Mod_perl Stops Working When I Use RewriteEngine On
I have an account on my cPanel server with a cgi script in it wich works just fine under normal circumstances. I setup mod_perl and got it working just fine with the script. I edited the .htaccess file to do a 301 redirect and added the line “RewriteEngine on” and then whenever I try to access the cgi script I get: Quote: Forbidden You don't have permission to access……….. If I disable mod_perl or remove the line “RewriteEngine on” from .htaccess it works fine. In the cPanel error log I have: Quote: Options FollowSymLinks or SymLinksIfOwnerMatch is off which implies that RewriteRule directive is forbidden But in htaccess I already have the line "Options +FollowSymLinks" which is part of the 301 redirect code.

VPS Suddenly Stops Working

Weird MySQL: User/pass Stops Working After A While
I am having a very strange problem with 2 different cPanel accounts on a server with 500-600 accounts. For some reason after a day or two the mysql username/password stops working. We have tried changing the MySQL user and the password with no success. The log does not indicate that the MySQL password was changed in any way. Only these 2 accounts are affected and this problem occurred at least half dozen times each. Again: these are two different accounts with 2 different MySQL users that after a while stop working (I am unable to determine if they stop working at the same time b/c they belong to different customers). When we reset the user (with the same pass) it works for a day or two. I have checked to connect not only from PHP but also from shell when it's down: it also doesn't work so this is a pure MySQL problem. Also on the server we have Fantastico.

PhpMyAdmin Not Working
My PhpMyAdmin is not working properly. Everytime I try to use it, it tells me: "Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly." My PHP install is perfectly fine, and session support is enabled.

I received email from my cpanel server as follow: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on server.domain.com! While processing the log files for user xxxx, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 18:46:25 up 59 days, 13:16, 0 users, load average: 2.24, 2.23, 2.25 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load So what does this mean? and how can i check out this? how to reduce the cpu usage? Where to see the current usage?

PhpMyAdmin, CPanel And Remote Database
I've just purchased a second server of which I wish to use a database server for a number of my databases and I'd like manage it remotely (from the web server) via phpmyadmin. I've configured my firewall and granted access to the web server on root@webserverip and also username@webserverip (username being just one of the database accounts I wish to grant access in order to test this). Accessing mysql remotely from the webserver now works on both accounts (via ssh and php). However, having configured the phpmyadmin config file to include the ip (network ip) of the 2nd server I am unable to see the 2nd server when logged in to phpmyadmin. I just have the usual root@localhost and username@localhost.

Cpanel Not Working... Need To Backup
As a background: They had uptime problems, which have since been resolved, however now they seem to have let their cpanel license lapse. Neither I, nor my clients (nor anyone else on the server, according to their forums), can log into CPanel or WHM, getting the error "Cannot read license file." In the beginning they kept saying it would be fixed in 24 hours. 3 weeks later, still waiting. At any rate, our biggest issue right now is that cpanel has not been working since the first week in July. I make weekly full backups, sent via ftp to a remote server, of all my client sites with a cronjob. Since cpanel has been offline, I haven't had a backup since July 1. I'm doing a straight FTP of all the sites' data individually to my hard drive as I'm not sure what else to do to back up their stuff. I guess my question is: If I have to resort to finding a new host (which, if this doesn't get resolved soon, I'll have to), will these straight FTP backups be enough to restore the sites, including mysql data, email accounts, cgi sections, .htaccess/.htpasswd files, etc? What about WHM data for my reseller account? My assumption is that this will be a lot more work, but hoping it's not my only option.

Cpanel And Mail Not Working
I set up a new account the other day and everything was set up as normal. My client cannot recieve their emails through outlook express and I cannot open their cpanel thrugh their url. CPanel Stopped Working In Vista
Yesterday I could reach all of my cPanels on a Vista laptop; today they all time out. I can reach them with other computers. It doesn't matter if I go to mysite.com/cpanel or mysite.com:2082. I even added a port 2082 under Windows Firewall; no change. I'm not using any 3rd party firewalls. I did install a bittorrent client last night, then uninstalled it when it didn't work.

CPanel- Accounts Transferred, Email Not Working
I tranferred all my accounts from my old cpanel server to my new one, Updated the DNS records with my registrar to the new ips, unfortunately e-mail is not working, i used the trouble shooter and seems to trying to relay or something my mail to the old IP. I keep getting this error when trying to send to an account IPdoes not like recipient. Remote host said: [IP DOMAIN] is currently not 550-permitted to relay through this server. Perhaps you have not logged into 550-the pop/imap server in the last 30 minutes or do not have SMTP 550 Authentication turned on in your email client. Giving up on [IP].

HTTPS Not Working - Cpanel Based Site
Today, I've purchased a RapidSSL Certificate for my site with Cpanel and https:// access did not work. What I did was :- 1) Generate a Private Key 2) Create a CSR Request Certificate 3) Submit that and installed the Certificate in WHM for the site. The site is running on a dedicated IP and it works as http:// but not with the https:// . I checked and Cpanel did include the SSL directive for the site in httpd.conf and have rebooted the server and restarted httpd but to no avail. I also had OpenSSL 0.9.8.3a installed and update WHM. The Apache 1.x was installed with OpenSSL Support too. Is there a SSL Server or something which may not be active ?

CPanel/WHM Server - Email Not Working
Just got a new server online this week from VolumeDrive, and everything has been going just fine with my initial setup. I transferred over 7 domains from another cPanel/WHM machine and the transfer feature worked flawlessly. Since I use Gmail for most of my communication, I haven't even had any email accounts setup on any of my domains in quite sometime. So knowing that I need a few setup for various correspondence, I went ahead and set one up tonight. I've setup and used mailboxes on cPanel machines before, and it's not exactly rocket science... pretty easy stuff. But what's weird here is that when I attempt to click on the "Webmail" icon from directly within cPanel, the Horde login fails over and over again. Then, if I setup the account in Thunderbird or Outlook using the CORRECT account information (username@domain.com as the login -- and the appropriate password/server settings), the client login fails also. To add to this weird behavior, I sent myself an email at the newly setup address with a 2mb attachment. Obviously I can't login to the account to see if the mail arrived, but at least it didn't bounce. However, when I'm in cPanel under this domain and go to "Email Accounts", I'm showing "0 Bytes" for usage under the account where i know there should be at least 2mb worth of usage.

Apache Stops Responding
I have a very strange problem. Yesterday morning I got a "server down" alert. Restarted httpd and everything run ok ... until today morning, the same problem again. Symptoms: 1. The webserver did not stop working, it just took too much time to respond. 2. I cannot find anything suspicious in the logs. 3. I started to log the number of apache processes in 4 minutes interval, it did not increase during the failure but remained at a very reasonable number. 4. Now, almost 3 hrs from the last failure, there are 36 apache processes, each eating 14M RAM, server has 4GB ram total, no swapping, almost 3GB are free (cached). The question is. How should I prepare for the expected tommorow failure, to be able finaly localise the problem?

Website Stops Responding
I have 3 servers ServerA(Web, mail), ServerB(MySQL+Master replication), ServerC(Mysqlslave+web) It happens that my website stops responding for few mins and then it comes back again automatically. I checked the server logs but I couldn't find any suspicious. Also, while the website is not accessible when I try to connect internally from ServerC to ServerA or ServerB using SSH. It takes lots of time (approx more than 60 seconds) to connect. When website starts working SSH is also working fine. This is very complicated for me. Can anyone let me know what should be the problem or how can I find root cause of this problem?

VPS Stops Running Randomly
The problem is that it switches from running to mounted without me having anything to do with it. It seems to be quite randomly, for example this morning at 1.42 am. This happens once a day and stops my vps and therefore my website - which is quite annoying. I checked for log files or anything, but there was nothing mentioning resources or anything. Does anyone have a clue what this might be? If I cannot fix the problem there is still the opportunity to just start the vps once it goes to status mounted. How would I automate this? I am using Virtuozzo and Plesk.

MySQL Stops Allowing External Connections
Recently I've upgraded my MySQL server. I connect to it via a conection from NIC to NIC (Internal IP addresses). Since the upgrade/format, I've managed to get everything back to the way it was. Everything works fine for 15-20 minutes. Then the PHP server can no longer access the MySQL server. I tried logging in from the PHP server, I get access denied. I then tried logging in locally, on the MySQL server and I get in fine... It's not like it's a firewall issue though, it's strange... I tried updating PHP/MySQL to a few releases, even the RC's to no avail... Something to note is that when I try restarting MySQL it can take 4-5 minutes, sometimes not even complete.

MySQL Database Service Stops From Running

Read Only Filesystem
I have a server with pacificrack. When I see my website it says "Read-Only File system" and my SSH dies with read-only file system errors. It happens once per month, and the bad thing is I'm sleeping when it happens so I don't know my server is in this state. Even though support fixes the problem within 15minutes of my support ticket, my server is down for hours because I don't know its down to then raise a ticket. I asked support why it happens and they never tell me... just tell me to read the logs but I'm not technical enough to understand linux logs etc. Server is centos.

Filesystem Became Read-only
Somehow the filesystem on my server turned read-only. The databases would not connect. When I rebooted the box it would not come up. Support had to run FSCK. Server Became Read Only System
I had a linux server (CentOs 5, mysql5, php5, directadmin). I had problems with apache few days ago, that's why i hire sys. admin who tweak the system (install the PAE kernel), and some more configurations, and during last 7-8 days server work w/o any downtime (before this server had 1-2 downtimes per day-> OOM killer.) Now i had only ssh access (emails, directadmin access - give "wrong password" answer). As told my sys.admin It became read only system. To Read Ftp Log
We have been working on a site for a while, couple of days ago I copied the source from the server - as there are few people making the changes to it - to get a fresh copy. Yesterday I was blasted by my client that I have deleted files on the server and it had caused the site to go in disarray and they had to upload everything again. I just thought I would riase an issue you with you about the following host: hostvector.com hostmds.com The reason: I have received a number of e-mails over the last 2weeks that look like they are from my bank asking me to log-in and update my security information. I no my bank doe's not ever do this so I contacted them. When sending on the mail to them, they where able to trace the e-mail and it took them back to the address listed above using the e-mail account psychic@sabre.hostvector.com. So before you hand over your bank account details to them I highly recommend that think twice.

What Happens If You Forget To Read TOS
About a month ago, I searched desperately for days to host my social networking site and file hosting site. Thankfully I found Wiredtree(WT) to be suitable for my budget. I signed with them with their entry plan of $44.10 and was happy with their service. The customer support was extremely helpful and they did everything to make my life better. Nevertheless my project didn't turn up as expected and I decided to close the hosting. Just a day before the end of one month of hosting, I wrote to them asking to close the account and also congratulating their service I also told them I would look forward to host with them in future and would recommend them. I expected a warm termination without any hassle. But i got a mail quoting their TOS (which says I should inform them 7 days in advance) and asking me to pay up another month's hosting fee before I can close the account. Along with it was a note from the staff to use the client portal to contact Billing Department directly to close the account (hmmm would they ask me to contact sales department directly if I tell me I want to add new server?). What hurt me was not the extra $44.10 which I will pay them anyway, but what they could have done was to understand my genuine case(first time customer). Tell me, how many of us read the TOS really. I requested them not to charge me, but got same cold response asking me to adhere to the TOS. On the other hand my experience with other host (PM me if you want to know who) was one of awe and amazement. I wrote asking them the price I should pay to have more bandwidth. To my surprise I got extra bandwidth absolutely free though it wasn't mentioned such things in their TOS. Well I learned a lesson today not to forget the importance of TOS and i am sure new webmasters will find this post useful. This thread is not against the WT service. But a warning to new webmasters who might miss the fine print.

Anyone Know How To Read Email Headers
I'd love to contact the domain registrars of the recipient spammers who are barraging me with the latest "google riches", or "ebay success" sales pitch emails, but I lack the knowledge of how to reveal the email headers and interpret them. Is there a particular email client program that would allow me to view all parts of the email ? Maybe I'm using the wrong client (outlook), that would not allow me to view the more technical parts of the email, but but I don't know. If I go ahead and click on their "unsub me" links at their bottom, that's their tricky way of finding out what emails are active and possibly make it worse for me. I know that it's illegal to send me email that I didn't opt into, in the first place, even if they do provide the unsubscribe link at the bottom, with the usual "Icann" spam disclaimer that they include.

Read-only System 3rd Time
I have brand new server with CentOS 5.3 and latest CentOS kernel (2.6.18-128.1.10.el5PAE). I have brand new HDDs with no errors (HDDs have only 1000 power-on-hours, server CPU temperature is normal - between 35-42 C). My server went read-only without any reason. I need to fsck main / partition (/home is separated) and it cleaned journal, then server became online. After 2 weeks it happens again - I did again fsck on / partition and it recovered journal as before. I decided to ask Data Center to replace RAID-1 card and memory - they did it. After 3 weeks server went read-only again. I ssh into server and saw that kswapd0 process is using 100% cpu and load is over 170. After fsck it recovered journal on / and server is again available.

Onboard Raid 1 (Read Only After Testing)
I have a server with 2 hard drives. 1. I configured the onboard Raid 1, both as Volume0 I installed CentOS successfully. So I tested the RAID to see if the mirror really works 2. I took out hddA and boot hddB as single drive. it work! 3. Then I took out hddB and boot hddA as single drive. it work! 4. Then I plug back hddA & hddB back together & boot it up It gives me many error screen, I had to login as repair screen with root password. It says everything is read-only. So I try to remount but it fails #e2fsck -y /dev/sda1 #mount -t ext2 -o rw,remount /dev/sda1 / #mount -n -o remount ext2 /dev/sda1 / #mount -o remount,rw / None above works. I wonder if I am not suppose to do that way the first place?

How to fix that? Is it really open_basedir value is ignored by susphp? It works fine if I remove suphp and run scripts with nobody uid.

NYNOC Exit Review - Read Before Purchasing
As many of you may have already read my initial review or the New York NOC I wanted to leave an additional exit review of the company and share a personal recommendation. It started a little over a month ago when I jumped VPS providers and initially purchase 2 VPS plans . Initially the boxes were rock solid. I could get to my websites, admin area, and have support tickets responded to in a timely manner. Roughly a week later I ended up moving another site to it’s own VPS . This is when I noticied my first issues. CONSTANT ERROR MESSAGES stating the backend was down and to please restart it. I would launch a support ticket, roughly 2 hours later the backend would be rebooted and I could once again access the admin panel and do what I needed to. Like clockwork when I would try to login again later to my admin panel I would be hit again with the backend was down (hypervm would be in a constant refresh). Sometimes my sites would remain online and sometimes they would go down too. This got frustrating but was bearable (I thought). Within a few days I see a BIGGER problem arise. I woke up one morning to find error alerts coming in and realizing 2 VPS’s had been offline for hours on end. I again launch another support ticket for the backend to be rebooted. I get a response everything is ok so I go about my day. I later receive an e-mail stating all of my sites were showing a mysql connect error and panic. Come to find out they had corrupted this time when the backend went down, I repair and optimize and everything is ok. VERY next day I wake up and check my nightly logs to make sure the nightly backup was loaded onto my home server. I don’t see it and find I received an e-mail from lxadmin stating it could not backup the database. Once again…..corrupted. This has been going on since that time frame on almost a daily basis. The backups are iffy if they will come in since when the backend gets overloaded and crashes in the middle of the night, it immediately corrupts all db’s on the VPS. I could understand 1 VPS doing this…..but 3? Come on…. Now comes Thanksgiving, my boxes go down for roughly 5 hours before reboot and once again I have to repair them on a blackberry with ssh since I am away (never fun to type that on a bb). I am back online and go about my day…….then…..Friday. My box goes down at 5pm…..I send in a support ticket to have it rebooted. The next morning at 11am it finally gets turned back on and I get a response that it must have been on my end since everything looks ok from there (granted 3 monitoring services were all showing it down). Once again…..corrupted. I rebuild and think the SLA was 99.9% so I send in a nice message to ask about it. Here is the response: Posted: 11/29/2008 12:33 Hey Guys. [url] So……99.9% SLA does not cover if no one is in the datacenter to reboot the box because it is off-line…..I thought SLA’s covered your box being on-line, am I wrong? So now after too many corruptions to count, support taking longer and longer in between responses I am left looking over my books. Last year alone between Thanksgiving and the following Sunday I brought in roughly $2300 dollars in sales. This year for the past 4 days I have brought in $10…… I have had some longtime recurring customers so I asked them for any feedback on what we could do to earn there business again. Out of 40+ people all but one stated that if I could fix the sites downtime they would return (the other responses was of course to lower prices). Second suggestion they had was to fix my e-mails from ending up in their spam box. Yes I was sold ALL dirty ip’s which had all been blacklisted. Some major isp’s worked with me and allowed me in…(some) Before I get flammed for choosing these guys, they truly were great up front so obviously I got fooled. I have no doubt they are great for some people but I simply can not drive my business into the ground because I went cheap and in the end got what I deserved. I moved to futurehost today and almost **** myself when a response ticket was answered in under a minute (kinda scary for a low priority ticket). With this said, before you consider NewYorkNoc simply ask yourself if your business or site is important to you, if you can afford to lose business, and if you want constant downtime along with mysql corruptions daily. I am not saying they are the worst as they were helpful at first. Just EXPECT that when the deal is that good, you are being oversold. There is no other explanation in my books. To sum this up: Uptime: 3 out of 10 (there were up sometimes) Customer Service: 2 out of 10 (would have given higher I did not have to repeatedly e-mail over the backend issues) Price: 10 out of 10 (admit it, the price point these guys have is good) Value: 1 out of 10 (I made a bad choice, I lost a ton of money in business and now have to work hard to recover my losses and rebuild relationships) Recommend to others: 2 out of 10 (why 2? This place might be good for offsite backup maybe?) This review is NOT out of spite due to my recent downtime. This review is merely my opinion and personal experiences and not written to bash NYNOC. If your happy with them then you are doing well. If you are considering them…….I urge you to think elsewhere. All my data is off the VPS and I am running before the backend crashes again corrupted my DB’s.

How To Change Permissions Of A Read Only File System
I have a dedicated server and till few days back i was able to edit my files fine but this morning when i am trying to edit any file, it gives me back this error: [user@domainname theme]$ chmod 777 header.php chmod: changing permissions of `header.php': Read-only file system [user@domainname theme]$ [root@domainname theme]$ chmod 777 directoryy chmod: changing permissions of `directoryy': Read-only file system [root@domainname theme]$ I tried both as normal user and root and same results. Do you think the hosting guys changed the permissions of the file system or something?

How To Read Remote Non-HTTP Text Files
I'm working on some PHP intranet tools. I'm still somewhat new to PHP, having come from an ASP background; been doing PHP for about a year now. The tools used to be located on a Solaris box, which is running PHP 4.2. One of the tools checks text files in a particular location on the same box that are generated by another process. The text files are found and parsed by locating a particular directory and looking through the entries for filenames matching a particular pattern; they may or may not be present depending on the success of the other process. The text files and directory are not in a web-servable location (i.e. they can't be reached via HTTP or FTP). I am now able to migrate to a new Windows 2k3 server running IIS 6. I've configured it with PHP 5.2.5 and it is successfully serving web pages. I need to migrate these tools over to the new server but they still need to reach the text files on the old server. The old server has a Samba share hooked to the directory I need and I can successfully map it as a mapped drive from the Win2k3 box. It's my understanding (after hours of googling and testing) that mapped drives are specific to the logged-in user and not to the machine in general, so IIS can't see them (which seems to be validated by my tests). I've pulled in the mapped drive to the Samba share as a virtual directory under IIS but PHP scripts still can't see it. The share is not available under FTP or HTTP, so cURL doesn't seem to be an appropriate solution, as far as I can tell. It's also my understanding that mapped drives aren't dependably re-mapped after a server reboot until the user logs in, and of course there won't necessarily be users logging into the server to create the mapped drives after a reboot. So mapped drives seem to not be a solution either. One person from another forum (not SitePoint) suggested running the IIS process under the domain login credentials used to get to the Samba share, and find a way to map the drive automatically after a reboot (some sort of Windows service that would call a batch file or something). I'm not comfortable using a domain login to run my IIS under (although I tried it and it didn't seem to work for a previously-mapped drive). So my question is: is there a way from PHP to connect to a remote Samba share, provide inline credentials, and use functions like is_dir and file_get_contents on files in that share? I'm not a PHP guru yet, but I've successfully set up the server, create and use remote MySQL databases, write my own JavaScript and Ajax, and don't consider myself to be a newbie - and I simply can't find a good solution for this problem. I come from an all-Microsoft background where integrated authentication was the intranet standard and issues like this simply didn't come up. I hope this is the appropriate forum to ask...the server forum was the second runner-up but after looking at threads there they didn't seem to address issues like this.
