ConnectSwitch - Another Useless VPS Provider
Jan 19, 2009
I purchased one of ConnectSwitch's New Year plans two weeks ago. All was great to start of with. My VPS was set up within an hour of signing up and I paid my first months bill.
I sent a support ticket to them on the 5th of January asking them to enable iptables modules so that I can set up the firewall. I was told that this would be looked into as the Kernel was compiled without iptables, and Sam Smith, CEO would look into it. I had to keep sending more support ticket updates asking them for a status, didn't get much back from them though! Two weeks later, still nothing!
Absolutely terrible technical support, and I will even upload a screenshot of the ticket dialogue if anyone is interested.

As I read more and more posts and discussions I'm coming to these two conclusions related to server attacks:If attack is relatively small you can fight it with iptables/csf/apf.
If attack is big nor software nor hardware firewalls can really help.

I've always used this forum when looking for web hosts and the need recently arose to find two new VPS's and a dedicated server.
So, found a couple of good looking ones, signed up straight away with servInt ( and very happy! ) and also signed up at iWeb.
I only got a shared package to see how their service was - and I've been appalled.
I've REALLY wanted to like them, but they keep letting themselves down.
I was drawn in by the 100% uptime claim, which of course turned out to be untrue.
Several of the website monitoring clients I had running shows the site as down on 2 occasions - but I can live with that. Everybody has downtime.
The other thing was a simple question regarding the shared plan I had signed up for. I asked: "Can I have multiple dedicated SSL certificates per shared account, eg a certificate per domain".
I was told by live support, Yes. I was surprised and so signed up!
Surprise surprise, I can't do that on an addon domain. So I open a ticket at 2008-11-13 22:26:11 asking if it's something I've done that is making it screw up. I get a response at 2008-11-14 17:27:39 saying they will add an IP to the account for it to work.
On the 2008-11-15 15:55:47 they reply again, saying I can only install a certificate on my root domain...oh, so not what Live support said when I signed up! They also say I will still be able to access [url]- but as we all know, a certificate for [url]will show as untrusted for [url]. And I was told in the first place that I could have more than 1 certificate per account.
I reply 2 days later when I am able to, asking whether it would appear as trusted, and recieve a prompt reply at 2008-11-17 18:10:54 from support saying they will switch my domains round to allow me to install 1 certificate on [url]straight away.
I say go for it at 2008-11-17 18:17:34, and recieve a reply at 2008-11-17 19:23:21 saying it has been transferred to the advanced level of support.
THEN, 2 days later at 2008-11-19 20:55:02 I recieve the following reply:
You should now be able to go in the security -> SSL section of your Panelbox account and input the certificates for your domain. We did not have to switch your primary / addon domains after all.
It took 2 days for that?! I had by this point decided that the lack of ssl certs on the test sites were hurting sales so moved them to the servint server.
I asked about the SSL certs later, the first reply kinda indicated that I could have lots of SSL certs, and the second said something completely different.
Me: So are you saying that any domain can have its OWN SSL certificate?
iWeb: Yes, as long as you have purchased one for each domain at your SSL provider.
Me: Are there any additional charges? Last time I tried this (I added a SSL certificate to an addon domain), it
didn't work? Why do you think that was?
iWeb: Unfortunataly, you cannot have any more SSL certificate on your Hosting currently.
As i have already said, you will need to merge to a Reseller account. If you want to do this, please login to your customer hub available on [url]and then click on your account. After that, you will need to click on the "Upgrade or downgrade" button and then choose the "Reseller Mega Site".
I may just be making a fuss here, but while there is 1 staff member who knew what he was saying (Kevin Archambault), the others did seem to confuse me by telling me over live chat at various points that I could add more, or that I'd need to change my primary domain, or that I wouldn't, or anything.
I asked for a refund and account cancellation on live chat and they told me to go Finances>Renewable Products> Refund to both cancel the account AND get a refund.
This was on 2008-12-06 15:14:10, haven't heard anything yet except another invoice reminder on the Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 12:05 PM, and a staff member telling me my account has not been cancelled. I did leave it late to cancel but followed web-chat's advice, clicked what they told me to click and have now been invoiced for another month (my package renews on the 9th). Surely 3 days was enough?
Anyone from iWeb here want to help me out?
I do WANT to like your services as you've got some great deals but your support has not inspired confidence.

Their recent promotion thread:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=889733
Extremely non-professional service. Took them 48 hours to setup my VPS. Also had to create a support ticket. And when it was finally delivered, there was no DirectAdmin on it. Specially disturbing, since I actually paid for a monthly license.
Not to mention that their responses are very vague. They claim to apply the promotions (triple disk space, double bandwidth) 24 hours after they setup the VPS. I have no idea why they do that.
Moreover, they have false advertising on their VPS page (Instant Activation..where it should read 'We don't activate your VPS unless you create a support ticket).
A speedtest from the VPS showed that the VPS is capable of bursting to a maximum of 10mbps, while average speed is barely 2mbps.
Stay away from these guys. They're potential scammers. They WILL scam.. sooner or later.

I was about to recommend Dream Host to someone. Normaly I just say goto DreamHost.com and enter this promo code ...
Well when I went to the site to see what the package was, a "Sales Robot" came up with a $50 off link. It filled in the promo code spot. Not with my code, but with theirs.
I'm not sure how everyone else feels about this, but I consider it stealing commissions. It's one thing if the link didn't affect my being able to be the referer, but it's a whole nother game when promo codes override the referral credit. Since they use promo codes to track the referral, this really is switching the referral.
Now their website says you can use the promo codes OR a link, it doesn't say anywhere you have to use both. So even if this bot doesn't come up when there is a referral link, it's *still* stealing.
So - what are your thoughts, and has this been happening all along? Does this explain why I've only received 2 referrals when I mention it all the time to my readers?

I get a vps for a month now and everything is working fine till today.
In my mailbox I found this mail :
A new message or response with subject:
*** Your license has passed its expiry and is in a grace period ***
I have payed my monthly invoice of directadmin 2 weeks ago and I contacted connectswitch this week to say there was something wrong with the directadmin licence and I get response that they are waiting of any respons of DA.
Now 2 days later, like I thought, I can't access DA anymore and my whole server is down! Mail, MySQL, ftp, SSH, ALL!
I have already opened a ticket but they don't answer and I also not find a telephone number to call connectswitch.
I'm not angry but my clients are, how I have to explain and compensate this downtime?

Yet again Connectswitch is down with no notice of any work happening or any emails being sent out and their support site is also down. [url]and if you look at the certificate then it shows it isnt registered to them and it looks like the support system has been deleted. So we cant contact them. My vps is in UK "Delta". We finally have hypervm access again but the vps shows as started but it isnt we have tried restarting and its still not accessilbe as we cant access it via ip or hostname.
We thought they were gonna be ok as they were expanding but seems not. O well time to find a new host.

I want to try connectswitch, I have made an order and I wonder how much time does it take to setup the vps? Anyone got any experience? I have also submitted a ticket 5 hours ago to support to ask something and I got no answer yet and I am worried about the support response time.

Yesterday evening 22:30 (GMT+1), my VPS goes down. I made a support ticket, about my VPS is not available, and HyperVM also not available. They reply, they are checking the problem. After 1 hour, I reply again, what is the updates, they reply, they are working on it. Next I replied again, please keep inform me about updates.
Today at 08:00am I see, I didn't got any updates, and I write a new reply to ask the updates. After another hour, I submitted a new ticket to response my previous ticket, but I didn't got any response yet.
My VPS is down 16 hours ago...

This has been happening for about 6 months, someone has been exploiting my windows server and causing 300 php.exe processes to run, therefore making the CPU usage go to 100% and cause all php sites to not function. It is a perl script, and I had gotten ahold of the explot, but am unsure how to block it,
what the following is doing, and how to block it.. once I find the script again I will add it to the post..
I am using Plesk on my box.

I have vps with them for mail gateway.
Connectswitch was running great since Feb 09, but since they restart the DE hostnode there are many problems come.
Never running the vps with cpu load higher than 5 or more, but they suddenly suspend the vps without notification, after contact their support then they told that my vps running with 20 cpu load or more, i try to check on this but could not login into the vps even they already reactivate the vps.
They must be kidding limiting the vps with 10 process only, even SSH services couldn't running. And now they limited with 50 process with a reason for hostnode and other vps node stabillity.
I don't know what happend with their server and management.

I signed up for a month of the CS512-UK package based on the thread:
[url]
Its unmanaged and I opted not to pay the extra for Cpanel - it comes with HyperVM and you can install LXadmin from there, or even install Webmin or ISPconfig yourself I guess.
I screwed up the application form a bit as its not very clear, but a quick Email sorted that out and within 30mins I had my SSH login and IP for my server. Any Emails I sent since got replied to within minutes - quicker than the online support thing.
Anyway, it only took me a few hours to get an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server install up and running with POP3(S), IMAP(S), webmail, SSL, MySQL etc; so I really didn't need the control panel.
I'm glad I went with the 512Mb guaranteed, 1Gb burstable instead of the 256Mb I was looking at elsewhere, as I was using 400Mb+ before I disabled ClamAV, now I'm still using around the 360Mb mark, mainly filtering bloody spam!
I'm very happy with the service and performance so signed up for a year upfront - with a further discount, and migrated all my domains across. Just waiting for reverse-DNS now, which seems to be taking a while, but it could be propagation delays i guess.
I was looking at my WordPress stats and the VPS does the SQL queries in a quarter of the time my old Sun Netra did at the colo, plus I don't have the nightmare of driving down to Docklands to replace a disk or whatever, after two years of having a colo I'd rather leave that to someone else!
I was also very impressed with the HyperVM serial console - i.e. you can SSH into the host and get to your VPS even if you've screwed up the firewall rules or accidently turned off SSH passwords before uploading your key (ahem!)
Network speed-wise I downloaded a tarball at 1MB/sec which is as fast as my 8Mbps ADSL will go.
So very happy overall, my only complaint could be it only includes one IP address and adding an extra one adds 15% onto the monthly cost, but I guess its just me being a Scrooge!

I would like some opinions about connectswitch and hostingeuro as I am thinking to buy a vps with around 512 MB of ram guaranteed. For the same price I get almost the same plan but connectswitch offers much more disk space (50GB vs 10GB). They are both from Eu which I also need...

I signed up with connectswitch as I wanted a secondary VPS and the deal offered at the time was very good. After an initial problem with a DA licence (NOT connectswitch's fault) which I then cancelled direct admin, my VPS was set up. The server has been down once for a very short time, not enough to worry about and the problem was at the datacenter, I was compensated with credit which was pleasing and it went towards the next months payment. Some people have complained of slow responses to tickets, I have experienced this only once and for me, was not an issue. I have opened quite a few also with questions etc... The VPS is not managed as such but they are ALWAYS ready to help if you have an issue or questions. They have helped me with matters that they did not have to at all. My VPS was moved to a new node recently and the downtime was very minimal, a matter of minutes.
All in all I am very happy and have no plans to move. Score: Support 9/10, service 10/10, uptime 9/10. This is only my view based on my experiance with them but when looking for a VPS you should take a look and consider them.

If I go into the Backup Manager, then click the "Personal FTP Repository", then click "Personal FTP Repository Settings", at the bottom it asks for a password and says how important it is to use a password.
So, I specify a password, then successfully do a backup to a remote FTP site.
But when I examine the backup.zip file at the remote FTP site, it a plain ZIP file that you can open without any password!!!
How is this secure, what's the point of asking us to specify a password when it's not used to password lock the backed up ZIP file?

i am considering moving over from a dedicated server to a VPS solution, but host files via a CDN provider.
Can people give me their experiences of CDN providers please.
In particular i am looking at:
The prices they are paying
The quality of their bandwidth
The speeds they are getting (average)
Is your provider a reseller of another
Am looking to make available a variety of files from PNG, PSD, Vector and ISO files. Some of the files are as big as 10GB in size. I know some providers only manage certain file types.

I got a VPS, I have
ns1.mydomain.com 123.123.123
ns2.mydomain.com 123.123.124
For all my sites I used the first Ip until recently I tried to use the second ip for a particular site
Every thing went alright, I thought my site with second ip is working until yesterday I received a Call from India and the guy told me that he could not view my website because he got some thing like Network error DNS failed
I checked my site it was loading, I asked my provider and he says nothing is wrong and he can view my site
I checked
[url]
I got this Error
ERROR: Although you have at least 2 NS records, they both point to the same server, resulting in a single point of failure. You are required to have at least 2 nameservers per RFC 1035 section 2.2.
I talked with my provide but the response was this
''''''''''
This message will show up always when dnsstuff is able to detect that both nameserver names are pointing to the same physical system. This message doesn't affect connectivity and/or performance.

I have a /24 with hosted with these guys, but some IPs are up while others keep going up/down.

I've been thinking about getting a dedicated server in the EU, as the UK is just to expensive to rent a dedicated server.
I've read reviews of the two hosts I found on the net (OVH and 1&1) and none were all that favourable. (Especially 1&1 heh)
anyone recommend some alternative EU providers? or perhaps any reasonable priced UK services?

Has anyone else here experienced terrible support responses.
Over a week ago I submitted a request to resubmit new CSR requests for 2 SSL certificates. I've ended up emailing 2 departments and trying to phone for a response.
When I phone the only response I've ever had is an answering message saying leave a message or email for a faster response!
The only email response I've ever had is a single reply saying I need to email a different department and a request has been forwarded to the correct department.
I aprreciate these are budget products but this is a dreadful support level and I'm seriously thinking I'll never purchase any of this company's products again, what if I purchase on a clients behalf, delays like this arent going to look good at all. I also appreciate its a seasonal period but come on, over a week!
