Bluehost Advertises Their Prices In Whois Records
Apr 13, 2008
This morning I was doing some domain lookups trying to find an available yousuck.* domain, and I stumbled upon this record:

Is it really ethical for bluehost to advertise their prices in the whois records of domains registered through them?

Is there a way to search through all the WHOIS records for a specific contact e-mail address. I'm trying to track a scammer and I've yet to find a search engine that could do this.

A lot of the web hosts I Come across are resellers. This is understandable, but is it possible to find out who they are reselling for? Also, is it possible find out who the registrar of a domain is? I know of whois, but it doesn't seem to tell me the original host/registrar.

Is there a way you can hide from the whois lookups how many site's you have hosted on your server? Like, for the reverse IP, usually it'll mention how many sites are hosted on the server when you do a whois lookup.
Is there a way to prevent it from doing that?

I went through a good reseller instead of going through the datacenter
They offer great support unlike the datacenter their purchasing from
But i know that data center are professional company.
I did a whois on my domain name everything looks ok, my info.
But when i do a whois on the ip for this domain,
I get the company info for the datacenter.
Can i change this or do i have to purchase my own ip?

I forget the technical term for this. But I wish to be able to change the abuse email upon IP lookup to ensure abuse gets dealt with as swiftly as possible. There will be obvious trust issues involved however. Do any providers offer this?

I got a new box, replaced it with my old one, and the whois program only shows registry portion, but not registrar portion.
I see when it expires and stuff, but not the registrant info you know.
never run into this before, can someone come with a solution?
It's standard CentOS.

Anyone know a good registrar who accepts Paypal payments with a .com domain price of around $10 or less and privacy option for about $2 or less? I also need to be able to set nameservers in a control panel.
Registerfly and GoDaddy didnt work... both ask credit cards and I only have Paypal.

I'm about to launch a viral project that has realy good potential to strike it big, but would like to clear a few things first.
I would not like to have it associated with my name - not that it anything illegal, but in real life I'm doing something completely different and on the record would like to keep it that way.
So that probably means keeping the whois private - but I have another question as well. Suppose the project strikes it big - would a diggin journalist be able to still get my name/data from a hosting company too?
Is there a good hosting company with an all-inclusive service that you could recommend (that would get me a private hosting plan + a private domain name/whois)? And that would be reasonably priced of course + more importanty reliable (note have problems if/when there is a massive traffic surge to my site at one point in time)
Would probably take a shared hosting plan - need only PHP and imagemagick to start with. But again - bit part of my concern is what happens if the project makes it big and there is a lot of traffic - so ideally "unlimited" bandwidth and responsive admins...

I normally order SFPs from MemoryDealers. I've seen their prices nearly double the past 6 months. Is there any reason behind this (component pricing) I'm not aware of?
Are there any other good third-party SFP suppliers?

Today I wanted to configure server for colocation and I went to both HP and DELL, and everything was ok until I started to configure HDDs. Price of regular 1Tb HDD is about $500 on both DELL and HP, while same drive costs $84 on newegg. Whats the catch? I mean processor, RAM, and everything else has normal prices, but HDDs are 6X more expensive than normal price.
Do you know any good site where I can configure server and order it to colocation address. Also it must be very cheap ? Best would be if I could order components from new egg, send them to company which assembles everything and then send it to DC.

We all see this and not just in the hosting industry. Prices like 7.95$ or 5.99$ or 1.90$. They mean just 8$, 6$ and 2$ on the excel sheet plus come cents more or less.
But for the customer he prefers to see the first digit only, just the 7 instead that he know hes is almost paying 8$.
Now, do people actually think this has some effect in the customer?
Do you think a price like 7.95$ actually looks cheaper then just a straight 8$ for example.
I know then when i look at such an price i just round it directly to 8$ so i that trick doest work on me and im sure it doesnt in allot of other people. When i shop online i just calculated all the products rounded directly so i get a higher price of what im paying. On the checkout i save just a little cents but i know i paid basically an exact number.
Now my discussion was to be able to know in what benefits and or hurts to use those prices for a company. Do people prefer decimal prices or do they just prefer a straight price. And why instead of 7.95$ people dont just use 8.20$. The price is basically the same, 8$ for the viewer or shopper but you are still making 20 cents more that the customer doesn't, care instead of actually losing 5 cents in each transaction.

Shared rack space is $30/month per 1U and that includes power, cooling, and 8 ip’s.
Burstable to 1Mbps Overage
100Kbps = $35/month $350/Mbps
256Kbps = $75/month $300/Mbps
512Kbps = $125/month $250/Mbps
1Mbps = $180/month $180/Mbps
What do you guys think of these prices?
Are they standard or should I look for a better deal?

I am considering adding offsite secondary backup servers in house on a full T1 (multiple? or a fractional T3?). Servers will be located in Ontario Canada. Does anyone know the average, upper, and lower cost for a full or even partial T1? I am trying to go as cheap as possible since the line probably wont be used unless the datacenter looses service.
If anyones had any experience with T1, as far as price, reliability, best providers etc

Just finished a conversation with a friend and business partner. He wondered if the the prices of shared plans will increase. My position was they would... or at least many companies will increase it withing the next few month.
My arguments is there was a pricing war since 2005 and many dropped their prices close to zero. Now the dollar is weak and there are many other reasons prices of shared account go grow.
