Configuring A Dedicated Download Server

Feb 3, 2008

I have a server with the following specs:

Intel Core2Duo 6550
2x2 GB DDR2 RAM
2x500GB 15,000 RPM SCSI drives
Fedora Core 7

It's on a FDC Servers 1gbit connection with a 100mbit guarantee, their largest plan. I've used this plan (though with another server) before to push 241mbit/sec so there should be plenty of bandwidth.

The downloads will be anywhere from a few megabytes to CD sized downloads so there might be quite a bit of large files, mostly files will be around 20-50 megabytes though.

Basically I'd like a sort of rapidshare setup with two types of members, premium and non-premium.

Non-premium members should be limited to a certain speed across all connections but not necessarily limited to one connection only since Asia and Europe traffic have a hard time getting really good speeds without using several connections.

But I'd still like to be able to limit them at 4 connections or so, premium members should just be limited at some other value, that part shouldn't be the problem.

Currently I can limit the speed through the php script that checks if a user is premium but that limit only works per connection and not across all connections.

I'm looking for a software configuration setup, httpd etc. Hardware upgrade suggestions are also welcome for the future.

So far I'm thinking setting up two virtual hosts, one for premium and one for non-premium and then use mod_limitipconn.c. But maybe there's a better way without using apache?

Configuring Second Dedicated Server

May 11, 2007

I provide webhosting services (mycompany.com) to clients and I need some help regarding setting up my second server.

Till the domain name resolves, new clients are given the temporary url mycompany.com/~accountname where the A record of mycompany.com points to the main server i.p. of the first server

I am in process of setting up my second dedicated server.

mycompany.com/~accountname will not work on the second server as the I.P. of mycompany.com points to the first server.

How do I setup my company's url on the second server so that clients can access their accounts by mycompany.com/~accountname?

How do you setup accounts on both servers under mycompany.com.

Configuring Dedicated Ip

Mar 1, 2007

We check a domain under dnsreport and all seems ok

But, when we assign IP (not the main shared) to the account and check dnsreport we see this error:

Reverse DNS entries for MX records
ERROR: The IP of one or more of your mail server(s) have no reverse DNS (PTR) entries/* (if you see "Timeout" below, it may mean that your DNS servers did not respond fast enough)*/. RFC1912 2.1 says you should have a reverse DNS for all your mail servers. It is strongly urged that you have them, as many mailservers will not accept mail from mailservers with no reverse DNS entry. You can double-check using the 'Reverse DNS Lookup' tool at the DNSstuff site if you recently changed your reverse DNS entry (it contacts your servers in real time; the reverse DNS lookups in the DNS report use our local caching DNS server). The problem MX records are:
**** [No reverse DNS entry (rcode: 3 ancount: 0)

AND

Mail server host name in greeting
WARNING: One or more of your mailservers is claiming to be a host other than what it really is (the SMTP greeting should be a 3-digit code, followed by a space or a dash, then the host name). If your mailserver sends out E-mail using this domain in its EHLO or HELO, your E-mail might get blocked by anti-spam software. This is also a technical violation of RFC821 4.3 (and RFC2821 4.3.1). Note that the hostname given in the SMTP greeting should have an A record pointing back to the same server. Note that this one test may use a cached DNS record.

www.***.com claims to be host host.***.com [but that host is at **** (may be cached), not ****].

Configuring Dedicated/Linux/Plesk/Pix501 For Multi Domains

Jan 2, 2008

I just leased a Godaddy linux dedicated server with a Cisco PIX 501 firewall. Control panel is Plesk 8. Preconfigured with Ferdora 7, mysql, php, etc.

I've tried to configure multiple domains but am having problems.

I currently have several websites each running on their own Godaddy shared hosting account. I'm am trying to migrate all of these websites onto the dedicated server.

My plan is as follows:
Configure the firewall
Configure the server (add IPs)
Configure the domains from within Plesk (add client, domains, dns). But DO NOT change the name servers on the domain. I need to test the websites first.
Copy the webpages, content from the shared hosting accounts to the server.
Test the websites on the server. I am hoping that I can access the websites on the server using ip addresses, since I figure I won't be able to use the domain names without first changing the name server entries on the domains.
Once testing is completed, change the name servers on the domains so they point to the server.

Please assume the following:

Dedicated Server IP: 72.169.55.183
Firewall IP: 72.169.55.184
domain 1 = mydomain1.com
domain 2 = mydomain2.com
domain 3 = mydomain3.com

What I have done:
Configured the firewall interface (outside = 72.169.55.184/24, inside = 10.0.0.254/24)
Configured the firewall IP translation rules (outside = 72.169.55.183, inside = 10.0.0.1)
Configured server (added 3 IPs - 10.0.0.1 [exclusive], 10.0.0.2 [exclusive], 10.0.0.3 [exclusive]). I figure I need a unique ip for each domain?
Created a client called MyDomains. All domains are created under this client.
Created domain mydomain1 (assigned ip 10.0.0.1 [exclusive]). Added services ftp, ssi, php, cgi, etc. DNS 'A' records all set to firewall ip 72.169.55.184
Created domain mydomain2 (assigned ip 10.0.0.2 [exclusive]). Added services ftp, ssi, php, cgi, etc. DNS 'A' records all set to firewall ip 72.169.55.184
Created domain mydomain3 (assigned ip 10.0.0.3 [exclusive]). Added services ftp, ssi, php, cgi, etc. DNS 'A' records all set to firewall ip 72.169.55.184

I might be close, or I might be so far off that my inexperience shows.

Is the above correct? Do I need a unique "inside" ip address (10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2, 10.0.0.3) for each domain/website? Do I need to add translation rules to the firewall for 10.0.0.2, 10.0.0.3?

How do I test each domain on the server without changing the name server entries on the domain? I have one firewall ip address 72.169.55.184 but 3 different domains. How can I test mydomain1.com, mydomain2.com, mydomain3.com?

If anyone can tell me if I have this correct, or what I have to do to get this correct I'd be immensly appreciative. Just as important is knowing how I can test each domain before I go live with it.

Need Dedicated Servers (Download Static Content) 1and1, GoDaddy, ...

May 15, 2008

Ok, I'm a few lost about which dedicated server to choose.

First, I need 2 dedicated servers. These servers are only to download static content.

Downloadable files are small (50-400k).

I'll use lightweight server.

If there are too many user, I'll buy another server.

I search for excellent uptime, US server and fast download server.

I've visited some popular web hosting but if you know better, lets me know

1and1
Price (Root Server): $99
CPU: Single Core AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
HD: 2 x 160 GB
Bandwidth: 2,000 GB
Bandwidth Cap: 100 Mbps

GoDaddy
Price: $68
CPU: Celeron 2.0GHz
RAM: 1GB
HD: 1 x 120GB
Bandwidth: 500GB
Bandwidth Cap: 10-20 Mbps

Also, the price between 1and1 and GoDaddy is $31 but 1and1 give more on cpu, hd, bandwidth(4x), connection...

One of my question is 1and1 offers a average price for dedicated server or GoDaddy spends a part of money with Amanda, Candice and Danica?

Do you have some suggestion for dedicated server or web hosting?

Configuring Php/mysql On IIS Server

I have setup php and mysql on a windows IIS 6 server. php has installed fine and works but I have 2 problems

1. When i browse to http://localhost i get a 403 error but when browsing to http://localhost/index.php it works fine. It makes me think that the server does not know what extension to default to when doing a directory listing

2. I have phpmyadmin installed and the cfg file is set to do a 'config' authentication. That works but everytime i go to submit a form to create a new database or anything i get prompted with an HTTP user/pass. I'm not sure if this is a phpmyadmin issue or a php configuration issue

Configuring Server To Handle Both MySQL And MS Access Databases

Mar 24, 2008

Since I have never worked on the server end of things I had a quick question for all you web hosting gurus.

Is it possible to have PHP installed on ONE single server and still have the ability for the server to work with both MS Access AND MySQL at the same time?

I would think YES, but I am being told by our server branch at my current job that this is not the case. They claim there is no way for the server on one machine to be able to handle both types of databases. Are they right?

If they are wrong and it is possible to have one server run both type of databases, what steps would be necessary to set up the server to handle both types? Do we need to tweak the php.ini file or is there another method of allowing the server the ability to work with both MySQL and MS Access.

Sorry if this question seems stupid or odd, as I said, I have minimal experience on the server end but I am confident that a server can handle both.

Configuring Mail Features Of Windows Server 2003

Jan 23, 2008

Please pardon the "newbie" nature of this post. (Due to circumstances outside my control, I've had management of a Windows Server 2003 VPS thrust upon me, and I'm feeling like a fish out of water!)

I have finally abandoned any hope of getting phpmailer to work with Joomla 1.0.13, so I've decided to configure the POP3/SMTP features of my server so that I can use Joomla's SMTP mail service. (Joomla's SMTP option is limited to port 25 and cannot use ssl.) Anyway, I've tried to set up my POP3 and SMTP services, but I must be doing something wrong. I have both services set up with my registered domain name -- and a check of the DNS in the SMTP setup comes back OK. However, if I try to use my domain name as my SMTP and POP servers in Outlook Express, the program times out while "looking for host." If I enter "localhost" or my IP address (numeric) as my mail servers, I get a dialog box asking me to log in. However, when I try to log in -- using my administrator name & password -- it doesn't work.

I should probably stress that I'm using SERVER 2003, not an EXCHANGE server for this. I have need for one, whole mailbox to make my stupid contact form work, which is why I'm doing this in the first place. If this doesn't work, I'm going to create my own contact form in html, throw it into a joomla content page, and use the phpmailer script to send it manually. Not ideal, as it will always go to the same mailbox, but I'm getting to the point where I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!

Configuring Your Server To Survive The Digg / Slashdot / Web2.0 Effect

Sep 12, 2007

I learned the hard way last year when my website (on GoDaddy shared hosting) made the front page of Digg. GoDaddy suspended my account in a hurry (and didn't bother to inform me, but that's another story). I'm planning to get a VPS account with SLHost to prepare for future traffic growth.

How should I configure the server to best handle a huge spike in traffic? From what I can gather, there are a number of factors:
- Max HTTP connections (MaxClients in Apache)
- Max number of open file handles allowed (a kernel thing)
- Virtuozzo allowed TCP connections

This post at webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?p=4552677#post4552677
by Josh at SLHost outlines the defaults for their VPS servers:

Quote:

Are you referring to HTTP connections or other? By default, the MaxClients setting is at 256 clients and would need a recompile if you want more. The number of open files allowed is set to 1024 by default and can be raised. There are also Virtuozzo allowed TCP connections, which is set at 1200 and we've noticed that anything more than that should either be on an Enterprise VPS package or low end dedicated server at least.

Should I do any tweaking to the defaults if I want to survive another Digg onslaught?

How Do I Download Directly To My Server

Oct 7, 2009

I've been trying in vain to find out how to download files from online sites directly to my server hosted with Siteground. Basically, I figure why bother downloading to my local HDD when I back everything up on my online server anyway.

I know this classes as a server to server file transfer but I want to download things like software, particularly Linux distros, and archive them directly on my server. I just can't think how to word it any other way. I use my browser and click the download link and it asks me to save it to my local HDD but instead I'd like to save it to my backup server bypassing my local comp totally.

Currently Siteground give me "unlimited" bandwidth and "unlimited" storage space, overselling obviously but now I want to use some of my space. My home upload speed it 20kb on average so this is why I'd rather upload/download/save interesting software etc onto my backup server.

I've looked briefly at WGET and CURL but it looks too complicated. I'd just like to be able to FTP all my 'normal' downloads right onto my server. I'd use an intermediary service for this as well as this backup is for non-private files only, if only I knew how to word the concept.

I just don't know how to search for the right tools or whatever for what I want to do.

I just want to add a "save to my server" option to my normal download dialog for want of a better description.

Mean Download Server Specs

Oct 19, 2009

I'm starting a file download site. I've done a lot of research and I'm currently planning a head for growth and scaling. Looking to serve around 250-500 thousand 5MB files a day.

I would like some input from people that KNOW what they are talking about, hopefully people that have hosted/ran similar sites.

The main question I need answered is what will be the first bottle neck for a single download server will run into when delivering the following.

File size = 10MB.
Number of downloads = As many 1.2mbit download streams as possible.

Example Server, lets say...
Intel 5405
8GB Ram
2x640GB RE3 Hardware Raid 1
1000mbit

Am I correct in assuming the bottle neck will be the HD's here? So would I be right in assuming this could handle around 200 concurrent downloads @ 1.2mbit(250mbit)?

Hostgator flv

Goddady flv

Now i am use a Download manager " free download manager" to download files
The hostgator file downloads at 17-35kb/s
The godaddy file downloads at 200kb/s

I am using 2Mbps dsl.

Also my hostgator cpanel loads slow. and other files are downloads at very low max 40kb/s.

What are the issues. I've contacted hostgator support and they say that every thing is ok on their end.

I have to stream videos on hostgator but the speed is too slow. and it buffers alot.

Setting Up Download Server With Lighttpd

Aug 8, 2008

to getting a second server, specifically for downloads for my site. Without going into too much detail, my website requires that I get a separate server for downloads, and another for the webserver.

I've already gone ahead and configured the server I want; however, I'm trying to do something different from what I'm used to. I'd like to use Lighttpd, instead of apache, as well as not having cPanel installed on the server. I'd still have cPanel and Apache on my regular webserver, but I'd rather keep my download server relatively clean.

So, once I get my server, and I install Lighttpd, how do I go about setting up everything so that my two servers can communicate? I'd like the download server to be something like: download.mydomain.com , so would I have to set up an A Hostname on my webserver?

What are the steps I should take?

Server Cuts Out/brakes Download Of Data.

As for downloads, I tested with a 8MB file. I downloaded with typical firefox browser and 1st time it claimed it finished downloading at 3MB mark. Second time at 1MB mark.

I have no idea how to fix this. Any solutions as to what to change or adjust in order to prevent this from happening?

Additional notes:

Server only supports php/static pages. It's limited to 150Mbits, and constantly wants to do more. But I can't lift now due to financial concerns.

Simultaneous Download Speeds On Virtual Private Server (VPS)

Oct 7, 2007

I just got a VPSlink account about a month ago and for all testing purposes, it has been great so far [my first VPS]. But I haven't transferred my main site to it yet mainly due to one specific question about download speeds. Quickly, here's what I've found about their network...

VPSLink is owned by Spry, so from all I can tell, they're using the same network speeds. Which are:
Unmetered: 1.5 megabits per sec in total traffic.
Metered: Spry's site says "throughput of up to 8Mbps"

Ok, so here's what I'm trying to find out:
I'm running a small software business with some downloads (all legal of course - they're mine ) and would like to know what the real-world download speeds that users would normally see when downloading my files. Here are the knowns:

a) Let's assume for this question that all of the user computer's are on very quick connections, so their speed wouldn't be an issue.

b) An example file would be say, 20 MB.

I'm most looking to see how speeds would be (in Kbps) if say, 20 people are downloading a 20 MB file at the same time (again, with their connections being extremely fast; fast enough for the sake of this example to not be a factor - so the max speed would only depend on my VPSlink server's connection).

I don't know of a good way to really test this since I only have access to 1 physical connection. I did try a test with a friend. Here's what happened:

I normally get about 500-600kbps sustained on my cable modem, as does my friend. When downloading a test file on my server I was able to get about that when downloading all alone. But, when my friend and I downloaded it at the same time, both of us got around 350kbps -- so the total speed about dropped in half. Again since my site is for software downloads, and when releasing an update to one of our products, sometimes I'm guessing 20+ users download simultaneously for a couple days.

This currently seems to work ok on Dreamhost, but for many other reasons, we're needing a VPS. But would this vastly decrease our file transfer download speeds to users? If users got something horrible like 2kbps, that would most certainly loose a lot of business for us since they'd just get frustrated and cancel for the most part.

Does anyone know of a rough estimate on how to figure this out, or even better, are there any VPSLink customers out there that have experience with this?
