FDCservers Experience
Oct 25, 2009
I'm basically just going to copy/paste the message I posted on their forums that will likely never see the light of day... But before I do, I would like to say the following...
We have been clients of FDCservers for over 2 years and have had nothing but good experiences with them up until...
"Ok, I'll try to remain as cool and collect as I possibly can, but I have to air my concerns here since our issues are NOT being resolved via support tickets...
We currently leased a new server 2 months ago in August, replacing our old server. Ever since we've gotten this new server we have had nothing but problems.
The problems are the same each and every time, and yet nothing is getting done to actually resolve them...
In a nuttshell, merely days after leasing this new server, we had an HDD fail. It was replaced a day or so later. Then a few days later, another HDD fails. Replaced 2 days later or so.
Then again, HDD failure. Now not only do we have to wait another 2 days for it to be replaced (seems you guys don't keep an on location stock?), but we also have to reload the OS due to the failure.
Finally get the server back online, losing a small amount of data in the process (so far); and AGAIN we have an HDD failure. And again, and again, and again...
I have been very patient with your support staff up until this point, but the amount of money we have lost over the last 2 months is making me look for a different provider.
The issues we are having point to hardware related issues, more than likely a bad onboard disk controller. But the solution has always been to simply replace the failed HDD with a new one, oh and one time you swapped the sata cable to another port.
Now, I'm fully aware that you do not offer an SLA, which is fine.. but we are still paying for a service and yet we are not getting what we're paying for at this point, which is really saddening because we've had nothing but good things to say about your company for 2 years now. But this latest run of events is quickly changing my opinion, and simply because your tech support doesn't seem to actually want to resolve problems the right way.
And now I'm told my server has been completely replaced, but not after a claim that one of my disks started "smoldering", one of them is corrupt and one is lost (as in physically misplaced). Not only that but this "new" server had a whole 2 hours of uptime before it crashed. I have to ask what the hell happened to you guys? You were the first company I recommended when someone asked about a good dedi server company, yet now I'm sitting here with ALL my data seemingly gone (we're talking several hundred GB's of data btw, not something that can be easily replaced by backups) and a "new" server that is already having stability issues!
I really hate to say this, but you guys do not hesitate to turn off a server if a payment is 3 days or so late, so why do you hesitate so much to give us a server that actually works properly?
Or server is ID# ####. Please address our issues once and for all (You can see the ticket history) so we can go back to being happy customers like we have been for the last 2 years..."
So my question is... what in the hell happened to these guys? I remember the one time we had a hardware issue (dead mobo on our old server), it was replaced and we were back online in under an hour. But now I dunno wtf is going on except that we are constantly losing money thanks to this newfound incompetence...

I had no problems with FDC and they were great at getting my server up with no charge for remote hands when needed. Since then it has been a different story though, atleast in the last month or so.
First off, I was put on their pure PCCW network thinking that problems with their Cogent network and such wouldn't effect me but it seems everytime they are DDOSed and everytime they have downtime with any network it drops packets for me as well which is pretty often on some occasions.
Second off, I had another server shipped there recently and it arrived damaged. They told me it was the power supply acting up so I ordered a new one and had it sent to them. They installed it quickly but still notified me that the hard drives weren't all recognized. I found it to be that one of the hard drives was bad, after removing that drive from the system I asked them to reinstall the OS which they did but they told me they still had problems booting it up with the SATA controller. I said to them to make sure that the SATA controller was enabled with AHCI which is needed for CentOS. They kept telling me how the server was bad and they needed to send it back.
I received this server earlier this week to find that the SATA controller was disabled in the BIOS and as soon as I enabled it, it booted up just fine. So that was a waste of 2 weeks and $30.00 they charged me to ship it back.
Also the power supply that was replaced (which was still under full warranty, worth >$50) they told me was unavailable because it had been "recycled". It only states that they own the property after 30 days of it being in their possession which I brought to their attention but they have yet to respond to me since I asked for them to credit me $50 or provide me with a 500W power supply.
If a support staff member is so incompetent that he cannot see if an SATA controller is disabled, how is he competent enough to work on servers?
I suggest future people looking into FDC to avoid making the decision, if you have trouble with your servers they are not on your side, nor care about what happens to you.
This whole ordeal cost me $70 total in shipping, atleast $50 in a power supply, and lost me business for atleast 2 weeks and they don't even have the courtesy to respond to me about it.

I'm really fed up with fdcservers.net VPS. The node I'm on is very unstable recently and it went online and offline very often, most of the time it went offline. I've checked my memory usage and the max I've seen is 240mb and my plan with them is 512mb. So i emailed their staff about it and she told me I had overused "dgramrcvbuf" and asked me to kill some processes. I don't have mysql and php running on my site, I use this VPS to host some swf and jpg file to my other site. Everytime I checked my memory and CPU load in WHM and it always shows green and CPU is below 0.4 most of the time. But when I run top command in SSH the memory goes up and down like roller coaster for the node where I've been told there's 4 VPS sharing the memory. So today I decided to take my apache offline for few hours and still experienced the same problem, the VPS still went offline most of the time. I hardly use my VPS and the amount I'm paying is not worth it at all. Anyone know what really cause VPS to be down besides running out of memory?

I have a VPS with FDCServers.net - I like it a lot. Now for the last two days, the VPS keeps getting hacked. I Have no idea how it even started. I first noticed Friday during the day at school. I sat during school and fixed it. They had installed SubSeven. Today, about 5 mins ago it was re-hacked. SubSeven again.
Now, I have firewalls on the server, after 5 attempts you are banned from the vps for 15 mins. ect..
This is my personal vps and I can't figure out how its happening, I use it for things like tunneling and such storing files ect.. Nobody ever is on it. I don't even host files on it. I have cPanel installed for the hell of it, it is always updated ect..

I've been considering some local Colos over the past few months. I've seen FDCservers located out of Chicago, they are actually only 1 block down the street from my office, which is nice. Their prices are amazing. We are looking to colo 1U Servers.
here is a snipit I found on the ads forum.
INTERNAP PROMO
NO minimum commit
Month to month term
%100 dedicated INTERNAP bandwidth $12/Mbit !!!
Server Space (electric included)
1U server - $39/month
So according to this I can get a 10MB InterNap Colo for $159/mo.
Anyone care to share their experience with this company?

I have tried this service with their Virtual Dedicated Server #3 offer for two months, the connection was not impressive... And I was surprised especially by the support, each time that you have a software problem you have to pay 25-50$ to have it resolved, they work free only for material difficulties.
One day all is working and the day after your websites are no more offline, if you have access to the server (even if you have not touched to the server and that the sites are still not running after a restart), it is considered as a software complication and you have to pay... it happens 1-2 time by month.
Very disappointing and it is not well specified on their website that the support is not free.

what can i say, you get what you pay for but i think this is expensive!
i fell to the trap of unmetered bandwith. its true, it was really freaking fast speed.
BUT, ram is limited. especially if you run cPanel. i advise people not to use it.
Tickets were answered very fast. usually within 2~5 minutes. even faster at times.
downside: a bit expensive. even though unmetered bandwith, this is shared. also its tough to push much traffic because of the lack of ram. i think if you bought something with 1gig ram, you can find cheaper VPS.
also you are completely on your own with this VPS. nothing surprised i knew this going in. But then i discovered other services that provided managed VPS at even cheaper price! these were reputable companies too. Next time im just gonna go with managed service. wasted too much time compiling and learning how to do stuff.
I give : out of
I found lot of the reviews on here inaccurate. They are actually not bad.....but imo a bit expensive.

I've made a great mistake when choose leaseweb. I'am already have 2 days delay for my unmetered server setup, made 4-5 phone calls to them, and every one of them i'am hear "tomorrow, mister, how we can help you?" it's 15 days as i wait already. I'am tired of that, so i decided to make a refund there. What do you think about fdcservers and their "100Mbit port - full duplex" is it really great? Anyone use it? What about support and set up time?

To start please take this in mind I have servers colo'd at FDC and have 0 problems, so i'm still all for fdc servers.
Here is my 24 hours review on my new vps server from FDC setup was quick less than 5hours after paying my invoice.
Now down to my problems. Off peak hours last night my VPS server was great 10 / 20mbits solid speed on sending data from the box today I am unable to get over 150kb/sec.
This doesn't help me since the nature of my business I need to transfer files fast between servers. The VPS speeds of 150kb/sec will be no use for my business if anything make our job harder.
These tests were taken using the internal fdc network transferring from the new vps to one of my 1gig fdc colos and other various servers I have on the FDC network.
After contacting fdc support about this speed issue they logged in and checked the speeds they did a download of the speedtest file from the fdc website around 30 - 40mbits. But they didn't test the outgoing from the server.
I received the response that I am sharing bandwidth on the node so speeds could vary so on there 100mbit unmetered vds package they are saying 150kb/sec is acceptable.
So basically after that my last response is if 150kb/sec are the speeds i can expect from a VDS then please cancel my server at the end of the billing period as the VDS will be no use to me.
So now I have been transferred to billing to cancel the vps at the end of the billing period.
So to sum it up, vps setup was fast and the vps runs great but don't expect the speeds you can get from one of there dedicated servers.

I have order 2 servers from ftp at October 12 2008, both are setup at same time!
At October 13, the general support tell me that server have been hacked? I haven't start using both servers, why them are been hacked? they said the problem is sloved... so ok...
I got plesk installed on both server, but both server ftp not working. the ftp module is installed but i cannot connect from anywhere on the work!
I create 4 new ticket to sales, general support and billing, but no one want slove the problem, they reply me like this:
""We offer only the default OS installs.
The helpdesk does not provide support in configuration of any software packages. You may however contact our managed services department at help@fdcservers.net for a price/availability quote. If you would like us to move your ticket to their department, please let us know.""
the server is setup error and got hacker attack it, they just leave it without doing anything, what should i do?
I already write a ticket to cancel servers, but until now no response!
I just want you guy to know, If alphared don't have problems, i will still stay with them! I will never use FDCservers any more!

I get like 25 kbps download speeds from my brand new fdcservers server (750+ kbps normally from my other servers) even though I'm the only user downloading from it and my U.S 100 mbit servers get less than 100 kbps too when they try to download from the fdcserver. and quite often there's 100% packet loss for 10 - 30 seconds. Very unreliable network. Also, they first installed the wrong OS in my server. I requested CentOS and they installed FreeBSD. At least they fixed that later on.
They don't have service level agreements and they don't guarantee any amount of bandwidth, they just make empty promises. Now I know why.

BurstNET or FDCServers for unmetered bandwidth?
I'm talking about the 100mbit shared bandwidth, who would you reccomend for this fdc or burstnet?
Also do you have any other solutions for cheap bandwidth as I'm trying to open a file hosting website like rapidshare and I'm looking for the cheapest bandwidth.

FDCServers offers a couple of bandwidth options:
100MBit Unmeterd
Gigabit Unmetered
Add $300 Monthly for 50Mbit Average
Add $500 Monthly for 100Mbit Average
To quote their TOS: 1Gbit Un-metered Service Plan: Each server is connected via private (non-shared) 1Gbit port to the FDC 81 Gbit backbone shared by all servers subscribed to FDC’s un-metered service plans. The bandwidth is NOT dedicated. Servers on the 1Gbit un-metered service plan can expect average 30000GB-50000GB/month throughput on outbound transfer (from the server to the internet) and up to 300TB/month throughput on inbound transfer (from the internet to the server);
100Mbit Un-metered Service Plan: Each server is connected via private (non-shared) 100Mbit port to the FDC 81 Gbit backbone shared by all servers subscribed to FDC’s un-metered service plans. The bandwidth is NOT dedicated. Servers on the 100Mbit un-metered service plan can expect average 10TB/month (10000GB/month) throughput on outbound transfer (from the server to the internet) and up to 30TB/month throughput on inbound transfer (from the internet to the server);
This is my current usage (increasing):
Max Avg Cur Total
To Internet 43.58 Mbits/s 14.02 Mbits/s 31.97 Mbits/s 1,969.8 Gbytes
From Internet 4.47 Mbits/s 573.4 Kbits/s 1.17 Mbits/s 79.0 Gbytes
TOTAL 48.05 Mbits/s 14.58 Mbits/s 33.14 Mbits/s 2,048.8 Gbytes
You can fing my MRTG graph here:
jebbe.com/bw.png
(cant use VB code < 5 posts)
They guarantee nothing, but what is the probability my site will suffer from a lack of bandwidth during peak ours? And what package would be right for me? Or should I avoid them and pick someone else?

dedicated server for my PHP/MySQL browser game. I've been working with CentOS 5/cPanel on my current server and I have no reason to change as it works very nicely. However I can only push 1500tb traffic per month with my current server and ideally I want to be able to push up to 5000-6000tb. Does anyone know of any reliable hosts with good uptime that provide high bandwidth packages such as FDCservers 100mbit Unmetered servers. I recently requested a custom quote from FDC but they never got back to me, would you recommend them?

Its a video and picture sharing website for India.
In the first 1-2 months, I will need around 250GB storage and 2TB bandwidth per month. After that, I will need much more. I have no idea how much I bandwidth may need. So I may go to a 50Mbps unmetered bandwidth; to limit my bandwidth cost.
My budget is around $400 per month. I want to have server(s) in west coast as it will be closer to India.
I have narrowed down to FDCServers and AlphaRed; as they both offer unmetered bandwidth for cheap. I will start with metered bandwidth and then go to unmetered bandwidth when my bandwidth demands exceeds.

I thought I would try the new "cloud" VPS service that WestHost is using to handle all their VPS customers now.
First, if you have a billing issue, expect at least a two day response time. I have had two questions for the billing department. The first was handled in two days with great apologies from the responder on the length of time it took to get back to me. I sent a followup ticket to the same billing department -- that was two days ago and still no response. So obviously, the apology was not genuine or they wouldn't have let it happen again.
Just wanted to make sure everyone understands that:
1) VPS.net has no refund policy in place. No refunds. I asked for one only one day after signing up, and the response is no refunds period.
2) My other hosting experiences allowed me to keep the same base price I signed up for as long as I maintained the hosting account with them. Not VPS.net. Pricing will change at their whim. If you sign up in April, you will receive a huge increase in May. Yeah, they say they "may" have some coupons or something in the future, but hey -- how can you budget your hosting expenses if you don't know what they will be exactly?
I have had accounts with a lot of hosting companies in my many years in this industry, but none as uncustomer friendly as VPS.net -- and its such a shame since their shared hosting sister company -- WestHost -- is famous for their customer service and friendliness.

This is a lesson for everyone, regardless of the type of hosting you're looking for, ALWAYS do your homework first!
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but in March I signed up with a hosting company based solely on the claims on their website, and their wonderful presales responses to my questions. The company is M6.net.
It started off well enough, sales responded to my list of about 20 questions, and I received my reply during the weekend, which impressed me because I thought I was going to wait until the following Monday to hear back from them. I signed up for their Designer plan, which offers 200gb storage, and 1.2tb of bandwidth, with a max of 17 websites.
I signed up for the account and waited. No account setup confirmation email, nothing. So I submitted a support ticket, and it was resolved quickly. So I'm on my way now. I'm a .Net developer, so the first thing I notice is that .Net is disabled on my account. So I submit a support ticket, it was resolved within an hour.
So now I go about checking on all the other things that are supposed to be included with the account, one of which was smartermail. It was setup using hoarde. So I submit a support ticket. Along the way, there were 3 or 4 other things that I noticed that weren't setup right and needed to be corrected, so I submitted support tickets. This was all on day 1.
Unlike the first 2 issues, rather than hearing that it's resolved, for all my subsequent tickets I get a response telling me that my issue has been escalated to level3. I don't know what that means because there's no explanation included, but I figure it must mean that my tickets are important.
I don't hear anything back the first day, which is acceptable, because my requests obviously require more attention than my first tickets. So the next day (day 2), I submit another ticket inquiring about the status of all my outstanding tickets. I get a reply telling me that they are working on them.
All of day 2 passes with no resolution on what should be fairly simple fixes. Day 3 rolls around, and that's when I started getting annoyed. I submitted, you guessed it, a support ticket asking for a status, and I get the same reply, "they are working on them". At this point I'm getting really irritated so I decided to call them to see what was going on.
This was where I started to see the light. A man answered the phone, I could barely understand him because he had a heavy accent (which is no problem in and of itself) but there was also a lot of background noise that sounded like a tv. He answered and mumbled a company name that I could not understand, but it was not "M6", when I replied to him "Oh, I'm sorry, I was trying to reach M6 tech support", he stammered a bit and said something to the effect of "Oh, yes, right, this is M6, can I help you?". To which I replied "No, I really don't think you can", and I hung up.
I had a sinking feeling in my gut, because I realized at that point what a mistake I had made. It was then that I started researching them and found one blistering negative review after another. So on day 3 I submitted a ticket (my last one I might add) and requested that they cancel my account and issue my refund per their 30-day money back guarantee.
I've yet to see the refund.
The fact that you're reading this shows that you're already doing the right thing. Read reviews, weigh the good against the bad, especially watch for hosts who care enough to log on and rebut negative reviews, and ask lots of questions here on WHT.

I've been using Xilo.net for just over a year now using a reseller account but the time has come to expand to a dedicated server. The level of support I've received from Xilo hasn't been 100% fantastic and my account is sometimes offline for one reason or another - impacting my sites.
I was just wondering if anyone else has any experience with Xilo and if so what your thoughts are on them? I read the other post from last year about Xilo being useless in setting up a VPN but just wondered if anyone else has dealt with them since?
I'm really not sure whether or not to stay with Xilo for a dedicated server or to move on.
