Can Typepad Also Be Used For "regular" Website Hosting

Jun 2, 2008

I know Typepad is primarily a blogging platform, like Wordpress. However, many people say that Wordpress can be used as a full-fledged CMS, where, for example, one could maybe even develop their business website with it.

Could you do that same sort of thing on Typepad's hosted offering? For example, may a business website that could support e-commerce and such?

Regular Shared Hosting Vs. VPS Vs. Dedicated Server

Jun 1, 2008

My head is about to explode with all the information available in regard to regular shared hosting verses VPS verses dedicated server and I still don't have an answer. It will probably be of some benefit to say that I have virtually no experience in any of this aside of having previously published a small website. Of course there are no worries when it comes to something small however, now I am getting into something much larger and am pretty much sitting here like a scared rabbit in the face of trying to make the right host decision.

Let me start by saying that my site is a reverse auction type of site that will also have a forum, blog, small auction venue etc. Users will be uploading files and communicating within the site as well. It might help to say that it is similiar to getafreelancer.com. We won't have a technical theme but the set up is similiar.

My question is....I don't know what kind of host to go with! I originally thought IX but then read up on the dishonesty involved with claims of unlimited bandwidth. Then I thought about VPS which I guess is different from regular hosts but I'm not clear as to why. It's still shared isn't it? Finally, I'm thinking about a dedicated server. I have found a place called server4you.com that has reasonable prices but I still need to check them out. The problem with this option is that I have absolutely no understanding of the tech side of dealing with my own server. I know that some companies offer a managed option but they are so expensive and I don't even know what that would entail.

Plus what about security, how does that work with a dedicated server. For example, when shared hosting companies list options that come with a package, SSL is always mentioned for e-commerce hosting. How would I secure my own site?

How in the world is someone supposed to know how much space they need before they publish? You really can't determine data transfer ahead of time. I am in dire need of some good options that won't bleed me dry and I barely know of the right questions to ask.

Outside The Regular

Apr 21, 2007

I have an empty server(Server A) with apache and php running, and my virtual host is at /var/www/html/index.php...

I'm also running SAMBA(server b) with another server and sharing folder /home/pictures/public_html/* full read/write access to my other server...

However, everytime I try to access the shared folder from my php script, it gives me a permission denied.

PHP Code:

Warning: file_get_contents(/home/pictures/public_html/142470.jpg): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/html/thumb120.php on line 5

From server A, I can delete and add files to Server B shared folder fine... And all my permissions on the folders are 777 as well. However, if I copy that .jpg into /var/www/html/142470.jpg, and run that php script with that /var/www/httml path and it would be fine...

I'm using apache webserver for implementing virtual hosts. I want support on using RedirectMatch in combination with regular expressions. I want to redirect an incoming url with specific information to redirect to a local file. I'm trying the next line:

RedirectMatch /sap/opu/odata/sap/ZVPOSTREAD_SRV/AktepostSet(.*(BSL01).*)http://10.103.140.62/BSL01_X_1197.json ( This gives no match !? )

Hosting For Gaming Website

Jan 30, 2009

A few days back i had made a post asking about which would the best host for a dating website that me and a couple of friends were planning to start. Thanks alot to everyone for the answers.

However now we have decided to go with a gaming website, as the idea appeals to most of us.

The concept is to have a real time online game running on the server 24X7, people can join any time they want and leave any time they want, the game would still keep progressing. My main concerns with such a site are:

1. Bandwidth : As people will be online for a long time playing the game I am guessing we will need good amount of bandwidth

2. Server CPU : Will we end up eating lot of server CPU as the game engine will be running 24X7 on the server? What kind of implications does this have? I dont see any CPU specific details in the hosting plans i have seen so far.

Please advise on the above two. What kind of hosting should I be looking for? Hosting budget is 30$/month (max).

Hosting For 4GB Website + 2GB SQL Database

Aug 9, 2008

I have a friend who has a dedicated server right now that uses a good 4GB for all his website content. (not streaming media but just a whole bunch of scripts and etc. well thats what he tells me). And so anyways, his SQL database is about 1-2GB. And he is not too sure about his monthly traffic but its a social networking site with a good amount of users (so its actively used by many users). Would it be necessary for him to have a dedicated server or do you think he could cut costs with a shared hosting account at like host gator or some other shared hosting service like that? I guess my biggest concern is his current database. A lot of shared hosting companies (from what i saw) offer unlimited Mysql Tables do they have size limits? And does a bigger sql database drastically effect the performance of the overall server?

Moving A Website - Hosting

May 7, 2008

I am re-developing a website that launched 8 yeas ago. When the site launched it was developed in TCL and had an Oracle back end. The site's previous developer is still hosting the site on his server.

Long story short, we are re-developing the site on a new server at a different location. We'd like to re-launch on the old server (to help maintain Google search rankings), but we are developing in .Net and SQL. The old server is Linux. We want to maintain our ranking on Google since we are "Top Ten" on more than 20 great keyword phrases.

If we use a DNS forward from the old IP to the new one, are we going to loose rankings on Google? Obviously yes. But would it be beneficial to help the old developer buy a SQL server so the DNS forward is to a server 2 feet away as opposed to across the country? Does Google treat these equally?

What about the specs we'd need for our main server? Do we need a load-balancing system?

And for hardware replacement, is there anyway to get life easier if any hdd (hard drive disk) are broken?

Hosting The Images For My Website On Photobucket

I use 34SP to host my website, and the package which I use allows me 2000MB of traffic a month. If every image that I use on my website (including the logo and background image) is hosted on photobucket instead of by the 34SP server, does this mean that the data received from photobucket won't count against my monthly traffic allowance?

And is this a reliable way of doing things? I guess it's less reliable than having all the images on the same server, but how often is this likely to go wrong?

Hosting One Website Accross Two Different Servers

Dec 22, 2008

how to host one domain accross two different servers that gives resliance and load balancing?

I know I could setup my domain on two servers and have two of the following records:

www.domain.com x.y.z.a (IP add 1)
www.domain.com y.y.z.a (IP add 2)

But the problem is users also access emails by www.domain.com/webmail.

Now the MX record is pointing to one sever as we want to gather all the emails at one point. So how do I get the users to go to one particular server for the email? I was thinking to alter the email url to something like

www.mail.domain.com/webmail which only goes to one server.
