A Perfect LAMP Environment

Feb 15, 2008

I'm in the process of trying to document a process for setting up any new LAMP servers in our hosting environment and I was wondering if anyone had any input on software and best practices that they use in their environment and why. I.E.

PHP setup
Apache setup
Preferred Linux Distro
FTP program used
User creation guidelines
Default php.ini settings
Default site settings
etc.

The Perfect Server: Is All This Necessary

Jul 31, 2009

I am sure most have seen the perfect server series on howtoforge. It clearly states the aim is to build an ISP like web server. I am trying to build a server to host about 20 domains that the company i work for own. We are currently hosting these elsewhere.

Do i need to install quota, bind, postfix, saslauthd, Dovecot and Ispconfig? This is what we want to do: host our domains with the option to create email address for each domain if we want to.

Also we will need 2 of the domains to have SSL cert applied. For that we will be using virtual ips as each ssl cert needs to be applied to one ip address. We have 2 network cards in the server but i have tries ubuntu 8.04 and now centos 5.3 and each time i am not able to connect to the server remotely. Now that i have unplugged one of the cables, i am able to connect to the server remotely.

As mentioned above i have installed Centos 5.3 i386.

Trying To Find The Perfect Host

Jun 27, 2007

I had asked for some help awhile ago and recieved some great advice. Unfortunately, the company I work for decided not to move at that time (between deciding to give the host more chance and also becuase we were all dreading another swich over. However, we are now ready to move.

We are currently on shared hosting and I belive VPS is the best option for us right niw (in this stage of our growth).

What I need is one that is fully managed and then some. I need someone that will provide the same type of support you get with shared hosting - meaning I can even come to them when suddenly we have an e-mail issue for example. And for things tht they don't do, at least have the patience to point me in the right direction, help me know what I need to do. I can handle the admin functions of a shared hosting site... but am leery of doing to much more without guidence...

Another thing I am looking for is someone that we can grow with seemlessly - even if it ends up resulting in going to a fully manged deciated server. With any growth, I do want want downtime or having to change DNS (that always causes us problems). I want someone we ca be with for years, allows us to grow, and is reliable/dependable. I really hate switching hosts!

What we need/our set-up/about us:

I would need at least 10 GB hard drive (SCSI HDDS) to begin with.

We currently have two seperate SMF forums (both private, internal with few users) operating on their own MySQL installations. We will probably add more forums (SMF) in the future - each with their own MySQL databases.

We have a Wordpress blog

We use Coppermine Album (it is also tied into the blog so that thumbnails of photos load into the blog sidebar)

For Transfer/bandwidth - I am not sure. I will guess at least 50G. We currently canlt send a lot of our e-mail out of our server due to e-mail limitations so I don't know exactly how much we will use.

On transfer - the majority of it is e-mail, followed by ftp usage.

I really do need someone who can handle and understand our high volumne of e-mail and will help make sure we have no issues with it. That is actually the lifeblood of our business. We recieve data from our clients each day via e-mail, and then send them back customized reports (each day) based on their data. This means we get a lot of e-mail in, and even more going out. When our e-mail shuts down - we shut down.

Our current hosting uses Cpanel and I do like it (and am used to it), however would consider a different control panel if it has the same basic features of Cpanel and is easy to use. However, I really like the fact that moving a Cpanel sitre to another one is very easy (unless that doesn't work when going from shared to VPS)

We will not be doing any reselling of hosting or anything like that - so i don't need anything geared that way. We actually will probably only have the one site, with a few other domains pointed to that. However, we may eventual create additional sites (with their own name) just for the forums.

I have seen about 10 companies listed in other threads that look really good, but not sure which I want... becuase I am hoping I can stay with who ever I pick for the next 10 years and more...

Some of the ones I am interested in are:

Servint
zone.net
powervps

Building Your Perfect Rack...

May 12, 2007

Lets say you're building your 'perfect' rack or cabinet, you've got a single network and power drop from your provider, 20 x mixed 1 and 2u boxes (two interfaces per box), 1u switch and require remote reboot across them all. No other servers to go in the rack at a later date.

What are you gonna buy if budget wasn't an issue? rack/cab/pdu/cbl management/etc/etc.

Basically it's your geek pr0n rack/cab. I'll post mine once I've had a further think.

Perfect Solution For A Shoutcast Provider

Jul 2, 2008

If you want to sell shoutcast accounts what would you go for?

For example,

You want to create a lot of accounts on one server.

100 listener accounts at 128kbps
50 listener accounts at 128kbps
Hosted shoutcast accounts either with whmsonic or cast control
The hosted accounts would have 1gig of webspace
Not sure how much bandwidth each account would need?

Obviously a good connection and server specs

Everyone has different advice it's confusing for a newbie

I can't decide on a server and i want to get setup soon.

Plus i am kind of on a budget.

LAMP Distros

Jan 25, 2009

I'm making the switch from windows to linux for our company web server. We've been running IIS/MySQL/PHP for years and with the OS cost to upgrade the server switching to Linux seems an obvious choice. What frustrates me is that none of the Distros seem very quick to use the latest versions of the AMP components and compiliing from source seems an unnessary hassle. I've tried Ubuntu server so far which has Apache 2.2.9/Mysql 5.0.67/PHP 5.2.6 with no room to easily upgrade any of the components (our WIMP server uses the latest MySQL/PHP).

Is 512 Enough RAM For A Small LAMP Setup

May 9, 2009

I'm setting up a VPS server on Slicehost, I've followed the guide on howtoforge for debian and have everything installed including ISPConfig3. Everything seems to work fine at the mo but when I check the memory usage, i see that I'm using around 490/500mb of my 512mb setup. Its a Xen setup so I understand this is real memory available but I'm not sure if this is enough.

I will ultimately be running around a dozen sites, some static and some dynamic. There's one Mambo and one Joomla site there but they don't update. The rest are all php/mysql sites that I've built myself but again, they don't change that much. None of the sites currently see more than a couple hundred uniques a day, and some only a handful, so usage is not high. Most of the domains have e-mail accounts attached, but its only moderate usage with around a dozen addys per domain max.

So, do I need more memory or will 512 be enough? Is there anything I can do to reduce the load and give myself some more room?

I'm moving from a shared hosting environment and while I'm comfortable setting up the server, I would rather have a simple mail manager that would give users more control over their accounts, change passwords etc, which I'm hoping ISPConfig3 will be able to help with, but thats probably best discussed in another post.

Do you realise that the x64 Opteron is needing an avarage 1.7 %MEM for each Apache process while the Xeon just needs 0.5 %MEM?

Since both use the same version of phpBB and the same version of CentOS5, while the only difference is one is x64 and the other i686, I wonder if this has to do with the way memory is handled by the x64 CentOS5.

LAMP Server From Scratch

Mar 21, 2008

We have a spare powerconnect server in work and i was looking to set it up as a web server for a company intranet - more to gain experience in configuring a web server than anything else.

I decided to go with Fedora 8 as i'd used fedora previously and followed the LAMP tutorial on HowToForge.

However i've come across a problem which i just can't seem to resolve (after pretty intensive searching). So, i guess this post is in 2 parts.

Firstly, the error i'm getting is with mysql only. The error message is:

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

I understand this may be a generic error but i'm not sure what other information would be useful.

Secondly, as this is my first web server - have I made the correct choice in terms of linix release or would something like CentOS be more suitable? I'd like to get this right from the start now that i have the chance.

Small LAMP VPS For Primary DNS Server

May 21, 2009

Because of the security issues inherent in controlling DNS servers on other VPS/servers that run other processes, host websites and store mission-critical data and for other reasons related to control, we want to keep our DNS server separate from our other servers and our own desktops. Therefore, we're going to get a small VPS for this purpose.

We won't totally cheap out on this so we'll be getting a quality VPS from a good provider. But, we probably don't need more than 5 or 10G of HD space but we wonder how much RAM and bandwidth we need to run something like MyDNS with MyDNSConfig with a MySQL backend.

Also, what's the best Linux distro for this kind of thing? We use CentOS with facility but are not afraid to try a new one if it's a better choice for this purpose.

It should be not crazy expensive, with upgrade options (if project traffic grow), with good support, fast and on non-overcrowded server.

Ideally it also should pay me (as developer) commission for hosting the client's project.

And yes, it should be Australian both in term of company registration and physical location of servers.

Apache :: Setting Up Second Server With LAMP

Feb 21, 2015

I am just trying to understand what I am doing wrong when I try to set up a second server with LAMP. I already have a working server with LAMP but i didn't set that one up. Now I am trying to add additional machine and I am trying to figure out what else do i have to do so the machine will work as virtual server for my webpage(s).

Like I said, on a new server i already installed Lamp, forwarded ports 80, 22, 442 ....to correct LAN IP, and added an entry under apache2 sites-available like this:

"<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName test.com
ServerAlias www.test.com
ServerAdmin info@test.com
DocumentRoot /media/BigBoy/www/test
ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/test_error.log
CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/test_access.log combined
</VirtualHost>"

Than i connected a new domain to my main IP but it automaticly connects to the old server that is already running in my home network. So the question is what do i have to do, for my new server to run the webpages i want to? Do i have to add a specific command on old server or something else i forgot?

Apache :: Infinite Loop In LAMP Website

Jul 18, 2013

We are getting infinite loops due to the user requesting the same page continuously , even if apache sends a 200. It is happening randomly once every two or three weeks for different users. This issue is not confined to one browser it is happening with firefox 21, firefox 5, ie 8, etc. It is not happening to the same user again.

It is a PHP based website with custom CMS.We are never able to replicate this issue. Is this something related to a plugin installed on a browser ?

PHP Version 5.3.8
Mysql
Apache 2.0
SUSE
