Where Do I Start To Improve Mysql Load
Nov 13, 2007
I have a cheap managed server and support is of little help BUT they will do what I tell them, where should I tell them to start to fix high mysql load?
The server currently has a large IPB forum, a large 4images gallery, and a couple popular Wordpress blogs, and this combo keeps taking mysql down.
What can I do server side to help this? And what shouldn't I do?

My server is a dual cpu quad core box. So I see 8 processors in WHM status page. Load is between 1-2 most of the time, sometimes a little bit above 2.
I've never used a dual cpu quad core machine before. When should I start worrying about the server load? When load is above 8 or what?

getting the following when trying to start mysql:
Quote:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists! mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "Warning, no valid mysql.sock file found.mysql has failed").
have googled this to death. solutions are not working.
so far have tried the whole linking mysql.sock to the file in /tmp, changing mysql root password, rebooting, adding socket parameters in my.cnf. nothing works!

What command could I use to see all the currently running services on my Windows (vista) computer?
I'm trying to start my MySQL server, but it won't start. I think I know what the problem is though I'm not sure. I think that the service name "MySQL" is already running...and I need to remove it or something.
Btw...my apache and php is fine. Though...I cannot use my MySQL from php obviously...since it's not running.

My MySQL server take too much time to start. I moved the data folder to its own hard disk, but still no improvement.
# uptime;date;service mysqld start;date;uptime;service httpd start
05:46:15 up 5 days, 1:24, 2 users, load average: 0.24, 1.07, 1.23
Wed May 7 05:46:15 CDT 2008
Starting MySQL: [ OK ]
Wed May 7 06:04:21 CDT 2008
06:04:21 up 5 days, 1:42, 1 user, load average: 1.77, 1.65, 1.50
Starting httpd: [ OK ]
#
You see MySQL take 18 minutes to start.
This happens whenever i restart the server or restart mysql.
Here is the process while MySQL starts
# ps aux|grep mysql
root 23549 0.0 0.0 4448 1168 pts/0 S+ 05:24 0:00 /bin/sh /sbin/service mysqld start
root 23556 0.0 0.0 4628 1272 pts/0 S+ 05:24 0:00 /bin/bash /etc/init.d/mysqld start
root 23613 1.5 7.5 157668 154580 pts/0 D+ 05:24 0:01 chown -R mysql:mysql /backup/mysql
root 23780 0.0 0.0 3896 664 pts/1 S+ 05:26 0:00 grep mysql
#
It is chown that make the MySQL startup slow.
MySQL data size is about 11 GB.

Does anyone have any ideas?
I did some pretty extensive searching...

how to tune linux (currently running fedora4) server to improve download speeds for the client. I have observed that if i download from sun it is very fast compared my own server which is hosted on cogent backbone or any other.
Please take into account that both mine and other server both are at relatively same number of hops and ping time. and my server and the carrier has enough bandwidth to fill whole 100mbps, even the client is a server which is on a different backbone which can fill whole 100mbps, also guys i was able to fill whole 100mbps while downloading from sun. but when i download test file from my server it is lagging at 3mbps around. only single thread using wget command. Now what is it i need to do to get my server able to push full pipe even for single thread, ping time is 25ms. if not full at least half. let me know if you have some workaround, and server is apache no load.

Recently we ordered a few servers with soft raid1, but seems the soft raid doesn't perform well, copy a 1G file, it takes about 40 seconds.
also sometimes it takes very very long time, I haven't count it, at least a few minutes, just like the server is dead.
I have run this command.
dd if=/dev/zero of=test.bin bs=1000M count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
1048576000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 1.14416 seconds, 916 MB/s
But obviously it takes more more than 1 second, why it shows only takes 1 second?
I'm using two ST31000528AS hard disks.

The newer Pentium 4 3.0 GHz processors had so called 'VT'-support. That's something every regular processor has nowadays.
I currently run a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz server without VT. Will there be a drastic performance boost if I use a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with VT?
What is VT anyways? I only know that Xen requires it if you wish to host a Windows Virtual Machine on a Xen Linux Server.

I have been reading quite a bit lately about the Internap FCP. I am wondering how much it actually improves network performance and how it compares to BGP4. We currently use BGP4, but are considering using a data center with the Internap FCP for a project for a client.
I am looking for reviews from others who have experience with the Internap FCP and it's performance. How does it compare to a network using BGP4? I know that FCP uses more intelligent routing than BGP, but how big of an improvement does it make?

As per topic, what is the best method to do to the hardware to improve bandwidth / uplink speed of server?
I have a production server that is used for regular file serving.
P4 3.0Ghz
4GB RAM
500GB + 160GB + 160GB hard disk
2Mbps Dedicated + 10Mbps shared.
However, the most I can pulled through the whole server is always between 1.5Mbps - 3Mbps, anyway to pull the speed up to around 10Mbps should there be availability of bandwidth for me to burst?
For any informations, the hard disk is SATA 2.
