Installing Mod_deflate On Apache 1.3.37

Mar 26, 2007

I am new to our own vps with cpanel (though used cpanel for years) and instead of just using the built-in script to install mod_gzip I wanted to use the special mod_deflate for 1.3.37 I've read about since it apparently is much faster

The problem is I've only compiled and built minor things before with step by step
instructions - and I realize this has the potential to hose my server so I want to make sure I do it right.

I found these instructions:
[url]

if I ignore the mod_accel bits, does it look like that would be fine on a regular cpanel setup?

I'm such a newb I am not sure even what location to unpack those tarballs so even more detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated if anyone is willing to share.

Zend Core / Mod_Deflate

Jul 29, 2008

Anyone have experience getting mod_deflate up and running on Zend Core?
(apache 2.2.4 / PHP 5.2.4)

If so, how did you do it? Seems Zend Core doesn't include mod_deflate.so by default.

Hacking Buildapache To Add Mod_deflate (for 1.3.37)

Apr 3, 2007

apparently a mod_deflate patch has been available for apache 1.3.37 for some time but since I rely on cpanel as a huge time/knowledge saver, I'd like to hack it into buildapache/easyapache so it's an option just as easy as mod_gzip is (with a simple checkbox)

after poking around I learned that all the magic happens in /home/cpapachebuild/buildapache
I've studied how mod_gzip is activated/installed but some steps are beyond me

mod_deflate for 1.3.37 is here [url]the critical files inside are of course mod_deflate.patch and mod_deflate.c

so I assume stick those files into a directory under buildapache, but where do I hack in the patch and build steps?

Mod_deflate Issues - Not Respecting MIME Types

Jun 8, 2008

I've got mod_deflate set up with Apache with the following line in httpd.conf:

Code:
<IfModule mod_deflate.c>
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css application/x-javascript
</IfModule>

It works well, for most things.

The issue I'm having is that mod_deflate is compressing binary data, outputted from PHP scripts as well (undesirable).

The script sends a Content-Type: application/octet-stream header, so I'm guessing that mod_deflate is simply not looking at headers generated by the script before compressing output.

I've even changed the default MIME type for Apache to application/octet-stream but to no avail.

Note that static content which has a defined MIME type doesn't get compressed - it's only the output generated by scripts.

Also, there is no defined MIME type for the .php extension.

I've also tried to disable the filter for certain directories, however, Apache doesn't seem to have an opposite to AddOutputFilterByType (although it does for AddOutputFilter (RemoveOutputFilter)). Also, I can't seem to stick in a negative <Directory> command either, which is a pain :/

I suppose I should put it in a usr/local/phpmyadmin folder.

Are there any other steps I must do to set it up to work? Note that I expect to use it to create and manage databases from my work computer. Is this the right tool?

Apache :: Installing PhantomJS On Server

I'm using PhantomJS on windows and accessing the files through command line. Now I want to install it on the server I'm working on local host so I want it to be installed on Apache, so that I may integrate Phantom with my html and PHP to be used within a web page. I'm using Windows 8.1 and Apache Server for localhost.

Can I actually do that? How to use it in web services now? How i will use it if I have to make my web online? should I have t ask my hosting provider to place this thing on server for me?

I'm using phantomJS to develop a web service which takes a url as input and returns an image file of the screen shot of the website.

Installing Httpd-devel Module On Fedora Updates Apache

to install mod_evasive module on our Apache2 that runs on Fedora server. However, for that we need Apache's apxs to compile it. We found out that we can do that by running the

yum install httpd-devel

We're kind of cautios, because we have never updated Apache on our live server. We'd prefer if we could download and install just the httpd-devel module. Is this possible?

If not, would this mess up any of our existing configuration? Could we expect any problems? And do we need to shut Apache down, then run the updates and only then restart it?

Installing GD Via WHM

Nov 12, 2008

Main >> Software >> Apache Update

I've read through a number of threads regarding installing GD. So sorry for yet another, but I just want to make sure that I'm doing this correctly.

As seen in the attachment below I'm presented with a few options:

Previously Saved Config (** DEFAULT **)
Basic (If your previous build has failed, please use this option)
No PHP
PHP Encryption / E-commerce
PHP Encryption and Image Manipulation
PHP Image Manipulation
PHP Security

Should I start by selecting the option "Previously Saved Config (** DEFAULT **)" and then "Start Customizing Based On Profile"?
I've walked through the steps doing the above and have a question about the last section. Viewing the Exhaustive Options List shows GD as already checked yet towards the bottom I see a checkbox with the following (second attachment below):
Quote:

Save my profile with appropriate PHP 5 options set so that it is compatible with cpphp

This option will make the following changes to your profile prior to the build:
Enables:

CurlSSL
FTP
GD
Gettext
Iconv
Imap
Mbregex
Mbstring
Mysql
Mysql of the system
PGsql
Sockets
Zlib

Should I check to save and then click "Save and Build" to get GD installed?

Some additional information: I have downloaded my default profile. (lol Let's hope I don't have to use it because I wouldn't know where to begin!)

My php.ini file shows that GD is not installed or at least not compiled (if that's the right word to use). To clarify, GD is not in the list.

I have tried yum install pgp-gd and get the following:

take out the <%php bit... and rename it as an asp file (just to be sure my /localhost settings etc were ok) and it works fine. It's clearly a php install error.. Where do I start looking?

I did search on the forum but failed to find any related thread...

Installing FFMPEG On VPS

Sep 25, 2006

We have a managed VPS, and have never needed on our own dedicated servers in teh past to have FFMPEG due to the line of data we host. So, I asked our provider to please install FFMPEG onto our server.

This is the response I have received:

FFMpeg requires PHP to be compiled as CGI (PHPsuexec) that is only officially supported by cPanel. So in order to install FFMpeg modules we have to resetup your VPS with cPanel.

Now our VPS is running Direct Admin on CentOS.

I am not trying to poke holes at our provider, just trying to find out if this is the truth, or if there is a work around that can accomplish this.

I do not want CPANEL on our account. We have two unix techs here at work, however unfortunately they are both off for two weeks as of middle of last week, so i'm caught with who to look for to gain a second opinion.

How does one install imagemagick?

I have read instructions on imagemagicks site, but don't see how I can upload files, and how to execute the commands that instuctions say to do.

Installing Hacked VPS

Jun 24, 2009

I had to reload my VPS cause I got hit with the LX admin exploit (Shocked cause the copy was over a year old)

But I'm not really server savvy, could someone possibly teach me the following.

How to install
apache
ftp
mysql
php

and how to secure the vps so it doesn't get hacked? Also is there any other free control panel to use? I'm really bad in shell, I can do basic stuff and if it's written in plain site I can easily do it. I've seen people here post these two,

ispCP
sysCP

Both look pretty nice, which one would be better do you think?
So if anyone could help me out with this that would be very nice and awesome of you. If I posted in the wrong thread mods please move it.

(I read the secure the VPS thread here already but my IP changes alot, the last 2 sets of numbers change daily)
