Chrooting Apache2 In Ubuntu Lamp Installation
May 11, 2008
I've got ubuntu 6.02 server CLI edition running in test.
I was following the guide at [url]but its about 4 years out of date.
Does anyone know of any decent guides for chrooting apache2 under a LAMP install on ubuntu?

I would imagine there's a source for this but google's not yielding much. I'm looking for a CD/DVD ISO that will essentially auto install and configure a linux box with at least SSH access so I can manually install the rest.
I know bluequartz does this, put the CD and the install auto configures pretty much everything. Where would one find one click install discs for either CentOS or debian/ubuntu?

Installing Plesk Panel with Spamassassin on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS gives a significant error:
Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No /usr/bin/perl found running; none killed.

invoke-rc.d: initscript spamassassin, action "restart" failed.
dpkg: error processing package sa-compile (--configure):
even though spamassassin (i.e. spamd) is not running. The usual suspects for the before mentioned error, being
a) differences in the name of the PIDFILE variable in /etc/default/spamassassin and /etc/init.d/spamassassin
b) directory and/or file location are not readable/writable
are not causing this specific installation bug. The work-arounds:
1 - not installing spamassassin (not an option)
2 - installing spamassassin and (afterwards)
change /etc/default/spamassassin, add the option "-4" to the line OPTIONS, resulting in the line: OPTIONS="--nouser-config -4 --username=popuser --daemonize --helper-home-dir=/var/qmail --virtual-config-dir=/var/qmail/mailnames/%d/%l/.spamassassin --create-prefs --max-children=5"
run plesk-installer or autoinstaller again ..Work-around 2 works fine, after reinstallation the /etc/default/spamassassin is as it should be (note that the added "-4" is not present anymore).
The before mentioned work-around suggests some error in the installation process, very likely to be an issue with the chronological order of installation of the various components. In theory, it can be excluded that this bug/issue is caused by psa-spamassassin and/or spamassassin (version 3.3.x) packages, even though some current spamassassin bugs are known: URL....I sincerely hope that Parallels Team can investigate and patch both of the bugs/issues.

on a fresh installation of Ubuntu (at first 14.04 but on 12.04 the same problem occurs) I installed Plesk via the autoinstaller. It seems to be all fine except I cannot open Plesk in the browser.
The web browser shows "502 Bad Gateway", a look into the error_log at "/var/log/plesk/sw-cp-server" shows the following error:
Code:
2014/08/11 09:37:22 [crit] 4988#0: *4 connect() to unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock failed (2: No such file or directory) while connecting to upstream, client: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, server: , request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock:", host: "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8443"
So the problem seems to be the sw-engine service that cannot be started.
If I try to start it manually with `/etc/init.d/sw-engine start` it just fails:
Code:
* Starting Plesk engine pool manager sw-engine-fpm [fail]
Where to find any startup error log for sw-engine, where I could find any further information.

way to create a VPN tunnel between two ubuntu servers?
Both will be in seperate datacentres but I'd like a secure tunnel so I can setup jobs to backup to one another.
This has to be done on the server level and cannot be done at the router/firewall as I do not have access to this kit.

I'm making the switch from windows to linux for our company web server. We've been running IIS/MySQL/PHP for years and with the OS cost to upgrade the server switching to Linux seems an obvious choice. What frustrates me is that none of the Distros seem very quick to use the latest versions of the AMP components and compiliing from source seems an unnessary hassle. I've tried Ubuntu server so far which has Apache 2.2.9/Mysql 5.0.67/PHP 5.2.6 with no room to easily upgrade any of the components (our WIMP server uses the latest MySQL/PHP).

I'm setting up a VPS server on Slicehost, I've followed the guide on howtoforge for debian and have everything installed including ISPConfig3. Everything seems to work fine at the mo but when I check the memory usage, i see that I'm using around 490/500mb of my 512mb setup. Its a Xen setup so I understand this is real memory available but I'm not sure if this is enough.
I will ultimately be running around a dozen sites, some static and some dynamic. There's one Mambo and one Joomla site there but they don't update. The rest are all php/mysql sites that I've built myself but again, they don't change that much. None of the sites currently see more than a couple hundred uniques a day, and some only a handful, so usage is not high. Most of the domains have e-mail accounts attached, but its only moderate usage with around a dozen addys per domain max.
So, do I need more memory or will 512 be enough? Is there anything I can do to reduce the load and give myself some more room?
I'm moving from a shared hosting environment and while I'm comfortable setting up the server, I would rather have a simple mail manager that would give users more control over their accounts, change passwords etc, which I'm hoping ISPConfig3 will be able to help with, but thats probably best discussed in another post.

Typically, I am looking for LAMP+standard tools, e.g. FTP, SSH, mail, etc.
I tried to create one myself, but the configurator seemed to ignore my specifics and install large groups of stuff anyway.

Do you realise that the x64 Opteron is needing an avarage 1.7 %MEM for each Apache process while the Xeon just needs 0.5 %MEM?
Since both use the same version of phpBB and the same version of CentOS5, while the only difference is one is x64 and the other i686, I wonder if this has to do with the way memory is handled by the x64 CentOS5.

We have a spare powerconnect server in work and i was looking to set it up as a web server for a company intranet - more to gain experience in configuring a web server than anything else.
I decided to go with Fedora 8 as i'd used fedora previously and followed the LAMP tutorial on HowToForge.
However i've come across a problem which i just can't seem to resolve (after pretty intensive searching). So, i guess this post is in 2 parts.
Firstly, the error i'm getting is with mysql only. The error message is:
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
I understand this may be a generic error but i'm not sure what other information would be useful.
Secondly, as this is my first web server - have I made the correct choice in terms of linix release or would something like CentOS be more suitable? I'd like to get this right from the start now that i have the chance.

to set up a little server that will have LAMP installed on it. All it will do is host a small program that runs on PHP and mySQL and will only be used on an office network with about 50 employees.
How well would this server run if the hardware was rather modest (667Mhz, 128mb RAM, 10GB HDD)?

I want to run a firewall on my LAMP server. I'm using Ubuntu 6.10 server. Previously I used firehol to achieve this but the new version of the kernel I'm using doesn't seem to be compatible. So I went to try ipkungfu instead and that didn't work saying "my kernel doesn't support LOGS". So basically I'm going to need to play around with iptables myself. I've been reading up on TCP/IP in order to learn how to do this but, well, it's really not very much fun. SoDoes anybody have a bunch of iptables commands I can use to set up a basic firewall to block all requests except certain ones (I don't need anything complex like forwarding)?

Usually our website traffic is about 50 MB/day in our dedicated server. From these past 2 days it's consuming 5 GB/day and Apache2 opens so many processes/connections that our router can't handle and turns our WAN/LAN extremely SLOW!
If the reboot the server, it calms down but soon the apache2 starts again to open the connection (+1000).
Can this be a worm? I'm using Ubuntu Server 8.04.

I have a problem. When MSN Search robot looks through my VPS, the machine is going "asleep", e.g. Apache2 (Port 80) doesn't answer at all. Here is the last falling:
Code:
23:14:15 up 4 days, 9:06, 5 users, load average: 37.18, 31.25, 27.46
I hardly ever can enter 'pkill apache2' to kill Apache2 processes. Here is my Apache2 configuration (timeouts, prefork, e.g.):
Code:
Timeout 30
KeepAlive On
MaxKeepAliveRequests 20
KeepAliveTimeout 5
<IfModule mpm_prefork_module>
StartServers 2
MinSpareServers 2
MaxSpareServers 5
MaxClients 10
MaxRequestsPerChild 400
</IfModule>
Maybe I configured Apache2 wrongly, but I only want to prevent this bad thing.

I just wondered if anyone can help me out with an Apache problem. I currently run Debian 3.1 (on 10 GB space and 256 MB of RAM) with Apache 2.0.59 installed through apt-get.
Apache runs with 10 child processes running simultaneously to handle multiple requests at once. I have set up Apache to use virtual hosts for every single account since they are hosted on their own domains/subdomains.
I put in a crontab to restart Apache every 15 minutes. The reason being is because after a while, Apache will start lagging to display web pages. When it's restarted, it works just fine and fast. After roughly 10 minutes now, it will take roughly a minute for the request to finally send the data back to the browser. It's not the web page that causes it, it's Apache or some factor effecting it's performance.
Does anyone know what the cause may be or how to fix it? Personally, I think it might be a memory issue.

In SSH, I send a restart command and it tells me it's still running but then it says when I restart it again that it wasn't running.
My main concern is fixing Apache from showing this error and from crashing so much. I did some research and through inconclusive evidence, it seems like a crontab error (ironically Apache doesn't use any cron jobs I can see).

I have apache2 and I have minimal webmin 1.330 installed at /webmin/
Following this tutorial: [url]
I have done the commands it asks and I have added this to my sites-available:
Quote:
<VirtualHost _default_>
ServerName panel2.ipalaces.org
ServerAdmin admin@ipalaces.org
DocumentRoot /webmin/
DirectoryIndex index.cgi index.html
<Directory /webmin/>
Options ExecCGI
AuthName Webmin
AuthType basic
AuthUserFile /etc/webmin/htusers
require valid-user
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
and added this to apache2.conf:
Quote:
SetEnv WEBMIN_CONFIG /etc/webmin
SetEnv WEBMIN_VAR /var/webmin
SetEnv SERVER_ROOT /webmin
SetEnv MINISERV_CONFIG /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf
Am i doing this right? I want to be able to access webmin from the URL panel2.ipalaces.org.
I did
Quote:
htpasswd -c /etc/webmin/htusers brian
and then set a password as "test" for brian. However it won't login.

got the VirtualHost entries for Appache, so each Domain points to a folder.
The (Windows-)DNS runs on the server, means i have to create a new DNS Reverse-Lookup and Folder for each Domain seperatly, but this workflow appears to be pretty stupid..
Now my question:
Anyone can tell me how to setup somwhat a "Wildcard / Catchall DNS", and also "Catchall VirtualHost", so each Domain is automatically pointed to the right folder? Any scripts needed for that?

In PLESK 11 I could set maxclients, ServerLimit ..... in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
But I cannot find these settings in apache2.conf.
Where to configure these settings, in which file?
