and all it took them 12 (!!!) hours to reboot my machine and to top that when I've asked why it was down at the first place they ignored my questions (I've asked via ticket, email and support chat - all 3 ignored me).

I did claim it's either a DC, Network or machine problem yet they claim it is not.
Machine messages log is clean and no shutdown was issued.

Anyway Today (2 days after) I got a newspaper article made about my site ($$$) and when I came online to see traffic I was shocked to find out that the machine is down and off the grid yet again (!).

A support ticket was opened again two hours ago and a reboot is yet to be seen.

My feedback - keep clear - don't use them and avoid them even if they hand out free 8-core machines (!). They seem to be a one man (if at all) show with no to low customer orientation and a non-existing to low-existing support.

My guess is that they have a "chat operator" in India while the DC control does only US prime time support hence when I ask for a reboot it won't happen till the DC guys wake up in the US which sucks.

I try to avoid trash talk as I hate that but these guys are the worst I've ever used (and I rented out at dozens of companies).

KEEP CLEAR!

Bandwidth Cost And Speed

Dec 2, 2007

My users frequently tell me that my website is slow, but it doesn't seem to be so, for me. Are there objective tools and criteria to test its speed (response time, max transfer etc)?

Also, I'm currently paying $1 for GB of transfer. How much does it usually costs?

Since my hosting company sets php_safe off, I'm considering changing it.Can you guys recommend me a hosting plan that has:

- ssh with vi etc: this is important

- A FAST server

- Norway-based (to enjoy .torrents without being bothered) or US Based (to enjoy "fair use", which seems to be exclusive to the USA)

- 1-3GB of space

- LOTS of transfer. I don't consume many gigabytes yet, but someday I will.

- Some kind of hacking protection. I'm damn scared of my website suffering a vampire attack and having to pay for the raeped bandwidth.

Cost Effective Router

Jul 7, 2008

We are starting to bring a few servers in-house rather than leasing them. We decided to do it ourselves for our email server and a few others. We are starting with a 15mbps commit on fiber (via ethernet hand off), and don't plan to exceed 20-30 any time soon, but if we did we need remove for expansion on equipment.

What Router/Router Series would you guys recommand for a small budget friendly project, but more importantly something that is very stable? I'm pretty tech savvy, however easy to configure and maintain will be high up on the list....

Also what switch brand/series would you recommend that are cost effective and can handle a decent load?
