Shared To VPS ..

Jun 26, 2008

I've been on shared hosting for 2 years and I'm experienced in Cpanel/WHM (mails,ftp,database..etc).

My question is that if I sign up for a FULLY Managed VPS hosting , will it be very easy to me getting up everything to work just like It used to be on my shared hosting ?
I'm not looking to have full root access and start modifying the system according to my preferences. I just need everything to be set up smoothly.

The purpose of my move to VPS is because I'm in need to start a social networking website which will be addressing a quite large number of traffic.

I just need to upload the script files, create the database, and setting up some mail accounts.

So with my previous experience in Cpanel, can I go ahead and start my vps hosting easily ? or there are tricks I need to be aware of ?

And finally, please recommend me the best between those hosts :
eurovps , vpslink or wiredtree.

VPS And Php.in Vs Shared

Mar 7, 2009

I'd like to install ACP because I have a account on the VPS with which I'd like to try it. The problem is that I already have Zend Optimizer installed (by default) and I've read that the two do not co-exist well together.

1) Is there a way to configure PHP such that ACP is only installed for this single cpanel account? or is the process of uninstalling Zend and then installing ACP a global thing that will have to affect all accounts?

2) Also, if I do go ahead and uninstall Zend, and then install ACP, but have a problem, is there a good way to reverse what I've done if there's a problem?

Clearly I'd backup php.ini, but other than restoring the VPS, is there an easier way to "go back to a restore point" (for lack of a better phrase)?

Shared IP And Other IPs

May 10, 2007

When I sign up for a hosting server, I was given 6 IP. One shared IP and a bunch of other IP. Usually, the other IP are series of numbers after the shared IP. If the shared IP is 55.55.55.51, then the other IPs are 55.55.55.52, 55.55.55.53, etc.

curiously I wrote this into test.php

<?
echo file_get_contents[url];
?>

Sure enough, the IP that shows up is the IP of my website.

The thing is the IP that hows up is always the shared IP.

For example, if one of the other IP is
55.55.55.52

and I type 55.55.55.52/test.php in webbrowser, IP chicken will still say that my IP is 55.55.55.51

So, what are the other IPs are for?

Any One Know How To Set Up Shared SSL On 1and1?

Mar 31, 2006

Hi Can anyone tell me how to set up shared SSl with that came with my 1and1 package please. I set up the shared SSl for one of my domains but don'd know how to do it so that when a person types in the normal domain name http: it automatically goes to the secure site. I rang technical support and they told me I would have to rename all my links to https://sslrelay.com/mydomain, there must be any easier way surely. My web developer has created all the site and I really don't want to change all the file names.

VPS, Professional Shared Or ...?

Nov 26, 2008

I have a Joomla website where I embed videos from Youtube and others video sharing sites hosted on a shared server. During the last month I got my account suspended because of high CPU usage.
That's a bit strange to me because the videos aren't hoted on the website. I have also uninstall some components (example JoomlaWatch that provide realtime stats) and things seems to go better untill yesterday when I got another notice from the server admin.

They have offered me an unmanaged VPS for 8/month ($12) or a managed one for around £30/month ($45). These are the features of the unmanaged one:

10GB Disk Space
200GB Bandwidth
256MB Dedicated RAM
512MB Burst RAM
2 IP Addresses Provided
CENTOS 5
LXAdmin Included Free

I'm looking for a new hosting as $45 are too much for my pockets and I'm not able to manage a server. The server must be managed...not sure if a "professional shared" or a VPS. These are my needs:

- Space: 512MB/1GB is enough
- Bandwidth: at least 70GB
- MySQL database (around 25 MB)
- Email
Some details about the site:
- around 1500 UV per day (this can go up to 5000 per day)
- bandwidth around 1.5/2GB per day
- users connected at the same time around 30 (max 100/150)
As stated above my current problem is about CPU and not users. In fact I got the high usage with only 20 users connected at the same time.

Anybody knows a good hosting where my site could work?

VPS As A Step Up From Shared

Aug 15, 2007

First I want to say hello and thanks for the great advice I've gotten on this forum. You guys have saved me a ton of time and heartache in regards to hosting accounts.

I was told by my hosting company that a VPS account isn't designed to be an step up from a shared account. I always viewed a VPS account as the intermediary between shared and dedicated. The hosting company basically told me that a VPS server is designed as a testing environment and you can run out of resources pretty quickly in a production environment.

Is that true? Or are they telling stories?

Shared SSL Certificates?

Jan 27, 2005

I do web hosting (reseller); how much, in USD per year, do you think is a "reasonable" fee to charge clients for a shared SSL connection ?

The SSL is going to cost me $$ per year and I may have some use for it, but if clients want a shared SSL, instead of buying their own, I need to apportion the costs I incur somehow, and (maybe) make some small profit. I see the shared SSL as more of a service, but clients should pay _some_ $$ if they want to use one.

Any ideas on how much I should charge, please ?

Thanks,

Peter

Moving From Shared To VPS

I am presently running a website at ICDSoft on a shared hosting account.

Here are the specs on the server where my site is hosted

Server has

Quote:

2 Quad-core Xeon processors
8 GB RAM
multi-terabyte RAID 6 disk array.

Now, I would like to know, if I move to VPS, which VPS plan would be the best.

How much should my minimum VPS ram be?

Are there any speed tests you would like me to run on my present server?

W/c Package Should I Take WHB VPS Or HG Shared

Jan 23, 2009

i would just like to have your good opinion on something....
Im currently at a loss to what kind of hosting package to choose.

WebHostingBuzz's VPS BRONZE Web Hosting
or

HostGator's ALUMINUM Reseller Hosting Package
i have a bunch of sites and some of them are hosted at WebHostingBuzz. One of them just got suspended. Heres what the email said....
*************************************

we have found your account to consume more than its fair share
of server CPU/Processor, Memory and Disk Bandwidth resources.

This results in sub-par server performance and is a violation of our Acceptable Usage Policy.

Your account appears to be resource intensive by nature and 9 times out of 10, this is down to the software and/or scripts used.
*******************************

(note that the said account only has a PHPBB forum with about 20-30 active members)
They suggested that i move up to a VPS.

So that's why im choosing between the two packages. One is their VPS and the other is a shared hosting.

VPS Faster Than Shared

Mar 9, 2009

I know the assumption is that VPS is faster than shared, but my site currently runs on a shared server with a host that does not oversell, and it runs very fast for a WordPress and gallery site.

I'm certain the shared server is at least a dual CPU monster, and it rarely goes above 5% usage. So if I move this site to a VPS it seems logical to me that it might not be as fast.

Shared? VPS? Dedicated

Oct 22, 2008

I would like to start a site for a gaming community. It will cover a few upcoming mods, so I don't know what to expect at the moment in terms of how much space/bandwidth I need.
The mods support the redirect feature, where if the player does not have the next map, it is automatically downloaded. This is where a portion of the site comes in. I would like to offer the downloadable content (maps/skins/etc.). Maybe looking at multiple users (possibly up to 20) downloading maps around 10-30MB each.

So what would be the best type of host to use in this case? Can I get away with using a cheaper host (shared, VPS)?

Shared, Reseller Or VPS

Aug 4, 2008

bext type of server to get for my current requirements please.

I need a server to host a simple company web site and our product which is also a web site.

The company web site will be set up soon but the product is still 5-6 months away from being put onto the market. So at present I need a server to host the web site and also need a place where I can host the web site product as I continue to develop it and upload files to the server.

Now ultimately the web site product will have a number of users (I hope!) will contain content including video presentations and will will have a forum so it's important that users have fast access to such material without having to wait.

I thought I would go for a VPS from a company called VT6 Internet who have had some good reviews on this forum.

My budget is around £70 ($140) per month.

However I'm now considering whether I might be able to save some money and go a for a decent (buy cheaper option) in the mean time while the product continues to be developed.

Such as a shared host or a reseller?

I would be really grateful for any advice from you guys please.

If you were in an early stage situation like mine would you go straight for a VPS or make do with a shared or reseller and upgrade as your company grows?

Shared SSL What Way To Setup

Jun 18, 2008

I am thinking about setting up a Shared SSL and would like to know, what the best way, is out of the 2.

1. Set it up and then give space on the account so it would be [url]
Or

2. Set it up so they use [url]

Pros and Cons

Way 1: If I set it up this way, I will need to setup each FTP account in cPanel manually from what I can see, which maybe a problem in the future.

Way 2: I think I would need 'PHP open_basedir Protection' turned off for this account for it to work.

VPS Or Shared Hosting ...?

Jun 20, 2008

I have decided to change my current webhost. Recently I have started seeing a lot of downtime. For a long time I was thinking about moving to a VPS. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience managing one. But I am willing to take any hardship to learn setting up and managing a VPS. The main set back here is that my budget is (very) limited (max $12/month). I have seen some hosts offering VPS for rates that are within the above budget.

Can you plz suggest which is better for me? Shared or VPS?

I own about 10 websites presently, but the number is going to increase as I am planning to take web designing seriously. But none of them are high traffic, infact my current monthly traffic is only 15-20GB.

What I want is a host that provide somewhat good customer support ( support ticket system that gets responded within an hour is fine with me), good uptime and allow me to host multiple domains hassle free.

From Shared Hosting To VPS?

Dec 10, 2008

I have been using a shared hosting. My current host has had some unreliable services from time to time in the past. Lately, the primary reason for my decision to leave my current host is that few (or more than few) of my paid subscribers and non-paid visitors said that my website has been down for some time or for weeks or more even *after* they were able to view the site; however, it IS up and running fine for the majority of the users and myself.

What are the possible reasons for being able to view the site for a while but then later find the site down to a few users for weeks or more but the site is up and running fine for most of other people and myself? The "down" shouldn't be "selective" to some people.

Before leaving the current host, I need to know why it happens so that I can choose the right host and the right plan (and shared hosting vs VPS).

More Shared Or More Reseller

Apr 27, 2008

I was just curious. When reseller accounts only cost another $10-15 per month, I was wondering if a lot of people just go straight to a reseller account, and don't bother with normal shared account. For me, I always get at least a reseller account, and haven't purchased a shared account in a few years now.

And I suppose there are two ways of looking at this:
1. Ratio of shared accounts to reseller accounts
2. Ratio of total domains on shared account to reseller accounts

Is there any sort of data on this?

Shared Hosting Or Vps

Oct 25, 2008

About two months ago, my site was hosted on a shared server. I had no problems on a shared server, but I felt like trying something new, so I switched over to a VPS. Right now I have a plan that offers 384MB RAM, 150GB bandwidth, and 15GB disk space. I do monitor my resources, and I'm finding out that I'm hardly using any RAM at all. I check the System Usage meter a couple times a day, and it's always at 100%. My CPU usage levels reach 10% at most.

Should I stick with this VPS or downgrade to a smaller plan? I'm obviously not using up all my resources, so I think it's kind of a waste to fork out $40/month for something I'm not completely using. I'm unsure on whether or not I should go for a smaller VPS or a shared server. I mostly want to lower my budget to a maximum of $20/month. If I do go to a smaller VPS, I would need managed services. For a shared server, I would need at least 100GB of bandwidth, PHP5, and SSH.

I am leaning towards going back to a shared server, but I would like some second opinions.

Moving From Shared To VPS

Apr 18, 2008

I had some very minor concerns with moving from an oversold, over-advertised, and overcrowded shared server (I'll save them another negative review) to an unmanaged VPS.

I believe I am technically capable. I have installed and configured software over SSH for my friend on his dedicated, I've played quite a bit with the Ubuntu Hardy beta and familiarized myself with Linux, and well, I grew up using a command line. (MS-DOS!)

However, I certainly don't know everything there is and I'd be doing quite a bit of learning along the way, to say the least.

So I guess the first question is "Do I sound ready"? I'll have to admit that I'll be put *slightly* out of my comfort zone by this, but I really see no other choice. I'm not going to risk moving to another shared host. By out of my comfort zone, I mean things like I'll be constantly afraid that I'll mistype a remove command and delete my entire server. You know, the little things. =p

So my next question is "Is it remotely possible I'll have a worse experience on even the cheapest VPS than I have on shared hosting?" I'm talking about server loads, download speed, customer service. I know not to expect a ton moving from say a $9.99 shared plan to a $15-$30 unmanaged VPS plan, but I certainly don't want to go backwards.

Some info about my site: ULTRA small vBulletin forum, little over 10K posts, honestly only about 30 really active members, total of users + guests online is rarely over 30. I honestly feel there isn't a NEED for a VPS, even a small one, but I like doing things myself and I'd hardly be paying any more money per month.

However, (and this is a big however) there have been a few occasions where I've been linked to directly from the Windows Media mainpage and our stats have skyrocketed. Are there VPSes that are going to shut me down for this? Even on the days which we've been linked to from WM, the entire monthly bandwidth hasn't even approached 50GB. It wasn't even an issue with my awful shared hosting. It does involve streaming media though, so I'm surprised this wasn't a problem.

There's a good chance I'll be linked to again, as we have an ongoing deal with another website, so if I was okay on a shared server am I going to be OK with the VPS I choose? (I will provide what VPS I am considering as a front runner, if anybody asks, but I really don't want to turn this into a discussion about the host I'm leaving and the host I'm running to)

I will provide *one* thing about my current host, and that's my server load averages over the past few hours...

Dedicated Vs Shared ....

Nov 23, 2008

creating a site where people will be able to upload videos (haha its much more specific like that lol not like YouTube or anything).

Anyway i've played around with shared hosting for a while, numerous other projects of mine, and all of them seem to have limits on how long a script can run etc.

So say I want users to be able to upload videos up to around 100MB, on a normal shared host they wouldn't be able to do this right? Mainly because the script would time out or CPU usage would be too high? The site is pretty targeted, so I'm not really expecting that many videos to be uploaded, and old ones could be deleted after use.

My question is, to do this properly, do i need to look into a dedicated server? I really don't know much about hosting etc, but it seems that most shared hosts have heavy restrictions on CPU usage.
