Level3hosting Experience

Nov 16, 2008

Tried them for a few hours, the services on the VPS were constantly crashing. I went ahead and reloaded centos, and started loading cpanel/whm. Midway into the install, i lost shell access. Not knowing what was happening i tried to ping my site, the ip was down. Tried to access level3hosting's site, it too was also down. Site came back up about 10 minutes later and when i inquired about what happened they insisted that there was no outage. I requested a refund under there 30 day money back policy. They at first refused, and then ended up giving me a refund after all. Right move on there part.

Level3Hosting: My 1 Month VPS Review

Feb 15, 2009

I have had a VPS with Level3Hosting for 1 month now and am happy to report that I am very happy with the VPS and the service and support. There was a couple of minor issues at first but these were quickly dealt with. The VPS is semi-managed and since I am quite new to the whole VPS thing I did have questions and concerns and Brian has always been fast to respond (where possible) and always been helpful and informative. Not all support questions were answered as fast as others but always easily within 24 hours and the higher priority ones answered sometimes within minutes. I had seen some negative comments about Level3Hosting here on WHT, as well as positive but I decided to go with what was advertised and so far am very glad that I did. Server uptime has been great (100% for me so far) and the VPS copes with what I have on it which is my own 4 websites and 4 radio ports all running 24/7 with no problems. I have searched for a cheaper deal that has everything I have now and no-one can come close, having said that, I purchased this VPS during the 50% off for life promotion so that explains a lot, however, even at full price it is still a good deal. So to summarise, my own personal experience of dealing with Level3Hosting has been a positive one and I hope that the service I get now is maintained and can continue for a long time as I will be a long term customer if it does.

CPanel Licence Deactivation

Apr 19, 2008

As of yesterday cPanel has deactivated the licence with a server for one of the companies I do the management for, We have raised tickets but all have been left unanswered.

The person who has deactivated the licence according to verify.cpanel.net has also been assigned to a raised ticket there by me, however they have left the ticket without any answer.

Two days passed and people are unable to login to their cPanels.

Other support personnel who are not familiar with shell have to use WHM and that is not now working obviously.

Windows / Sql Server / Exchange Licence Costs

Nov 9, 2008

We've been buying our Microsoft licences retail which was fine when we were a lot smaller. But as we grow I was thinking about the joining the Microsoft services provider licence agreement.

Can anyone out there give me an idea if this is a worthwhile route to take for a managed services webhost? If so what are the requirements, we aren't a Microsoft partner, have no Microsoft certifications, etc.

What are the initial costs? What are the long term costs?

Most Suitable Licence For Setting Up A Shared Hosting Server? (exchange, Sql, Dns)

Oct 8, 2008

I have built a server so I can co-locate it to be used for shared hosting. The specification is high, compared to most dedicated server offerings, so I was considering splitting it up into different virtual machines for different purposes. The specification is: Intel Xeon 3230 (4x 2.66ghz), 8GB DDR ECC RAM, Seagate Cheetah SAS 15,000rpm (4x 147GB), Adaptec RAID 5405 (RAID 6 Array with Battery Backup), Dual on-board NIC, etc.

The original plan was to use this machine as just one linux server, but I am concerned most of its potential will not be exploited. So I am exploring the possibility of setting it up as 2 Virtual Machines, installing Linux on one and Windows on the other. This way I can offer hosting for ASP and ASP.NET, and possibly MS SQL and/or Exchange depending on costs for their licences.

What Microsoft licences are suitable for servers used for shared hosting? From what I can gather there are several ways of being licenced, but I can't figure out which is the most cost effective. It seems you buy the server OS edition that supports your requirements, then pay another licence per user (CAL?) - I haven't got a clue how many users I will need to have though. Then if you want to use MS SQL, DNS or Exchange you need the correct edition - and buy licences for these too.

Does anyone know roughly what I should be looking to pay for what? I would ideally like to have MS SQL, DNS and Exchange - but am aware that the licence could be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth doing.
